A’ibom: Group says “sacked” PDP chairman’s meeting illegal

    By Ogenyi Ogenyi,Uyo.

A group, the PDP Advocates for Peace and Justice has condemned in strong terms a meeting convened by the “sacked” chairman of the party in Akwa Ibom, Mr Aniekan Akpan, describing it as a desperate attempt to regain relevance.

In a statement in Uyo in Sunday, endorsed by it’s chairman, Dr Tom Fredfish, the group wondered why Akpan should suddenly call for a crucial meeting after months of silence following the defection of Governor Umo Eno to the APC.

The statement said that the former chairman has lost any constitutional authority to call for a meeting after his removal by the national leadership of the party

“It is embarrassing that after five months of inaction and silence following Governor Umo Eno’s defection to the APC, Aniekan Akpan has suddenly remembered to “unite the party,” only after he has been officially removed by the PDP National Working Committee.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Aniekan Akpan has been sacked by the National Leadership of the PDP, he no longer holds any constitutional authority to convene meetings or speak for the party, and any so-called vote of confidence obtained under his supervision is null, void, and politically irrelevant.

” His actions amount to superintending over illegality and misleading the public into believing he still occupies an office that he has already lost.” It said.

It maintained that the only legitimately recognized leadership of the PDP in Akwa Ibom remained that of Mr Igwat Umoren, “who is working closely with the National Leadership to rebuild party structures, restore internal democracy, mobilize true stakeholders across all levels for meaningful impact in the 2027 elections.

“This new leadership is the face of renewal, unity, and progress within the party.

“Furthermore, it is an open secret that Aniekan Akpan has been fraternizing with the APC while pretending to remain in the PDP. No one can serve two masters; therefore, he should stop deceiving the public, quit the PDP, and formally register with his new political home – the APC.”

The PDP in Akwa Ibom the statement further said has moved forward with fresh leadership, a clear vision, and renewed strength adding that,”no amount of political theatre by a former chairman seeking relevance will derail the party’s commitment to unity, justice, and victory.”

It would be recalled that the leadership of the party in the state has been in contention after a letter sacking Akpan and endorsed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary was later countered by anorher letter from the National Secretary of the party.

    A JOURNEY OF DISCOVERY

After the high level media brain storming, it was time to see China. Seeing China from within is always an adventure. It was excursion through the nuts of Lincang, the tea culture, flowers and Bai culture of Dali

    NUTS OF LINCANG

Lincang, a city in southwest China’s Yunnan Province, is renowned for its macadamia nuts, also called the “Queen of Dried Fruits” and considered one of the world’s most sought-after nuts.

Our team visited the Lincang forestry academy nut planting base and laboratory of nut testing. We saw first hand the miracle that can be achieved through grit and hardwork, how the economy of a community can be transformed with one agricultural product with all lines of its value chain carefully and maximally harnessed. Its easy to see the rural poverty alleviation and rejuvenation strategy that enabled China to lift 800 million Chinese citizens out of poverty.

Lincang in less than three decades since introduction of macadamia nut has become the world’s largest macadamia production base, accounting for 53.2% of China’s total and 36.8% of global production, with over 2.63 million mu (about 175,000 hectares) of macadamia trees.
In 2024, Lincang produced 308,000 tonnes of fresh macadamia nuts and 120,400 tonnes of dried nuts, generating 10.16 billion yuan in output value, benefiting 744,500 farming households.
The achievement is line with China’s drive at poverty alleviation by ensuring that local communities build their communities around products where they have comparative advantage.

Macadamia nuts originated from Australia and were introduced to China in the 1990s, with trial cultivation beginning in Yongde county, Lincang, in 1991. Lincang’s climate, with average annual temperatures of 19°C and over 2,000 hours of sunshine, provides ideal conditions for macadamia cultivation.
Nuts flowed freely, the cracking and sharing was an exciting exercise everyone participated in.

    DALI
Another notable stop was Dali, the former capital of Yunnan Province. We were treated to a memorable Tea Art Performance at the Dali Intangible Cultural Heritage Museum. It was simply mesmerizing, a display of tradition, culture, and skill, deeply rooted in Dali culture.

