  • DIWA Leads Peace Initiative Against Interreligious Violence

    From Abel Zwànke, Lafia

The Development Initiative of West Africa (DIWA) has launched a peace-building program aimed at bridging religious divides and preventing interreligious violence in the Middle Belt region.

At a one-day event in Lafia yesterday, religious leaders pledged to strengthen relationships and promote peaceful coexistence in their communities.

Musa Mohammed, DIWA’s Program Manager, emphasized the role of interfaith collaboration in sustaining peace.

“Building Bridges is an interreligious peace-building project designed to cement relationships between community members,” he said. “We are leveraging the influence, networks, and connections of religious and traditional leaders to serve as gatekeepers and engineers for sustained peace.”

He noted that the initiative is being implemented in three states, with Nasarawa selected as a model for peace-building efforts.

“Our approach is not just about dialogue in halls; it is about practical peace-building in communities,” Mohammed explained. “We are also engaging both social and conventional media to ensure widespread dissemination of peace initiatives.”

He further pointed out that despite ongoing peace efforts, gaps remain that some elements exploit to incite violence.

“A crucial gap exists—engagement with religious leaders. They hold significant influence, and one statement from them can shape an entire community,” he added. “We aim to rebuild social capital, foster mutual respect, and encourage economic and social cooperation across religious lines.”

Ango Adamu, Executive Secretary of YMCA Mada Hills and Coordinator of the African Activist for Climate Justice Project in Nasarawa, commended DIWA for the initiative.

“This project is vital for Nasarawa State. It unites people, fosters coexistence, and addresses divisive issues,” he said. “We are pleased that this program is happening here, especially when other states have been left out.”

Similarly, Hajiya Yagana Shani, a representative of the JNI Women Wing, stressed the importance of grassroots engagement, particularly among women.

“We have attended several peace meetings before, but we hope this initiative will have a lasting impact,” she said. “Women interact closely within their communities, and after this meeting, we will take the message back to our homes, families, and neighbors.”

She also cautioned against individuals exploiting religious and cultural differences for personal gain.

“Without peace, even food loses its taste,” Shani remarked. “We must not allow ourselves to be used by a few individuals to fight along religious, cultural, or tribal lines. These differences existed before us, and they should not be a source of division.”

The DIWA-led initiative aims to create long-term impact by fostering understanding and ensuring communities work together toward sustainable peace.

Stakeholders Unite to Address Cholera Outbreak in Bayelsa

    By Rhoda Godwin

Worried by several deaths across communities in Bayelsa, over 25 stakeholders from civil society, media, and health sectors at the weekend convened in Bayelsa State to address the recent cholera outbreak, emphasizing collaboration and strategic planning.

This gathering, organized by the Women Organized for Mentorship and Advocacy Network (WOMAN) in celebration of its first anniversary, aimed to unite efforts against the public health crisis.

The breakfast meeting with focused group discussion on recent cholera outbreak in Bayelsa state, highlighted the urgent need for effective strategies to combat cholera, a waterborne disease that poses significant health risks, particularly in areas lacking access to clean water.

In his contribution, Mr. Taritein Boco, Chairman of the Bayelsa Non-Governmental Organizations Forum (BANGOF), pointed out that many communities face challenges due to inadequate potable water systems, which are critical in preventing outbreaks.
Cholera is characterized by severe diarrhea and vomiting, leading to rapid dehydration and potential organ failure if untreated.

Pharm Anthony Oraekeye, Executive Director Comfort of the Afflicted said, the persistent loss of bodily fluids is frequently accompanied by vomiting, leading to rapid dehydration and loss of essential salts.

Oraekeye said, “when the body loses these critical salts, such as zinc and electrolytes, it disrupts normal physiological functions, resulting in muscle cramps and weakness. If not promptly treated, severe dehydration can lead to organ failure and even death.

“This is why cholera outbreaks are considered a public health emergency that requires urgent intervention. Whether at the state primary healthcare level or the national health ministry, prompt reporting is critical to containing the spread.

“Cholera outbreaks affect not only individuals but also entire communities. If an outbreak occurs, businesses shut down, the workforce is reduced, and the economy suffers. People avoid gatherings for fear of infection, and students are unable to attend school. The overall impact extends beyond health—it disrupts livelihoods and social activities.”

Earlier, Lady Eunice Nnachi, Executive Director of WOMAN, underscored the organization’s commitment to empowering women and fostering community development. She emphasized that collaboration among stakeholders is vital for creating sustainable solutions to public health challenges.

