Hours after Niger Students Abduction, NSCDC Mulls Deploying Personnel Across Schools

The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) on Wednesday announced that it would deploy men and equipment into designated schools across the country to curtail the spate of attacks and kidnapping of students.

Acting Commandant General, (ACG) Hillary Kelechi Madu who made the announcement, expressed sadness over the kidnap of students of Government Secondary school, Kagara, Niger State, by suspected bandits.

He said he called the meeting of states and zonal commanders of the Corps in Abuja against the backdrop of deplorable security situations across the country and the urgent need for the Corps to play its expected roles to justify its funding by the government.

“We must play our roles to justify the huge funding of this institution by the government. And there is no better time to do this than now. In the past we focused on arresting pipeline vandals and other sabotuers.

“But now, the security situation in the country is a pointer for us to show our relevance by acting decisively to restore peace and orderliness, “Madu asserted.

The ACG who addressed reporters shortly after the opening ceremony of the meeting with the senior officers of the Corps, noted that the Commander of the NSCDC in Niger state could not make it to the meeting because of the kidnapping of the students and the search for their rescue by all Security institutions.

Madu said all the 12 security institutions in the country should accept blame for the deplorable security challenges even though they are doing their best, stressing that until such a time peace and orderliness return to all parts of the country, their jobs are yet to receive

War is coming in Nigeria – Primate Ayodele warns Buhari

The leader of INRI Evangelical spiritual church, Primate Elijah Ayodele has warned President Muhammadu Buhari to seek divine help to end insecurity in the country or Nigeria will go into another civil war.

In a statement on Wednesday, the prophet revealed that Nigeria is sitting on a time bomb as regards security, there is no safe place for anyone.

“President Buhari has failed Nigerians in terms of security, the president is incapable in terms of security, even the rich are affected and these are the things that will ruin APC to the last.

“Buhari should seek divine ways of handling security so that it will not lead to war and ethnicity crisis.

Speaking further, Ayodele described the membership registration of the All Progressives Congress, APC as unnecessary because the country is currently facing lots of crises that need more urgent attention.

“The APC membership registration is not necessary, it makes no point, people are dying every day, they just kidnapped students in Niger, this whole thing is in the north. The north is killing themselves.

“Everywhere is polluted, we have bandits everywhere, Southwest and South-South must defend themselves now.

“I said in my 2021 prophecy that bandits will start attacking churches and mosques.

“Churches and mosques must defend themselves through serious fasting and prayers for the insecurity in our country.

“This insecurity will cause ethnic crisis and if care isn’t taken, it will cause a religious crisis.

“Everywhere is tensed, Let us restrategize, this thing will sack the Government of Buhari if care isn’t taken”

“Furthermore, Primate Ayodele revealed that he foresees serial death in the country.

“I foresee there will be serial deaths that will shock the country as a result of Banditry apart from kidnappings”

Traders destroy Niger deputy governor’s house over demolition of their shops

Ayinde Minna Residents of Brighter Road in Minna Niger State were thrown into confusion on Tuesday morning as irate youths who joined traders shopping in the area’s mini-market destroyed the private residence of the Niger State Deputy Governor in Minna, the Niger State capital.

The incident, according to a source, happened around 11.00am when the youths and the traders whose shops were demolished by the Urban Development Board unleashed their anger on the deputy governor’s house.

A source who craved anonymity told this medium that the marketers alleged that they were not given any quit notice by anybody but only to saw caterpillars demolishing people’s shops without allowing them to pack their goods and valuables that were inside.

The source also noted that the traders who demanded justice and equity also demanded the demolition of the house of the deputy governor as it is in the same place with the shops marked for demolition.

The source revealed that the traders lost millions of naira to the demolition as they could not pick even a pin from the site.

One of the shop owners, Mallam Muritala, lamented that the state government has brought him down totally, adding that they never gave him any noticed.

He said they came early yesterday morning and asked him to come out of the shop before they started demolishing it without even allowing him to pack his cash, goods and valuables.

He said, “I was just sitting in my shop and they said come out – their bulldozer was stationed in front of my shop – and immediately they brought me out forcefully. They brought down my entire shop without allowing me to pack my cash, goods and even other valuables. They have taken me back to zero levels, I’m left with nothing.”

