  • Gov Mutfwang has made huge strides in transportation sector – Plateau Commissioner Davou Gyang

Gov Mutfwang has made huge strides in transportation sector – Plateau Commissioner Davou Gyang

    By Isreal Adamu, Jos

The Commissioner for Transport in Plateau State, Hon. Davou Jatau Gyang has reiterated that the incumbent Governor of Plateau State, His Excellency Barrister Caleb M. Mutfwang has made huge strides in Transportation in Plateau State, through the Ministry of Transport, despite the challenges he met on resumption of office in 2023.

Hon. Davou Jatau Gyang, who spoke to newsmen in his office at the Plateau State Secretariat said, the Governor took major steps in transportation on his resumption, in order to help cushion and mitigate the effects of the Subsidy removal by the Federal Government and the subsequent rise in prices and fares.

He said, upon been sworn in, the Governor, through the Ministry of Transport, which he is heading as Commissioner, made up his mind that his administration must make life easy and meaningful for the people hence, “We had to roll up our sleeves to give the people of Plateau State succor”.

Hon. Davou, disclosed that “This was the reason why the Governor and his administration had to bring back the train services, introduce the Metro Buses, and also went into MoU with “Value Jet”, to provide flight services profitably and in another hand to improve on the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR)”.

Hon. Davou Jatau Gyang, in part said, “I was appointed in August 2023, by His Excellency, Governor Caleb M. Mutfwang (Esq), to head the Ministry of Transport Plateau State.

We actually came in during a challenging moment when transportation was a serious issue across the federation, with Plateau State as one of the federating unit.

“Owing to the challenges and with a plan by the Governor and the administration to make life easy and meaningful for the people, we had to roll up our sleeves to give the people of Plateau State succor.

“You would recall that we came in during the removal of subsidy by the Federal Government that led to hick in prices and fares.

“First and foremost, we thought of the railway system, we went into talks/interface with the Nigerian Railway Cooperation (NRC) to really see how best the service can provide the needed succor for the people. You know the railway system of transport has been absent from the state for decades.

“The Governor was so magnanimous as usual, he approved the revitalization of the rail services in the state, to which we have rehabilitated 35 Kilometers of rail tracks from the Railway Terminal here in Jos, to Kuru station, as well as, reworked the rolling-stocks by the NRC, what I mean by Rolling-stocks are, the Locomotives, the Couches, and the Power-cars.

All these items were initially brought in bad shapes. The efforts in this direction are all aimed with the desire to give Plateau people, some sort of succor in the area of Transportation after the removal of Subsidy.

“We brought these items to Jos, the capital of Plateau State, and gave them a suitable face lift. It is on record today the people have had a taste of train transportation again in the state.

“Notwithstanding, we had one teething problem or the other in making this system work. But now, the people are benefiting from it.

“As at last year December 2024, we recorded huge commuters daily, close to a Thousand (1000) moving between Jos City in Jos-north Local Government Area (LGA) and Bukuru Town in Jos-South LGA, and the people have been jubilating, while praising the feat achieved by the Governor in this area.

“For now, we want to tidy up the needed agreement with NRC to see how better to serve the people. You would recall that we are still running on a trial period based on our earlier agreement and NRC would come to take over.

“It is also of note that the State Government has paid every bill that arouse in course of the rail rehabilitation.

“One other thing the Ministry of Transport did under the leadership of Governor Mutfwang (Esq) immediately after assuming office, was to sign an MoU with “Value-Jet”, with the aim of returning flights to Jos Airport. Before our coming to office, we were not having flights from Jos to Abuja and Abuja to Jos. Now we have Value Jet flying Abuja-Jos rout, Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

“The first MoU was in 2023 and now we have gotten an extension for another Six (6) Months with the clear intension to develop the route till it become self-sustaining and sufficient, that they can fly in without government’s intervention.

“We are having the next round of it expiring on the 17th of February 2025, which we also desire to extend until the rout is stabilized.

“One of the ways we want to make it self-sufficient is to inform Value Jet of an opportunity they are not really exploring, which is the Lagos route, which for some time now has been left to another Airline. In our next discussion we would want them to explore this route.

“We honestly want to have fights daily from Jos to most parts of the country, without the present daily gaps. We are currently making efforts to develop routs to the South-south and South-east among many others. Ypu know many Igbo business moguls among other tribe who frequently come to Jos, like traveling by air.

“It is sad that most of them have to travel first to Abuja before linking up to their main destinations. We simply want to have a situation where they go directly from Jos Airport. There are also plans on ground on the air-lifting of pilgrims from Jos to the various religious Holy lands.

“The Governor has made very serious commitment towards the upgrade of the Jos Airport to a Cargo Airport. On this, underground works are on top gear.

