Tinubu tasks Catholic Bishops on national peace and development

    By Ogenyi Ogenyi, Uyo

President Bola Tinubu has called on faith leaders in Nigeria to continue championing interfaith harmony, denouncing violence and working tirelessly for reconciliation in communities torn apart by conflicts.

The President made the appeal on Sunday in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom, at the opening of the Second Plenary Meeting of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN).

Tinubu, who was represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, said the role of religious leaders in shaping values and building trust among citizens cannot be overemphasised, stressing that faith-based organisations remained a vital bridge for peace, unity, and moral renewal in the country.

The President commended the Catholic Bishops and other clerics across denominations for their consistent efforts in promoting dialogue and tolerance despite Nigeria’s diversity.

According to him, genuine reconciliation and national cohesion can only be achieved when spiritual leaders continue to preach messages of peace and actively discourage extremism, hatred, and divisive tendencies.

Tinubu further assured the gathering that his administration is committed to addressing the root causes of insecurity and social unrest, including poverty, unemployment, and inequality and urged them to complement government efforts by providing guidance to their followers.

“The Catholic Church has been a credible partner in the journey towards national renewal. Your investments in education, health and socal welfare – often in remote and underserved communites – speak louder than words. You have stood with the people in times of hardship, provided comfort in times of grief and raised your voice against injustice and corruption.

“I encourage you to continue speaking truth to power not only to government but to all sectors of society – while also offering constructive solutions that will help us collectively build a nation where integrity, hard work and compassion are the hallmarks of public and private life.’ He said.

The President explained that his administration has already taken bold and decisive steps to stabilise the economy in the face of daunting challenges inherited over the years.

According to him, measures such as the removal of fuel subsidies, efforts to unify the exchange rate, and initiatives aimed at curbing leakages in public finances are designed to restore confidence in the system and create a more sustainable economic foundation.

These policies, though demanding sacrifices in the short term, he noted, were necessary to reposition Nigeria on the path of growth and long-term prosperity.

The President further emphasised that beyond stabilisation, his government is working assiduously to attract both local and foreign investments by creating an enabling environment for businesses to thrive, ongoing reforms in key sectors such as agriculture, energy, and infrastructure and carefully structured to deliver enduring benefits that would uplift the lives of citizens and secure a brighter economic future for the nation.

“This administration came into office with a firm commarmert to renew hope, strengthen our democratic institutions and build a Nigeria that works for all. We have taken bold steps to stabilize the economy, attract investment and implement reforms that will, in due course, yield enduring benefits for our people. We recognize that good governance is not just about economic growth, it is about justice, fairness, transparency, accountability and the dignity of every Nigerian.

“It s also about ensuring that no one is left behind – whether in urban centres or rural communities, whether majority or minonty, whether rich or poor. Our efforts in tackling Insecurity, expanding social investment programmes, strengthening agriculture and revitalizing infrastructure are all geared towards creating an enabling environment for Nigerians to live in peace and fulfil their God-given potential.

“Let me re-assure you all that the Federal Government remains open to deepening collaboration with the Catholic Church and other faith-based Organisations in key sectors such as education, healthcare, socal welfare and skills development. Together, we can tackle poverty, reduce inequality and build stronger communties.” He noted.

He further urged the Church to collaborate with the government in advancing civic education, protecting the environment, and empowering young people, so that future generations of Nigerians will gain not only academic knowledge but also the values needed to uphold the moral fabric of society.

Insecurity: Enough is Enough – Ex-APC Chieftain Tells Tinubu

    By Mike Odiakose, Abuja

Obviously piqued by the seeming helplessness of present administration in tackling insecurity in the country, a former Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr Jackson Lekan Ojo, has called on President Bola Tinubu to declared State of Emergency in the entire Northern states.

In a message to President Tinubu sent through his his Facebook page, Dr Lekan Ojo, a Certified Security Expert, said Nigeria is becoming a laughing stock in the comity of nations because of the failure of the government to protect its citizens from brazen attacks by bandits.

Dr Lekan Ojo, however, gave a caveat that the State of Emergency in the North he is advocating for should not affect Democratic institutions in the affected states.

“I am lending my voice to the request by the Northern Elders Forum last week that Mr President should declared State of Emergency in the entire Northern Nigeria.

I think it is high time this is done. You heard what the governor of Borno State has just announced about the number of people that were slaughtered in the last two days. This is unacceptable.

“I think it is time for Mr President to militarise the entire Northern Nigeria to smoke out all these bandits and snuff out life out of them.

