    Two bandits gundown in Nasarawa

The Defence Headquarters says the troops of Operation Whirl Stroke and 177 Battalion on Wednesday killed two bandits in a raid on their hideout at Angwan Mada in Nasarawa State.

The Coordinator, Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. John Enenche, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday in Abuja.

He said the operation also resulted in the recovery of 20 locally made rifles and other ammunition.

According to him, the troops adopted an aggressive posture and tactfully assaulted the hideout, taking the bandits by surprise.

“The gallant troops overwhelmed the bandits with effective fire and neutralised two of the criminals responsible for kidnappings and other crimes in the general area while others fled in disarray with fatal gunshot wounds.

“A follow-up exploitation of the camp and environs further resulted in the recovery of a total of 20 locally made rifles, 40 empty cases of 7.62mm special ammunition and 5 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition.

“Troops thereafter destroyed the camp,” he said.

  • Presidency denounced PDP for “twisting” a 2015 tweet by Vice President

Presidency denounced PDP for “twisting” a 2015 tweet by Vice President

Femi Ojudu, Special Adviser on Political Matters to President Muhammad Buhari, has denounced the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for “twisting” a 2015 tweet by Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo.

Ojudu, in a statement, also condemned the calls on President Muhammadu Buhari to resign.

A release by Kingsley Chinda, on behalf of the PDP caucus in the House of Representatives, had urged constituents to compel their lawmakers to commence impeachment process against the President.

Ojudu described the PDP comment about Osinbajo as mischief.

He recalled that as vice presidential candidate of the APC, Osinbajo tweeted at a time when Nigeria was facing one of its darkest periods due to incessant terrorist attacks in some parts of the country, including the FCT.

“In fact, at the time the tweet was done on February 8, 2015, the then Federal Government had said it could not guarantee the security in parts of the country for the election to hold and actually elections were postponed because of that stance of the Jonathan Presidency.”

Ojudu lamented that the opposition had disingenuously twisted it out of context even insinuating as though it was a recent tweet.

The presidential aide clarified that Osinbajo never said such in relation to Buhari.

He stressed that Buhari never admitted that he had lost the capacity to guarantee the security of lives and property.

“As the president noted concerning the senseless murder of hardworking farmers in November by terrorists in Zabarmari community in Jere Local Government Area of Borno State, the Nigerian Armed Forces will continue to be given all the needed support to take all necessary steps to protect the country’s population and its territory.”

Ojudu told Nigerians to ignore the misrepresentation and misleading narrative by the PDP House of Representative Caucus.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain added that it was meant to cause disaffection.

El-rufai, has threatened to impose a second lockdown over fresh wave of virus in Kaduna

Governor Nasir El-rufai, has expressed concern over the rising cases of COVID-19 infections in the state and threatened to impose a second lockdown in the entire State if the rate of infections continues to rise.

El-Rufai said that he was worried that the rate of infections will soon overwhelm the state’s health system if nothing is done urgently to contain the spread of the virus.

Kaduna State has so far recorded 30 percent new COVID-19 infections daily in the last two months.

The Governor lamented that some residents have refused to abide by all the safety measures put in place by the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

He hinted that if the present trend continues, there might be another lockdown soon.

The Governor directed that all employees of the state government must undergo a mandatory COVID-19 test as part of efforts to contain the spread of the virus in the state.

Ahead of the Christmas festivities, the Governor warned residents to celebrate with caution, by avoiding large gatherings, wearing their face masks always, and adhering to other safety measures that would prevent them from contracting COVID-19 during and after the festivities.

  • ASUU denied reaching agreement with FG to suspend ongoing strike

ASUU denied reaching agreement with FG to suspend ongoing strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has denied that it reached an agreement with the federal government to suspend its ongoing strike on December 9, 2020.

The Union insisted that contrary to insinuation to that effect, there was never an understanding with the government that it would suspend the over nine months old strike on the said date.

President of ASUU, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, in a statement made available to journalists Wednesday night, said ASUU representatives do not have the powers to suspend or call off industrial action but must follow due process which includes transmitting the outcome of negotiations to members and National Executive Council (NEC) of ASUU for further deliberations and actions.

While noting that ASUU was willing to cooperate with concerned authorities to ensure suspension of the strike once the welfare and wellbeing of ASUU members and survival of public universities were sufficiently guaranteed, he said It was a needless crisis which had happened because the government consistently failed to implement the agreements it freely signed with the Union faithfully.

He said, “The leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has been inundated with enquiries on why the ongoing strike action has not been suspended.

“This was a sequel to the widely reported claims by some government agents that all the demands of ASUU have been met and that the Union agreed to suspend the strike action today, December 9 2020. Nothing can be farther from the truth!

“To put the records straight, the Principal Officers and Trustees who constitute the core of representatives of ASUU at negotiation meetings with the government are not constitutionally empowered to suspend any strike action. Whatever comes out of an engagement with agents of the government is an offer that must be taken back to the branches through the various organs of the Union.