“The idea is to enable the Agricultural products and produce to be taken to most parts of the globe and to encourage the state farmers to produce more, as there would be markets for their farm produce.

“Again, we are conducting enumeration to enable the state get data of certain businesses that are transport related within the state, to work hand in hand with the public transport management system, which is currently operating in the state as a pilot scheme.

This scheme helps the state to create surveillance through installed cameras. You can see how it works in our situation room within the Ministry. All vehicles that are passing through the parameters of the cameras are seen here in the Ministry.

“This is aimed at, curtailing incidences of car theft, movement of unregistered vehicles, and vehicles moving with expired documents by the State Government.

The government wants a situation where the VIO who is on the road would have flat vehicles to target, instead of stopping every vehicle on sight. Especially for the vehicles whose documents have expired that pass through the cameras, would be easily detected and notification sent to the VIO on duty.

“From our study, over 50% of vehicles plying the streets are not registered. So, this scheme will greatly improve the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of the state.

“The introduction of Metro-Buses in the state through the Plateau Express Service, is one great stride of Governor Caleb Mutfwang recoded in the Transport Ministry in the state.

The operation of the Buses allow commuters living 20 to 0 Kilometers to get to their destinations with just N200. 00. It has helped the citizens to manage the harsh economic situation and enable them to save out of the low fare charged by the buses”, he added.

  • Prospects of Trump’s Economic Policy and Global Economy

Prospects of Trump’s Economic Policy and Global Economy

    By Adefolarin A. Olamilekan

There is no doubt about what levels of economy Trump inherited from Joe Biden, the United States of America’s 46th President under the Democratic Party. Arguably, Trump inherits a strong economy. Fundamentally, the post-COVID-19 pandemic US economic recovery has been regarded to have outpaced that of other advanced economies in inflation, productivity, and growth measures.

Much more that is not to be in doubt is Trump’s also inherent troubling fiscal scheme that lies beneath this strong economy. By the side of over $36 trillion, many US economists argue is over six times its 2001 level

Conceivably is the fact that US national debt is unsustainable, the question is with the debt-to-GDP ratio poised to hit record heights under Trump’s second term.

There is fear over how President Trump is starting his second term, as there are issues with fiscal obstacles that defect or change the flight of the US economy and impact the global economy in general.

One such challenge is avoiding a government shutdown, preventing a default on US sovereign debt, and respectively connected to managing America’s ballooning national debt.

As observed by experts and analysts recently, President Trump’s failure to adequately deal with these issues could have enduring political and economic consequences.

In debate as always is that borrowing is not necessarily bad. Frankly, we see lots of expressed favour that support this gesture, pointing out that it enabled pressing government action, especially during downturns. A situation that allows borrowing and debt-financed spending on areas like infrastructure, research, and human capital can boost growth and ultimately pay for itself.

However, the current route raises serious concerns. For instance, the Trump government within a week of assuming office, signed over forty-two Presidential Executive Orders. At this, many think that the Trump administration’s policy changes could augment or relieve these pressures, although proposed solutions appear inadequate.

One such Presidential Executive Order is the ‘Department of Government Efficiency’ (DOGE).

However, analysts and fiscal experts doubt if it can help reduce national debt obligation, with the government targeting $2 trillion in savings.

Another is an Executive Order on the ‘External Revenue Service’ to collect tariffs from abroad. The aim of this order according to the Trump government, is to block leakages and shore up revenues. A measure to recover the lost tariff revenues falls under the Biden administration which is more than $4 trillion.

Analysts are already raising concerns that this could be American buyers in due course bearing the cost. With the US Inflation hovering between four percent and four percent. The worries expressed here are that this could fuel inflation and exaggerate inequality. There are indications of the tax cut from the Trump government, as did in the 2017 tax cut that favour Trump friends and business allies.

Unfortunately, one critical concern is Trump’s management of a rollover of $9 trillion of the debt year 2025, in the composition of Treasury bills, US mutual funds, and hedge funds tides to households.

Further, rising debt threatens to crowd out private investment, hampering growth, and stifling real growth of the US economy. Likewise, a heavy debt burden imposes opportunity costs, as interest payments take precedence over investments in the nation’s economic, security, and social foundations.

As argued by economists, this would drawback the US in strategic competition. First, it limits options for responding to future crises, such as the future pandemic or climate tragedy.

Secondly, the US fiscal trajectory under Trump’s administration may face difficulties, if the structured approach to contain is not charted. Lastly, is to understand that the stakes of managing the economic risks extend beyond partisan politics, as this has been demonstrated within the space of the foundations of American economic power and world policy.

Meanwhile, Trump may not be ready for the continued stimulus drive of the US macroeconomic environment, and his government must, however, be in a position to prevent the consequences. In the face of the US Federal Reserve easing, and stability that constrain future choices, with marks toward straightening the dollar strength.

