How l became a consultant inside Kaduna Prison – Journalist Idibia

    MY STORY

    By Idibia Gabriel

It is Interesting but hazardous to tell the story of oneself as part of the second year anniversary of my incarceration as journalist in Nigeria Correctional Services (NcS), Kaduna Centre, formally known as Kaduna Convict Prison.

It all started with an objective investigative news report anchored by my humbleself and published in a widely circulated Daybreak Newspapers online edition of September 24th 2023, to be precise.

The contentious story was titled: “Kaduna Hajj camp, a national shame, men, women sleep together in overcrowded hall– investigation”.

Indeed, the focus of the story was on the deplorable condition of Kaduna Mando Hajj camp, and the poor organization of the 2023, Hajj exercise, also overtly condemned by the Amiru Hajj, Emir of Zazzau His Royal Highness, Nuhu Bamali.

Even though relevant authority at the Mando Hajj camp, especially the Executive Secretary, Yusuf Yakubu A, was directly contacted and his inputs well represented and incorporated into the investigative news report, the story still landed me in prison remand, through “arrangee”.

My prosecution travail began with a phone call from the “Operation Yaki” a Nigeria Police formation formed to curb crimes in Kaduna state. It was so uncalled for and odd that a refined ex- Nigeria Police Boss, late IGP Solomon Arase got involved and demanded me to brief him of the matter from Genesis to revelation, as the then Police Service Commission chairman.

On 25th September 2023, or thereabout, a call came through unknown caller later identified as officer Haruna, an Investigating Police Officer, under Kaduna State Police command. The call came in the morning hours of Friday, asking me to report to the station concerning a petition against my news reports.

Incidentally, it became obvious to me that the phone number used to verify the information from Hajj camp authority must have been supplied to the overzealous police officers to fetched me ignorantly against the working of journalists.

Automatically, I knew I was going to be hunted to face injustice instead of justice. As an experienced Journalist, I had no reason not to submit myself before law enforcement agents invitation. Before then, I had had several other invitations including to IGP office at Abuja Force headquarters, and was even detained and tortured at CID police division in Kaduna state where I practiced.

Incidentslly, I had a Goodwill kind of message or paper to present at the popular House of Justice, Barnawa office in Kaduna on the day I was invited by police, at an annual event organized by an erudite fearless female Human Right lawyer, Barrister Gloria Ballason.

When I informed the IPO of the House of Justice event, he was magnanimous and quickly obliged me to appear after the occasion, which was okay by me – it was also an opportunity for me to promptly inform the female lawyer, Barr. Ballason, about my invitation by the Police over my news report, after my goodwill message.

Immediately I informed Barr. Ballason at the end of my presentation, it became a case of interest for the female Right Activist lawyer, who promised to follow up with me immediately her event is over. So I finished and left her place straight for police station located along constitution road to answer police invitation.

Long before I got there, I put up calls and informed officials of the State Council of Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), including the Correspondent chapel officials but none of them deemed it fit to do the needful. And none of them came or asked me to wait until they called and hear the reasons from the relevant police authority before going, or going with me, which has been the normal procedure and practice, for an experienced NUJ leadership.

So I went all alone and reported myself. On getting there I was shown photocopy of my newsreport on 2023 Mando Hajj exercise, as the bases for my invitation. I insisted on waiting for my lawyer before putting down any statement regarding the matter. However, owing to the visibly restless police officers, perhaps because of their own vested and selfish interest, I had to commit myself into writing a statement.

Indeed, I reluctantly wrote a statement after calls and waited sometimes without anybody arriving from Barr. Gloria Ballason to advised accordingly. After some kinds of back and forth, for and against, it was concluded that i should be detain in their facilities.

Hours later, a brother journalist working with NNN came to the police station to take my bail but was reluctantly rejected after several efforts and left. But before he left he was able to inform the spokesman of Kaduna state police command Asp, Mansir Hassan who also came but was unable to secure my bail and left pretentiously.

However, later in the same night I was called out for release due to pressure from above, especially NUJ national, but I reluctantly declined for fear of security of my life. The police insisted on my released, after granting my bail through my NNN journalist brother who was later called back to sign my bail.

The IPO drove and dropped me somewhere close to my house in his car after my released from cell in dead of the night.

The story of how my money was manipulated, is also entirely a different one. When I was released I however asked to be reporting back, which I complied with for sometime but was again asked to wait untill I’m called.

