  • INSPIRATION TALK WITH MARY EWA

    INSPIRATION TALK WITH MARY EWA

    Accountability.  .  .

    Are you accountable?
Do you take responsibility for the things you do or fail to do? Do you constantly blame others except yourself for everything that has ever gone wrong in your life? Do you take breaks from time to time to assess, appreciate and recollect those things you have done and choices you have made?
Being accountable is what many of us are not!
Being accountable is the reason most individuals and even some great nations, including our dear country Nigeria, are in despair.  . .
We have collectively plunged ourselves into where we are today, especially those who have the political rights to act but fail! Those who scheme only for themselves and their wellbeing, forgetting that without the platform called fatherland, upon which their ill-gotten or even right-gotten wealth and empires are established, there will be no them or wealth or empires.
We are at threshold again, the year is speedily winding up. . . Have you taken stock of your actions or inactions? Have you appraised your choices? Do you think they are inimical to others? Have you paused for a bit along the lines to see how helpful or unhelpful you have been to others? Kindness is a legacy transmissible, have you by any means taught others either through your own actions that they can be good people by being intentionally kind to others and by also taking responsibilities for their wrongs and failures? Do we have to punish others for the wrong choices we have made by our own freewill? What kind of family do we then intend to build or raise when the basic truth is denied to our wards and offsprings? What kind of nation do we hope to build when the law makers and actionable agencies do not take responsibility for their wrong doings, policies, decisions, actions or inactions? When the judiciary fails to promote justice as should be ordinarily, except that justice is now a commodity only the rich and influential can afford while the poor man rots in jail awaiting trial for crimes they never committed? Unaccountability is when fake life becomes the real life and violation of the rights of the innocent becomes a norm in the land!
Desperation has definitely become the wings on which many evils have trended, are trending and will still trend! Caution is no where to be found. This is what happens when accountability is missing in action… when caution is just a word and rewards are not properly applied or rather wrongly awarded!
We cry fowl for wrongs done by others. Have you visited your case yet? I dont think so. Is it possible we are all in this big mess we have collectively created in our various little failings? How? you may ask? Did I hear you right? Yes! The thing is, you are as wrong as the one who committed an offence or broke a law that safeguards others when you turn a blind eye to things they do, have done, are doing or will do because they are your friends, or family or loved ones or because they are your business partners and you fear losing out on a big share of loot and spoils.

Surely, the list is endless but we are not hopeless. .  . only if we are ready to turn the tables and make things right again! It’s not late to make amends, the only late will be when we refuse to do nothing about a situation that could be helped or salvaged. It’s time to choose which way to go as the year comes to an end and a new year begins. Accountability should be our guide as we take responsibility for the things we have done wrong and try to make them right again. It’s our life, it’s our family, it’s our nation, it’s our world and it’s our choice what we make of it. . .

    Remember, history never FORGETS!

  • Christmas, not complete without Christians reaching out to others, says Cleric

Christmas, not complete without Christians reaching out to others, says Cleric

    By Patrick Wemambu

Charismatic pastor, Rev. Fr. (Dr.) James Urien of the St. Paul’s Chaplaincy, Delta State University (DELSU) Abraka, Delta State has explained that Christmas is not complete without Christians reaching out to as many people as they could possibly encounter in every day life.

He stated this Sunday while celebrating Mass in his Chaplaincy. When God visits Christians at yuletide, they are blessed with the gift of joy which is transformative – the priest affirmed. He, therefore, directed those concerned who experience the bubble of happiness to endeavour to share it with others.

Hear him; “Christmas will not be complete without our reaching out to others. Usually, we reach out to/visit relatives and friends but we can visit those who are not expecting visitations like those in the hospitals, jails, orphanages, poor families etc. This is a visitation that enables us to bring joy to others. We receive by giving. One of the ways of giving is visitations.
John (the Baptist) was still in the womb when Jesus visited. He was excited and acknowledged Jesus’ presence. How excited are we about God’s visitation this Christmas?”