Interestingly, how Trump would balance campaign promises with the reality of US economic prospects, looking at the mountain of fiscal challenges

Worries are also beyond the US border, going by some of the actions that would shape Trump’s administration’s first 100 days. Arguably, it will reverberate throughout his presidency and beyond, and the global economy will feel the impact.

For instance, some lines of issues from Trump were signed by Presidential Executives. The Withdrawing from the Paris Climate Agreement. Some analysts have now been tagged as not too good for the Americans. Another is that declaring a National Energy Emergency and easing Regulations on Oil and Gas Production is considered a threat to the global energy economy, especially crude oil prices. America, which is not a member of the Organization of Petroleum Producing Countries (OPEC), is going to pump more crude to flood the international oil market. In this case, Nigeria will suffer from crude price nose-diving significantly if it happens and the nation’s budget peg of $75 per barrel would drastically reduce targeted oil revenues of about N19 trillion.

Similarly, the fallout of Trump’s imposition of Tariffs on imports from China, Mexico, and Canada, is viewed now as another round of tax war, which if not managed properly may become a global trade tax tragedy.

In the final analysis, the Trump administration on the outside meant well for Americans, but could not love America more than those opposing him, has over twenty State Attorney Generals in the United States in court to challenge many of his passionate Presidential Executive Orders. While the global economy is intrinsically linked to the US, with the former shaping and reshaping the dynamics of the former. The pertinent question that is pumping up is how can the global economy survive the next four years, under Donald Trump’s Presidency and Economic launching. As we wait.

Doctors Protest, Demand Reinstatement Of Suspended President in Kogi

    By Noah Ocheni, Lokoja

The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), Federal Teaching Hospital Lokoja (FTHL), on Monday in Lokoja embarked on a protest to demand the immediate reinstatement of its suspended President, Dr. Jimoh Umar.

The doctors made the demand during a protest carried out against the management of the FTHL led by the Chief Medical Director (CMD), Dr Olatunde Alabi, on Monday.

The doctors demanded that the FTHL management should immediately effect the directive of the Federal Government through the Minister of Health, Prof. Ali Pate, approving the reinstatement of the suspended ARD FTHL President, Dr. Jimoh Umar.

It could be recalled that Dr. Umar was suspended for actions he carried out as a head of a union that was a collective decision of all the resident doctors of the hospital in 2024 by the management of FTHL.

Speaking to newsmen, after the protest, Dr Olushola Baoku, the immediate past Chairman of Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) Kogi, demanded for the immediate reinstatement of ARD FTHL suspended President, as directed by the Minister.

“The Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof Ali Pate through the Permanent Secretary, Ms Kachollom Shangti Daju,, has approved the reinstatement of Dr. Jimoh Umar since December 12, 2024.

“The letter got to the FTHL on January 11, 2025, but the CMD, Dr Olatunde Alabi, has deliberately refused to effect the content of the letter as directed by the Minister.

“All we are saying as doctors is that the CMD should obey the superior order according to the Section 3 of Civil Service Rule 100402 (u and aa) and 100301 (D and I) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“It says refusal to treat official file, violation of auto secrecy, act unbecoming of a public officer and insubordination, are all acts of misconduct. All these are contained in the public service rule, and all of us are under the public service rules including the CMD.

“So, if the Minister has approved a letter through the Perm. Sec., nobody under the PS from top to bottom must refuse to act. That is gross insubordination, and it is contrary and arbitrary to the renewed Hope Agent of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“We are stakeholders’ in this country and we will not allow sabotage. We are calling on the CMD to immediately release the letter that is in his custody and reinstate the ARD FTHL President, Dr Jimoh Umar.

The protesting doctors who walked round the hospital premises carring placards with various inscriptions: such as “Reinstate our President, Uphold Abuja Accord”; “Stop Killing of FTH Lokoja, Dr Alabi”; and “Enough is Enough, Reinstate our President”.

The Minister of the FCT, Barrister Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, said he will grant the request made by Maikalangu, saying the AMAC has too much capacity by undertaking numerous projects this is as the AMAC chairman name Wike “Abowoweyi” as a mark of his magical touch in infrastructural development.

Wike said Maikalangu has washed his has washed his hands very well and qualified to dine with kings, saying he deserves all the support.

He said that Dei-Dei access road will be commenced within a month and concluded before the end of the year.

The Executive Chairman of Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Hon. Christopher Zakka Maikalangu, has lauded Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Chief, Barrister Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, for the completion of the access road to Saburi 1 and 2, after its flag off in February last year.

Speaking Saturday in Abuja, during the commission of the road project, Maikalangu said that Wike is a “talk and do” minister as construction of the road started immediately after the flag off ceremony, hence the timely completion of the road project.

