FG to sanction expatriate policy violators

The Special Ministerial Task Force on Monitoring and Enforcement of Nigerian Expatriate Business Permit and Expatriate Quota Administration has said the Federal Government will sanction any company that fails to comply with the law guiding the employment of qualified Nigerians to understudy expatriates.

To ensure compliance with the policy, the task force has directed companies in the country to submit the Tax Identification Number, National Identification Numbers, phone numbers, and email addresses of Nigerians understudying expatriates in their firms.

The chairman of the task force, Mr Bola Ilori, said in a statement on Sunday that all companies must submit the details of Nigerians understudying expatriates within their organisations to verify their sincerity or otherwise.

He said this decision was reached after the meeting of the task force with representatives of the Nigerian Immigration Service, Nigeria Labour Congress; Nigerian Bar Association; Nigerian Society of Engineers; other professional bodies, and officials of the Ministry of Interior.

Ohanaeze: Imo election an act in futility, shun exercise – Okwukwu to Ndigbo

A factional Deputy President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Dimm Uche Okwukwu had advised Ndigbo against taking part in any election being organized in Imo State in the name of Ohanaeze Ndigbo.

This is coming after Okwukwu was elected alongside others at a parallel Ohanaeze election, which was held in Enugu on Saturday, under the Prince Richard Ozobu election committee.

Another election is underway in Imo State, being conducted by the Chief Garri Igariwey committee.

But in a statement he made available on Sunday, Okwukwu said the tenure of Chief Nnia Nwodo-led executive had expired and that as such, it lacked powers to spearhead an election.

His statement read: “The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has received credible information to the effect that Chief Gary Igariwey, who had in the last two weeks purportedly claimed to chair a non-existing Electoral Committee, EC, is about to organize an election in Owerri, Imo State, with the aim of announcing an illegal National Executive Council, NEC, we therefore wish to inform the general public that:

“The Igariwey committee is illegal, null and void. It is a subject of litigation before an Umuahia high court and we urge Ndigbo to completely disassociate themselves from such illegality. Any action, commission or omission, by the Igariwey-led committee is of no consequence. Whatever emanates from it cannot stand the test of time.

“In my former position as Secretary General before the midnight of 9th January 2021 when my term constitutionally expired, I repeatedly said any Imeobi, NEC, Council of Elders or General Assembly summoned by persons other than me was illegal, null and void.

“What is frightening today is that a purported election is being conducted after the 9th January 2021 expiration of the term of office of the former NEC. One wonders what the Igariwey charade is all about? How can an election be conducted after the expiration of term of office? Even the Nigerian state does not conduct election outside the term of office of an executive. If what is about to happen in Owerri had happened in the larger Nigeria, Ndigbo would have condemned it. How

“I call upon Ndigbo to rally round their newly elected President General, Engr Chidi Ibeh, and members of his NEC. His emergence, against threats of ostracism and violence, is a true testament that Ndigbo are a free people with the capacity to decide who leads them.

“We congratulate all Igbos, particularly those who mistakenly bought forms from the Igariwey committee to contest for offices, particularly the office of the President General, PG, and who for the greater interest of Ndigbo withdrew from the election in the face of overwhelming irregularities. We congratulate Dr Joe Nworgu, Chief Chris Asoluka and Professor Chidi Osuagwu. These men of honour will be remembered when the history of Ndigbo is properly written.

“Finally, my deepest gratitude goes to the highly efficient Global Igbo Leaders for the great role it played in seeing that Igboland remains stable without violence. I must mention Prof Uzodinma Nwala of Alaigbo Development Foundation (ADF); Prof Anthony Ejiofor and Dr Festus Okere of World Igbo Congress (WIC) USA; Dr Nwachukwu Anakwenze, Chief Christian Onuorah and Chief Oliver Nwankwor of Igbo World Assembly (IWA) Worldwide and Prof Chika Moore and Ngozi Odumuko of Nzuko Umunna (USA and Nigeria).

“Ndigbo recognize the immense contribution of Ben Allison of Ndi Igbo Canada; Luke Nwannunu of Ekwe Nche USA; Barr Austin Okeke and Mazi Obi Okoli of Igbo Board of Deputies Worldwide and Barr Alex Coker Ezeamakam of Council of Igbo Communities UK. We are proud of Ogbuefi Delly Ajufo of Aka Ikenga Nigeria; Mazi Obi Okoli of Council of Igbo Leaders UK; Chief Oliver Nwankwor and Barr Alex Coker Ezeamakam of European Igbo Communities (EIC) Europe and Mazi Amadiebube Mbama of Council of Igbo States in America (CISA) USA.

