17-Year-Old Edo Boy Dies In Edo As Locally-Made Gun In His Pocket Blows Off His Testicles

Pandemonium rocked Ayen, a small community in Uhunmwode local government area of Edo state, last weekend, when a locally-made gun carried by a 17-year-old boy accidentally exploded, and its bullet chopped off his testicle.

The boy simply identified as Osaro, allegedly hid the gun in one of the pockets of his trousers, before it went off as he was walking.

The bullet was said to have ripped off his testicles and he died before help could come his way.

Eyewitnesses said no one knew how the gun fired because the victim was alone when the incident happened.

The development caused confusion in the community.

It was gathered that youths in the community freely carry arms around, following reported clashes between Ayen and the neighbouring Owegie community over land dispute.

The dispute reportedly started when Ayen community allegedly sold some plots of land in Owegie community and the youths of Owegie mobilised to the site to recover the property and in the process, clashed with the youths of Ayen community.

The town hall of Owegie community was thereafter allegedly set on fire by suspected gunmen.

When contacted, the Edo state spokesman, SP Chidi Nwanbuzor, said he was not aware of the incident.

Fulani Kidnappers use Generators, Play Music Inside The Forest-Ondo

A farmer in Ijugbere axis of Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State who identified himself as Adedayo says Fulani herdsmen kidnapping in the area have generators and play music inside the forest where they hide their hostages.

Speaking to Reporters on Monday, Adedayo condemned the killing of three farmers in the area during the weekend.

He said the herdsmen invaded their farm around 7 pm on Saturday and descended on the farmers, killing three while he and others ran away from the farm.

The farmer said the incident had created tension in the area with some residents fleeing the community.

He said, “When they kidnap, they bring people to the forest. Now, they have generators, play music in the forest. We are in a serious problem.

“People should take away politics from what is happening currently, they should just forget about politics, otherwise, we are in for serious trouble if nothing is done.”

Last month, Rotimi Akeredolu, governor of the state, issued a seven-day quit notice to the herdsmen operating illegally in the state’s forest reserves.

Apart from ejecting the herdsmen, the governor also banned underage grazing, night grazing, and movement of cattle within the cities and on highways.

The governor had said, “Today, we have taken major steps at addressing the root cause of kidnapping, in particular, and other nefarious activities detailed and documented in security reports, the press, and debriefings from victims of kidnap cases in Ondo State.

“As the chief law and security officer of the state, it is my constitutional obligation to do everything lawful to protect the lives and property of all residents of the state. In light of the foregoing, the following orders are hereby issued: All forest reserves in the state are to be vacated by herdsmen within the next seven days with effect from today, Monday, January 18, 2021.”

The issue generated an uproar and after a meeting with different stakeholders, Akeredolu asked herdsmen to register with the government so that they can operate unhindered in the forest reserves

  • Northerners evacuating Ibadan In Droves – Shasa Crisis

Northerners evacuating Ibadan In Droves – Shasa Crisis

Hundreds of Hausa people living in Oyo State are relocating to the North in the aftermath of last week’s crisis in the Shasa area and environs in Ibadan

Some of the northerners who left the crisis-prone areas between Friday and Saturday said they paid security operatives between N5,000 and N10, 000 to escort them to safer locations, including the residence of Sarkin Sasa, Alhaji Haruna Maiyasin.

One of the victims said they had to pay the money so that they would not be lynched.

Recall that a fight that ensued between the Hausa community and the native Yoruba community in Shasa Market, which started on Thursday, February 11, and snowballed on Friday, February 12, had led to the death of nearly 30 people.

The Sasha Market with shops belonging to the Hausa and Yoruba, vehicles and many residential houses were burnt during the crisis.

Even though peace has reportedly been restored in Shasa and environs following the deployment of security agents, leaders of the Hausa community and some displaced residents said many of them including women and children have started coming back to the North.

Some of the victims said they had to leave Ibadan for the North because they lost all their belongings, including shops and houses, and there was no support from the government at the state and federal levels.

Daily Trust learnt that besides many of the northerners that left for Kano, Sokoto, Kebbi, Kaduna, Jigawa and other states, about 500 are currently taking refuge at Akinyele’s Main Garage. The head of the garage, Alhaji Yaro Abubakar, told our reporter that the youths have been there since Friday and most of them trekked from Shasa Market and adjoining quarters.

“Some of us received monetary donations from our fellow Hausa community leaders to go back to our respective states in the North,” one of the displaced persons said.

He said they lost their belongings during Friday’s crisis. “And that is why we are going back to the North. We are lucky to be alive,” he said.

