Bafarawa Allocates ₦1 Billion to New Foundation for Community Welfare

By Muhammad Ibrahim, Sokoto

Dr. Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa, former governor of Sokoto State, has inaugurated the Bafarawa Foundation, pledging ₦1 billion to support the less privileged across the state and nationwide. The foundation’s launch, dubbed “Giving Back,” aims to address social welfare gaps exacerbated by the country’s challenging economic climate.

At the age of 70, Bafarawa expressed a deep commitment to giving back to the people who supported him throughout his political career. He described this effort not as atonement but as reciprocity, aiming to return the goodwill and affection he received during his time in office.

“This act of giving back is more pertinent now than ever, given the harsh economic conditions affecting our people,” Bafarawa said. “I have decided to allocate ₦1 billion for the welfare and well-being of the state’s residents.”

The management of this substantial fund has been entrusted to a committee chaired by Alhaji Lawal Maidoki, known for his integrity and expertise in the distribution of Zakat and Waqf.

During the inauguration, Bafarawa reflected on his previous contributions to the state, particularly in road construction, and reiterated his dedication to supporting the community in these difficult times.

The event also featured speeches from Islamic scholars who emphasized the importance of aiding the less fortunate, citing Qur’anic verses and prophetic traditions to underline their messages.

Jabir Sani Maihulla, the state’s Commissioner for Religious Affairs, highlighted that the welfare and social well-being of Sokoto’s people are central to the governor’s nine-point agenda. He assured continued support for the foundation’s initiatives.

Shuaibu Yusuf Mungadi, representing the Federal Government, praised Bafarawa’s philanthropic effort and promised to present the project’s aims and missions to the President, commending Bafarawa for his vision.

The Bafarawa Foundation aims to make a significant impact by addressing the needs of Sokoto’s residents and improving their quality of life during these challenging times.