“It is not true that after the 1929 Aba Women Riots, the Igbo woman turned her back on politics. Iyom Josephine Anenih and Mrs Regina Amadi of Nkata Ndi Iyom Igbo (Nigeria and Uk) are resolute in advancing the Igbo interests. I thank these great amazons; including Mrs Joy Ukaegbu and Mrs Eunice Onwuamaegbu of One Voice UK; and Mrs Amaka Agabi of Women Support and Mediation Group UK.”

Emulate “True Democrat Buhari”, APC Tells U.S Politicians

The All Progressives Congress has called on US President Donald Trump to emulate President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Nigeria’s ruling party said this in a statement on Sunday by John Akpanudoedehe, the Publicity Secretary of the party’s Caretaker and Extra-ordinary Convention Planning Committee.

The statement was entitled, ‘The integrity of a leader is as important as strong institutions’.

The APC faulted President Trump for refusing to concede defeat and condemned the US Capitol Hill riot by pro-Trump protesters.

The party noted that the US elections have always served as example to other nations, wondering what the country has turned out in the past 72hrs.

“President Muhammadu Buhari contested and lost elections a couple of times and followed the process through to the Supreme Court on all accounts. This is an outstanding credential of a true democrat.

“Upon ultimately gaining victory in 2015, the APC-led administration has carried out fundamental reforms to strengthen our institutions.

“For instance, non-interference in the functions of INEC. The APC has contested elections; won some, lost some without splitting hairs. In fact, at some point, the APC lost over 5 states to the PDP, yet we allowed democracy to prevail. We have remained resolute in our belief that in every electoral contest, popular will must prevail,” it said.

Ex-Skye Bank chair petitions EFCC over alleged forceful takeover of company

Former chairperson of the board of directors of the defunct Skye Bank Plc, Tunde Ayeni, has petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over an alleged forceful takeover of a company by his partner, Hosa Okunbo.

In a petition by Femi Falana, counsel to Mr Ayeni, the petitioner asked the EFCC to investigate alleged gross mismanagement and criminal diversion of company funds by Mr Okunbo.

In the petition, dated December 7, Mr Ayeni alleged that Mr Okunbo, his partner at Ocean Marine Solutions (OMS) Limited since 2003, allegedly schemed him out of the control of the company.

The petitioner said he and Mr Okunbo invested in the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), but his partner moved the company’s account to another bank and abandoned repayment of a $100 million loan used for the acquisition of the firm.

Mr Ayeni said he discovered “a lot of stealing and diversion as well as gross mismanagement of large sums of money belonging to the company,” urging the anti-graft commission to step in.

“Subsequently,” the petition reads in part, “Capt. Hosa Okunbo told our client that all accounts of the businesses that he was involved in for which he was a signatory, was being rumoured to be closed because of the trial our client was facing, and it was important for him to step aside from the Ocean Marine and its subsidiaries structure and hand over to him, so that he could protect the income sources as that was the only source of income with which to fund the faithful repayment of the gross liabilities, which were well over $150 million owed to a consortium of banks led by Polaris Bank over the acquisition of the IBEDC and the YEDC DisCos as at the time.

“Our client agreed to the advice and did not doubt Capt. Hosa Okunbo’s sincerity and intention to act in good faith, based on the trust our client had in him as they had both been working and partnering together since July 2003.

“At no point was an actual sale of his interest in Ocean Marine Solutions Ltd or any of its subsidiaries or affiliates ever discussed, but Capt. Hosa Okunbo is trying to use the gentlemen’s arrangement to forcefully take over his holdings of the Company whose monthly income is about $9 million.”

Mr Ayeni claimed that, however, since the suggestion was effected, their client does not receive emails and briefings from the group in respect of the businesses and finances any longer, but was getting the monthly allowance they had agreed to be paying themselves

Amaechi spell out reasons behind execution of Ibadan-Kano rail construction delay

The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has revealed that the non-approval of the $5.3bn from the Chinese government is what is stalling the execution of the Ibadan-Kano rail project.

Amaechi, who appeared on the television programme, NTA Weekend Deal in Abuja on Saturday, January 9, explained that once the loan is approved, the project will take off immediately.

The former Rivers State Governor admitted that to complete all planned rail projects, the Federal Government has to rely on loans sourced from the Chinese government and their banks, and where a project take-off is delayed, it means the loan has not been approved.

Amaechi added that though the Federal Government had long given its approval for the contract, some investors who showed interest in helping Nigeria have suddenly developed cold feet.