Another trader whose shop was also demolished, Moses Dunia, accused the Niger State government of being power drunken for protecting the house of the deputy governor while making life hard for the common man in the area.

While reacting to the incident, the acting general manager of Urban Development Board described the allegation as baseless, adding that all the illegal structures in the area were duly served with notification of the demolition of illegal structures in the state.

  • Swiss Newspapers Call New WTO DG ’66-Year-Old Grandmother’

Swiss Newspapers Call New WTO DG ’66-Year-Old Grandmother’

You could graduate from Harvard University or bag a Ph.D. from MIT, and rise to become the managing director of the World Bank who wins the heart of 164 countries to be voted WTO DG and still be primarily described as a “66-year-old Nigerian grandmother”.

At least three Swiss newspapers — Luzerner Zeitung, Aargauer Zeitung and St. Galler Tagblatt — have all primarily described Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the recently-elected director-general of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), as a 66-year-old Nigerian grandmother.

While Okonjo-Iweala is indeed a grandmother and a 66-year-old, describing her as such after such a major appointment has led to a heavy backlash on and off social media.

The reportage from this section of the Swiss media has been referred to as an expression of racism and gender discrimination.

“This Grandmother will become the new boss of WTO,” the headline of a report by Luzerner Zeitung read, announcing Okonjo-Iweala’s selection as the director-general.

The article was published in the online and hardcopy version of the newspaper. But following the backlash on social media, the online version of the article was edited to read “This 66-year-old Nigerian will head WTO”.

Linda Klare-Repnik, the coordinator environmental and social management system, at the International Union for Conservation of Nature, called the newspaper out on Linkedin.

“Gender discrimination and racism: Swiss newspaper headlines the nomination of Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala for WTO Director General as ‘This Grandmother will become the new boss of WTO,” she wrote.

“If it had been a white man, the title would have been along the lines of ‘Harvard Economist, ex-World Bank Managing Director and ex Minister of Finance …’

Nadja Schnetzler, who co-founded a Swiss magazine called Republik, asked how the reporter would have written the election of Joe Biden as American president.

“What would you think if you wrote about Biden ‘this grandfather will be US President’?” she tweeted.

Aargauer Zeitung, which also published the same article written by Jan Dirk Herbermann, apologised for the “wrong” reportage.

“Nigerian Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala is the first woman to head the World Trade Organization. We presented the 66-year-old economist and former World Bank deputy head in a portrait and focused on her role as a grandmother in the title. That was wrong,” the newspaper tweeted, after the backlash.

“Okonjo-Iweala is much more than that. For example, Harvard economist, as you can read in our text,” the newspaper added, sharing an updated version of the article.

A Ugandan-born academic and development economist in Germany highlighted that the same media would refer to Angela Merkel, who is also 66 as mother, but refer to Okonjo-Iweala as a grandmother.

Okonjo-Iweala has a Bachelor’s in economics from Harvard University and a Ph.D. in regional economics and development from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). She also holds honourary degrees from over a dozen universities globally.

She was a two-time minister of finance in Nigeria and minister of foreign affairs. She is the first female to take up both jobs.

She is a board member at Twitter, Standard Chartered Bank, and African Risk Capacity. The 66-year-old was up till February 2021, the co-chair of the Global Commission for the Economy and Climate.

She is a member Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) international advisory board; IMF external advisory board; and AU special envoy.

She won the global finance minister of the year 2005 by Euromoney. She was one of the top 100 most influential people in the World for 2014 by TIME Magazine.

She was also one of the top 100 global thinkers for 2011 and 2012 by Foreign Policy.

The top 100 most powerful women in the world by Forbes Magazine would not have been complete in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 without her name.

She holds some of the highest national honours from Nigeria, Liberia, and Cote d’Ivoire.

Senate To Regulate Bleaching Cream And Cosmetics

The Senate on Tuesday mandated it Committee on Health to investigate the procedures for certification on quality and safety of Cosmetics and propose a way forward for accountability.

The upper chamber also directed the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to rise up to its duty of regulating importation, formulation and sale of cosmetics within Nigeria.

It further directed NAFDAC to maintain a products database, showing name and address of manufacturers and ingredients list.

The upper chamber mandated NAFDAC to embark on sensitization and awareness campaign on the ills of harmful substances in the country.