“Enough is enough. No matter the sponsors, no matter the backers, no matter the informants, these people cannot be greater than the Nigerian government.

“Mr President should over-police the entire Northern Nigeria, we should smoke out these people (bandits) and send them back to their creator.

“Enough is enough. Enough of other countries turning Nigeria into a laughing stock. Mr President should hacken to this clarion call.

“Mr President can declared State of Emergency on insecurity without anything that will affect the Democratic institutions in the Northern Nigeria.

“We cannot take this again, enough is enough.”

“God bless Mr President, God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria and God bless Nigerians.”

  • Group writes Tinubu, others, wants even distribution of pipeline surveillance to cub oil theft

Group writes Tinubu, others, wants even distribution of pipeline surveillance to cub oil theft

    By Our Correspondent

The federal government has been called upon not to re-award all the pipeline surveillance jobs in the entire Niger Delta to one man.

A sociocultural group operating under the aegis of Southern Ijaw Forum who made the call in an open letter to the President said “this is the time to share it among the major stakeholders so that they can cover the whole area to put an end to oil theft,”

The group asked the President not to re-award pipeline surveillance contracts to the current beneficiaries whose contracts have expired, but rather decentralize it across board for all major stakeholders in the Niger Delta struggle.

It said this is because Nigeria is not making any progress at all in the fight against oil theft, pipeline vandalization and illegal refining of petroleum products.

In a statement issued to newsmen on Monday, the chairman of the Forum, Comrade Timothy Amadiowei, hinged the failure on the federal government’s refusal to heed wise counsel from the beginning, saying that this resulted in oil theft under the cover of surveillance activities, brewing crisis in the Niger Delta, and loss of innocent lives in illegal detention centres – acts that are capable of smearing the image of the Nigerian government at the international level.

Amadiowei said the Muhammadu Buhari-led government and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) were made to believe the illusion that one man is king of the Niger Delta and that awarding the pipeline surveillance contract to him would automatically end the war against oil theft.

He said this fairytale is what made the federal government to neglect the expertise of other renowned freedom fighters in the Niger Delta, and awarded the contract to one man alone to secure pipelines in the territories of other ex-agitators who have paid their dues and worked so hard to ensure peace and political stability in the region but were later pushed aside.

Amadiowei reminded the nation that it is not only the current beneficiaries that worked for the APC government, and it is very unfair that after major stakeholders like Alhaji Asari Dokubo and Endurance Amagbein (just to mention a few) have worked so hard for the APC government, they are neglected and what should have been shared evenly amongst the ex-militants for equity and fairness was given to one man who has refused to carry people along.

According to him, the federal government is winning the fight against oil theft only on the news, but in reality, the illegal business is thriving daily – with most filling stations selling only adulterated fuel.

He urged President Bola Tinubu, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPCL, Mr. Bashir Ojulari, and the National Security Adviser, Nihu Ribadu, to take the bold step in correcting the errors made by the past administration, and yield to the demand of the Niger Delta people that the pipeline surveillance contracts be decentralized and shared to all deserving stakeholders.

Amadiowei urged the federal government not to engage in shadowboxing when help is available.

He said, “The only solution to oil theft and illegal refining of petroleum products is decentralization, because nobody is happy with the anomalies on ground.”

“Every stakeholder is angry with the current arrangement, how can one man from Delta State whose kingdom comprises only 8 communities be awarded a surveillance contract to secure pipelines in the territories of other stakeholders as in the case with Bayelsa State?”

“Carry everybody along, and you’ll see the difference, and I can tell you boldly that there are renowned ex-agitators who have the answers the government is seeking, but they are just watching the federal government struggle because the government has failed to approach them for help.”

“If you think you’ve seen pipeline security, then wait until the likes of Alhaji Asari Dokubo, King Ateke Tom and Endurance Amagbein, who understand the Niger Delta terrain more than anybody else, come into the picture with what they have to offer.”

“And so we are joining the host of other Niger Delta stakeholders who have seen that the only way to win this fight is decentralization and bringing everyone onboard.”

“Let everybody secure their own domains, because if anybody is doing illegal bunkering in my community, I know them and I know how to deal with them, but a stranger does not know them and so it’s difficult to stop them.”

“If you are from Delta State, stay in Delta and secure the pipelines in your area, if you are from Rivers State, stay in Rivers and secure pipelines there, if you are from Bayelsa, stay there and secure pipelines there, likewise the other states producing crude oil and gas.”

