Special Report: Nigerians express mixed feelings towards COVID-19 vaccine jab

Many Nigerians express scepticism over covid-19 vaccines

Others believe vaccine is a scam

    By Joyce Remi-Babayeju

Following the arrival of the AstraZeneca COVId-19 vaccines into the country on Tuesday 2 March 2021, and the subsequent launch of the T.E.A.C.H strategy campaign by the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, NPHCDA, the majority of Nigerians in the priority group have expressed mixed feelings towards getting the vaccines jab.

The majority have expressed worry about why the Federal Government is “wasting” money on the importation of huge vaccines which many will eventually reject. Others just dismiss the vaccines as a subtle scam.

In a random interview carried out by Daybreak after the arrival of the vaccine in Abuja, the majority of Nigerians who spoke with our correspondent said that they do not trust the chemical components and potency of the vaccine and that rather government should harness the homegrown herbs as an alternative to foreign vaccines.

Apostle Adewale Adelekan, an indigene of Ogun State said, ” Importation of millions of doses of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine into the country by the Federal Government is a welcome development to curtail the fears of the pandemic, but I do not support the use of vaccines from foreign countries to cure people with COVID-19 in Nigeria.

As an individual, I will never take the vaccine jab because I do not trust the chemical components of the vaccine.

Adelekan argued that Nigeria is blessed with natural herbs and the manpower to manufacture effective vaccines to cure COVID-19, adding that the elites are behind the Importation of the vaccine.

The Apostle emphasized his belief in local herbs for effective cure of every kind of ailments and diseases including the COVID-19 which he said the West has to turn into global propaganda.

A housewife, Mrs Fatima Yahaha is also of the opinion that she will never get the vaccine jab because she does not believe in it.  “It is fake.’

There are reports of fake vaccines already in circulation before the government imported their own, so what is the difference with this one? she asked.

“We have natural herbs in Nigeria to cure Coronavirus and every other disease. What they are calling COVID-19 is just malaria plus Typhoid which has long been in our clime, adding that government ought to educate  citizens on the chemical components of the vaccine before they will accept it.”

I  shall not be injected with what I am not sure of, she said.

Yahaya like many Nigerians still does not believe in the escalating COVID-19 figures churned out by NCDC daily.

According to her, the daily escalating figures announced every day is also fake.

Miss Ogechi Ndukpo, a Masters Degree student at the University of Abuja, told Daybreak that she is still sceptical about receiving the  COVID-19 vaccine jab because she is not sure that it is safe, due to the hasty manner in which the vaccines were manufactured and imported into Nigeria without subjecting it to thorough clinical tests.

“For these reasons, I will not take the vaccine” she said. “I feel we should continue with our local herbs because it works well with my body system”.

“Although the  AstraZeneca vaccines are WHO certified, as an individual I prefer the use of our local herbs to cure any form of fever, be it malaria, typhoid or COVID.”

She asserted, ” I am not alone in this non-compliance decision of  COVID-19 rejection because I have heard other people from different quarters say they would not take the vaccine because of the likely repercussions and adverse reaction.”

I don’t want to take anything that would be detrimental to my health, she concluded.

However Ndukpo reasoned that one condition for her to get the jab is if there is evidence of anyone who has gotten the vaccine without any reaction to it. “But for now, I rely on local herbs for my ailments”. She said.

Daybreak further sampled the opinion of the educated class but their opinion was no difference as many expressed fears of adverse reactions.

A Lecturer at one of the higher institutions who declined being mentioned in this report said that over his dead body would he get the vaccine.

According to him, ” COVID-19 is not real in Nigeria or even in Africa because of our hot climate, adding that the vaccines are likely to cause an adverse reaction on persons who take it.

All we have here is malaria and typhoid which many people here usually have and they get treated with our local herbs and some with malarial drugs, this CoVID-19 is just malaria which the West is blowing out of proportion because it is alien to them. Now they are forcing vaccines on us, he said.

A retired Civil Servant, Elder Abali Uzoma was of a contrary opinion resident in Karu, suburban of Abuja.  He said that if the vaccine is truly certified by the food and drug agency, NAFDAC, then it is necessary for all Nigerians especially those in the priority group get vaccinated to prevent COVID-19 from the country.

