A’ibom@38: Gov Eno lauds IBB, wants respect for Akpabio, others

    By Ogenyi Ogenyi, Uyo

Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom has lauded ex President Ibrahim Babangida for creating a homogenous state for the mainland part of the old Cross River State after several decades of agitation.

He has also cautioned citizens and residents of the state against disrespecting past governors of the state no matter the level of political and ideological differences.

Eno who made this known in a broadcast to mark the 38tt anniversary of the creation of the state said the move was a unique gift by the former President to the people of the area adding that the state would continue to be grateful and pray for his health

The Governor insisted that despite numerous challenges it has been a journey of renewal, phenomenal infrastructural and social growth, undiluted peace, deepening of bonds of unity, kindred spirit and pride in the collective identity.for the people of the area.

“It has been a journey that will gladden the hearts of our founding fathers who had prayed, consulted and dreamed of a homogeneous state of shared values, ethos and drive, but their hope was not realized in their time
    It

“Let me again, on behalf of the Government and people of this great State, thank and celebrate our former Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, GCFR (rtd.), for this unique gift. May God continue to bless him with good health, a sound mind and spirit.

“Thirty-eight years ago, this State, especially the Capital City of Uyo, was for all intents and purposes, a glorified village – a rural backwater bereft of modern infrastructure.

“Today, thirty-eight years later, our State has become the destination of choice, the nation’s best kept secret. In place of dusty narrow streets, some of which looked like bush tracks, we now have possibly the best road network in the nation. Our people, long thought to be mostly good at performing domestic chores, have all arisen and are holding commanding positions across the world in various professions.

“Uyo today is home to some of the most elegant housing estates in the nation. A thriving airline, Ibom Air, carries our flag of excellence in the nation’s aviation sector – signposting our ascendancy in that sector.” Eno said.

Respect for the former leaders of the state he said should be the least thing indigenes should do to repay them for their unique services to Akwa Ibom.

“These leaders were passionate, determined and focused in moving our State forward, and we should celebrate and honour them for their service to the State, rather than disrespecting or castigating their legacies. We owe them deep respect.” He maintained.

His administration the Governor said has continued to increase and improve social infrastructure access roads in rural communities and have expanded the road infrastructure in the state by 771 kilometres of either commissioned or ongoing with some inherited from past administrations.

“Our schools and healthcare services remain major areas of attention. We will continue to build model healthcare centres across the State as well as model primary and secondary schools in the three senatorial districts.

“The emergency we recently declared in the healthcare sector will address the gaps in that sector. We hope to flag -off the construction of our 350-bed Ibom International Hospital along the medical corridor as well as the commissioning of the Arise Elders Care Centre, also along the same corridor.

“Through our administration’s compassionate interventions, we have built 267 fully furnished and solar-powered two-bedroom flats out of 500 planned for the vulnerable. In addition, our free food distribution programme, drawn from the State’s verified Social Registe, is now in its third phase, and we have so far reached over 500,000 households.

“We are priming our State as the tourism hub of the nation. Our audacious Arise Resort, which has been celebrated by all who have inspected it, will be commissioned in December and is expected to draw visitors in millions to our State. We are building the 5,000-capacity International Convention Centre, the 200-room Ibom Hotel and Arise City Centre – all located within the Tropicana grounds.

“The Ibom Hotels and Apartments in Abuja as well as Ibom Towers and Apartments in Lagos – all previously moribund State assets which we have now converted into money-earning ventures – are ongoing.” Eno explained.

He appealed to the people to remain united, peaceful, and hopeful and urged
, “us not to allow the flaming passion of politics to divide us. Elections will come and go, but the Akwa Ibom spirit of love and brotherhood will remain. We are running Akwa Ibom United across party lines.

“I urge our leaders and stakeholders not to engage in spreading damaging or inflammatory rhetoric, but to “ rise beyond ethnicity” and “ build with love our promise land” as our State Anthem has so greatly enjoined us to.” The Governor concluded.