I went to police station twice within the period. The third time visit with a lawyer was met with accusation of jumping bail, and touching face of my phone while standing with them under mango tree outside the station, and was therefore taken for detention again, but was later given a date to go and come for arraignment in court.

Though it was arranged, I was arraigned before the Chief Magistrate court 2, Daura road, with N2 million fine and 2 sureties very close to closing hour. All efforts to meet up with the N2 millon bail conditions was impossible and later remanded in prison custody.

Entering entrance prison premises was not without issues and news as the Fulani prison staff screening officer accused me of the reason for writing about corruption in Hajj camp. “Are you the only journalist who sees corruption in the Hajj camp”, the asked me with furious facial appearance.

Attempt to reply him in same coins was however cut short, when another prison Officer who brought us before the screening officer tapped me below the belt warning that any attempt to be rude to him would result to dumping me in the convict inmate cell. So I withdrew my answers with boiling heart, and screen went on with insults before I was taken into the prison premises.

On a long quene into the inmate convict cell, I was called back to come and show them the way to the class cell where you’ve some items for respected cell inmates, even though they were flat.

On entering into my cell after necessary registrations, someone immediately recognize my face and told them my profession that “this man is a Journalist”. Instantly many of cell inmates started itchinf to talk with me, a development that caught the attention of the cell IGP police who incidentally was in our cell.

The inmate who recognized me and others were reprimanded and sanctioned, why other inmates wanting to discuss with me without waiting for the normal indoctrination is performed, were warned seriously.

They pleaded and apportioned blames to one another but were later granted pardon by IGP and Commissioner of Police in the cell. But immediately after my indoctrination, inmates in my cell started coming to me one after another. The first one introduced him as a staff of either FRCN or NTA Kaduna, l cannot remember very well. He promised to give full briefing of his offense but later withheld on ground that frantic efforts were on top gear to finally released him.

The second person was addressed as Bishop who as but a visionary for telling me openly that imprisonment was not for my offense but as messiah brought there to released him from the prison he had already first 4-5years term, and remaining 5-6 more years terms to spend as allegedly political prisoner.

To cut the long stories short, he offered me his sleeping mattress to share with him pending the time of my own and briefed me all through the night reasons of his imprisonment. He appeared financially rich and influential Inmate. Even inmates from other cell who learnt about me wanted to start visiting our cell late, but were prevented.

Even though every inmates were allowed fresh air outside the cells at certain hours, my case was different – I was not allowed out of my cell. Any attempt made out of the cell were checkmated, fearing I maybe exposed to some rots and dubious practices in the premises. A case 12 years old teenager inmate, was typical example.

Luckily, some inmates, including the richest exchanged and smuggled their phone numbers to me to help them investigate and know the circumstances surrounding their alleged unjust imprisonment with a view to establishing their innocenc, and freedom.

Accordingly, many of them were set free later through my contentious investigative newsreport published on them.

One of them was up for governorship ambition in his state of origin before his travail that led to imprisonment, according to him. Uptil date, he patronized and addressed me as his savour after God. He had taken me to his house, slept in my house too. In fact, we’re like brothers as it stands today. He is not the only one, but several others. In one of the report that set them free crashed me with a commissioner of Justice Kaduna state, even after my prison remand.

The good news is that the Executive Secretary, Yusuf Yakubu, who was so exposed by the publication with video evidence, was fired based on the Hajj exercise scam we reported. It was a wave making story and became talk of town.

With two NUJ national Awards and one international Award, it clearly speaks that “Nothing good go in vain”.

Objectivity, truthfulness, accuracy and balanced investigative newsreport, and consciencious Journalism remains the best way to go. In these way, your adding values, socially, economically and politically to people’s lives, in a country’s tedious situation like Nigeria our nation. Fearless and courageous- nobody can be so careful not die one day. This is my story. Thanks

Kaduna: Psychiatric Hospital allegedly disregard court order to reinstate sacked staff

    By Achadu Gabriel, kaduna

A staff of Federal Neuro-psychiatric Hospital, Barnawa, Kaduna, Mr. Kayode G. Obisanya has raised an alarm over alleged refusal of the hospital to reinstated him back to the institution in compliance with Court Judgement and Orders.

Mr. Abisanya who’s appointment was allegedly illegally terminated in 2015, by a Medical Director of the hospital, challenged the matter at the National industrial Court, Kaduna, through his Legal Counsel, Barrister Ibinola O.O.O Meshacq, of A.T. Usman -Ibonola & Co.