He said that as someone in the priority group he would subject himself to vaccination for the prevention of the virus.

” I know that vaccines are good and safe to prevent diseases, so I will subject myself to be vaccinated with the COVID-19 vaccine which the Federal Government imported into the country.”

The Nigerian government had taken delivery of 3.92 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine on Tuesday, 2 March 2021 making the country the third West African country to benefit from the COVAX Facility after Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire.

The National Primary Health Care Development Agency, NPHCDA, Executive Director Dr. Faisal Shuaib said it would commence the vaccination of Nigerians in priority groups, starting with frontline healthcare workers.

Shuaib had assured Nigerians that the agency has commenced the training of health workers and ensured that cold chain facilities are ready at all levels.

We have a robust cold chain system that can store all types of COVID-19 vaccine in accordance with the required temperature.

We are therefore confident that we will have a very effective roll-out of the vaccine, starting with our critical healthcare workers, who are in the frontline in providing the care we all need,” Dr Shuaib added.

The government said it plans to vaccinate at least 70 per cent of eligible Nigerians aged 18 years and above in four phases within two years.

The majority of Nigerians still do not believe there is COVID-19 in the country while for others government needs to convince them about the potency of the AstraZeneca vaccine before accepting it.

In midnight head count gov Zulum discovers 650 fake IDP households

    From Dauda R PamMaidugri

Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno state has undertaken a midnight headcount at Mohammed Goni College of Islamic Legal Studies, housing IDPs from the Abadam local government area of northern Borno.

Immediately on arrival, the Governor reportedly sealed the entrance of the college and supervised a headcount to identify the actual number of IDPs to put a stop to rampant cases of dubious residents who spend day times at IDP camps to share in the food items for IDPs and at night return to their homes.

This was contained in a statement issued by the S.A media, Mallam Isa Gusau and made available to the media.

According to the statement, Governor Zulum’s mission, which ended at about 1:00 am, discovered that out of the 1,000 households in the records of humanitarian officials, 650 households were ghosts while 450 households were found to be the real IDPs in the camp.

Accompanied by  NEMA official, Air Commodore MT Abdullahi, two commissioners assisted the GOVERNOR to conduct the midnight census.

He said in a humanitarian set up a household would normally consist of at least six persons, who are either related through families or chosen to stay together for the purpose of receiving household aids.

Officials who were part of the midnight headcount said Governor Zulum was not averse to approving support for any citizen who may be vulnerably in need of food since there is a committee doing that, however, the Governor is vehemently opposed to some residents making dubious claims in order to take what is meant for IDPs as well as benefiting from other existing welfare packages targetted at non IDPs.

Captain Yadudu said they have been communicating and working with security agencies and the State Government and have gathered some information that would assist them to handle the matter.

According to him, a risk assessment of a similar attack on its staff last year from what was gathered from their investigation had helped them to come up with a robust strategy to counter such challenges.

“We have already beefed security since last year, it is not something new now, we have our own means of communication in countering this challenges, a lot have been averted with what we have done, it is not something you know. right now an investigation is ongoing”, he said

The FAAN boss stressed that if there was a need for them to close the Kaduna airport due to the incident, they would do so but the recent attack does not warrant that, as the FAAN quarters is far away from the airport

“We have taken appropriate measures, we just need to now improve to counter these evolving challenges. The fence was broken, we have security personnel attending to the area but somehow somewhere things happen and now it is for us to counter, it is a risk, security challenges always come, they evolve and they improve and on our own part we keep improving”.

He assured that the security architecture of the airport would continue to be improved upon with the support of security agencies and the state government”, he stated.

“Google will give you more insight into the validity and confirmation of our findings.

While he also emphasized that the existence of the Akassa Seaport as a Minor Port Station in Bekekiri, Brass LGAs of Bayelsa State of Nigeria, is not in doubt, he strongly appealed to the relevant ministries and Agency to use their good offices to support the reopening of Akassa Seaport.

  • Arrest, prosecute Sheikh Gumi now-HURIWA

The Human Rights Writers Association of NIgeria(HURIWA) has warned the federal government against open, biased and selective justice manifested in the persistent refusal and failure of President Muhammadu Buhari and his federal government to arrest and bring to trial Kaduna based controversial Islamic Cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi,  for aiding  and abetting terrorism in Nigeria.

