  • Tinubu mulls female INEC Chairman to replace Mahmood

Tinubu mulls female INEC Chairman to replace Mahmood

    By Achadu Gabriel, Kaduna

Against the backdrop of the recent story making round on the likely successor of the immediate past chairman of INEC, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, an insider source has given a contrary views to the insinuation made recently by Engr. Buba Galadima.

According to the source who is familiar with the workings of INEC, the jostling for the emergence of the chairman of the electoral umpire is being promoted by three different powerful groups including a powerful serving Minister on a solo engagement.

Recalled that INEC Chairman, Prof. Yakubu’s tenure came to an end after the completion of his two consecutive terms in office.

“A powerful serving Minister is pushing for a candidate from the South. A former Governor with strong political connection to the President from an oil rich South- South is in the first group pushing for a candidate from his state. He recently influenced the cross over of his former state Governor to the APC”, the source revealed.

Closely followed is another group promoting the interest of some powerful people from Lagos axis supported by some elements in the security sector working for the emergence of a female candidate from Delta state.

Their selling point is on the need to have a strong female chairperson with capacity to “reform the system and restore electoral fidelity to the institution”.

This group have sold the idea to the administration on the need to have a female chairperson in charge of INEC for the first time in order to curry the Nigerian female constituency to boost support and confidence to PBAT administration.

In the build up to the nomination of the new Chairman, the name of an influential former INEC Director from Delta State came up. The source disclosed that expectation is high on materialization of emergence of the strong willed lady as the next chairperson of the electoral management board.

“Her credentials are irresistible and record of her past dealings with all political parties is going to vindicate her. The involvement of her influential former Deputy President of the Senate from Delta in the major push couldn’t be ascertained”, he said.

The last group is the one spearheaded by hawkish politicians within the ruling party hell bent on installing an INEC Chairman who can deliver the forthcoming 2027 general election at all cost.

According to the source, the job is a very difficult one and therefore cannot be given to an entirely new person that my need at least two years to learn the job. Such person may likely be undermined by vested interests and other powerful individuals within the commission in charge of the department of operations, ICT and logistics before, during and after the 2027 general election.

“The issue of Justice Liman and other names being speculated about this is completely false and not on the card.”

Considering the history of the umpire and list of the past chairmen of the Commission. South East and North have held the position at several times. Therefore, the issue of some one or a serving National Commissioner from the south west is technically out of considering. Also principles of fairness dictates that the President cannot not nominate his fellow south westerner to supervise an election from his zone in which he is a contestant.

The only zone to produce INEC Chairman in the present circumstances is south south region. All former Head of States/Presidents nominated chairmen of the electoral body outside their zone. From reliable sources, the President Tinubu is following similar route based on the same principles.

Some have argued that the south south have produced many chairmen of the electoral body in the past. But to most people, the issue goes beyond this narrative. According to them, one time Chairman of INEC from the region voluntarily resigned based on principles and refusal to be teleguided. Also likely hood of not having a south south as a candidate of any of the major political parties on the ballot during the forthcoming polls is another important factor. It seems President Tinubu is not bothered by certain divergent positions and all the noise by other politically motivated ideas and speculations to fizzle out soon.

The international community are going to welcome the idea for the appointment of a female chairperson of the electoral body to the eternal credit of Tinubu’s sense of gender inclusion credentials.

  • Through the Ancient Silk Road to Modern Economic Prosperity: how China is Shaping its Economic Future

Through the Ancient Silk Road to Modern Economic Prosperity: how China is Shaping its Economic Future

    By Othuke Evroh.

Imagine sauntering through the ancient City Gates of Xi’an, the indomitable imperial capital of Chang’an under the Han and Tang Dynasty, the conception and genesis of the legendary Silk Road, where traders, travellers, and explorers from ancient times once converged to share technologies, cultures, stories, innovations and trade. And standing before me in artistic arch-angles like an immortal colossus was the historic but all famous Mogao Caves of Dunhuang .