It also directed NAFDAC and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Council (FCCPC) to collaborate towards ensuring the tracking of Consumer injury.

These resolutions of the Senate followed the adoption, by the Senate, of the prayers in a motion titled: “Need for the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control to move swiftly to regulate formulation and distribution of cosmetics.”

The motion was sponsored by Senator Oluremi Tinubu (Lagos Central).

Senator Tinubu in her lead debate urged his colleagues to note the proliferation of small and medium enterprises and businesses “whose stock in trade is the formulation of beauty products ranging from lotions to Oils, scrubs and soaps, with many labelled handmade, natural and/or organic.”

She observed that that the use of natural plants for beauty and medicinal purposes is as old as humanity.

She added: “Aware that organic products in modern formulations have gained renewed popularity as a result of concerns about synthetic ingredients and chemicals, and Nigeria is no exception.

“Worried that these products often contain the words glowing, lightening, whitening, half-cast, etc, while indicating no list of ingredients to enlighten users as to its content.

“Also worried that contrary to best practices, these products often do not provide a best before date.

“Concerned that the market for cosmetics is huge, with women appearing to be the primary target.

“Further concerned that it is not unusual to see some of these products exclusively marketed for use by babies and children.

“Worried that it is impossible to determine that hygiene, quality assurance and good manufacturing practices are adhered to in the formulation of these products.

“Aware that a substantial part of the problem is the absence of standards that these products must meet before they are made available to the public.

“Reminded that in advanced countries, persons licensed to deal with skin issues and concerns, Dermatologists and Aestheticians, receive training and certification.

“Also reminded that in advanced countries, products must pass a toxicology test and be substantiated for safety before they go on sale.

“Reminded that the skin is the largest organ of the human body with over twenty physiological functions, capable of absorbing products applied.

“Further reminded that the various studies have shown that depending on ingredients, a substantial amount of products applied topically to skin are absorbed into the bloodstream.

“Notes that side effects of these harmful substances may include skin damage, kidney failure, liver failure, breathing problems, poor wound healing, scars and skin cancer amongst others.

Received with shock, video circulating in December 2019 of a woman who was supposedly having the top layer of her skin peeled off in what appeared to be a Skin Lightening procedure at the business place of a cosmetics formulator/vendor.

“Posits that unless the market is regulated and world standards for toxicity and safety adhered to, we will be putting a lot of the citizens at risk while certain elements profit.

“Reminded that the regulation of any sector, for the protection of its people is a duty of Government.”

Senators in their contributions supported the motion.

  • Tension in PDP as NWC considers sack of Secondus as national chairman

Tension in PDP as NWC considers sack of Secondus as national chairman

Members of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are plotting the removal of National Chairman Uche Secondus owing to lack of confidence in his ability to lead the party to victory in 2023, The Nation has learnt.

The plot gathered steam on Tuesday during a meeting of the PDP NWC. Sources at the meeting said many of the NWC members, during the tension-soaked meeting pushed for removal of Secondus, who has been having a running battle to remain in office.

A very reliable source at the meeting disclosed that the NWC members were unhappy with Secondus’ handling of issues in the party, which they said has not made the party play its role as a viable alternative or opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

It was gathered NWC members amongst other issues accused Secondus of not providing effective leadership to enable the party take advantage of what they consider as the poor leadership style of the APC to convince Nigerians to do away with the ruling party in 2023.

“Many of the NWC members are unhappy with him (Secondus). He has not lived up to expectations. And we’re afraid that our great party would not make the expected impact in 2023 if we retain Secondus as national chairman”, the source who did not want to be named told The Nation.

He stated that issues of financial impropriety and mismanagement were also raised against the chairman, whom he claimed had a hard time defending himself.

“There were also allegations of financial mismanagement brought against him. And we needed explanations, which we are yet to receive. There was so much tension, and it was clear many stakeholders in the party wanted Secondus out.

“He has been unable to manage the simmering crisis in the party, some chapters in the north are barely hanging on by a thread. Even in the south west, some prominent members are at war with each other, and the only reason the party has not imploded there is because of their strong faith in the party.

“Secondus has also failed to manage the situation. We think he just has to leave so we can reposition the party for 2023,” the highly placed source revealed.
He further revealed that a number of the party’s national executives also offered to resign from their positions so as not to be dragged down with the embattled national chairman.