The Rights group said the President Muhammadu Buhari has not done much to ensure that the TERROR GANGSTERS that kidnapped school children in Zamfara, Katsina and Niger State’s are arrested even as the Rights group said the measures against terrorists in the North West as announced by the National Security Adviser Major General Monguno (rtd) on behalf of President Muhammadu Buhari is COSMETIC and deceptive and would do no harm to the armed terrorists who are tolerated by the federal government to roam about in the forests armed to their teeth.

HURIWA has also called for the declaration of the armed abductors (known as Fulani militia) of school children in Katsina, Zamfara and Niger State as terror groups and arrest and prosecute them for the serial kidnappings of school children and punish them if we ever hope to have closure to the incessant invasions of schools by terrorists.

In a statement by the National Coordinator Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko and the National Media Affairs Director Miss Zainab Yusuf, HUMAN RIGHTS WRITERS ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA (HURIWA) affirmed thus: “Here is why GUMI MUST BE ARRESTED AND PROSECUTED-:ACCORDING TO TERRORISM (PREVENTION) ACT, 2011 Section 4(1) A person who knowingly, in any manner, solicits or renders support for. – (a) an act of terrorism; or

    (b) A proscribed organisation or an internationally suspected terrorist group. An offence under this Act and shall on conviction be liable to imprisonment for a maximum term of 20 years.

    (2) Without prejudice to subsection (2) of this section, where death results from any terrorist act the penalty shall he death sentence:

    (3) For the purposes of subsection (I) of this section, “support” includes.

    (a) Incitement to commit a terrorist act;

    (b) Offer of material assistance, weapons, including biological, chemical or nuclear weapons, explosives, training. Transportation, false documentation or identification;

    (c) Offer or provision of moral assistance, including invitation to adhere to a proscribed organization; and

    (d) The provision of, or making available, such financial or other related services as may be prescribed in this act.”

HURIWA stated that specifically, Section 5 of the nation’s anti terrorism law says: “A person whether or not in the armed services who harbours, conceals or causes to be harboured or concealed, a person whom he knew to have committed, or to have been convicted of an act of terrorism or against whom he knew that a warrant of arrest or imprisonment for such an act had been issued commits an offence under that Act and shall on conviction be liable to imprisonment for a maximum term of 10 years. Section 6 states thus: “Any person who, knowingly agrees to provide training or instruction –

    (a) in the making or use of an)’ explosive or other lethal device; or

    (b) In carrying out [l terrorist act:

to a member of a terrorist group or a person engaging in, or preparing 10 engage in the commission of a terrorist act, commits an offence and shall on conviction, be liable to imprisonment for a maximum term of 10 years.”

HURIWA has also lamented that the Senator Ahmed Lawan led National Assembly has gone into complete comatose hence it has refused to investigate the persistent confessions by the armed terrorists in the North West that their members were supplied with weapons by government just as the newspapers reported that one of the leaders of the armed terrorists personally accused President Muhammadu Buhari of abandoning them soon after he won election and asked him to personally meet with them for a truce talk. The Rights group said the current leadership of the National Assembly will regret their acts of cowardice and compromise soon because the citizens will sooner than later demand the dissolution of the two chambers national Assembly which is expensive but largely made up of ‘house BOYS’ of the PRESIDENT.

HURIWA said: ” There have been many earthshaking revelations made by the leaders of the different armed Fulani invading terror networks in the North West which in summary accuses the Federal government of arming the terrorists before the 2019 polls and then abandoning them soon after the election was over.”

“Why is the National Assembly playing deaf and dumb to these stunning revelations? The failure of the National Assembly headed by surrogates and bootlickers of President Muhammadu Buhari to probe these accusations made by terrorists against the President Muhammadu Buhari,  is against the spirit and letter of Section 4 of the Constitutional provisions contained in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria of 1999(as amended) as stated in the following subsections-: “(1) The legislative powers of the Federal Republic of Nigeria shall be vested in a National Assembly for the Federation, which shall consist of a Senate and a House of Representatives.