Elucidating further, the chaplain noted that people love pleasant surprises which create the impression that they are loved. These also give a great sense of joy beyond the expression of words. Most of the time, the speaker continued, such surprises come to us when we least expect them. Individuals were, thus, charged to organise some surprises for their families and loved ones this Christmas as charity begins at home.

Urging believers to strive towards making others feel important even if they have little to offer in return – the sermonist disclosed that simple greetings could go a long way in making someone’s day. Imagining the excitement from the visitation of Mary to Elizabeth as John leapt for joy in the womb, the clergyman inquired from his audience what visitation from them might cause such excitement for others. Give someone a pleasant surprise for Christmas, he pleaded.

Fr. Urien spoke on the theme of divine promises; “The blessings we enjoy include life, health, upliftment, security, prosperity etc. We are favoured by God. Most of these favours are undeserved. Although Bethlehem was the least of the tribe of Judah, something good emerged from her. Jesus was born in a poor hovel in Bethlehem. God chooses the humble and works in unexpected ways.
Mary is from a poor family. However, she was the one chosen by God to conceive and give birth to the saviour of the world. It shows there is no place too small, too dark, too lonely, too high that God can not visit. God will surprise you.”

Gospelizing on the essence of being aware of God’s presence, the parishioners of St. Paul’s Chaplaincy were informed that even John (the Baptist) in the womb and Elizabeth acknowledged God’s presence. The members would do well, thus, to do the same. Just as it is important for Christians not only to be aware of God’s presence but to be willing to relate and have an encounter with Him, the preacher observed that too often believers hardly acknowledge the Creator much less respect His presence.

Alluding to the behaviour of a few people at Mass – without reverence – Fr. Urien regretted that there are worshippers who show more respect to important personalities than to God. They were advised to desist from such an act while carrying the presence of God with them in relating with others.

The man of God went on to invite the church to be missionaries; “Mary was a missionary and carried Jesus in her womb and brought blessings to Elizabeth. How do we carry Christ to others like Mary? As communicants, we receive the Holy Eucharist but are we able to bring that presence to others after the Mass? Are we also open to acknowledging God’s presence through the power of the Holy Spirit? Let us proclaim the Goodnews of God’s kingdom.
Sometimes, we feel too small and believe our impact will not be significant in the mission of saving souls.”

Bethlehem may be small but there is a mission to accomplish, Fr. Urien reiterated – warning that Christ is the highest gift we can give to those we love. Let us, therefore, bring the joy of Christmas and God’s presence to others through little gestures of love, kindness, generosity, simplicity, smile, etc, the priest concluded.

  • Why Mary is Ark of the New Covenant, Reverend Father asserts

Why Mary is Ark of the New Covenant, Reverend Father asserts

    By Patrick Wemambu

“Today, we turn our attention to the Blessed Virgin Mary. She is the Ark of the New Covenant. Why? We remember her great and humble role at Christmas. Why are we shifting our attention to Mary? The celebration of every child is first and foremost the celebration of the mother…Mothers play a special role in conceiving and birthing children. If we claim to love the baby Jesus, we must also appreciate his mother.”

Rev. Fr. Leonard Okoli, Parish priest of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Umuochi-Utchi, Warri Diocese in Delta State made those remarks while delivering the homily to his parishioners Sunday.

Sermonizing on the topic Why Mary is the Ark of the New Covenant, the priest likened the subject to the relationship between a fruit and a tree. Nobody could cherish the former, he advanced, without acceptance of the latter that bore it. How is Mary the Ark of the New Covenant? The homilist inquired.

Quoting John 1:14 which states that Jesus assumed humanity and dwelt among mankind, the church administrator maintained that the flesh was taken from Mary. And not from heaven, any Angel or principality. Just as God provided a structure (the Ark) for the Law of the Old Covenant (Torah), the congregation realized that the Creator also made available a body (Ark) which is Mary for Jesus Christ (the New Covenant).