A wealthy individual, one Alhaji Nasiru Muhammad Naharande (Youth Leader of the Hausa community in Ibadan), is providing three square meals to the victims at the garage. Other well to do individuals were also assisting the displaced.

Most of the IDPs interviewed vowed not to return to the Shasa Market until the government took decisive measures in protecting their lives and property.

The Magajin Gari Hausawa of Ibadan Land, Alhaji Usman Garba, confirmed on Monday that some members of the Hausa Community were going back to the North in droves.

According to him, “We have not seen any government intervention agency or NGO to attend to our humanitarian needs. Our people are joining trailers and buses back to the North. They are returning to the North not because they asked them to go but because many of them have lost their belongings to the crisis.”

Asked about the security situation in Shasa, he said, “Our people are impressed because the police, DSS, Army, civil defence and men of Amotekun are here. They check people moving in and out of Shasa.”

The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Southeast zone, has expressed its readiness to support the authorities to go after criminals and rid the forests and cities of such bad elements in order to make life better for everyone.

Its chairman, Alhaji Gidado Siddiki, stated this on Monday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu.

He reiterated the MACBAN’s commitment to ensuring a peaceful coexistence between its members and their host communities.

He said that as a trade group, no member of the association would willingly do anything to jeopardise the peaceful coexistence of Nigeria.

“As Nigerians, we should focus of those positive ideals that are mutually beneficial to all,” Siddiki said.

Siddiki said that members of the association had a good relationship with the people of the area in spite of some isolated cases of misunderstanding.

He said that their interest in the area was purely economic, adding that no herder is interested in contesting for the ownership of land with members of their host communities.

On the issue of insecurity, Siddiki commended state governments in the Southeast for securing the area against banditry.

He said that there was no denying the fact that governments at all levels had put much efforts into finding solution to the challenge in parts of the country.

He, however, said that much still needed to be done to ensure that law abiding citizens, including herders, were free to carry out their businesses without encumbrances.

According to him, the time for Nigerians to unite and seek avenues to douse the raging tension and insecurity in parts of the country is now.

He said that as cattle breeders, “We only ask for a secure environment to do our business.

APC must be mature in nominating presidential candidate for 2023 – Osun Speaker

The Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Timothy Owoeye has urged the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to be mature in picking its flagbearer for the 2023 presidential election

The lawmaker recalled that the euphoria which greeted the formation of the APC in 2013 was one of hope and greatness for Nigeria.

The Speaker who compared the merger of the ACN, CPC, ANPP and the eventual fusion of the nPDP to that of corporate conglomerates in the business world, reiterated that the coming together was as a result of a series of round table discussions where agreements were made and interests protected.

In his words, “I have studied the undercurrent for the 2023 elections and the position of the National Executives, I charge the party to imbue the spirit of maturity we had in 2013, agree and decide on who the drivers of our vehicle will be.

  • Buhari’s Failure To Check Killer Herdsmen Has Condemne Fulani People – Moghalu

Buhari’s Failure To Check Killer Herdsmen Has Condemne Fulani People – Moghalu

Presidential candidate of the Young Democratic Party (YDP), Kingsley Moghalu, has warned President Muhammadu Buhari of the grave consequences of his government’s failure to stop the impunity of killer herdsmen and bandits in Nigeria.

He said the problem could escalate into an ethnic crisis if not properly addressed.

In a statement issued on Monday, Moghalu also condemned the recent killing northerners in Oyo State, saying, “The failure of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to end the menace of criminal herdsmen and bandits throughout Nigeria (in both northern and southern states) has led to the stigmatisation of the Fulani and other ethnic groups for the crimes of a few.

“The failure of our authorities to deploy effective security and law enforcement action against these criminals has also created a dangerous vacuum that is increasingly filled, unsurprisingly, by self-defence measures by several communities across the country.

“This could lead to reprisals based on ethnic profiling. In this context, I deplore the recent killings of innocent Nigerians of Northern extraction in Oyo State.

“As a Nigerian who has played a role in international efforts to rebuild several failed states after destructive internal conflicts including Rwanda after the genocide in 1994, I know firsthand where such trends can lead. I call upon President Muhammadu Buhari to act decisively to end the scourge of killer herdsmen and bandits.

“It is a clear augury of state failure when in any part of Nigeria, terrorists of any description can attack defenceless civilians without consequence. Clearly, the Nigerian state has lost its monopoly of the use of force.

“This is time for leadership by President Buhari. No one is, or should be, above the laws of Nigeria. We simply cannot have a country in which the authorities act decisively to squash peaceful protests by citizens but appear impotent against terrorists and terrorism
