FG insincere about security in Nigeria – Gov Wike

The Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, has insisted that the Federal Government is not sincere about security in Nigeria.

He spoke while featuring on Channels Television programme, Sunday Politics.

According to Wike, “First, you have to ask yourself, is the Federal Government sincere? Are they serious about making sure that there is security in all the states? If you ask me, I would say No.

“We must understand when people play about politics. The Federal Government is not sincere about security.

“What I am saying today is not new, but again, one has to speak up to say this is not the way the country must move.”

He added, “Our concern is to make sure they provide security for this country. That is what they would say. Now, how have they made sure they made provision for the security of lives and property in each state for us to have confidence and trust in the government?

“Take, for example. We came up with a proposal to say in order to help the security agencies incapacitated in terms of manpower. We came up with a neighbourhood watch to give intelligence to help us to work. That was the decision of the security council, not my decision, not the party’s decision.

“The assembly approved it. We went ahead to appoint people who are retired security officers. We wrote to the army, to the SSS, to the police to make sure they profiled those who have applied to help in terms of security and they all certified them.”

Hoodlums Clash With Amotekun In Ibadan. Five Killed, Houses Burnt

Five youths who were keeping vigil in the Labiran area of Ibadan were shot dead during a clash between the operatives of the Oyo State Security network, codenamed Amotekun, and hoodlums on Friday evening.

Labiran has been troubled by some hoodlums in the last few days, necessitating youths to keep vigil to avert robbery.

On Thursday night, over 200 houses were razed while hoodlums killed a young man in the area.

One of the youths in the area, who simply identified himself as Wale, said following the burning and looting of properties in the area, elders in the community invited youth to stay awake to avert a recurrence.

“It is true; they killed four of our friends. Their families have taken them for burial this morning. Our fathers invited us to keep vigil. When we heard that those miscreants were coming, one of our brothers invited the operatives of Amotekun to help us.

“On arrival, they started shooting sporadically while hoodlums were also shooting. As a result, Monsuru, Ridwan and two other people were killed.

“They have taken their corpses for burial. Those hoodlums later came back to our area around 5 am. As we speak, they are burning houses again. Smoke is everywhere. Many have fled our area now. We need help,” he said.

Nigerian actor Uche Maduagwu comes out as “proudly gay”

Nigerian actor Uche Maduagwu has come out as “proudly gay” in an Instagram video, and in subsequent posts has urged other people to come out.

In a post yesterday (29 January), the actor uploaded a picture of himself alongside a caption saying “proudly gay” while upbeat music played in the background. He captioned his post, saying: “Appreciate others and #share only love we need to respect peoples choices not to judge them so lets practice jesus kind of love.”

In a follow-up post, he urged others to come out and share their identity, saying: “Don’t let anyone intimidate you. Come out, show your identity, you are who you are, boy, you’re who you are. Don’t let anybody intimidate you. I be gay, I be no herdsman, and I am proud.”

A third post then urges newly elected President Joe Biden to take action against Nigeria for its anti-LGBTQ+ attitudes, and claimed that up to 40% of the current legislators in the country were gay.

Melania Trump Could Be Set To Divorce Donald Trump, Expert Says

Melania Trump’s reported move to get her own office space could be a hint she plans to split from Donald Trump, an expert claims.

The former First Lady’s move “could well be preparatory steps for explaining to Donald that she’d like to separate”, the relationship guru says.

Her office is currently functioning out of the former President’s private club, Mar-a-Lago, CNN reports

But Melania is said to be looking for separate space in the Palm Beach area.

It is reported that Melania will maintain three of her White House staff as she looks to build on the “Be Best” campaign she ran while in office.

While running the campaign she seemingly turned a blind eye to her husband’s own social media bullying.

Family mediator Louisa Whitney, of LKW Family Mediation, told the Daily Star that while it’s not unusual for someone to have been unhappy in a relationship for some time but to have stayed for a variety of reasons – there can be “preparations for the separation”.

She says this includes purchasing new property, being sure a person will have an income in the event of a separation or setting up counselling for emotional support.

Whitney said: “Melania’s wish for a separate office could well be preparatory steps for explaining to Donald that she’d like to separate – she might be seeking to set up a role for herself that builds on the work she did as First Lady.

“She might also want to be setting up an identity for herself in her own right. It can be hard I think for anyone separating to establish themselves as just that person rather than part of a couple – especially if their partner was more high-profile, more outgoing or better-known than them.”