“Let us use two scriptural passages to show that Mary is the Ark of the New Covenant namely 2 Samuel 6: 9-15 and Luke 1:39-44. 2 Samuel 6: 9-15 tells the story of how the Ark of the Covenant was brought back to Israel while Luke 1:39-44 tells the story of Mary’s visit to Elizabeth. These two passages show 3 similarities. First, David was overwhelmed with the presence of the Ark that he exclaimed; ‘how can the ark of the Lord come to me?’ (2 Sam. 6:9),” Fr. Okoli throwing more light on the issue expressed.

He continued; “Elizabeth repeated it saying; ‘how should it be that the mother of my Lord should come to me?’ (Luke 1:43). Second, when the Ark came to the city of David, David leapt for joy (1 Sam 6:14). Elizabeth also confirmed; ‘when the sound of your greetings reached my ear, the child in my womb leapt for joy’ (Luke 1:41). Third, the Ark stayed in the house of Obededom for three months (1 Sam 6:11) just as Mary stayed with Elizabeth for three months (Luke 1:56).”

On the lessons to be learnt from the figure of Mary as the Ark of the Covenant, the homilist declared that she is a powerful intercessor for us whenever we are in need of God’s blessings and protection. While we are implored to remember her intercession at the wedding feast at Cana (John 2:1-11), we are similarly enjoined to appreciate and honour her like Elizabeth did. Another way of honouring the mother of God is to be filled with joy whenever we encounter her like Elizabeth was – the Holy Trinitarians were told.

The preacher offered an important addendum; “Pray the Rosary as often as you can. It is not a worship of Mary, but a honour given to her. Just as the Ark of the Covenant contained the Word of God – the Ten Commandments inscribed on two tablets – Mary carried Jesus, the Word of God made flesh in her. If we want the Word of God to come to fulfillment in our lives, we should be close to Mary.”

  • Is Nigeria Into Renewed Scam?

    Is Nigeria Into Renewed Scam?

    By Deen Adavize

When some patriotic Nigerians, including yours truly, rose in 2023 to defend and promote a man they believed would usher in a new era of good governance, restore national dignity, and unite the country with inclusive policies, they acted in the hope of salvaging the nation from decades of systemic leadership failure and pervasive poverty. The movement was fueled by a shared yearning for informed and transformative leadership that would not only bring prosperity, equity, and justice for all Nigerians but restore the battered social trust in governance.

Un-known to them, their burning quest to return the country to a glorious era blinded them to the true capacity, integrity, and mission of the individual they marketed to the masses. This grave misunderstanding led to a catastrophic miscalculation, plunging the nation into an unimaginable mess. The hope of a new dawn was dashed, no thanks to the Lagos headmaster’s misguided policies, which continue to reverberate across every facet of national life.

Since his swearing-in in May 2023, the country has not, for a single moment, breathed the fresh air symbolizing the so-called ‘renewed hope’ promised to Nigerians. Instead, his policies, actions, and inactions have suffocated the masses, driving them to the brink of despair. This reflects a stark disconnect between existential realities and the policies churned out thus far. The failure to promptly address critical issues affecting the populace, ranging from inflation to unemployment and general economic hardship, has left the masses drowning in a sea of hopelessness. Basic necessities such as food, medication, and transportation have become unaffordable for the average Nigerian, leaving the larger population on the brink of destitution—a global hallmark of a failed state.

While the administration continues to offer excuses for its acute leadership failure, available evidence suggests that the main reasons behind the regime’s progressive mess are a lack of preparedness for governance and a poor understanding of the country’s existential challenges. Ironically, this is striking for a man who had been within the corridors of power for over two decades and boasted of being one of the most informed leaders of our time, yet surprisingly appears uninformed about addressing the country’s challenges after ascending to lead Africa’s most populous country.

