Boost for Nigeria as Chidozie Awaziem Returns Ahead of Crucial Gabon Clash

The Super Eagles have received a major boost ahead of their crucial 2026 World Cup playoff against Gabon, as defender Chidozie Awaziem makes a timely return to the squad.

Reports confirm that head coach Eric Chelle has recalled the Nantes defender to strengthen Nigeria’s backline before one of their most important matches in recent years.

The Super Eagles will open camp in Rabat, Morocco, just four days before the November 13 showdown. The fixture is critical, as Nigeria—having missed out on the last World Cup in Qatar—are determined not to suffer another heartbreak.

Nigeria finished second behind South Africa in the qualifiers, forcing them into the playoff round. A commanding 4-0 win over Benin Republic in their final group match secured their passage, as Burkina Faso slipped behind following Eritrea’s withdrawal from the competition—a twist that kept the Super Eagles’ World Cup hopes alive.

The stakes couldn’t be higher. The winner of Nigeria’s clash with Gabon will face either DR Congo or Cameroon just three days later, with the victor advancing to the intercontinental playoff for a ticket to the 2026 World Cup.

Awaziem’s return comes at the perfect time. The versatile defender has been in excellent form for Nantes, impressing both as a centre-back and a right-back. He replaces Ola Aina, who is sidelined with injury, and his inclusion gives coach Chelle valuable options in defence.

With top stars like Victor Osimhen and Moses Simon also in strong club form, confidence is growing within the Nigerian camp.

The Olympic Stadium Sports Complex in Rabat, confirmed by CAF as the match venue, is expected to host a vibrant and competitive encounter, with fans eager to see the Super Eagles soar again.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Football Federation is monitoring new talent, including Michael Kayode, a young Brentford defender. His agent revealed that the player is keen to represent Nigeria despite interest from Italy, signaling a promising future for the Super Eagles’ defence.