  • Rivers: As Gov Sim Fubara returns, tendencies to probe Ibok-Ete rend the air

Rivers: As Gov Sim Fubara returns, tendencies to probe Ibok-Ete rend the air

    By George OPARA
    South South Editor

The return to democratic governance under Governor Siminialayi Fubara has come with a barrage of tendencies to probe Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd) who called the shots under the just ended six-month emergency rule in Rivers state as sole administrator.

In the metropolis of Port Harcourt, the state capital and beyond, the topical issue on the lips of not a few Nigerians is whether the most dreaded anti-graft agency – the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) will initiate an investigation into how the state’s resources were expended during the undemocratic era.

Against the backdrop of political acrimony involving Governor Fubara and, predecessor now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FTC, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, state legislature which threatened law and public order, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu proclaimed a six-month emergency rule in the state.

The president’s action halted democratic institutions including the legislature, saddling Ibas with powers to run the state without legislative checks while key financial decisions only revolved around him as sole administrator.

In that period, the National Assembly passed the Rivers State 2025 appropriation bill with a budget figure of about ₦1.485 trillion. Ibas defended the spending before federal lawmakers and later justified an adjusted figure that some reports put at ₦1.846 trillion, attributing the hike to the inclusion of first-quarter expenditures and continuity projects. He explained that allocations went to critical infrastructure, pension and gratuity arrears, job creation initiatives, and security operations.

Ibok-Ete, however, in a recent state l function handed over on September, 18 yet, there are bourgeoning agitations demanding for accountability for the humongous funds he supritended while in office.

The newly reinstated state legislature going through its constitutional mandate has indicated interest to carry out an oversight function on the accrued accounts of the emergency period.

In like manner, Civil society groups and political actors are calling on the National Assembly and EFCC to probe the sole administrator’s financial stewardship essentially as he had direct access to state funds seized while Fubara was in office by the federal government, warning that the nation’s polity has been immersed in systemic corruption.

Allegations abound that under the former Naval officer’s watch he allegedly made reckless withdrawals running into billions from local government accounts.

Amidst the alleged financial indispline, it was reported that security aides have had to even protest over unpaid entitlements during Ibas’s interim regime besides, complaints of irrational appointments and decisions on the countdown to his exit from office.

Part of the reports alleged that a staggering ₦27.6 billion was deducted from the accounts of the state’s 23 local government councils. According to local officials, each council had ₦1 billion withdrawn from its August 2025 allocation, while an earlier ₦200 million was also taken from council coffers at Ibas’s express directive.

While some critics said “those withdrawals, came in addition to other unexplained deductions, heavy spending, and controversial transactions running into billions of naira from the state’s treasury”.

Others demanded, ” Ibas should account for the nearly ₦300 billion reportedly handed over by suspended Governor Fubara in March, as well as disclose total revenues received during his tenure, including federal allocations, 13 percent oil derivation funds, internally generated revenue, and foreign and local donations”.

Specifically, Human rights and political groups have petitioned to the EFCC and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), to swing into action over the shady deals perpetrated by Ibas.

Specifically, the Niger Delta Advocates for Good Governance (NDAGG), a prominent pressure group in a statement said, “Ibas was on a mission to milk Rivers dry.”

Spokesman of the group, Chief Honest Nwenenda Woke, thus, profiled his regime as, “ ” “a dangerous financial mismanagement and brazen looting of local government funds.”

Woke alleged that in July 2025, Woke said, “Ibas personally directed deductions of more than ₦200 million from each of the 23 local councils without providing explanations.

“On September 9 meeting of the Joint Accounts Allocation Committee (JAAC) in Port Harcourt, the sole administrator ordered another ₦1 billion deduction per council, ostensibly for pension settlements.

“What is most troubling is the desperation to drain the state’s finances while boasting about saving ₦5 billion from the wage bill in August. His credibility is in doubt, because apart from paying salaries, Rivers people have not seen commensurate performance for the billions spent.”

Apart from Woke, Chief Opunabo Inko-Tariah, former aide to ex-Governor Nyesom Wike, and Comrade Charles Jaja, a human rights activist, have individually insisted on an independent probe into Ibas’s contentious era, citing a lack of openness and diligence in the management of state funds.