While answering a question on what could be delaying the take-off of the long awaited Ibadan-Kano rail project, Amaechi said:

“We are waiting for the Chinese government and bank to approve the $5.3 billion to construct the Ibadan-Kano. What was approved a year ago was the contract.

“The moment I announced that the Federal Government has awarded a contract of $5.3 billion to China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) to construct the Ibadan-Kano rail line, they assume the money has come in, no.

“Up to now, we have not gotten the money a year after we applied for the loan. We have almost finished the one of Lagos-Ibadan. If we don’t get the loan now, we can’t commence.”

Amaechi said the Ibadan-Kano rail would link six areas which span Kaduna-Kano-Abuja-Minna-Ilorin-Oshogbo-Ibadan where cargoes could be moved to Kano from Lagos, adding that the causes of frequent accidents stemming from wet cargoes would be addressed once the rail line becomes functional.

“When the Ibadan to Kano rail project is completed, wet and dry cargoes can be transported from Lagos to Kano.

“Nigerians should be more patient with the Ministry of Transportation over the issue of wet cargoes. Currently, we are trying to construct the railway into the seaports to enable us transport either wet or dry cargoes to various destinations. The only wet cargo that can go now is between Lagos to Ibadan.

“The moment we conclude that, we will be able to move wet cargoes all the way to Kano from Lagos. We should also commence the construction of Port Harcourt to Maiduguri. We should be able to move cargoes from Bonny to Maiduguri.

Soyinka laments insecurity, says Nigeria’s sovereignty taken over by armed groups

Prof. Wole Soyinka, has called for a national mobilisation to combat the menace of insecurity bedevilling the country.
He also said Nigeria’s sovereignty had been taken away by Boko Haram terrorists, bandits and other criminal elements.Uuu

In a direct reference to President Muhammadu Buhari, the Nobel laureate said the President could not end the country’s insecurity challenge, sitting down in Aso Rock.

According to him, Nigeria has reached the “stage of desperation”. The government should be willing to “pay people to come and help us” in defence against Boko Haram insurgents, bandits, and other criminal elements.

Soyinka said, “There are those on whose shoulders must be placed the primary responsibility and that include some former Heads of State who refused to see the inevitability of what we are going through right now.

“I am very glad that the northern elite is now speaking up, boldly and practically, (and are also) now taking measures which they should have taken years ago. They’ve moved beyond the unbelievable policies of actually paying killers to stop killing. I don’t want to mention names, but some admitted that they were paying protection money to killers instead of dealing with that cancer in the only way they should, which is excision, to take out killers instead of giving them money.

“You don’t appease evil, and we are dealing with evil; there is no other word, we are dealing with the proliferation, the enthronement of evil in society. And unfortunately, we have encouraged its manifestation, its proliferation, its entrenchment.

“So, let them get away with the issue of sovereignty. If they have to pay people to come and help us, then call them whatever you want. Please go ahead because we’ve reached that stage of desperation.

“But I will prefer a general mobilisation in which people are trained, farmers especially are trained to work with the hoe in one hand and the gun in the other hand, ready to protect their lives, their harvests and the rest of us.

“We are not unique; history is full of those situations. I would like to see a national mobilisation. Let’s be practical.”

Reporters reported that at least 43 rice farmers were beheaded by Boko Haram terrorists in Borno State last November.

Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, had consequently urged the Federal Government to engage mercenaries and the militaries of neighbouring countries, like Chad and Cameroon, to crush the over decade-old Boko Haram insurgency.

Soyinka added, “From a self-protective point of view, it is a common problem; it is a national, collective issue. Don’t just sit there and think that you can solve it from Aso Rock; no. This now concerns even the lowest common citizens in this nation because that lowest, that most impotent individual has become a prime target. So, it’s a collective issue. I’m not surprised some governors now say let us reach outside help; I have also said something. I don’t say mercenaries necessarily, but this has gone beyond a Nigerian problem.

“Instead of that, what do I hear? Somebody gets on the podium and say, ‘The sovereignty of this nation cannot be challenged. Please, don’t let us hear any more of that rubbish. The sovereignty of this nation is in the hands of the murdering herdsmen. The sovereignty of this nation has already been taken over by Boko Haram; it’s been taken over by ISWAP, it’s been taken over by those with absolutely no respect for what is called national integrity.”

Soyinka also said Buhari’s nepotistic tendencies were outrageous, adding that the President appointed wrong people into the wrong places.

Soyinka’s statement comes two weeks after the Bishop of Sokoto Catholic Diocese, Mathew Kukah, also accused the President of nepotism.