“Over the past year, we have worked tirelessly to create a platform where women can come together, support one another, and advocate for their rights. We have made significant strides in promoting mentorship, advocacy, and community development in the Niger Delta region.

“As I reflect on our progress, I am reminded of the power of collaboration and the importance of our shared values. Our team members and partners have demonstrated a humble willingness to listen, step up, and support one another. This spirit of collaboration has been the driving force behind our successes.

“Today, we gather to celebrate not only our achievements but also the relationships we have built along the way. We are proud to call many of you our friends and partners in the critical work of creating access to opportunity across the Niger Delta region.

“As we look to the future, we remain committed to our mission of empowering women and promoting community development. We will continue to work together to create a more vibrant and welcoming community, one that is more affordable and accessible for all residents over the long term.”

  • 2027: We will not join any coalition with North-East, North-West – APC Forum

2027: We will not join any coalition with North-East, North-West – APC Forum

    By Isreal Adamu, Jos

Ahead of the 2027 general election, the North-Central All Progressives Congress, APC, Forum has declared that the North-Central zone will not go into any coalition with the North-East and the North-West.

There are speculations that ex-vice president Atiku Abubakar, former governors of Kaduna and Rivers states, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai and Rotimi Amaechi, and Labour Party, LP, presidential candidate in 2023, Peter Obi, are planning to join forces against President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

The speculations heightened after the opposition politicians criticised Tinubu’s government and the ruling APC at the National Conference on Strengthening Democracy in Nigeria, held on Monday, 27th January 2025, in Abuja.

El-Rufai at the event urged opposition parties to unite and form a broad coalition to challenge the APC and protect democracy in the country.

In a statement made available to journalists on Saturday in Abuja, the North-Central APC Forum said the zone would not be part of any coalition that includes the North-East and the North-West.

In the statement signed by its Chairman,
Alhaji Saleh Zazzaga, a member of the APC presidential campaign council in the 2023 election, the Forum said the North-Central does not want a repeat of what happened after it played a major role in the coalition that led to the formation of the APC and emergence of the government of ex-President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015.

In February 2013, Nigeria’s three biggest opposition parties at the time – the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, the Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, the All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP – teamed up with a faction of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, and a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to form the APC.

The CPC camp, which was led by Buhari, included Governor Tanko Al-Makura of Nasarawa State, from the North-Central.

As at the time of the merger, the North-West zone had only one governor among the parties in the coalition – Zamfara State governor Abdul’aziz Abubakar Yari of the ANPP.

The ACN was led by Tinubu, who later became the national leader of the APC.

The only ACN governor at the time of the merger, Dr. Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State, left office in October 2014, months after the new party was formed. Although Peter Obi was Anambra State governor on APGA’s platform at the time of the merger, he was not part of the party’s faction that joined to form the APC.

The statement noted that the North-Central was relegated to the background by the North-East and the North-West during Buhari’s administration, despite playing a major role in the coalition that brought the government.

“The North-Central brought a sitting governor in the coalition. Many of the other zones did not bring anything.

“Tanko Al-Makura of Nasarawa State in the North-Central was the only sitting governor from the opposition camp that actively participated in forming the APC.

“But it is unfortunate that after he became President, Buhari did not even consider that when we asked for the position of Speaker and the position was taken to Lagos.

“During Buhari’s government the North-Central suffered most – we were denied infrastructure, our roads were not attended to and the high level ot insecurity in the region was not addressed.

“Instead the North-East and the North-West concentrated all the benefits in their zones. Federal appointments, which many Nigerians believed favoured the North, only went to the two zones. The North-Central was left out,” the statement said.

According to the APC Forum, the request by the North Central Elders Forum, NCEF, for the zone to be given the chance to produce the Speaker of the House of Representatives in 2019, was rejected by the the APC leadership because Buhari, from the North-West, did not approve the plea.

The statement added that the position of Senate President in the Buhari government, which went to the North-Central following the election of Senator Bukola Saraki, from Kwara State, should have been retained by the zone during Buhari’s second term.

Ahmed Lawan, from Yobe State, replaced Saraki as Senate President in Buhari’s second term, serving in the position from June 2019 to the end of the administration in 2023.

The North-Central APC Forum said not retaining the Senate presidency in the zone, after Saraki’s tenure, was an injustice to the region.

Distancing the North-Central from the coalition, the statement added, “Whatever Atiku Abubakar and Mallam Nasir El-Rufai are doing is for their own benefit, not even in the interest of the North-East and North-West.