As I traversed these immortal historical wonders, I could not help but feel and experience the weight of history and culture that percolates and infiltrates every brick and statue of this ancient city of Dunhuang. Being one of the 25 Visiting Sinologists hosted by China’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism, I had the very rare privilege of visiting the Gansu Provincial Museum and the Gansu Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, the Yellow River, the Gansu Jiandu Museum, Wuwei Museum, the Great Buddha Temple and the Mati Grottos in Zhangye City, the Yulin Grottoes and Xuanquan Posthouse, the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang City and in addition, attend the Silk Road (Dunhuang) 2025 International Cultural Expo, visit the Singing Sand Dunes and Crescent Moon Spring and attend the Starry Night Concert, while traversing the Yangguan Han-era Great Wall Ruins, among others.

Dunhuang City, the springboard of China’s Silk Road is nothing short of a testament to the country’s rich heritage and global influence that is consciously being revived through a systematic but yet strategic blend of culture and tourism. Dunhuang has remained the harbour, the haven of the ancient Silk Road, serving not only as a pivotal crossroads where trade routes melt, but also a significant hub for cultural and religious exchanges, such as Buddhism between China and the West.

The Silk Road which was an ancient network of exchange—of silk, stories, ideas, spices, goods and spirit and once a historic artery connecting East to West, is undoubtable, in my perspectives, the foundation of China’s economic modernization and the sub-structure for China’s emergence as a global economic powerhouse. This ancient Silk Road has metamorphosed through time and space from the ”One Belt One Road” to today’s ”Belt and Road Initiative”(BRI), which has remained the diplomatic torch and all-purpose philosophy that currently underpins China’s cultural, socio-economic exchange and diplomatic engagements with the entire globe. The BRI as such, is not merely an infrastructure development project; it is a means to promote civilization exchanges and people-to-people diplomacy.

Further, it is instructive to state that China’s economic ascendance is not solely a product of modernization, industrialization and BRI; rather, it is a product of its patriotic citizenry and its rich cultural heritage. It is an embodiment of the people and what they believe. The ordinary Chinese man in the streets of China believes in his government’s huge investments in culture and the nexus between a people’s culture and economic prosperity. They display this belief among others by flocking different museums and ancient relic sites in numbers regardless of time and cost just as numerous Chinese teenagers sacrifice their valuable leisure time to act as volunteers at different provincial museums to drive home this unperturbed faith.

Further, for instance, during our 21 day Visiting Sinologists Programme, our tour guides which included; Wang Jiaqi, Xu Rui, Cai Jinyuan, Mai Mengxiao, She Yue, Wei Yiyu, Ma Le, Dang Yixuan and Wag Yuanhui who are also staff of Gansu Jiandu Museum, were an amiable embodiment of professionalism who displayed uncanny attitude of dedication as if their lives depended on ensuring that we understood the missive and reasons behind the several tours. They believed in what their government is doing and in addition, have faith that the Silk Road, People and Culture are the major tripods of today’s Sino-China economic prosperity.

In conclusion, it is pertinent to state that the Silk Road and by implication the BRI has become an instrument in shaping China’s economic prosperity in today’s modern China. And as the People’s Republic of China continues to navigate the complexities of global politics and economics, the BRI, its people and rich cultural heritage/historical legacy will undoubtedly play a crucial role in shaping its economic trajectory.

    And as President Xi Jinping once told lawmakers from Xinjiang during the annual session of the National People’s Congress;

”we should love ethnic unity as loving our eyes, cherish ethnic unity like cherishing our lives”. By embracing its Silk Road Cultural heritage, China is not only reconnecting with its past but also forging a new path to economic greatness. The nexus between Culture and Economic Prosperity can therefore not be overemphasised.

  • A’ibom shrine crisis; NGO seeks truce, appeals for discretion

A’ibom shrine crisis; NGO seeks truce, appeals for discretion

    By Ogenyi Ogenyi,Uyo

A Non Governmental Organisation, Open Forum for Humanity Organisation has called for truce and maturity in the handling of the use of traditional injunction by a
female traditional worshipper in her shrine to draw the attention of Governor Umo Eno to the handling of a land dispute in Akwa Ibom.

