Former Ondo State First Lady, Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, has spoken candidly about her late husband, former Governor Rotimi Akeredolu’s battle with cancer, criticizing the heavy reliance on spiritual interventions instead of medical treatment.
In an exclusive interview with Star News publisher Olumide Akinrinlola on Thursday, Betty expressed regret that her husband prioritized faith-based approaches over medical care, a decision she believes cost him his life.
“What came out of their mountain climbing, blessed handkerchiefs, water, olive oil, and all the noisy prayers like people possessed by demons? If Aketi had listened to me, I wouldn’t be a widow,” she stated.
A breast cancer survivor herself, Betty emphasized that cancer is a medical condition, not a spiritual attack. She recounted how early detection and scientific understanding led her to establish the Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria in 1997.
“You cannot pray away breast cancer or any cancer at all,” she insisted.
On Governance and Politics
Speaking on the current administration in Ondo State under Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, she described it as “rudderless” and raised concerns about a key appointment. She particularly criticized the reinstatement of a former finance commissioner previously dismissed for financial misconduct under her husband’s administration.
“You can connect the dots as to why Lucky brought her back,” she remarked.
Regarding the Federal Government under President Bola Tinubu, Betty was blunt in her assessment. “Only those benefiting would say otherwise. You don’t need a soothsayer to tell you that all is not well in the country,” she said.
She also reaffirmed her senatorial ambition, stating that she remains committed to pursuing her political goals.
A Message on Health and Faith
Offering advice to Nigerians facing serious health conditions, Betty urged them to seek medical treatment rather than relying on faith healers.
“A pastor is not a doctor; he knows nothing about cancer. He can only pray, and prayers don’t cure cancer. Consult a specialist,” she warned.