Recently, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, which had previously encouraged the current administration to push on with subsidy removal and currency devaluation, acknowledged the doldrums resulting from these policies. The IMF specifically described the administration’s reforms as ‘not working,’ underscoring the depth of the crisis. This acknowledgment, coming from global financial institutions that are often reluctant to criticize governments publicly, highlights the magnitude of the current leadership failure.

It is baffling that a man who claimed to have inherited a collapsing economy with dwindling revenue would hastily set up the most expansive and extravagant cabinet in Nigeria’s history. In August, over ₦150 billion was reportedly spent to purchase a new presidential jet at a time when Nigerians were grappling with economic hardship and a high cost of living crisis. These moves, among others, not only contradict his rhetoric of fiscal prudence but also place an additional burden on the masses, who are now wallowing in extreme poverty. The disparity between leadership rhetoric and reality becomes more glaring as the government’s priorities seem skewed toward self-enrichment rather than public service.

Nearly two years into the regime, none of his policies have mitigated the disastrous effects of fuel subsidy removal and currency devaluation—policies that have catapulted the nation’s inflation rate to an all-time high, eroded the purchasing power of ordinary citizens, and impoverished millions of Nigerians. Every sluggishly implemented mitigating measure appears more like a scam, leaving the country teetering on the edge of economic collapse.

It is incontrovertible that economic reforms that have rendered over half of the country’s population destitute, driven thousands of multinational companies away, shut down thousands of local manufacturers, sacrificed 90% of the currency’s value, and degraded Nigeria’s economic standing on the global stage are nothing short of disastrous. These reforms, far from benefiting the masses, seem to serve the political elite exclusively, earning them the dubious distinction of being the scam of the century. The aftermath of these policies is visible in the growing number of unemployed youths, shuttered businesses, and the erosion of social trust in governance.

For those who still harbour hope for positive outcomes from the current administration, the question remains: how much longer can the nation endure these self-inflicted wounds? The evidence of policy failure is glaringly overwhelming, and the ripple effects are spreading far and wide.

Just a few days ago, several people, mostly children, lost their lives while searching for food for survival in three states, including the FCT. A few months earlier, some underage children who were forced onto the streets to protest against unbearable hunger and economic hardship were brutally arrested and subjected to inhumane treatment in detention by security agents. Their haggard footage in a courtroom, which later attracted global outrage, exposed the administration’s numbness. As a matter of fact, these embarrassing scenarios are unprecedented in the country’s history, not even under military rule.

It is becoming increasingly clear that the promised ‘renewed hope’ is a facade, masking a reality of incompetence and mismanagement. The disconnect between policy formulation and execution speaks volumes about the leadership’s lack of understanding of the socio-economic realities on the ground.

As Nigerians desperately yearn for a change in leadership, it must be recognized that neither Atiku nor Peter Obi possesses a silver bullet to solve the country’s socio-economic woes. Both figures come with their baggage and limitations, making them less-than-ideal saviors. However, to urgently safeguard the nation from being completely debased beyond repair by the current administration, anything other than the Lagos headmaster should be considered. The urgent task is to halt the downward spiral and chart a new course for national recovery.

The path forward requires more than just a change in leadership. It calls for a paradigm shift in governance, where policies are people-centered and driven by data and evidence. Nigeria’s challenges are multifaceted, ranging from economic restructuring to social cohesion and institutional reform. Addressing these issues demands leadership that is not only competent but also compassionate and inclusive.

The current administration’s failures should serve as a wake-up call for all Nigerians. It is a reminder that leadership goes beyond rhetoric and promises; it requires a deep understanding of the nation’s complexities and a genuine commitment to service. As the nation grapples with the consequences of poor leadership and bad policies, the call for accountability grows louder. Nigerians must demand better and refuse to settle for mediocrity in governance.

The journey ahead is daunting but not insurmountable. With the right leadership and collective effort, Nigeria can overcome its current challenges and emerge stronger. The lessons of the past two years must not be forgotten; they should guide the nation in making better choices for its future. The time to act is now, before the scars of today become the permanent wounds of tomorrow.