Secondus may have incurred the wrath of the NWC members when he unilaterally lifted a suspension placed on some lawmakers at the House of Representatives under the party’s platform who had been sanctioned for the role they played in the emergence of Femi Gbajabiamila as Speaker of the lower chamber as well as other minority officials.

The opposition PDP had nominated Kingsley Chinda for the position of minority leader and Chukwuka Onyema as Deputy Minority Leader. Yakubu Barde was nominated as Minority Whip and Muraina Ajibola as Deputy Minority Whip by the PDP.

But in what was viewed as a betrayal, some members of the PDP backed Speaker Gbajabiamila to reject the PDP nominees and instead endorsed the emergence of Ndudi Elumelu and Toby Okechukwu as Minority and Deputy Minority leaders respectively. Gideon Gwani was picked as Minority Whip and Adesegun Adekoya as Deputy Minority Whip.

The action made the PDP slam suspension on Elumelu, Wole Oke, Lynda Ikpeazu, Anayo Edwin, Gideon Gwadi, Toby Okechukwu and Adekoya Abdul-Majid, a move that was reversed by Secondus without the approval of the NWC.

Secondus’ situation is said to be more precarious as he is not in the good books of the Rivers Governor, Nyesome Wike who is regarded as a kingmaker in the party.

The NWC Tuesday meeting, which was reportedly extended due to the heated debates around the removal of Secondus, came to an inconclusive end with the officials trying to calm tempers, as stakeholders kept insisting that Secondus must go, a situation that was said to have split the NWC.

  • Lai Mohammed under fire for using FG’s handle to tweet on APC crisis

Lai Mohammed under fire for using FG’s handle to tweet on APC crisis

Some Nigerians on social media have berated the Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, for using the verified Twitter handle of the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture to discuss the controversies surrounding the ongoing membership registration of the All Progressives Congress.

The minister had used the official Twitter handle of the federal ministry to state his position on the party’s registration on Monday.

In a thread, the minister demanded that the party’s registration should be cancelled in Kwara State, where he hails from.

There is a leadership crisis in Kwara APC, with Lai Mohammad leading one of the factions against the governor, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq.

Reacting to the tweet, some Nigerians accused Lai Mohammed of ridiculing the country, asking that he should be punished by the President Muhammadu Buhari

They lamented that the information on the federal ministry’s handle should represent what the country stands for.

“This is embarrassing. Lai Mohammed should be sacked immediately,” one of the Nigerians, @Abu Ayman posted.

Another Nigerian, @henryshield, tweeted, “How do you use the verified handle of a Federal Ministry to discuss the internal wrangling of the APC in Kwara State? What kind of people did we hand over Nigeria to?

“Let me get it right; a verified handle of govt is discussing party registration in Oro? Is the Ministry the media department of APC or a Federal Ministry for Nigeria? Who’s in charge of this country?”

“We entered one chance since 2015, no be today the madness started, them just dey remove clothe now ni,” @Abike90458044 tweeted.

@estudekay regretted that “We were looking for a change, we found it in a hopeless place.”

“What’s the legislative arm of government doing about the excesses of the current administration> I don’t even want to talk about the main opposition party,” Iyk Greens @IykPutin added.

Miyamoto Musashi lambasted the minister, saying, “Jauntily dancing naked in the market square. Flagrant and outright misuse of a federal ministry, converting it to the media arm of a disgruntled faction of a political party. We haven’t seen anything yet.”

Mike Chijioke wrote, “I wonder how we got here, these people lack the foresight to see the situation this country is in now – no light, no good road, no job, no quality education, etc. And somebody is using the official handle of the country to push for local politics.”

@realAyoBarth said, “Why do you seem surprised? The only time I am surprised is when the government does the right thing. This government abuses everything.”

@obunikechineke added, “Have you forgotten the Attorney General of the Federation being used for APC function? Or the State House (Aso Villa) hall being used for APC meeting?

@AbiriJoseph1 demanded that “the person handling the Twitter handle for the ministry should be sacked, this is a disgrace to Nigeria. Turning national agency and ministry official Twitter page to local gist and rival politics in APC.”

@Lotanna04161722 said, “Nothing should surprise you with this APC leaders. People that appointed dead people, what else should surprise you?”
