Bayelsa Deputy Governor Urges Churches to End Rivalry, Focus on Unity

By Amgbare Ekaunkumo, Yenagoa

Bayelsa State Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, has urged Christian leaders to put an end to unhealthy rivalry among denominations and work toward unity in advancing the Gospel.

Speaking on Monday during a courtesy visit by the National Vice President of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), South-South, Archbishop Emmah Isong, at the Government House, Yenagoa, Ewhrudjakpo decried divisive doctrines that threaten the unity of the Christian faith.

He expressed concern over increasing competition among churches, which he said undermines the collective impact of the Gospel in society.

The deputy governor emphasized the need for churches to collaborate on social development initiatives such as poverty alleviation and youth empowerment to demonstrate the practical relevance of Christianity.

“It is rare to hear the undiluted message of salvation from the pulpit nowadays,” he said, calling on Christians to embrace unity to fulfill the Great Commission.

He added that a unified Church, devoid of denominational rivalry, would rekindle the spirit of Pentecost and positively transform society.

Senator Ewhrudjakpo also thanked the PFN for its consistent support for the state administration and assured the delegation of the government’s commitment to supporting their programs and initiatives.

He called on the PFN to intensify prayers for Nigeria’s unity amid ongoing socio-economic challenges, stressing that spiritual solidarity among Christians could inspire national hope and resilience.

The deputy governor pledged to relay the PFN’s requests to Governor Douye Diri for consideration.

In his remarks, Archbishop Emmah Isong described Bayelsa as a stronghold of Christianity in the South-South region. He lauded the state government’s contributions to the Christian community and requested support for the PFN’s 40th anniversary celebration, as well as the construction of its new national secretariat in Abuja.

The PFN delegation expressed readiness to partner with the Bayelsa State Government in advancing shared goals for the good of the Church and the nation.

Other members of the delegation included the Bayelsa State PFN Chairman, Pastor Tam Seth Eyedoude, and other executive members.