Imagine witnessing a masterful display and rutuals where tea is poured with elegance and precision into intricate, porcelain teapots. You drink it and then eat it!
First it comes bitter in a small tea cup, then spicy and flavored in a bigger cup then sweet in a bowl to be scooped and eaten with a spoon.

Each tea ritual is symbolically significant, reflecting Chinese existentialism that embodies harmony with nature, balance, and meditation, reflecting Confucian, Taoist, and Buddhist influences in Chinese culture.

The naturalness, simplicity meant we sat in mindful silence and meditation, late into the evening savoring the experinece.

    THE THREE PAGODAS

At the three Pagodas! We saw the marvel of the Pagodas in Dali, the three majestic, ancient pagodas arranged in a perfect symmetrical triangle, forming a breathtaking landmark that’s visible from miles away! These stunning structures are part of the Chongsheng Temple complex, nestled beautifully at the eastern foot of the magnificent Cangshan Mountains and overlooking the serene Erhai Lake.

According to our escort these pagodas have withstood over 30 earthquakes in the past thousand years, showcasing their incredible architectural durability.

    JIANGZHIJI TIE AND DYEING

Jiangzhiji tie and dyeing was super intriguing! It was fun, we got our hands “inky” as we participated and were taken through the magical creation of intricate designs and proceseses of creating and imprinting dye on clothes.

We folded, twisted, crumpled fabric and then bind it with strings and threads. The bound areas resist the dye, creating cool patterns and designs. It’s like magic, but totally satisfying when finally revealed after a dye dip. As a Nigerian it remided me of “Adire” tie and dye technique in Western Nigeria. The Yoruba people practice Adire, a tie-dye method using cassava or rice paste to resist dye, creating striking geometric patterns.

Another memorable stops was Dali ancient city. The awe inspiring sight of Dali marble renowned for its exquisite veining and patterns.

Dali marble has been exclusive to this region from ages showcasing creamy whites, grays, and warm tones.
The enormous work done over the years at conservation, to preserve the Dali marble from commercial abuse. Dali marble stands as a major cultural heritage of the Dali people that showcases the craftsmanship of the region’s rich artistic traditions.

    XIAOHOUSUO FLOWER BASE

We also visited the Xiaohousuo flower farm. We saw the careful and detailed efforts that went into the cultivation of fresh flowers. The enormous green houses, drip irrigation systems, pest control efforts the dedicated workers quietly pruning and trimming, the sweet fragrance, the bloom of roses. It was refreshing and simply delightful to behold.

Yunnan produces over 70% of China’s fresh-cut flowers, with a significant portion destined for export.

Our quide informed us that most of the flowers produced in Yunnan are exported to countries like Thailand, Japan, Singapore, Russia, and Australia, significantly boosting its local economies and generating economic opportunities.

Yunnan’s fresh-cut flower exports reached $50.04 million, in the first quarter of 2025. With over 100 varieties being exported.

    DALI ECOLOGICAL CORRIDOR
A major conservation effort to protect the Erhai lake, stretching for 129-kilometer. It serves as a vital water-land buffer zone and ecological barrier, aiming to protect the lake’s ecosystem and promote sustainable development. It features major works in wetland restoration, ecosystem preservation, and pollution control.

The walk through the lakes embankment was refreshing. Its a major tourist attraction with reverers, shoppers. In all my visits to China i have never seen so many newly weds in one location. They were everywhere at the bank of the lake. Making most of the exotic and abundant flowery gardens to snap memorable pictures. Leisure spaces, coffee shops were in abundance.

    THE BAI PEOPLE

Dali, China, is a treasure trove of history, culture, and breathtaking natural beauty.

We enjoyed the warmth and hospitality of the Bai people of Yunnan.

The Bai ethnic minority known for their rich heritage and unique customs and costumes noted for its colorful embroidery, featuring intricate embroidery and craftsmanship.

Particularly the women wear distinctive headwear adorned with silver jewelries and vivid decorations reflecting their cultural tastes, history, aesthetics, and cultural distinctiveness within China’s diverse ethnic mosaic.

In Yunnan, we walked through ancient cobblestone streets, surrounded by traditional Bai architecture, we felt the cultural heritage of the Bai people, the unforgettable, warmth and vivid laughter of the people. We Savored local delicacies like Erhai fish, “crossing-the-bridge noodles”, spicy black chicken and many more traditional Yunnan flavors. It was delightful, awe inspiring. We made memories to linger for a lifetime !