It has also called on the traditional institution to reject being used by political actors in the state to further their personal and selfish interests.

In a statement in Uyo endorsed by it’s Founder, Citizen Mathew Koffi Okono,a Productivity Advocate and Reformer, the organisation expressed dissatisfaction over the poor handling of the incident which went viral on social media.

It expressed saddeness that the attention given to Princess Godown Udoito’s private worship in her shrine attracted swift action rather than the reason for her act and appealed for amicable and discreet resolution of the matter because of some sensitive issues surrounding it.

“Open Forum is deeply concerned that the revered Akwa Ibom State Traditional Rulers in the State has been dragged into the case, not in the course of resolving the land matter, but in reaction to a traditional worshipper, Princess God’own Udoito’s private session at her shrine.

“This daughter of Esit Eket whose method of advocacy for the resolution of the land case went from her known Facebook podcast to using traditional items such as Ayei (Fresh palm frond) and Ufofob (local gin) to offer traditional prayers on the Stubb Creek matter at her shrine.

In a video which trended on social media, three Paramount Rulers, as emissaries of the Akwa Ibom State Traditional Rulers Council had gone to the palace of the Paramount Ruler of Esit Eket to deliver a message from the Akwa Ibom State Traditional Rulers Council, directing the Esit Eket Monarch and a clan head to bring Princess Udoito to a meeting at the State Traditional Rulers Council Chambers, .

“The traditional summons which involved the presentation of “ayei” raised mixed feelings with unfavorable comments across the State and beyond. The proposed meeting could not however hold as scheduled.

“In our pursuit of an amicable resolution of the incident, Open Forum had conversations with some royal fathers of interest over the matter, appealing for discreet resolution because of certain sensitive issues surrounding it.

It said the exposure of some protocols of the traditional rulers to social media was unacceptable and a disrespect to the sacred Identity of the traditional institution.

“This was made worse by the individual that secretly recorded and circulated on social media the amateur video of the supposed rare and sacred event of royal fathers on a special traditional visit to their colleague.

“This is an embarrassment to the traditional institution and the people of the State. The perpetrator should be warned against such breach of protocol and secrecy in future.

“The revered traditional institution must be insulated from poor sense of judgement, petty influences and crude interests of politically exposed persons who are ever ready to sacrifice anything in an attempt to manage their challenged reputations and retain their source(s) of lifelihood. ” The statement said.

He called for the setting up of a Palace Advisory Council for each of the Paramount Rulers in the state inorder to avoid decisions on critical issues only in the hands of the royal father’s alone to take.

“To ensure our royal fathers have access to bright minds to analyse and advise them on critical issues such as this before they take a decision for, or against we advocate the mandatory establishment of Palace Advisory Councils for all Paramount Rulers in the state. Clan Heads should have it too.

” Decisions on critical issues should not be left to the royal fathers alone to take with thorough review and expert recommendations. No royal father should be taken unaware of issues, particularly issues of consequence.

“We most respectfully appeal to our royal fathers to manage the outcome of the September 20, 2023 summons to avoid drawing the traditional institution to needless controversies beyond what is in public domain so far.

“We also appeal to those using the oppurtunity to taunt royal fathers to please cease further acts. As much as no one should be silenced while fighting for justice, a blanket demeaning of the traditional institution is a no, no. Where clear and outstanding issues of intentional oppressions and integrity are established, such can be treated as a stand- alone or isolated case. ” It said.

It expressed worry over the silence of political leaders, stakeholders, heads of socio-cultural organizations, opinion and religious leaders in the state over critical issues adding that everything should not be left to the Governor to attend to before they are resolved in the State.

“It is no longer a secret that some of those who should be solving crises are themselves perpetrators of crisis. Those who are always visible at ceremonies within and outside the State should not become invisible when responsibilities of leadership beckons. All hands must be on deck to make Akwa Ibom State a land where injustice and oppression are taboos.” The statement concluded.
