50% Of Passenger Vehicles Will Be Electric By 2040

On a global scale, passenger electric vehicles shot up from 450,000 to 2.1 million in 2019. According to A BloombergNEF report, there was a brief slump in 2020, sending the figure down to 1.7 million.

By 2025, however, it is estimated that sales will reach 8.5 million as new markets open up and battery prices drop. The figure is projected to rise to 26 million by 2030, more than doubling to 54 million by 2040.

According to the report, by 2040, 50% of passenger vehicles will be powered by electricity. As of 2020, the global penetration rate stands at 2.7%. It is set to increase to 10% by 2025, further to 28% by 2030 and reach 58% by 2040.

The penetration rate in markets like China and Europe is much higher than the global average. However, it is dragged down by emerging markets where adoption is still limited.

China will continue accounting for the lion’s share of global EV sales, reaching 54% in 2025. But as adoption becomes more widespread, the share will drop to 49% in 2030 and further down to 33% by 2040.

Despite the impressive growth in electric vehicle sales, there is a risk that the market could become crowded. BloombergNEF estimates that there could be up to 500 models of EVs available globally by 2022.

During the year 2020, Toyota Motor North America (TMNA) posted sales of 2.11 million vehicles. Compared to its 2019 performance, it marked a decline of 11.3% in sales volume.

For the 21st consecutive year, it was the top manufacturer globally when it comes to alternative vehicle sales. These include all-electric, fuel cell and hybrid vehicles.

According to the research data analyzed and published by Sijoitusrahastot, in the hybrid vehicle segment, Toyota sold a total of 337,036 cars during the year, an increase of 22.7% year-over-year (YoY). Compared to the total sales volume, hybrid sales accounted for a 16% share.

With the inclusion of the new Venza, Mirai and Sienna models, the company now has a total of 14 alternative vehicles on its lineup.

Though hybrids have been around for about two decades, they are experiencing a gradual resurgence. Toyota is not the only automaker keen on capitalizing on the trend.

80-Year-Old Tanzanian Dies During Sex With His 33-Year-Old Lover In Hotel

An 80-year-old man identified as David Mluli lost his life at a hotel in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, while he was having a hot romp with his 33-year-old lover.

Mr Mluli reportedly collapsed and died suddenly on Saturday, January 16, while he was in room number 22 at Mbezi Garden Hotel in Dar es Salaam, where he had gone to relax in the company of his girlfriend identified as Neema Kibaya.

Sources say the two had arrived shortly at the hotel with Mluli arriving first before his companion.

The Kinondoni Regional Police Commander, Mr Ramadhan Kingai, who confirmed the incident on Monday, January 18, told journalists that the police force received a phone call from Mbezi Garden Hotel manager Newton Mkonda on January 16 at around 3pm.

The caller informed the law enforcers of the sudden death of a client at the hotel who had occupied room number 22.

“The police arrived at the area and found Mr Mluli’s body along with a woman who identified herself as Neema Kibaya. Ms Kibaya told the police of the love relationship she had with the deceased,” said Kingai.

Police then took the body to Mwananyamala Hospital for postmortem while Ms Kibaya, a resident of Goba and a businesswoman, has been detained.

Preliminary investigations, he said, showed that Mr Mluli could have died from a normal death because his body shows no signs that there was any form of confrontation between him and any other person prior to the death.

“There were no direct physical signs that could have been noted as doubtful with exception of his under wears getting wet before he passed away,” said Mr Kingai.

While searching in the room, police found out that Mr Mluli was in possession of Sh37,000, his national identification card and Tecno mobile handset. Medical experts at the Mwananyamala Hospital will conduct a postmortem as soon as his relatives shown up.

“Postmortem protocols demand the presence of a relative of the deceased who has to identify the body before burial preparations.” he added.

  • FG released 4,000 inmates serving different jail terms

FG released 4,000 inmates serving different jail terms

The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, on Tuesday explained why the Federal Government released 4,000 inmates serving different jail terms in correctional facilities across the country.

Aregbesola, who addressed journalists shortly after inaugurating the 53 operational vehicles purchased for the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) in Abuja, said the inmates benefited from the federal government’s Amnesty Programme launched in April 2020.

The minister also revealed that NCoS had a deluge of Awaiting Trial Persons (ATPs), saying the exercise had gone a long way in reducing the number of inmates in the correctional facilities.

He said: “The absence of quick dispensation of justice has been a major drawback to operational efficiency in offenders’ management, often precipitating agitations, jailbreaks as well as escape tendencies.

“Other essential and routine services like taking inmates to the hospital during emergencies, sewage disposal, supply of potable water, and so on require steady functional logistics which were grossly inadequate.”

  • Insecurity: Senate won’t fight Buhari to please anybody — Lawan

The Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, said on Tuesday the upper legislative chamber would not fight President Muhammadu Buhari over the worsening insecurity in Nigeria to please critics of the administration.

Lawan, who stated this when he received a delegation from Adamawa State in Abuja, said President Buhari is doing everything possible to address the problem of insecurity in the country.

He commended the military for restoring peace in parts of Nigeria, saying the spate of insecurity across states was gradually being reversed.

Lawan said: “Those of us in positions of leadership today are probably more challenged than any set of leaders. We need to pray, but we also need to act, work hard and apply ourselves fully and work committedly to ensure that we serve Nigerians.

“Nothing is impossible; this situation of insecurity gradually is being reversed. I am particularly happy with recent developments about our armed forces. They are doing better than they were doing before.

“I’m sure the economy will also start to improve, and we will get out of the recession that we entered last month. With the implementation of 2020 budget up till the end of March, and of course, the start of the implementation of 2021 budget, the economy will receive a boost.”