The Great Wall is a powerful emblem, but China’s essence lies in its vast tapestry of history, culture, people, landscapes, and the innovative spirit of its people. Ten days of exploring Yunnan, “the city of eternal spring” was a revelation that further reflects the spirit of China, a vast country steeped in five thousand years of history, of resilience, and unmatched beauty and heritage.

ASUU declares two weeks nationwide strike

    * Says FG has failed to address long-standing issues affecting public universities

    * Insists key agreements particular the renegotiated 2009 ASUU-FGN has not been implemented

    By Achadu Gabriel, Kaduna

Nigeria’s Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared a two-week nationwide warning strike beginning from Monday, October 13, 2025, after prolonged bark and fought with government.

The warning strike is to drive home what the Union described as the federal government’s failure to address long-standing issues affecting Nigeria’s public universities.

The decision followed an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Abuja, where university lecturers across the country unanimously resolved to withdraw their services for two weeks as a signal to the government to meet their demands.

According to reports, the union accused the federal government of reneging on key agreements reached over the years, particularly the full implementation of the renegotiated 2009 ASUU-FGN agreement, payment of outstanding earned academic allowances, and adequate funding for university revitalization.

Speaking after the meeting, ASUU President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, lamented that despite several meetings and promises, the government has continued to show insincerity and neglect toward the education sector.

“We have exercised patience enough. The union has been engaging constructively, but the government keeps paying lip service to our demands. This warning strike is to remind them that Nigerian universities cannot continue to operate under deplorable conditions,” he stated.

The two-week industrial action, according to ASUU, will serve as a prelude to a full-scale strike if the federal government failed to respond within the period.

Students across campuses have reacted with mixed feelings. While some expressed disappointment over the imminent disruption of academic activities, others said the strike was necessary to draw attention to the declining state of public universities.

Meanwhile, the federal government has appealed to the union to reconsider its decision, pledging renewed commitment to resolving all outstanding issues through dialogue.

Stakeholders expressed fears that another prolonged shutdown could further destabilize Nigeria’s already fragile academic calendar, yet to recover from previous strike actions.

As the clock ticks toward Monday, tension continues to mount across university campuses nationwide, with both lecturers and students waiting to see if the government will act swiftly to avert another full-blown crises in the education sector circle.

Former Senate Minority Leader backs Caleb Mutfwang’s re-election as Governor

    By Israel Adamu, Jos

Former Senate Minority Leader Senator Simon Mwadkwon at the weekend deemed Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s re-election in 2027 as “unstoppable” citing his achievements and the Plateau State populace acceptance of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Speaking with newsmen in Jos, Plateau State, Senator Mwadkwon said the governor’s performance over the last two years has further entrenched and demonstrated his leadership qualities, and that his continuance in 2027 is unquestionably necessary to properly reposition the state.

“By all accounts, the PDP and the people of Plateau State are comfortable with his leadership style and the accomplishments he has made in just two years.

In his words “In addition, there are a number of ongoing projects that will improve the government’s reputation once they are finished” he declared.

Senator Mwadkwon expressed optimism that the People’s Democratic Party will win elections at all levels in Plateau State come 2027, saying the party’s relationship with the people of the state has been symbiotic since the inception of this democratic dispensation.

He also debunked the growing insinuation by some mischief makers that Governor Muftwang was among the governors scheming to dump the PDP for APC, adding that the governor has repeatedly dismissed the insinuation.

“It remains a baseless insinuation; the governor has repeatedly denied this. Anyway, it is not an issue to be discussed because there’s no substance in it. Our governor remains in PDP and has not discussed leaving the party with anyone to the best of my knowledge,” he declared.

On the insecurity in Nigeria, particularly in the northern part of the country, Senator Mwadkwon maintained that state police will go a long way towards the myriad of security challenges, adding that those opposed to it have no compelling reason to support their position given the number of people killed, kidnapped, and properties destroyed.

He declared, “I am a strong supporter of the State Police. Nigeria will not be the first nation to implement this; at one point in time, when we had what was known as local government native authority police in Northern Nigeria, crime was at its lowest.

