Bandits forced us to flee to Niger Republic to seek refuge – Sokoto famers

Some farmers who fled the Gudu and Tangaza local government areas of Sokoto State to seek refuge in Niger Republic, have narrated how constant attacks and invasion of their communities by bandits forced them to flee to Niger Republic to seek refuge.

Speaking to the BBC Hausa service on Monday, December 7, the farmers said the bandits would raid towns in the night and force them to pay huge sums of money or identify the rich among them to kidnap.

One of the returnees who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said many of them now spend the nights in Niger Republic and return in the morning.

“The situation we find ourselves in the villages of Gudu and Tangaza local governments is indeed terrible.

“Every night, bandits will visit our villages with guns, going from house to house. If you don’t have money to give them, they will force you to show them a rich man in the village for them to kidnap.

“Even on Sunday, they kidnapped two people, and they are yet to release them since they have not paid ransom,” he said.

  • Calls for Buhari’s impeachment by Hon. Chinda a lone voice says Kalu

Calls for Buhari’s impeachment by Hon. Chinda a lone voice says Kalu

    Doris Ferdinand

The house of Representatives spokesperson, Hon. Benjamin Kalu has described the call for the impeachment of the president by Hon Chinda as a lone voyage.

Kalu disclosed this in a press statement where he said that the call for the President’s impeachment by Hon Chinda is his personal opinion and does not represent the voice of the entire members of the , House of Representatives.

    The statement reads in part:

“The attention of the House of Representatives and her leadership has been drawn to the press release by Hon Kingsley Chinda, titled “ Nigeria saddled with the circus” circulated over most dailies on the 6th of December , 2020, where he called on constituents irrespective of political party, tribe or religion to compel their representatives to commence impeachment process against the president .

“This opinion of a single member of the opposition party in the house has been misinterpreted by journalists as the voice of the entire House of Representatives when it does not represent the weakest opinion of the minority-caucus of the 9th House . Even among the minority caucus , Hon Kingsley Chinda lost the opportunity to speak for the entire minority when he lost the minority leadership election to Hon Ndudi Elumelu the minority leader of the 9th Assembly, a wound that has refused to heal.

“It is the structure of the minority caucus leadership and majority caucus leadership that is recognised by the house as any statement not emanating from these and the spokesperson of the house does not in any way reflect either the minority , majority or general position of the 9th House of Representatives and should be disregarded like his other divisive , distracting, destabilising and destructive positions . Just last week the speaker warned the media to desist from ascribing to the house the opinion of a single member , since we have a spokesperson.

“The motive behind this press release as well as the timing leaves a bitter taste in the mouth of most progressives who were instructed by their constituents to request for an interaction with the president , a task many thought was not possible seeing that in the history of our Modern democracy none of the past presidents obliged the parliamentary request for an interactive session and none of the past leaderships of the assembly was able to use parliamentary back channel diplomacy, adopted and applied by the current leadership to secure the acceptance of Mr President to this invitation. An outing that has strengthened our democratic principles .

“If this call came post President’s visit for the failure to dialogue well enough in securing solutions or due to his inability to put our positions to use , it would appear logical . This call is not only illogical , It appears as a tool strategically thrown up to disrupt the agenda of the coming visit with all it sets out to achieve in the spirit of nation building which remains the mantra of the 9th Assembly and is considered a joint task .

“In the view of the 9th Assembly , it would remain a call made wrongfully to distract the members whose minds are set on the visit and the expected achievements . It is surprising, that Hon Kingsley Chinda, was among those who insisted on the invitation of the president , probably expecting a gross disregard from the president who surprisingly broke the jinx and kindly obliged our request . Isn’t it obvious that apparently shocked by the acceptance of Mr. President, he is on a new lonely voyage of personal agenda strange to the legislative agenda of the house and leadership . Where was his constitutional impeachment voice when his previous presidents of PDP extractions were invited but ignored the house , wondering why he is just remembering his constitution now that a president is coming to accept our inputs to the solutions he is seeking”. He said.

Kalu therefore urge Nigerians to be patient and await the outcome of the meeting with the President and not to allow hemselves to be mislead by an opinion that does not speak for the entire house.

“I therefore, assure Nigerians that having asked us to invite Mr President , which we have done , you should be patient to wait for the outcome of our meeting, before been misled by a alone voice on the frolic of his own, whose private opinion in no way represents the position of the House of Representatives.

“We have only invited Mr. President for an interactive session and cannot be distracted by those with other self not house motivated agenda.” Kalu added.