In an interview with Journalists in Kaduna penultimate Tuesday 22nd September 2025, Mr. Abisanya said that his appointment was illegally terminated in 2015, by the then medical Director of the Hospital.

Dissatisfied with the reason for the termination of his appointment, Mr. Kayode dragged the hospital management to the National Industrial Court in Kaduna, and got judgement and Orders to be reinstated and paid all his arrears of salaries and promotion, after six months in Court.

According to Mr. Kayode, rather than complying with the court judgement and Orders, the hospital management advised him to forget payment of all his salary arrears and promotion arrears, and resumed work, saying that the hospital has no money to pay his outstanding benefits.

He further told journalists that the Management threatened him with Appeal Court through their legal officer when he declined the advise to forget payment of salary arrears and promotion arrears, and they later went for an Appeal against the industrial court judgement in his favor.

He said, they persisted and said that also they’ve right of Appeal, scaring him that doing so could take yet another years of adjournment, time consuming and money, telling hm to resume work and forget payment of arrears, but Mr. Abisanya declined and remain Adamant against all odds.

The hospital management, according to Mr. Abisanya later went to Appeal Court when he refused to heed to their advise to forget payment of arrears and promotion, but the Appeal Court upheld his judgement and dismissed their Appeal.

However, in a letter addressed to the hospital Medical Director by Counsels and solicitors to Mr. Abisanya, dated 22nd September 2025, directed that all terms of the judgement be complied within 30 days of delivery.

The letter made available to.our correspondent is entitled: “Re: enforcement of judgement in suit No.NICN/ABJ/229/1015–MR. Kayode G. Abisanya v.Federal Neuro-psychiatric Hospital, Barnawa, Kaduna & Anor”.

It added that” You’ll recall that our client instituted legal action at National Industrial Court of Nigeria, kaduna, challenging the legality of his posting security office at the main entrance of the hospital premises of the 1st Defendant and his subsequent terminated and stoppage of salary from 1st Defendant, amongst others”.

Accordingly, it added that “On 9th November 2021, the Honourable court deliver judgement in favour of our client. The court further directed that all terms of the judgement be complied within 30 days of delivery.

“However, the judgement was appealed to a Court of Appeal Holden at by the Defendant/Applicants in south no. CA/ABJ/PRE/REA/CV/85MI/2022.The appellate consequently gave judgment in favour of our client on the 20 June 2025 which dismissed the appeal.

“However, uptil date out client has not been reinstated nor have the mandatory component of the judgement been settled. We therefore demand the immediate and full compliance with the judgement of the Court, now final and binding. In the light of the above, kindly confirm in writing, our client date of resumption.

“Ensure all outstanding entitlements and damages are processed without further delay. Failure to comply within seven daya of this letter shall have out client no option but to initiate enforcement against all relevant parties. Please treat with the urgency and seriousness it deserves”, it stated.

Contacted for clarification, the management staff of the hospital who spoke through the spokesman, Mr. Haruna Usman said the Phychiatric Hospital has no problem with reinstating Mr. Kayode Abisanya, attributing the delayed to lack of constituted board.

He also said that the total of Court cases faced with the hospital was 17 in number when the new MD assumed office, and were therefore transferred to the federal Ministry of health, Abuja and handled by the legal department of the ministry that now reserved the right to direct the implementation of the court judgement and Orders.

“With regard to Mr. Kayode’s issue, we, as a psychiatric hospital, we don’t have any reason not to reinstate him, but we have to get order, like I said, you should know that we don’t have a board, right now.

“The board has not yet been constituted, and as you are rightly informed by the legal team
of this hospital; the case had been transferred. It was not the only case. We have about 17 cases when the MD came to office.

“We are able to settle about four out of court cases, and the remaining one has been transferred
to the mother Ministry. Know fully well that these cases have been there since 2015, and we have new management now.

“We have about two to three management before the coming of the present one. So, and since that time, they have been transferred to Ministry of Health, the legal officers in that ministry have been the one involved in the case.

“The management has no problem with him being reinstated. The only thing is we are waiting for order from the mother ministry, which is Federal Ministry of Health, the legal team, to say, to give us an order to reinstate him”, he said.

But the illegally sacked staff, Mr Abisanya told journalists few days ago that he was bounced back on two occasions when he took letter of reinforcement to both the hospital and Ministry, even when the hospital alleged that it has furnished the mother Ministry with letter attached with Kayode’s lawyer’s letter.