Yet, NDAGG confirmed it has written to her foreign associates and governments, demanding for a travel bans on Ibas pending when clears himself of the weighty allegations stacked against him. It emphasized that unless the stringent actions as requested are established, the case of Ibas won’t serve as a deterrent to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic system and processes.

The critics in their beliefs said if the practice of emergency rule is dictated to bypass normal democratic processes, then accountability being the hallmark of democracy should be activated with the restoration of democracy in the state.
The anti-graft bodies must see it as a wake up call to scrutinize bank records, procurement files, payrolls, Internally Generated Revenues, IGR, and the reconciliation of budget figures with actual spending.

This measure, insider sources said, was far away from victimization or witch-hunting, but meant to strengthen public trust that the state funds were properly utilized.

At the moment, political observers and critics have the belief that shortly it would be clearer whether the emergency rule was a conduit pipe to scoop the state resources ahead of 2027 general polls or a justifiable measure to detonate a looming crisis then as claimed.

Next to the uncertain democratic landscape in the state is how to curb the frenzy political dynamics of realignment, permutations and expectations which analysts posited are yet, potent landmines ready to explode someday.

  • Fmr Nigeria’s SGF Gidado Idris’ family in disputes over Inheritance

Stepmother allegedly barred siblings from property, ignore court orders
…Children cry out for public Intervention
    .. Emirs C’tee allegedly biased

    By Our Correspondent

Battle over inheritance has broken out between family members of late former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Alhaji Saidu Gidado Idris, with some of his children accusing their stepmother of allegedly denying them access to their father’s property and ignoring court orders.

Speaking on behalf of his siblings, one of the late Idris’ sons, Saidu, alleged that since their father’s death in 2017, they had been barred from entering his Abuja residence to take inventory of his belongings as prescribed under Islamic law.

“We, the seven siblings from our late mother’s side, have not been allowed into our father’s room to see his Will or property documents. This is contrary to Islamic injunctions. It is clear to us that there is injustice and inhumanity here,” he alleged.

According to him, an initial court ruling awarded the late SGF’s Aso Drive residence in Abuja and another house at Coronation Crescent in Kaduna to their stepmother.

Dissatisfied, the siblings appealed and secured a judgment granting them properties in Zaria, but those assets were later, allegedly sold by their stepmother.

He said the court subsequently ordered her to compensate them with ₦185 million, a judgment allegedly flouted to date.

The aggrieved siblings said efforts to resolve the matter outside court also collapsed. “I contacted General Abdulsalami Abubakar, who involved the Emir of Zazzau to set up a committee. But the committee was biased and could not resolve the dispute. They even offered us land along Kaduna-Zaria road, but we rejected it. Our father gave us properties before he died, yet our stepmother sold them all,” he claimed.

He added that although they have since withdrawn the case from court, they are now appealing to the public and rights groups to intervene.

“Our father was a just and gentle man. He couldn’t have died without leaving a Will. We believe it is locked in the room we have been denied access to. We want Nigerians to know the truth, because this injustice is painful. We need prayers, sympathy and intervention. It appears our stepmother is above the law,” he said.

The Upper Sharia Court in Kaduna reportedly ruled in 2020 that the stepmother should pay the children ₦185 million, but according to the complainants, she has refused to comply.

The late Idris was survived by one wife and 12 children. His family consisted of three wives , one deceased, one divorced, and the surviving widow at the centre of the current controversy.

As at the time of filing this report, efforts to reach the stepmother for her reaction were unsuccessful.

  • A’ibom moves to end epileptic electricity at Summit

A’ibom moves to end epileptic electricity at Summit

    By Ogenyi Ogenyi,,Uyo

In a renewed move to end electricity nightmare for residents, Akwa Ibom government has launched a bold initiative to transform the state’s electricity landscape, prioritizing optimal availability, affordability, and accessibility.

It has also set up the state electricity policy and enacted the state electricity law to regulate all electricity related matters in the area.

