By Isaac Kertyo, Makurdi

The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the killing of two police officers and fifteen villagers by bandits in a renewed attack on the Ayati community in Ukum Local Government Area.

In a press statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Sewuese Anene, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Hassan Steve Yabanet, it was revealed that the recent attack was an attempt by the bandits to resist ongoing police operations in the area.

According to the statement, a large group of armed bandits invaded the village, opening fire on the residents. The police in the area responded swiftly and managed to repel the attackers. However, fifteen villagers had already sustained gunshot wounds and were confirmed dead upon arrival at the hospital. The attack also claimed the lives of two police officers who were part of the team that responded to the distress call.

CP Hassan Steve Yabanet visited the scene for an on-the-spot assessment and expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased. He reassured the community of his commitment to combating criminal activities in the area.

The Commissioner commended the police officers for their prompt response and urged them to remain steadfast in the operation. He also announced that additional teams have been deployed to the area to enhance security and engage the bandits more effectively.