    (2) The National Assembly shall have power to make laws for the peace, order and good government of the Federation or any part thereof with respect to any matter included in the Exclusive Legislative List set out in Part I of the Second Schedule to this Constitution.

    (3) The power of the National Assembly to make laws for the peace, order and good government of the Federation with respect to any matter included in the Exclusive Legislative List shall, save as otherwise provided in this Constitution, be to the exclusion of the Houses of Assembly of States.”

HURIWA BLAMES both the National Assembly and President Muhammadu Buhari for refusing to arrest, prosecute Ahmad GUMI for frustrating the enforcement of the anti terror Act of the Federal Republic of Nigeria by acting as the envoy of armed terrorists who are terrorizing the North just as the Rights Advocacy group said it was treasonous for Ahmed GUMI to encourage armed terrorists to attack members of the armed forces because he clearly told them that the Christian members of the armed forces were the operatives responsible for the military actions they faced in the past and just few days after the Kaduna Cleric made the reckless statement the military jet with only Christian crew members crashed in Abuja and all the crew members died and few days ago a number of soldiers are feared dead after an attack on a military base in Katsina State.

HURIWA specifically quoted the media as reporting that the armed terrorists stormed an outpost in Marina, Safana Local Government Area on Thursday.

The troops, according to Daily Trust, were returning from an operation when they moved into an ambush.

The bandits caught the soldiers unaware; they hid near the base and opened fire from different directions.

HURIWA also recalled that the Daily Trust was quoted as reporting that one Halilu Sububu, a bandit leader, listed Katsina as one of the states gangs terrorize. Others are Zamfara, Niger, Kaduna and Sokoto.

Sububu linked attacks to a breach of agreement and urged President Muhammadu Buhari to personally visit them for a chat.”

HURIWA cited the media report as stating thus: “It (agreement) has been breached. An agreement was reached but you left that person in a forest with a gun and nothing to substitute. All the promises made to us, none of it was fulfilled. The President should personally come and preside over the talks. When was campaigning, he traveled all over, why would he not do it now? He does not take these peace talks seriously, and everyday people are being killed”.

The Rights group said the failure of the National Assembly to investigate these monumental allegations against the Federal government for arming the terrorists as alleged is the reason terrorists have continued to launch their attacks including the invasion of the Federal Airport located in Kaduna in which scores of staff and their family members were abducted by the invading terrorists who are being appeased by the Federal government of President Muhammadu Buhari.

HURIWA has stated that because the National Assembly has failed to investigate these claims, the Civil Rights movement in Nigeria will definitely send petitions to major embassies in Nigeria to call their attention to these allegations and to demand international investigative action by the relevant global bodies such as the United Nations, the United States Congress and the European Union commission.

Obaseki, Oshiomhole Meet Publicly For The First Time Since After Edo Polls

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki at the weekend maintained that he has no personal grudges against his predecessor and former chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, but only dislikes his style of politics, Igbere TV reports.

Obaseki disclosed this to journalists in Auchi, Etsako-West Local Government Area of the state, at the Centenary Birthday Thanksgiving of Msgr. Thomas Oleghe and 18th Canonical Erection Anniversary of the Diocese of Auchi held at Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Auchi.

Obaseki, who exchanged greetings with an elbow-bump in compliance with COVID-19 preventive protocols, with his predecessor, said they are both sons of Edo with interest of the state at heart.

The governor said: “I don’t have anything personal against Oshiomhole. I may not like his politics, but he has not done anything personal against me. We all are interacting with the interest of the country and the development of our community at heart.”

The governor said the Zonal Congress of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which was scheduled to hold this Saturday, was postponed due to the local government elections taking place in Delta State.

“The Zonal Congress, which was to hold today has been postponed to Tuesday and it’s a normal routine to satisfy the party’s constitution; there is nothing amiss,” he added.

On his part, Oshiomhole, who was a guest at the event, hailed his successor, Governor Obaseki, describing him as ‘his brother and friend.’

Oshiomhole stated: “Once the governor speaks, the matter ends. The governor knows that pensioners here might not be able to do much, that is why he said every other thing required to complete the hostel of the Catholic School of Nursing and Midwifery in Uzairue, his government will do.”