How Sujimoto CEO, Ogundele, Defrauded Enugu State Government of N5.7bn – Official

… Accuses him of premeditated fraud

    By Our Correspondent

The Enugu State Government has accused the CEO of Sujimoto Luxury Construction Limited, Olasijibomi Ogundele, of defrauding the state of nearly N6bn, noting that Ogundele vanished into thin air after he was paid the said sum for the construction of 22 Smart Green Schools in different parts of the state.

The government also accused Ogundele of premeditated fraud, explaining that while he presented a bond issued by Jaiz Bank to secure the contract, he used the company’s Zenith Bank account registered with the state’s Ministry of Works and Infrastructure to receive the said payment, making it impossible for the state to hold Jaiz Bank liable.

The clarifications were contained in a statement issued by the Enugu State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Dr. Malachy Agbo, on Friday.

The statement said, “For the avoidance of doubt, on July 2, 2024, the Enugu State Government awarded a contract in the sum of N11,457,930,950.52 to Sujimoto Luxury Construction Ltd for the construction of 22 Smart Schools (buildings only) in six months starting from the date of the acceptance of the award.

“The Enugu State Government paid the sum of N5,762,565,475.25, representing 50 per cent of the contract sum, in order to fast-track the projects at all the sites.

“Rather than play to the rules of the contract to deliver quality projects for furnishing and equipping ahead of September 2025 school resumption, in line with the priority placed on the Smart Green Schools initiative by the government, Mr. Ogundele resorted to shoddy jobs and the use of inexperienced workers and quack engineers. None of his sites met the structural integrity of the projects as specified in the structural drawing.

“Worse still, he vanished into thin air with the money. All efforts made by the government to get him to a roundtable to discuss the quality and progress of work proved abortive. He equally refused to attend the periodic projects briefing organised by the state government for all contractors or take numerous calls and messages put across to him. In fact, he practically abandoned the sites, leaving the Enugu State Government with no other choice than to petition the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to recover the funds paid to him.

“A joint team of officers of the Enugu State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure and the EFCC visited the 22 sites to evaluate the progress of work on May 8 and 9, 2025, where it was clearly established that there had been minimal to no significant work done at the said sites one year after the contract award. In some cases, he fraudulently did not do excavation for all the blocks in site.

“It is also on record that he has not shown up at the sites or made himself available to either the state government or the law enforcement agencies even after those site visits.

“It is also pertinent to state that it was discovered in the course of investigation that whereas he presented a bond from Jaiz Bank, he used Sujimoto Luxury Construction Limited’s Zenith Bank account number 1312731196
to receive the said payment and draw down the fund without deploying it to the projects. This clearly shows a premeditated intent to defraud the state ab initio.

“The government has since retaken and handed over the sites to new firms, who has no choice than to start the construction afresh. Tremendous progress has been made to keep the determination of the Mbah Administration to migrate Enugu children to Smart Green Schools by September on track.

“Nigerians should therefore disregard his theatrics and crocodile tears, as Enugu State Government is determined to and will surely recover every penny of Ndi Enugu fraudulently obtained by Mr. Olasijibomi Ogundele (Sujimoto).”

The Enugu State Government’s statement was accompanied with pictures of the project sites as abandoned by Sujimoto, which were taken by the joint team of officials of the state and operatives of the EFCC during the May 8 and 9 site visits.

The pictures clearly showed that the project sites were mostly at the levels of foundation and DPC, with a few at the stage of block work.

  • China’s Global Governance Initiative (GGI): Implications And Prospect For A New World Order

China’s Global Governance Initiative (GGI): Implications And Prospect For A New World Order

    By Dr. Austin Maho

A critical examination of the recently unveiled Global Governance Initiative (GGI) by Chinese President Xi Jinping is revealing and ground breaking. What stand out is evident: equality, mutuality, rule based global order, shared development and shared future for mankind. These have implications in the search for a new global governance order, Africa and Nigeria.

Introduced at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Tianjin, China, the GGI seeks to promote a more just and equitable global governance system, addressing pressing global challenges and fostering international cooperation.

Why is President Xi Jinping’s new Global Governance Initiative unique and what are its implications and prospects ?

Unveiled at the recently concluded Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Tianjin, the GGI marks a significant shift in the global quest for a new world governance order.

Evidently, what the Tianjin summit demonstrates is that the SCO is no longer narrowly focused on security cooperation among member states but has transitioned instead to a global organization with a mandate covering economics, poliitics, development, and governance.

It is within this context that the Global Government Initiative, GGI, unveiled by President Xi Jinping must be understood.

