Youth Democratic Party Submits Letter Of Intent To Participate In 2023 Poll

The Nigeria Youths Democratic Party (NYPD) on Tuesday submitted its letter of intent to register as a political party and participate in the 2023 elections.

As monitored by Native Reporters, the National Chairman of the party, Barry Johnson after submitting the letter of intent at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Abuja urged youths to participate in the electioneering process that will enthrone a new leadership in the country.

Johnson urged Nigerian youths to join the NYPD noting that there is a need for Nigerian youths to break the monopoly of leaders who cling to power at the expense of the nation.

“We will like to call on Nigerian youths both home and abroad. They are already automatic members of the Nigeria Youths Democratic Party.

“We have our own political party now so it will be fraudulent for any Nigerian youth to join a failed and a sinking ship.

“We want the world to know that we are a political party that is under registration process with INEC and we are not holding ourselves back from what we can provide for the Nigerian people,” he said.

Johnson stressed the need for INEC to do the needful by registering the NYPD as the party is determined to save the nation’s democracy.

APC governors forum DG accuses Transparency International of attempting to influence 2023 polls

The Director-General of the Progressives Governors Forum, Salihu Lukman, has accused Transparency International of attempting to influence the outcome of Nigeria’s 2023 general elections.

TI had in its 2020 report of Corruption Perception Index released on Thursday said Nigeria scored 25 out of 100 points, ranking 149 out of 183 countries surveyed. It was the country’s worst rating in years.

TI cited an absence of transparency, nepotism, lack of adequate anti-corruption legal frameworks, the prevalence of bribery and extortion in the Nigerian Police, corruption in the security sector, among others, as reasons for the low rating. But in a statement issued on Tuesday, the PGF DG described the rating as a poor attempt at politicising the fight against corruption.

“For a government that prioritises the fight against corruption to have been condemning in the way the CPI report did, it is not only indicting but troubling,” the statement partly read.

Given that it is a report of “perception by Nigerian businesses and country experts on the level of corruption in the public sector”, it is important to engage the issue beyond the media campaign going on, which may only be gaining prominence because of the widespread sentiments of Nigerians that every government initiative promotes corrupt practices and every public official is corrupt.

“With or without the 2020 CPI report, this is the belief of most Nigerians. Therefore, the 2020 CPI report only help to advance the gullibility of most Nigerians with a report of the survey of ‘perception by Nigerian businesses and country experts.’”

Nandi Kanu is “made in China Shekau” – Aisha Yesufu Blasts IPOB Leaders

Aisha Yesufu, popular activist, on Tuesday, reacted to the warning issued to her by Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.

Yesufu described Kanu as “made in China Shekau.”

The IPOB leader had warned Yesufu, a co-convener of BringBackOurGirls, BBOG, advocacy group to be “very careful” over her comment on the Eastern Security Network, ESN.

The activist had condemned ESN attack on Fulani herdsmen and killing of their cows in Isuikwuato area of Abia State.

She had wondered why the government would allow a parallel security outfit in the country.

Yesufu had declared the ESN action as unacceptable, which should not be condoned.

Against this backdrop, the IPOB leader warned the activist to be very careful.

However, Yesufu while sharing Kanu’s warning, wrote: “Tell the Made in China Shekau that I am not one of those #VictimMentality people that are swayed by his premature beard and stooped posture that he has taken on that have them kissing his feet with his infantile outbursts and decision making that have had him out in the cold.”

  • Court adjourns Orji Uzor Kalu’s arraignment until June 7 as EFCC seeks transfer

Court adjourns Orji Uzor Kalu’s arraignment until June 7 as EFCC seeks transfer

Tuesday, adjourned the arraignment of Sen. Orji Uzor Kalu, charged for alleged N7.1 billion fraud until June 7.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) was to arraign Kalu, following a Supreme Court order that he and his co-defendants in fraud charge be retried, having quashed the 12-year jail sentence handed to them by a Federal High Court in Lagos.

When the matter was called, counsel to the EFCC, Mr Chile Okoronma told the court that there was a preliminary matter that needed to be resolved before the former Abia governor could be arraigned.

According to Okoronma, the prosecution has written a letter to the Chief Judge of the court seeking a transfer of the matter to the Lagos division of the Court.

“Looking at the charge sheet, no element of any of the offences took place in Abuja.

“We will be asking that the matter be adjourned “sine die” (indefinitely) while we await the response from the chief judge,” Okoronma submitted.

He held that proceeding with the matter in the Abuja division of the court would be an exercise in futility.
The trial judge, Justice Inyang Ekwo, however, refused to adjourn the matter indefinitely and insisted that counsel should take a specific date to return to court.