  • Gov Zulum, says Buhari has done well in handling the insecurity situation in the North-East

Gov Zulum, says Buhari has done well in handling the insecurity situation in the North-East

The Governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Zulum, says that President Muhammadu Buhari has done pretty well in handling the insecurity situation in the North-East despite the killings by Boko Haram and bandits who have continued to make the region uncomfortable for residents.

Zulum said this while addressing elders of the (ACF), in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, on Monday, December 7.

A delegation of the ACF led by head of the board of trustees, Shehu Malami, and the Chairman, Audu Ogbeh, were in the state to commiserate with Zulum and the people over the massacre of rice farmers in the Zabarmari community of Jere local government area of the state.

While addressing the delegates, Zulum said:

“From statewide statistics on affairs in the 27 local government areas since 2011, the fact is that despite the recent happenings, the security situation in Borno and indeed that of the entire North-East sub-region is still far better under Buhari.

“Unlike the years before Buhari when a number of local governments were no-go-areas, we now have citizens led by our traditional rulers, safely back to Bama, Gwoza, Askira-Uba, Dikwa, Ngala, Monguno, Kukawa, Damboa, Konduga, Mafa, all of which no one could visit not talk of living in before.

“Our Emirs were all in exile. Today, Bama is coming back to life and so is Askira-Uba, Damboa, Gwoza and others. Life is returning to Baga. This was impossible before Buhari. It was not possible to move a few kilometres out of Maiduguri.

“Insurgents attacked and took over the Army Barracks at Monguno, Bama, Giwa Barracks and Multinational Joint Task Force Headquarters at Baga, to mention just a few. There were daily attacks and bomb blasts in many parts of Maiduguri but all of these have stopped under Buhari. No one can dispute these records.”

Zulum ended by saying that the Boko Haram insurgents have now resorted to propaganda and attracting publicity and that the people of his state will remain optimistic and keep doing their part in efforts to find sustainable peace.

FCT in panic as youths take to streets second wave of #EndSARS protests

There was anxiety in the federal capital territory in Abuja as scores of youths turned out in their numbers to partake in the second wave of #EndSARS protests which started today, Dec 7.

Reports say the streets of Abuja experienced a surprising turnout of youths despite police warnings against staging another #EndSARS protest to prevent hoodlums from hijacking the demonstrations.

In a related development, there was reported tension in Calabar, Cross River State capital as security operatives including Nigeria Soldiers, Police and Civil Defence stormed the streets, manning strategic locations in the state to prevent a second wave of #EndSARS protests in the state.

Reports say security operatives have been deployed to Marian Road, Freedom Park, eleven-eleven roundabout along Calabar Road, government establishments and other places suspected to be flashpoints of attacks in the event that the second wave of #EndSARS protests is hijacked.

The deployment of security operatives was confirmed on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer in the State, DSP Irene Ugbo who said the move was to tame hoodlums who are planning to invade the state under the name of #EndSARS protest.

  • ASUU Strike: New NANS, President assures Nigerian students

ASUU Strike: New NANS, President assures Nigerian students

The National Association of Nigerian Students on Monday said it would engage the Federal Government and Academic Staff Union of Universities with a view to prevailing on them to end the nine-month-old strike embarked on by the university lecturers.

The organisation described the strike as “ridiculous” but expressed optimism that its consultation with both parties would yield a positive result.

The new President of NANS, Sunday Asefon, stated these in Abuja during his maiden press conference which came after his electoral victory.

According to him, NANS under his administration would fight against arbitrary expulsion, suspension, and rustication of students for dissent and peaceful protest.

Asefon said, “Again, I assure Nigerian students of my resolve to do all within my abilities to protect our interests, place the interest and welfare of Nigerian students above all considerations and reposition our association to take its rightful place in the centre of our nation’s polity.

“To this end, I will immediately set out to engage stakeholders within the educational sector to add our strong voice against the overstayed ASUU strike. We will be consulting with the representatives of the Federal Government and ASUU with the aim of prevailing on them to find a centre point for amicable resolution to ensure we return to school.

“The engagement is going to be now and not later. ASUU strike started before the COVID-19 pandemic. We are convinced that this high-level consultation will yield a positive result and we will not have to resort to mobilising students to mount any protest to this ridiculous long stay at home. NANS under our watch, will not be complicit to such unending strike and never again will Nigerian students have to stay home this long.”

NANS also distanced itself from the second phase of the #EndSARS protests. “We are not going to be part of any protest that doesn’t have leadership. We are not part of #RevolutionNow,” Asefon stated.