“The idea was that the police should be close to the people, but my position is that those against it may have hands in the killings. If those opposing it had been victims, either directly or indirectly, they would not oppose it. Human lives are sacrosanct and should be protected.”

He implored the National Assembly and the government to go to the grassroots and sample the opinion of the people on whether they want state police or not instead of relying on the elites alone to discuss the issue.

Community Policing Approach, Best option for crime control – Kogi CP

The Commissioner of Police, Kogi State Command, CP Miller Gajere Dantawaye has advocated adoption of Community Policing approach as the best option to achieve crime control and to achieve Police mission in the society.

He asserted that Community Policing approach was most viable as it involves working directly with community members and relevant stakeholders with enhanced intelligence gathering for effective crime prevention, detection and control.

The Commissioner however, urged citizens to always report Police personnel misconduct through appropriate channels rather than resort to social media in case of possible misdemeanor of operatives.

He asserted that Community Policing approach was most viable as it involves working directly with community members and relevant stakeholders with enhanced intelligence gathering for effective crime prevention, detection and control.

Kaduna community protest alleged electrocution of multiple persons

    By Achadu Gabriel, Kaduna

Karatudu Extension Community Development Association (KECDA) has widely protested against Kaduna Electric Distribution Company (KAEDCO), over alleged electrocution of members in Gonin Gora area of kaduna South.

The protest held at KAEDCO office blamed the company of multiple deaths caused by electrocution as a result of poorly maintained transformers and 13-day prolonged power blackout in karatudu extension area of Gonin Gora, located along Abuja -kaduna highway.

The community revealed that 22 transformers in their area are not properly earthed, describing it as a fatal flaw, as well as a “death trap”, adding that it has already claimed several lives, amongst other most critical issue raised as the immediate danger to lives.

The protesters therefore demanded that all unsafe transformers be shut down immediately to prevent further tragedies of electrocution, which allegedly occurred through touching of wall on the houses.

Compounding the safety crises is the alleged complete collapse of public electricity supply, according to the community leaser. “The community has been in darkness for 13 days”, which the community attributed to a surge in theft and insecurity.

They reported that the blackout has emboldened thieves, including some elements claiming to be KAEDCO staff, stealing electrical equipment from the de-energized transformers and poles, with many street poles down and live wires lying on the ground.

The protesters expressed deep frustration with KAEDCO’s excuses for the poor service.

One protester (mame withheld), claiming to have insider knowledge from the Transmission Company of Nigeria, authoritatively revealed that power has been distributed to the region, directly contradicting KAEDCO’s explanation about collapsed towers.

He accused the company of “negligence” and “wickedness” for failing to use its system to detect fault, and relied on communities to report faults instead of deploying its field staff.
In a tense exchange, the protesters demanded specific answers and time frames.

They also insisted on knowing why the victims families of at least three electrocuted have not been compensated, criticizing KAEDCO management for failing to send representatives to a wake keep of the deceased, despite promises to do so.

The placards inscriptions reads: “KAEDCO Stop Killing Us, Enough is Enough, NEPA Do Something Now.. Our Community Chairman is a sellout, Deal with the community directly”.

The Service Manager, Haruna Magaji, acknowledged the grievances but stated his limited authority. “This is the first time I’m hearing about no earths from the community. I will table your grievances to the management”.

He added that he could not finalize any decisions, stressing that “While he assured that power had been restored the previous night, his responses did little to the placated crowd.

The protesters also passed -a- vote- of -no- confidence on Karatudu Extension Community Development Association Chairman, Elder Simeon Oloyede who has been the chairman of the community for 17 years.

According to the KECDA, Elders that were part of the protest, Elder Oloyede has been occupying the leadership of KECDA since 2011.

“The community constitution stipulated two years for a single tenure, but the chairman was reelected on 4th May 2013 for a second term, and his tenure was supposed to end in 2015.

“For now, the chairman is no longer recognized as our leader. He is viewed as a sellout and not representing the community’s interests. Anyone dealing with him as our representative does so at their own risk.” they declared.

The protest ended with a stark ultimatum, as the community vowed to stage more severe protests and threatened to “Set this office on fire”, if their demands for safe infrastructure, stable power supply, and compensation for the victims’ families, are not met promptly and decisively.