Continuing,  Olukoyede stressed that,  “you must fit adequately into the mould of officers that are well-rewarded and morally upright. Integrity, for us, is not a slogan, it is a rule of engagement and an article of faith in the work we do.   It is often said that he that comes to equity must come with clean hands.  Nothing can be truer than this.  You cannot offer the nation what you don’t have.  Anti-corruption officers must be above board at all times”

“For the umpteenth time, prepare your minds to be professional and diligent. Sanctions and punitive measures against corrupt practices by officers of the Commission are stiff.  I wouldn’t want such for any of you”.

He further stated that, the sustenance of the Commission’s culture of exemplary law enforcement, anchored on global best practices is at the heart of its huge investment in the training of its cadets.

“The Commission has invested heavily in your training. This is because we believe in turning out officers that are moulded and grounded in sound intellect, physical agility, courageous comportment and accountable conduct.  Our officers are trained to square with and even tower above their global counterparts. This is owing to the scope of our mandate which is broad and global.  So, in your individual capacities, you are equipped as an international law enforcement officer and you must see yourselves as such”

Talking about the issue of corruption, the anti-graft czar stated that to tackle it,  concerted efforts, energy, passion and drive of every patriotic Nigerian are needed.   He scored the EFCC high in its adherence to its mandate because  “the Commission has shown that it is capable of tackling any economic and financial crime and this is not just self-adulation or aggrandisement. It is owing to its development of effective manpower that can weather the storms of investigations and prosecution of cases.  We will continue in this trajectory. Fresh officers coming into the fold of the EFCC should seek to surpass existing records of progress in their various sections and units.  We are eager to break the siege of graft in our land and by our individual and corporate determination, we will surely sail through”.

The Reviewing  Officer of the Parade and governor of Nasarawa State, His Excellency, Engineer Abdullahi Sule, congratulated the cadets for demonstrating resilience and determination. “I congratulate all of you for going through this and demonstrating exactly that you are indeed ready for Nigeria. After witnessing what you have just demonstrated today, we believe that the future of Nigeria is very bright,” he said.

While applauding the EFCC for its successes in the anti-corruption fight, he urged members of the National Assembly to further strengthen the Commission in the pursuit of its mandate with a recommendation of the creation of a special anti-corruption court. “I also want to thank the members of the National Assembly for the support that they have continued to give you, the EFCC,  for what you are achieving. But as we are going through a constitutional review, I want to use the opportunity to ask the National Assembly to consider a special court that will be given these kind of cases to be managed,” he said.

Congratulatory messages  and admonition to the young cadets were made  by the Senate Committee Chairman on Anti-Corruption and Financial Crimes, Senator Emmanuel Udende and his House of Representatives counterpart,  Honourable Ginger Onwusibe .

Some of the cadets earned special recognition for their exemplary performance during the course of the training.  Amagiya Efe Princewill emerged Overall Best cadet in the superintendent category and Sanni Ayoola Blessing emerged Overall Best cadet in the Inspector cadre.

Gov. Ododo committed to improving road networks in Kogi – Commissioner

    By Noah Ocheni, Lokoja

The Kogi state Commissioner for Works, Mr Muhammed Yusuf on Tuesday in Abejukolo, reaffirmed commitment of the state to improving road networks across the state, with a focus on enhancing transportation of goods and services.

The Commissioner disclosed this during a media tour inspection of ongoing infrastructure projects in the Eastern Senatorial District of the state.

Yusuf highlighted the ongoing reconstruction of the 10-kilometre Bagana-Abejukolo dual carriage road in Abejukolo, the headquarters of Omala Local Government Area.

According to him, the project aims to ease the transportation of farm produce and movement of people in the area, thereby improving their livelihoods and boosting the economy of the state.

“We commend Ododo for the love he has for the people at the grassroots by creating accessibility from one community to another to ease movement of motorists and farm produce from the farms to the markets,” Yusuf said.

The Commissioner for Information and Communication, Mr Kingsley Fanwo, also emphasised the government’s commitment to balancing projects across the three senatorial districts of the state.

“It is not about executing projects but balancing the projects across the three senatorial districts of the state.

“We have seen the projects execution in Kogi west and today we are in Kogi east.

“Next week it will be the turn of central senatorial district,” Fanwo said.

He assured that the government will continue its giant strides in improving the living standard of the people, especially residents at the grassroots.

Also at Ankpa, Yusuf hinted that the erosion control and road projects of the government being handled by Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACRESAL) had drastically reduced flooding and erosion in Ankpa.

He said that the projects, including the one-by-one meter height drain serve as channels to control erosion effectively in Ankpa and environs.