Meanwhile, Soyinka also warned that the Western Nigeria Security Network, otherwise known as Amotekun, must not transform into another form of the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad.

The writer said Amotekun operatives must be trained in ethics to not end on the wrong side of history.

Soyinka said, “Community policing, like Amotekun, is a recognition of the fact that the civic part of the entire national polity has got to wake up in not just its defence but also survival.

“I have told them that anytime they want us to come and assist; we will come even if it is just on the ethical session so that as you are training them to defend us, we are also training their minds so that Amotekun does not become another SARS – very important. We must do everything together.

“It is about time the public examined itself; what are we made up of? Are there those among us who, if they got into power, will behave exactly as those kinds of agencies which we are repudiating and against which we are protesting? There is no excuse for the brutality that occurred in the wake of the noise, rumour or reality of people being shot at the Lekki tollgate.”

  • Buhari is diverting attention from corruption says PDP

Buhari is diverting attention from corruption says PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration of resorting to diversionary tactics by attacking the opposition.

The party noted the ruling party has been churning out long epistles of lies and false performance claims, which the PDP said will not save the administration from accounting for its atrocities in office.

In a statement on Tuesday by the spokesman for the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan, that party declared that diversionary tactics would not save the APC and its leaders from answering for their alleged atrocities.

According to the main opposition party, the alleged atrocities by the APC leaders included the “stealing of over N15 trillion public funds, manipulating the Buhari administration and importing terrorists and bandits for 2019 general elections who are now on rampage, killing innocent Nigerians, particularly in the northern parts of our nation”.

Continuing, the PDP said: “We know that APC’s attack is a desperate diversionary tactics as more revelations continue to emerge on how its leaders and some presidency officials pillaged our national treasury and stole over N15 trillion naira as well as how the APC has been patronizing bandits with our national resources.

“This is especially given the decision by our party to expose such APC leaders, in addition to the rising public demand on President Muhammadu Buhari to recover the money and prosecute the culprits.

“Our party also notes the plots by current APC leadership to blackmail and ridicule President Buhari by pushing out fake performance claims, like those contained in the press statement by its illegal caretaker committee on Tuesday, January 5, 2021, which was designed to rubbish Mr. President, highlight his failures and deflect attention from the atrocities of the APC.

NUC gives universities date to re-open after 10 months

The Nigerian University Commission (NUC) has revealed a new date for university lecturers to resume academic activities following the suspension of a ten-month-old industrial action by the Academic Staff union of Universities (ASUU).

The new date was announced in a statement issued on Thursday by the NUC’s Deputy Executive Secretary (Administration), Chris Maiyaki, on behalf of the Executive Secretary, Professor Abubakar Rasheed which directed vice-chancellors of universities to resume academic activities on January 18.

In the statement, the NUC added that the directive was in accordance with the directive of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19, noting further that universities must under no circumstance violate the full cycle of the semester system.

It also urged universities to safeguard lives by strictly adhering to the extant safety protocols and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) guidelines, which have been communicated severally through NUC’s circulars.

“I am to add that universities on resumption of academic activities must under no circumstance violate the full cycle of the semester system, consistent with the Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards (BMAS) approved by the NUC, as well as other extant quality assurance standards and guidelines,” the statement noted.

The new resumption date ordered by the NUC came less than two weeks after ASUU suspended its ten-month-old strike after the federal government met their demands, including paying the lecturers their outstanding salaries using an older payment platform, GIFMIS.

  • Trump Orders U.S. Ambassadors Appointed By Obama To Leave Posts

Trump Orders U.S. Ambassadors Appointed By Obama To Leave Posts

The White House has finally asked thousands of President Donald Trump’s political appointees to resign.

The appointees, ranging from ambassadors to schedulers, are to resign on Inauguration Day.

President Trump administration had stalled this formality for weeks as the outgoing leader disputed the election outcome.

A White House directive was emailed to agency heads on Thursday that political appointees must resign effective Jan. 20.

President-elect Joe Biden will take over office on the said date

The order was issued by Chris Liddell, the deputy White House chief of staff who has been leading transition arrangements with the Biden team, and was first reported by Politico.

The call for appointees resignations followed Trump’s statement early Thursday that there would be an orderly transfer of power come January 20.

Before now the White House had refused to issue the call for resignations since November 2020 when Biden was confirmed winner of the presidential election

Every outgoing administration in the US is expected to issue the order between Election Day and mid-December.

In Trump’s case, White House officials declined to request the resignations because Trump rejected Biden’s victory and file a flury of court cases challenging the voting results in the courts