In the spirit of the commissioning project, Maikalangu announced that the people of Gbagyi have agreed to name the FCT minister “Wike Abowoweyi”, meaning “Wike – The Magician of our time’, in appreciation of his magical touch in the FCT.

Like Oliver Twist, Maikalangu urged Wike to look into the plight of the people of Zaudna, Kaba and Kagini, whom he said do not have a good access road.

Maikalangu revealed that the road to the aforementioned communities has been abandoned for decades and they have lost hope because it requires two bridges to be constructed first, before constructing the road.

He said: “On behalf of the people of AMAC, I have the pleasure of welcoming you to the commissioning of this beautiful Saburi access road, which you promised and delivered in record time.

“Your Excellency sir, on the day of the flag off, most people thought that it was all about politics and business as usual, but immediately you and your team left, bulldozers, caterpillars, men and materials commenced work immediately, working every day up to this moment of completion.

“In view of this achievement, the people of AMAC, whom I represent, have given you a new name in Gbagyi Language. They now call you “Wike Abowoweyi”, meaning: ‘Wike – The Magician of our time’, because indeed your gigantic strides are unmatchable. May I also thank Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, the FCT Minister of State; for her support to the Honourable Minister.

“Furthermore, Your Excellency Sir, our people have already started reaping the benefit of the smooth road network in the whole of Gwagwa Ward. This road infrastructure had boosted business and economic activities in this area and your name is on the lips of members of this community, saying it is the first time they have a Minister who cares about them this way.

“Indeed, you are God-sent to us. You are a Minister who is familiar with our people and our people are also familiar with you. In the same vein, you are the only minister who knows that those of us in the villages – also deserve the good things of life. Just as you are touching lives in the city, you are also touching us in the rural areas.

“On this note, we will continue to thank Mr. President, His Excellency Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for giving us a very dependable Transformer as the FCT Minister, and also thank him for approving and citing a Federal Polytechnic in my domain. This is a blessing that nobody in FCT will deny. Please, help us to tell Mr. President that we are supporting him to actualize his Renewed Hope Agenda in the FCT.

“Sir if you can recall, during your inspection tour to this project, the people pleaded with you – Your Excellency sir, that they needed a police station for security purposes, which you graciously approved. Currently, the project is almost completed. In addition, as I speak right now, you have also approved another construction of police station in Takushara community to tackle crime and criminal activities in that area.

“Your Excellency, the people of AMAC have also asked me to use this medium, to appreciate you for the promises fulfilled to us, such as: Rehabilitation of the Life Camp – Fish Market – Karmo – Dei–Dei Road, and to let the world know that as we speak, massive construction is ongoing on that road, which is indeed a great relief to the people of FCT Sir.

“As your son and disciple following after your footsteps, our administration is pleased to announce also that we have constructed over 40 TRUNK-C access roads, spread across the length and breath of the entire AMAC communities. Sir permit me to mention but a few:

“Orozo Community Access Road completed, Mabushi township road, Jahi Community Access Road, Gosa Access Road, Sabon Lugbe Access Road, Toge Community Access Road, Dnako Access Road, Karmo Township Road, Kugbo Township Access Road, Wumba Township Road, Dutse Access Road, Life Camp Fish Market Road, Jikwoi Phase 1 & 2, Kpegyi, amongst other projects.

“In the same vein, over 40 Solar Power Borehole constructed, 18 Primary health care centres: 18 primary schools, 2 town halls, 29 rural electrifications, numerous solar street light across our communities, youths, women and famers empowerment, construction of markets, etc.

“Therefore, Mr. Project Sir, please grant us the opportunity to come and commission some of these projects, and the invitation letter will be sent to your office soon.

“Sir, I want to specifically thank you today for the rehabilitation of Nyayati, Karu to Karshi road. And also, for the construction of Kabusa to Ketti, Kabusa to Kakushara. With all these, we say thank you Sir.

“Your excellency sir, permit me to thank the general manager of LCC company for constructing this road to its best. Because of this standard delivered, I recommend them for other road constructions in Abuja Municipal Area Council.

“Finally, Sir, as Charles Dickens will always say in his book, Oliver Twist, I need some more, I therefore crave your indulgence to inform you that the people of Zaudna, Kaba and Kagini do not have good access road. The road to these communities has been abandoned for decades and they have lost hope because it requires two bridges to be constructed first, before constructing the road. In view of this sir, I humbly solicit that you please come to their aid.

“In conclusion sir, it will interest you to know that AMAC is the biggest Area Council in FCT with larger communities and population, on this note sir, I humbly request that AMAC should be treated with enormous consideration and attention, considering its high population density and many communities therein. In view of this, sir Karshi to Kutasa is another many challenge we are facing in FCT, and it requires prayer. And I pray that God will touch you one day to remember that area.”