Tina Wilson, a leading relationship expert and Founder of Wingman app, agrees that Melania seems to want to “forge her own path” with the office move – but says that may just be with her business activities.

Wilson says: “As the former first lady, Melania has been under the microscope for the last four years, being analysed, criticised, loved and hated as she has stood by Donald, who has revelled in the attention.

  • Seven to eight kidnappers out of ten arrested are Fulanis, but not every Fulani is a criminal – Sultan of Sokoto

Seven to eight kidnappers out of ten arrested are Fulanis, but not every Fulani is a criminal – Sultan of Sokoto

Sultan of Sokoto, HRH Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, has said seven to eight out of every ten kidnappers arrested in Nigeria are Fulani.

However, the monarch said that it was wrong to label all Fulani criminals or use ‘Fulanis herdsmen criminal’ to explain developments because of the misdeeds of some of them.

He said, “I am a Fulani, and I am not a bad man. I am also not a criminal. Those engaged in one forms of crimes or another are across the country. It is not proper to refer to any tribe to describe individuals’ crime.

“For example, when they collected N10m, where and how do you spend this amount in the bush? The money is back in the city. I have told the Inspector General of police to check this; we are not saying Fulanis are not part of the kidnappings as mentioned by the Secretary of Miyetti Allah, seven to eight kidnappers arrested are Fulanis, but that doesn’t mean ever Fulani is a criminal, no they are not.

“We must put hands together to bring an end to this problem. We are going to approach the President to talk to our West African neighbours where we have Fulanis like Senegal, Niger Republic Guinea and Mali, to help us because most of these bandit cross from neighbouring countries conducted their criminal act and run back.”

The meeting comes in the wake of tensions, especially across the South-West states which many have attributed to criminal Fulani herdsmen.

A Yoruba activist, Sunday Igboho, had given Fulanis in the Ibarapa axis of Oyo State an ultimatum to leave following allegations of criminality.

Videos shared on social media showed Igboho holding a well-attended rally where he swore to drive out Fulani herdsmen from the entire Yorubaland for causing insecurity and banditry.

Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State also issued a quit notice to all herdsmen to vacate government reserve forests in the state.

  • FG threatens to arrest, prosecute anyone who fights within it’s chambers

FG threatens to arrest, prosecute anyone who fights within it’s chambers

The House of Representatives has threatened to arrest any member or group of persons who would constitute themselves into a nuisance within the confines of the National Assembly Complex in the future.

The warning was issued in a statement on Friday by the spokesman of the House, Benjamin Kalu who was reacting to a fight that erupted on Thursday in Abuja between members of the oil host communities in the Niger Delta region during a public hearing on the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB).

He said that the House was disappointed by the unhealthy development, stressing that the action defiled and desecrated the sanctity of the parliament.

Titled “Re: Scuffle at the Public Hearing of the Petroleum Industry Bill the statement read thus in full: “The House is appalled at the scuffle which broke out between certain participants from the host communities at the public hearing of the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB), 2020 on Thursday, January 28, 2021.

“The actions of these culprits were contemptuous and constituted a breach of the sanctity of the House. Fortunately, they were immediately escorted out of the building and proceedings continued peacefully for the rest of the hearing.

“This 9th House of Representatives was predicated upon the tenet of nation-building as a joint task and our compliance with the due process of public hearings is a manifestation of our commitment to that tenet. Public hearings are a critical aspect of law-making.

“They are an opportunity to invite views from critical stakeholders on legislative interventions and are not an opportunity for virulent altercations or physical combat. Therefore, the House will not hesitate to ensure the arrest and prosecution of any offender who perpetrates a similar occurrence in the future.

“Within the chambers of this great institution of democracy, and indeed in all parts of Nigeria, we must learn to deliberate and resolve our differences with the grace, dignity and mutual respect that democracy demands.

“The deliberation of the PIB is to provide legal backing and protection for the development of host communities and for the collective good of the nation; a balance of interest between stakeholders of the petroleum sector.

“Therefore, our ability to dissent peacefully and our ability to treat each other with dignity and respect even in the face of disagreement will play a key role in determining the success of one of the ideals for which this legislation is being considered; that grievance can be properly addressed without violence and chaos in our host communities.

“The House remains on track to pass the PIB by April 2021, mindful that the legislation will reinvigorate the petroleum industry and promote economic growth in the host communities and the nation at large,” it concluded.
