  • Get ready to hand over power to PDP in 2023-Wike to APC

Get ready to hand over power to PDP in 2023-Wike to APC

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has told the All Progressives Congress (APC) to prepare its handover notes at the federal level for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in 2023.

The governor boasted that Nigerians were earnestly waiting for the PDP to take over power in order to ensure good governance in the country.

Wike spoke on Wednesday at the inauguration of the 11.53km Agbonchai-Afam road, connecting Eleme and Oyigbo local government areas and performed by the former Senate Majority Leader, Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume.

The governor in a statement signed by his Special Assistant, Media, Kelvin Ebiri, said PDP had continued to satisfy the increased yearnings of Nigerians for good governance, improved economy and developmental projects in its various states.

He said: “Eleme people, I want to sincerely thank you for the support that you’ve given to me and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Do not relent. Continue because the hope of this country depends on PDP.”

He said the PDP was working in Rivers and its various controlled states insisting that the party would kick out the APC at the centre.

He urged Senator Ndume and the APC to respect the wishes of Nigerians, who were determined to return the PDP to power in 2023.

He said: “To our special Guest of Honour (Ndume), he should not be angry because we are taking over from them. When they came, we didn’t fight, they took over. Now, that Nigerians have decided to change them, let them also hand over to us as quickly as possible without any fight.”

The governor expressed happiness for fulfilling the promise of reconstructing the Eleme-Afam road when he campaigned in the area saying the completed road would serve as an alternative route to neighbouring states.

Wike also said his administration completely rebuilt the Government Secondary School in Onne Town with the one in Eteo reaching finishing level.

He said: “Today, we are in Eleme commissioning Agbonchia (in Eleme)-Afam in Oyigbo Local Government Road. This road traverses two Local Government Areas. Nobody will say that we have not come to Rivers East Senatorial District to do anything.

“As I speak to you now, by the end of this month, we are coming back to Alesa Secondary School and Ascension High School. Those schools will be rebuilt completely.

“And because you gave me a good, reliable and trusted person who is my Commissioner of Finance, there is this other road here that needs attention, I will reconstruct it.”

In his remarks, Ndume, who inaugurated the 11.53km road, said he felt truly humbled to perform the task and be part of Wike’s achievements.

Ndume described governor Wike as a true nationalist and an important voice in national affairs across parties adding that the governor was famous for speaking truth to power.

He said: “Governor Wike is my very good friend, a trusted leader, a very honest person. One thing we have in common is that, as a leader, you must stand out and speak the truth even if you’re alone and Wike is known for that.

“There is new hope for the state and he is Wike. Now, Rivers is not only becoming a Garden City again but it is becoming a Golden City. May God continue to give you (Wike) the strength.

“And from today, know that you’re a leader in this country. If you’re not a friend and a nationalist, I will not be here, Fayemi will not be here and many other APC Governors

“You’re one of the true Nigerians that I ever know. And if we have people like you that speak the truth to power, Nigeria would have been better off for all of us.”

Ndume commended Wike for his feat in the fight against insecurity in Rivers, which he said gave the people the liberty to come out to participate in the inauguration without fear.

He said: “You don’t know what you have until you lose it. What you’re doing here, we will never try it in Borno State. You can’t invite people like this and everybody, comfortably, listening to somebody speaking without looking around. So, we have to thank God.

“Honestly, let me say here that Nigeria is lucky to have not only Rivers State but Rivers people. South-South, particularly the Rivers people are the great people of Nigeria. What you’re giving to this country; if Rivers is not there, Nigeria will not be there.”

Rivers State Commissioner for Works, Elloka Tasie-Amadi, said hitherto, the road was a nightmare.

“But, today it is something that brings joy and with it, the obvious tangible and psychological benefits that come with any good transportation access to any location or locality.

  • Dangote’s Behind, FCMB MD Paternity Snag And Nigerians’ Lust For Scandals, By Fredrick Nwabufo

Dangote’s Behind, FCMB MD Paternity Snag And Nigerians’ Lust For Scandals, By Fredrick Nwabufo

We love scandals.  ‘’we’’ I mean both the dramatis personae in a scandal and the spectators sitting in judgment. Why would a superior at a workplace get entangled in a sexual congress with a subordinate if not driven by depravity and adrenaline rush from eating a forbidden fruit? It is predatory for anyone in authority or in a higher position to get in the hay with a subordinate. It is classical animal predation.

I once worked in a financial institution. I regard that experience as an ‘’incident of the past’’ I do not want to relish. It is suspended in the past. Let’s just say I witnessed the transactional potential and perils of sex in the workplace. I have also worked in places where the MD serially exercised his manhood on female staff without care that his sexual exploits and libido are stuff of office gossip. I have seen things.

When the sordid details of an alleged affair between Adam Nuru, managing director of First City Monument Bank (FCMB), and Moyo Thomas, a former member of his staff, rippled on social media, I sighed to myself: ‘’another one’’. Nuru was alleged to have sired two children with Moyo while she worked at the bank. Moyo’s husband, Tunde Thomas reportedly died of trauma after he discovered the children did not come from his loins. There is another version of the tale which says Moyo revealed to Tunde that the kids were not his after she moved to the US and that the deceased had strayed into the arms of another woman before his death.

The ‘’facts’’ we have at the moment are mere conjectures and social media tittle-tattle. The characters in this alleged star-crossed affair have not given their own side of the story. ‘’We all need to hear both sides of the story’’ – the song by Phil Collins is my buffer. So, it is safe not to apportion blame or sit in judgment on this matter – not until all sides have their say.