“Nigerians should also bear in mind that all these politicians who are attacking President Bola Tinubu today are just frustrated individuals who are angry that they are not part of the government.

“They will be singing a different song if they are part of the government.

“We restate our position that no magic would make President Bola Tinubu lose his bid for reelection in 2027 – not even the alliance and coalition of these political leaders. We are confident that Nigerians will once again chose the APC government in the next election because of the good performance of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

“However, the North-Central APC Forum wishes to make it clear that the North-Central zone will not be part of any coalition with the North-East and the North-West.

“It is very imperative that we make this point because we have observed that the planned coalition is being championed by politicians from these two zones – His Excellency Alhaji Atiku Abubakar from the North-East and Mallam Nasir El-Rufai from the North-West.”

  • Two protests rocks FTHL in one week as Kogi Doctors Sends SOS to Tinubu

Two protests rocks FTHL in one week as Kogi Doctors Sends SOS to Tinubu

    By Noah Ocheni, Lokoja

The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), Federal Teaching Hospital Lokoja (FTHL) chapter has once again called on President Bola Tinubu and the minister of health Ali Pate to launch an investigation on the wickedness, decay of facilities and the inhuman treatment going on at the Federal Teaching Hospital Lokoja before the hospital collapse totally.

Members of the association also demanded for the immediate reinstatement of their President, Dr. Jimoh Umar who was suspended last year over the association’s activities.

Speaking during another peaceful protest at the premises of the hospital in Lokoja on Friday, Dr Olushola Baoku, the immediate past Chairman of the association revealed that the hospital before now had 315 doctors, lamenting that today the hospital can only boast of only 43 doctors because of poor working conditions.

Dr Baoku stressed that many of the doctors in the employment of the hospital are on a devilish contract where the doctors have to renew their contract every two months with the management, describing the situation as ridiculous in a country that is spending much in the health sector.

“This category of doctors have no pension , no promotion, no hazard allowance , no minimum wage award and they work on a harsh environment where facilities in the hospital are not functioning.

“We are aware that the federal government through the ministry of health has directed the management of the hospital to use the Internal Generated Revenue of the hospital to clear all outstanding arrears , we are shocked to hear that uptill now this hospital is owing humongous amount due for the workers of the hospital.

“Some of our doctors in this hospital in the last five years have been renewing their contract instead of the management to engage them fully. Since 2012 this hospital did not employ a single doctor and other health workers which has led to the acute shortage of manpower in all units and sections of the hospital.”

“In the last one week this is the third protest Resident Doctors in Federal Teaching Hospital Lokoja are staging. We have chosen to remain in this country to serve our father’s land but some people who believe they are above the law are making things worst and difficult for us and the hospital.”

“This hospital has been turn to a slave camp by Olatunde Alabi led administration. The hospital is nothing but doctors slave camp.”

“We have written 14 petitions to the minister of health Prof. Mohammed Ali Pate , to the SGF Senator George Akume , to the Head of Service of the federation and very recently to the Permanent Secretary federal ministry of health , to NMA leaders complaining the decay in this hospital and up till now nothing has been done.”

“Perhaps the authority concern have decided to allow this hospital to collapse because of the inaction of the few people that managed the hospital.”

“It was on record that an attendant that work in the hospital wasl sick and brought to Accident and Emergency Unit of the hospital. There was no light every where and that was how the women died of a sickness that can be treated supposing there was light. She worked in the hospital for over 20 years but died of an avoidable death.”

“The other time doctors and other health workers were beaten seriously by someone who brought a sick relation to the hospital because nothing could be done to safe life due to lack of unfunctional equipment.”

“The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital can not keep a patient for three hours because of lack of facilities and as a result of that the President of our association stood up to demand for a face lift in the hospital but the management started the persecution, suspension and now fake termination of Dr Jimoh Umar” he said

Dr Baoku, who alleged that the
Chief Medical Director of the hospital Dr. Olatunde Alabi has been foot dragging to reinstate Dr. Jimoh Umar the president of the association, said the minister of health through the Permanent Secretary had directed that Dr Umar be reinstated immediately.

“The Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof Ali Pate through the Permanent Secretary, Ms Kachollom Shangti Daju, has approved the reinstatement of Dr Jimoh Umar since December 12, 2024.”

“The letter got to the FTHL on January 11, 2025, but the CMD, Dr Olatunde Alabi, has deliberately refused to effect the content of the letter as directed by the Minister. All we are saying as doctors is that the CMD should obey the superior order according to the Section 3 of Civil Service Rule.