At a two-day State’s Electricity Summit at Ikot Ekpene yesterday, Governor Umi Eno said the summit marks a turning point in the electricity sector of the State.

Eno regretted that despite owning a power plant for decades, most parts of the state has continued to grapple with frequent power outages or lack of it resulting in low productivity and economic loss

“For decades, our people have lived with the paradox of great energy potential but could not fully appropriate the gift. We are blessed with abundance of gas, a state-owned power plant, yet too many of our homes, businesses, schools, and hospitals are grappling with epileptic power supply.” The Governor stated.

He queried the rationale behind the State-owned Ibom Power Company with installed capacity of 191MW not working optimally since its establishment in 2001, despite the huge investment in it.

“These are very hard questions, and we will dare to tread on grounds that angels fear to tread on during this summit. The hard questions must be asked; answers must be proffered; and actions must be taken to get our power sector working excellently to benefit our people and our State.” He said.

He enjoined stakeholders at the summit to make it a worthwhile engagement, and not a talk shop, adding that the Summit should chart a roadmap, and be seen as a call to action with clear timelines.

Eno disclosed that the State’s vision for total electricity access is anchored on a simple principle that electricity must not be seen as a luxury but as a fundamental enabler of modern life.

He sued for a collective aspiration by Governors to convene energy and security summit that are deliberately planned and purposefully executed, saying that under the State’s Eectricity Policy 2024 and Electricity Law 2025, legal regulatory and policy foundations have been established to regulate the State electricity market.

He called for quality collaboration between the Federal Government and States as envisaged in the electricity Act, promising that the State’s electricity reforms would be attained within the context of Nigeria’s reforming, reshaping, and re-designing electricity supply industry.

He, therefore, assured investors of his commitment to provide the necessary facilities and level-playing field for them to invest and produce clean energy in the State adding that the State is already integrating clean energy solutions into its vision to ensure that model healthcare centres, schools, and other critical State’s facilities and services are no longer depending on unreliable power supply.

“Our Compressed Natural Gas mass transportation plan, introduction of electric vehicles, and other energy renewable initiatives are all part of the deliberate strategy to reduce emission, cut cost, and build a sustainable energy future.

“In Akwa Ibom State, electricity sector governance will be professional, transparent, and entirely citizen-focused. Only by so doing, can we put in place a State electricity sector that will stand the test of time.”

“Let us make our State an outstanding model for sub national electricity reform in Nigeria, because when we electrify Akwa Ibom State and enable reliable, affordable, and clean electricity across the State, we are creating an Akwa Ibom in which we all rise and stand tall together to truly arise to a renewed hope,,”He said.

Speaking on behalf of Akwa Ibom Stakeholders, Senator Ekong Sampson said it was a delight to see how the Governor was driving transformation in the State, and assured that members of the National Assembly will completely align with the vision of the Governor to reposition the sector.

Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu who was represented by his Chief Technical Adviser, Mr Adedayo Olowoniyi felicitated the State on the determination to reform the electricity sector for affordable and universal access to power, and assured of the support of the Federal Government.

Earlier, in her welcome address as the Chairman of the State’s Electricity Reform Committee, the State Deputy Governor, Senator Akon Eyakenyi, noted that the stakeholders are not merely gathered to discuss ideas but to align politics, policy, and investment with the technical and financial reforms that can deliver real change.

According to her, with the theme of the summit “Attaining Energy Security and Universal Access for Akwa Ibom State within the Framework of the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry,” the State is strongly determined to come out with the workable key to provide sustainable, clean, accessible and affordable electricity for the people to live comfortably.

In a keynote address, Team Leader – Power, United Kingdom Nigeria Infrastructure Advisory Facility, Eyo Ekpo, enumerated five strategic priorities that must be addressed by any credible State electricity reforms.

They include Operationalise AKSERC, bringing together the elements of the State electricity value chain in a mutually-supporting commercial framework that is focused on serving the State first and foremost, and Focus on the off-grid market too, among others.

Highpoint of the event was the unveiling of the State Electricity Policy, and the State Electricity Law by the Governor.