FCMB says it is investigating the alleged affair and Nuru has been put on leave. This is a quick-witted response to an issue that could cause the bank loss of goodwill. Already, there is an avalanche of memes hitting at the moral fabric of the bank. Really, there is nothing more that chips away at brand perception than sexual scandals. In the eye of the public, any bank caught in the undertow of a sexual scandal is a whorehouse.

I think this incident is a clarion call to all corporate organisations, institutions and agencies; in fact, every workplace to check office relationships, particularly when they involve staff of their different cadre. There is an epidemic of ‘’office husband’’ and ‘’office wife’’ in workplaces. I have heard of cases where an ‘’office husband’’ eventually ended up sexually ravaging an ‘’office wife’’ who is married and has kids, destroying her home. I have also heard of cases where an ‘’office husband’’ conspired with his buddies at the workplace and took a married ‘’office wife’’ on an official trip to Dubai, sexually invading her in a hotel.

These office ‘’sexcapades’’ are rife.  They have become an abnormal normality in our work culture. We do not need to pretend about it; rather we should take back our workplaces from red-light avenues. The office is not a place for sexual relationships. Office romance complicates work relationship. It damages cohesion and trust. It creates room for animosity and vicious gossip. A situation where a superior is sexually involved with a subordinate fouls the sanctity of the workplace.

Also, considering that most people spend more time in their workplaces with colleagues than with their spouses and families, it is the more reason there should be strict enforcement of moral codes. Really, there is a tendency for the so-called ‘’office husband—office wife’’ relationship to snowball into a passionate and deadly affair that can cost a business gravely. Families and lives should not be destroyed in the corner office.

The workplace is a temple that should not be defied with sexual impurity. It is a workplace, not a red-light district.

On Aliko Dangote, a video of him in his mortal moments poppled on social media a few days ago – with some alleged consorts fighting over a right to his access. Well, Dangote being a billionaire does not make him a moralist or puritan. He is not a preacher or an Imam, and he never made pretensions of being celibate. Most importantly, he is not married.  As they say, he is single and free to mingle. But I cannot get that image off my head though.

  • FG to Revoke Visas of Foreigners Without COVID-19 Certificate

FG to Revoke Visas of Foreigners Without COVID-19 Certificate

The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Mr. Muhammed Babandede, has warned that foreign visitors who failed to present their COVID-19 test certificates on arrival in the country will have their visas revoked.

The immigration service boss said he has the powers as enshrined in the Immigration Act to revoke visas and confiscate passports of offenders, stressing that the next visa for global travel is the COVID-19 certificate.

Speaking at the weekly briefing of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 in Abuja yesterday, Babandede assured that the 100 travellers under a travel ban for flouting the mandatory seven-day post-arrival COVID-19 polymerase chain reaction test can not obtain fresh passports or compromise the NIS officers, adding that the system was automated and cannot be bypassed or manipulated.

Babandede stated, “The public health is a big issue in the country and based on that directives, we have complied by blocking 100 passports from travelling, which means, even if they go to the police and declare those passports missing, they cannot be reissued anywhere in the world and they cannot cross our national borders until the period of six months or communication received from the right authorities stating that they have complied.

“This will also include non-Nigerians; we have the powers to revoke visas, the comptroller-general has the power to revoke visas.

The NIS boss said based on the powers he had and the additional conditions for entering the country, every visitor must have the COVID-19 test result.

He vowed to make travellers comply, noting that the lack of compliance with COVID-19 regulations was a threat to public health.

Babandede said some of the individuals under the travel restrictions have been calling him to seek assistance, adding that he simply asked them to comply with the regulations.

Please comply, immigration has no business with anybody, we are implementing the directives handed down to us. You must have evidence of payment.

“If you do the test, it means you have complied, if you have not done the test, it means you have violated the condition of entering the country; your visa will be revoked,” he cautioned.

  • Police to arraign arraign Deeper Life school officials over alleged sexual abuse

Police to arraign arraign Deeper Life school officials over alleged sexual abuse

Nigeria Police Force in Akwa Ibom is set to arraign Deeper Life school officials over alleged bullying and sexual abuse of a minor, Premium Times reported on Wednesday.

According to PremiumTimes, David Okokon, lawyer to the parents of the abused 11-year-old student of the school said he would be in court today for the arraignment.

“They (the police) are arraigning those people found culpable, this morning,” Okokon said.

Trouble began when the victim’s mother, Deborah Archibong, alleged that some senior students of the Deeper Life High School sexually abused her son when the school authorities switched him from his dormitory to another dormitory filled with senior students.

“They will remove his boxer and push their legs and hands into his anus,” Archibong said in a video posted on Facebook.

“Look at a child I sent to school, he came back with a broken anus,” she said, adding that her son was frequently starved and beaten up by the senior students.

We will like to state that Deeper Life High School stands on the core values of integrity and uprightness and will not attempt to cover up any immoral act under any guise,” Thelma Malaka, the school’s education secretary, who spoke through a video uploaded on Twitter, said of the sexual abuse allegation.

“We have unflinching confidence in our God to resolve the issue such that at the end the truth will ultimately prevail,” she said.

The school said it has suspended the school’s principal.

Also, the state police authorities have since invited some of the school officials for questioning while some were detained.

Okokon said the family is demanding a fee of N100M damages from the school within 21 days for medical treatment and other expenses for the victim.

Okokon further stated that failure to pay within the stipulated time would make the school liable to pay N1.5bn as damages.