At a time when the world is witnessing unilaterism, when globalization is being replaced by parochial nationalist, political ideology and rethorics, when tariffs have become the new weapon of global dominance and subjugation driving wedges among developing powers, the SCO stood as an venue not only for multilateral agreements but also for healing divides, fostering trust and building global consensus on governance.

The summit confirmed the SCO’s ambition to influence the shape of global governance. President Xi described the organization as a leader in promoting multipolarity and greater democracy in international relations. The Tianjin Declaration reflected this stance, laying out a shared vision of international order
anchored in the United Nations system, adjusted to nations’ perculiarities and conditions.

The current global order is structurally flawed and skewed in favor of the West. It reflects and promotes Western dominance rather than universally agreed norms. The Global Governance Initiative (GGI), is a counterpoise offering an alternative that is rooted in respect for sovereignty, multipolarity and a rule based global system with the United Nations at its core.

The GGI is built on five core principles: sovereign equality, international rule of law grounded in the UN Charter, multilateralism as the basis of governance, a people-centered approach that prioritizes common development, and pragmatism focused on measurable outcomes.

Beijing has identified the global financial system, artificial intelligence, cyberspace, climate change, international trade, and outer space as priority areas for rule-making. The GGI’s overarching goal is to create new institutions and norms that better represent the Global South, restore the UN’s centrality, and increase the effectiveness of global governance structure and mechanism.

Through the GGI, China is laying the intellectual ground work for the enthronwment of a new world order.

Since 2021 China has dedicated itself to providing the intellectual and philosophical foundation and push in building a new world order. We all share a common humanity irrespective of our differences. “A single flower does not make spring, while one hundred flowers in full bloom bring spring to the garden.” President Xi Jinping has quoted this old Chinese saying to express his vision on the common development of the world and to convey his appreciation of diversity and inclusiveness.

The GGI is the latest in a series of initiatives China has advanced to promote a new global order; before now there were the: The Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, and the Global Civilization Initiative. These proposals are the building blocks the philosophical and policy foundation for Xi’s broad concept of building a “community with a shared future for mankind.”

The aim is clear: to rally international support for a new, multipolar order that eliminates Western hegemony and safeguards peaceful coexistence among peoples of the world irrespective of ethic, religious or political differences.

Evidently, the Global Governance Initiative (GGI) is transformative and significant to the global south particularly Africa and Nigeria.

    AFRICA AND THE GGI

With FOCAC, China has always had Africa in its radar as a friend and a partner. The GGI would further consolidate this partnership as it aims to promote reforms in the UN Security Council and international financial system, allowing African countries to have a greater voice in global governance.

Currently, the United Nations is only “UNITED” by name but actually skewed in fabour of the West. Europe for instance in terms of landmass and population is incomparable to Africa but Europe has a total of 3 seats in the UN Security Council, with 2 being non-permanent seats and 1 permanent seat held by the United Kingdom and France, while africa has non!

This lack of representation is unfair. Africa constitutes over a quarter of the UN membership but has no permanent seats on the Security Council, despite being the subject of roughly 70% of the Council’s deliberations. Furthermore the five permanent members hold veto power, while African countries do not, despite their significant contributions to global peacekeeping. Consequently, the Council’s composition is seen as unrepresentative of the international community, with Africa’s voice often drowned in global power play.

This historical injustice hindged on a bygone colonial era inequalities does not reflect contemporary realities. A situation whereby some Western nations deploy the UN platform to prioritize their national interests over global peace and security, is counter productive to the UN Charter.
Africa’s interests and that of the global south as a whole must be represented
for global peace and sustainable development. The decades old cry for Africa to have two permanent seats with veto power would enhance its representation and influence and make the UN a truly global body that has divested itself from colonial mentality of treating Africa like a vassal.

The GGI can become the new platform for equity, justice and fairness for Africa.

Historically, China-Africa cooperation has a solid foundation, based on mutual trust and respect. Both have stood shoulder to shoulder to confront global challenges and promote mutual interests.

China has always supported Africa’s development, through the instrumentality of The Forum For China Africa Cooperation, FOCAC, China is providing the technology and capital for the development of critical infrastructure in connectivity, healthcare, agricultural, green energy among others.

At the 9th Forum on China-Africa Cooperation summit. (FOCAC Beijing summit of 2024),
China launched several cooperation plans with Africa, including the “Ten Cooperation Plans” and “Ten Partnership Actions for China-Africa Collaboration on Modernization”
According to Chinese President Xi Jinping, the partnership aims to deepen China-Africa cooperation and spearhead the Global South modernization and cooperation. The initiative covers areas such as mutual learning between civilizations, trade prosperity, industrial chain cooperation, and green development, among others with massive financial support running into hundreds of billions of RMB.