“Views and perspectives on offers by governments are aggregated and presented to government agents as counter-offers. This trade union strategy of offer and counter-offer is continually deployed until the National Executive Council (NEC) of ASUU – consisting of all recognised chairpersons – finally approves what it considers an acceptable offer from the government. It is only then that any strike action by ASUU can be suspended.

“The ASUU leadership did not reach any understanding with the government to suspend the strike on December 9, 2020, and there is nothing in the government offer of November 27, 2020, to suggest that conclusion as allegedly claimed by the Minister of Labour and Employment.

“The leadership of ASUU has consistently stated at every meeting with high ranking government officials that the union’s representatives have no mandate to take the final decision on any strike action by the union.”

  • UK hospital first to use AI cancer treatment tool

UK hospital first to use AI cancer treatment tool

The pioneering treatment from Project InnerEye, which could relieve the UK’s cancer treatment backlog, is being offered for free at Addenbrooke’s hospital in Cambridge, UK.Microsoft, Cambridge, AI

Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge is set to be the first hospital in the world to use InnerEye, an AI deep-learning tool from Microsoft Research Cambridge that accelerates the treatment of cancer patients. The technology computes hospital data to accurately identify tumours on patient scans, cutting CT processing times and treatment planning by up to 90%.

The toolkit could potentially reduce the waiting time for cancer treatment that has built up over the pandemic without compromising on the quality of care. Microsoft has also made the InnerEye software opensource and freely available in order to democratise care and ensure that as many people as possible can benefit from the tool.

    WHY IT MATTERS

When performed manually, a clinical oncologist or specialised technician must segment CT images obtained during a screening individually in a process called contouring. The medical professional outlines what are tumours and what are healthy organs on the scan, a process that can take several hours. The InnerEye toolkit processes these images 13 times faster than when done manually, utilising the hospital’s own data to improve accuracy and presenting the data to be carefully checked by the consultant oncologist.

Up to half of people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their life. According to Cancer Research, the pandemic has meant an estimated three million people in the UK have missed out on cancer screenings due to hospital restrictions, creating a severe backlog of patients waiting for treatment. The InnerEye toolkit, which is hosted securely on Microsoft’s Azure cloud, enables clinicians to spend more time with more patients whilst ensuring their treatment plans are tailored to them individually.

    THE LARGER PICTURE

AI and deep learning are becoming a growing presence in digital care in the UK, with the government recently announcing a £20 million injection of funds into AI research.

    ON THE RECORD

Dr Rajesh Jena, an oncologist at Addenbrooke’s and co-lead of InnerEye, said: “The results from InnerEye are a game-changer. To be diagnosed with a tumour of any kind is an incredibly traumatic experience for patients. So as clinicians we want to start radiotherapy promptly to improve survival rates and reduce anxiety. Using machine learning tools can save time for busy clinicians and help get our patients into treatment as quickly as possible.”

“There is no doubt that InnerEye is saving me time,” said Yvonne Rimmer, consultant clinical oncologist at Addenbrooke’s. “It’s speeding up the process so I can concentrate on looking at a patient’s diagnostic images and tailoring treatment to them. But it’s important for patients to know that the AI is helping me in my professional role; it’s not replacing me in the process. I double check everything the AI does and can change it if I need to. The key thing is that most of the time, I don’t need to change anything.”

Javier Alvarez-Valle, principal research manager at Microsoft Research Cambridge, said: “AI models trained with InnerEye are changing the way cancer is treated, speeding up the process to give patients greater peace of mind and empowering clinical oncologists with an AI assistant. The AI works in the background, so clinical oncologists just open up the scans on their computer and they can see what their AI model has highlighted. The clinical oncologist then decides what to do with that information.”

Rev. Hedima, who’s opinion was corroborated by Pastor John ….Akor and a Catholic Priest, said that marriage project should not be seen as something one should jump into, saying if you jump into marriage, you’ll likely jump out of it, also stressing that most couples only think and concern themselves with the wedding instead of marriage life.

The Christian leaders who could not hide their feelings conceded that there’s need for the couples to asked all contending questions during the relationship in form of character temperament, when one is financially broke, sex satisfaction (erection) among others, which they said constituted the vast majority of problems mostly responsible for the divorce and broken homes among couples, as held during marriage counselling.

Accordingly, Father and mother’s roles and limitations and relationship between daughters, son at certain age were analysed, and resolutions arrived that there should be limit in their relationship, especially father, daughters, brother and uncles.

Earlier, the organiser and founder of the Foundation, Mrs. Talatu Zamani said

working with SGBV over the years made her to realized that these issues have been of serious concerned.

The founder said she decided to gather stakeholders like religious and traditional leaders realizing that they’ve very important and played major roles in resolving the problem especially the rampant cases of divorce.

Mrs Zamani also said she noticed with dismay, the high rate of rape, defilement of children, domestic violence against women, divorce among other vices, were becoming alarming in the society and therefore decided to bring the stakeholders in a dialogue session to discussed and find lasting solution to reduced, prevent and to respond to the problem.

She stressed the need to look at the marriage counselling in the church, noting that a lot of couples don’t undertake counselling before marriage proper.