“It says refusal to treat official file, violation of auto secrecy, act unbecoming of a public officer and insubordination, are all acts of misconduct. All these are contained in the public service rule, and all of us are under the public service rules including the CMD” he stated.” End

Mairo said, “Under Operation Safe Corridor programme, we have deradicalised over 5,000 ex-combatants of Boko Haram and reunited them with their families.

“They are using the skills they have acquired in the six months of deradicalisation programme in the camp, to sustain themselves within the communities.

She further said that the “Borno Model” a state-led strategy, which aimed at reintegrating individuals who left extremist groups like Boko Haram, had complemented the efforts of the Federal Government to promote peace in the country.

“We always said ‘Borno Model’ is a model of necessity but we have recorded a lot of success with the Model because many repented fighters, have been reunited with families,” she added.

Mairo, however, urged the governors in the Lake Chad region and stakeholders to harmonise their strategy to ensure that they work on the same level.

Brig. Gen. Mohamadou Ibrahim Baga Doma, Governor of Diffa Region, Niger had reportedly severely criticized Nigeria government for pampering insurgent by given them money in the name of rehabilitation and repentant.

Also reacting, a northeast based rights activist, Rev. Accordingly, an Israeli country reps also allegedly kicked against the development, describing it as dangerous to their respective communities of the repentant Boko Haram returnees.

“We strongly oppose this ideology. How true have they repented and how did you ascertain this. We do not learn from our mistakes at all in this country.

“These are the people who killed thousands of citizens for no reason and will come back and say they have repented and they are reunited with their families. Why are supporting these evil men.

“The best is to send them to their graves as they did to others. Allowing them is dangerous to their respective communities. How are their community members whose relations were killed by them look at them? We are nursing another round of troubles because these same individuals will reorganize themselves and strike again. This is why crime on the rise.

‘Measures other than this is to publicly execute them to serve as deterrent to others who may be thinking of taking part in obnoxious behavior.

“We are not being fair to the society at all if truly integrating these set of wicked people into their communities”, it stated.

Prosperity Cup DG Attributes Tournament Success to Gov Diri’s Love for Sports Development

    By Rhoda Godwin

Director General of Nigeria’s biggest grassroots football tournament, the Bayelsa Governor’s Tournament, tagged the Prosperity Cup, Mr. Ono Akpe has attributed the success recorded in the tournament to governor Diri’s unwavering passion to grassroots sports development.

This year’s spectacle is expected to kick off this month across the eight local government areas in the state in 24 centers in a three category competition, which has male, female and the para category.

Mr. Akpe in an interview with journalists ahead of the tournament’s kick-off, said the governor is passionate to see that youths in the state earn a living through sports, pointing out that the state helmsman’s love for sports was the reason behind the tournament’s continuous innovation.

According to him, the governor’s direct involvement in the competition has driven members of the Central Organizing Committee (COC) to give their very best, maintaining that the local government level of the competition was the governor’s idea to ensure that players who did not make it to the money-spinning stage will also have the opportunity of being watched by foreign scouts.

He noted that apart from increasing the prize money of one million naira for local government champions and five hundred thousand naira for runner up, that this edition would see all the outstanding players in the LGA’s selected to form a team that would move to the second round, describing last LGA final as a resounding success.

On the selected local government teams, Mr. Akpe explained that the essence of the local government selected teams was to ensure that no good player is left out because he exited the tournament in the preliminary round, saying that this year’s edition would witness Most Valuable Player award (MVP) in every match.

With the sale of registration forms for season seven currently ongoing, the DG believes that more players from this season would join the players who are on the verge of traveling to Turkey, Malta and Lithuania for greener pasture, noting that five players from the previous scouting programme are set to leave the country with their visas already sorted out.

Mr. Akpe asserted that the vision of the organizers at the end of the season seven was to see more than ten players plying their trade with different European clubs, stating that the organizers of the showpiece are desirous to give the youths in the state a better life.

He stressed that the reports from the security agencies whenever the competition is on, speaks volume of the impact the showpiece has made in the state.

He further explained that each team is entitled to sets of jerseys in both male, female and para soccer including coaches, goalkeepers as well as tournament match balls, maintaining that over 250 teams receive sets of jerseys every year and another set of jerseys for any team that qualifies to the next phase of the competition.

Mr. Akpe hinted that talks are ongoing with Spanish La Liga for a potential partnership to train local coaches in the state. The reason for the exposure is to make our coaches great gaffers in the future and as well market the brand, prosperity cup to foreign clubs.