China has always being at the forefront of the campaign for a reformation of the UN
China has demonstrated committment to working with African countries to address global challenges through dialogue and a rule based United Nations.
Reforming and improving global governance which the GGI summit advocates cannot be achieved without an overhaul and critical reform of the UN in the promotion of a just and equitable global system that serves both the West and the South.

    NIGERIA AND THE GGI

As the largest country in Africa in terms of population and one of the largest economies, Nigeria is a key strategic partner of China.

Last year after the visit of Nigeria President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the 9th FOCAC in Beijing, a major outcome was the upgrade of China Nigeria relations to Comprehensive Strategic. The implication of this upgrade is massive and demonstrates the growing trust and comradeship between both countries working together to promote development and global governance reforms.

There is no doubt that the GGI can contribute to Nigeria’s economic growth by promoting infrastructure development, healthcare, and agricultural modernization.

Nigeria’s participation in the GGI can enhance its global influence, Nigeria has been at the forefront of Campaign for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), a camoaign anchored on its contributions to global peace and security. Nigeria’s Foreign Minister, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, has been vocal about the need for Nigeria’s inclusion in the UNSC for fair and equitable representation. The GGI can become the platform for this campaign.

Happily, the Chairman of the Nigerian House of Representatives Committee on Nigeria–China Parliamentary Relations Hon. Jaafaru Yakubu is on page and has expressed strong support for the GGI, describing it as a “timely and visionary framework for addressing the challenges of global governance in a rapidly changing world”, noting that its goals aligns closely with Nigeria’s foreign policy priorities and its commitment to South–South cooperation.

As Chairman of this very important Committee in the Nigeria Parliament Hon. Yakubu promised to provide legislative and institutional backing to ensure that Nigeria’s participation in the initiative results in concrete policies and programmes that deliver tangible benefits to citizens.

According to him, the GGI, framework presents opportunities for deeper cooperation between Nigeria and China stressing that such, “collaboration would not only support Nigeria’s national development agenda but also contribute to building a more balanced and inclusive international governance system that reflects the aspirations of emerging economies”, towards a fairer and more equitable world order.

Overall, the GGI has the potential to promote a more equitable, fair and just global governance system, with Africa and Nigeria playing a greater role in international affairs.

According to reports, she allegedly led thugs to Tasarrufi General Enterprise who attacked the factory workers on Thursday, August 28.

Mrs Salisu who is also the ALGON Chairperson, Kano State Chapter also allegedly led the thugs to attack some artisans and allegedly ordered her orderly to shoot leading to injuries.

Hon. Doguwa alleged that, the local government Chairperson simply went and ordered the attack on innocent persons and planned to demolish structures belonging to members of the opposition particularly the Tudun Wada Local government APC Chairman, Alhaji Suyudi Umar Tudun Wada and others.

Doguwa said, “What we have was a barbaric attack on our people and our party offices organised and perpetuated by the Chairman.”

“She simply went and opened fire on innocent persons at market place in the name of demolition of structures of members of the opposition. One of the most hit is the Tudun Wada Local Government APC Chairman, Alhaji Suyudi Umar Tudun Wada. They are always out for trouble under the guise of the ruling NNPP”, he lamented.

The lawmaker recalled the crisis between him and the ruling NNPP in the state in the last general election when they accused him of allegedly committing murder.

“Not untill when courts of competent jurisdictions cleared me at the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja and Kano respectively. The two judgements ultimately upheld the judgement and assigned payment of N25 million as cost against the Governor and Kano state government. “

Kano State Police Command has already invited the Tudun Wada Local Government Council Chairperson, Hajiya Sa’adatu Salisu over the allegations.

The Command’s Spokesperson, Abdullahi Kiyawa was on Thursday quoted as saying that, they have commenced investigation and have sent invitations to all the people involved, including the local government Chairperson.

“There is a formal complaint against the ALGON chairperson. All the witnesses and the suspect have been invited. The orderly to the ALGON chairperson has also been recalled to the command to give account of the matter”, he said.

Meanwhile a human rights organisation, Human Rights Network, HRN-NIGERIA has called for investigation into the matter.

In a letter signed by its Country Director and Legal Consultant, Comrade A.A Ayagi addressed to the Kano State Commissioner of Police, the organisation called on him to investigate the matter reported at its office against the Tudun Wada Local Government Chairperson, Hajiya Sa’adatu Salisu.
