Kanayo O. Kanayo Reacts as Wedding Is Called Off Over N1M Bride Price in Mbaise

    By Abigail Philip David

Veteran Nollywood actor Kanayo O. Kanayo has weighed in on a viral incident from his hometown, Mbaise, Imo State, where a wedding was reportedly called off after the groom’s family was asked to pay a ₦1 million bride price.

A widely shared video captured the frustration of a groom’s family member, who expressed outrage over the high demand, ultimately leading to the cancellation of the wedding. The incident has since sparked discussions about traditional marriage costs in southeastern Nigeria.

    Kanayo Defends Mbaise Tradition

Reacting to the controversy, Kanayo O. Kanayo dismissed claims that Mbaise is notorious for exorbitant bride prices. He clarified that bride price is not fixed and varies across Igbo land, depending on family traditions and the perceived value of the bride.

    He wrote:
“Bride price is relative in Igbo land and varies from family to family. It is also dependent on the value attributed to the girl… It is not peculiar to Ndi Mbaise.”

    Mixed Reactions from Netizens

The incident has sparked diverse reactions online, with many sharing personal experiences about traditional marriage customs across different Igbo communities.

    • @ihazamichael: “I am an Esan man from Edo State, married to a woman from Awka North, Achalla. Before my marriage, I was scared because of the things we see online. But when I started the traditional process, I realized it was easier than marrying from my place. My father-in-law and my wife’s elder brother made everything so easy. I didn’t even spend half of my budget!”
    • @i_am_kingrussell01: “You’re forever blessed, sir. Thanks for setting the record straight.”
    • @francisahamefuna: “Absolutely correct. I am proudly married to an Mbaise woman, and I can relate. Mbaise women are decent, respectful, and contented. They are hardworking and committed to raising God-fearing children. For peace of mind, marry an Mbaise woman.”
    • @darluchechima: “Oga, marrying from Mbaise is something I will never dream of again. The one we did, we have been living with regrets.”
    • @chinasa_ruth_izuchukwu: “What Kanayo said is the truth. Bride price isn’t fixed. They may ask for ₦1 million but end up taking just ₦50, because they are not selling their daughter.”

The debate on bride price and traditional marriage costs in Igbo culture continues to generate conversation, with many emphasizing that the process differs from family to family.

“Peter Put Him in Prison, I’m Here to Get Him Out” – Paul Okoye Speaks on Jude Okoye’s Arrest

    By Abigail Philip David

Nigerian music star Paul Okoye has accused his twin brother, Peter Okoye, of being responsible for the arrest and arraignment of their elder brother, Jude Okoye.

On Wednesday, reports emerged that Jude Okoye, the former manager of Psquare, was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) at the Federal High Court in Ikoyi over an alleged N1.38 billion fraud.

Reacting to the development via his Instagram story, Paul Okoye expressed his support for Jude, claiming that this was what Peter had wanted. He urged his elder brother to stay strong.

On Friday, Paul showed up at the court in Ikoyi to stand by Jude. Speaking to the press, he reiterated his stance, saying, “Peter is the one who put Jude in prison, and I’m here to bring him out.”

Reports from 2023 indicated renewed tensions within Psquare over alleged mismanagement of joint funds by Jude Okoye.

In a past interview, Paul revealed that Peter had him and Jude arrested by the EFCC in December 2023. However, after investigations, he was cleared of all allegations.

Responding to Paul’s claims, Peter Okoye accused his twin brother of siding with Jude to marginalize and humiliate him instead of focusing on reclaiming their top spot in the music industry. He also alleged that Paul had continuously disrespected him, his wife, his family, his talent, and his creative ideas.

  • “I Have Been Broken but Not Destroyed” – Naira Marley Speaks After Court Clears Him in Mohbad’s Death Case

“I Have Been Broken but Not Destroyed” – Naira Marley Speaks After Court Clears Him in Mohbad’s Death Case

    By Abigail Philip David

Nigerian singer Naira Marley has shared an emotional note following a court ruling that declared him not guilty in connection with the death of his former signee, Mohbad.

Taking to social media, Naira Marley expressed his pain and disappointment, stating that he never imagined silence could be so loud or that someone he once called a brother would pass away with his name entangled in the tragedy.

He revealed that he has carried weight, pain, and shame that never belonged to him, emphasizing that while he and his Marlian label weren’t perfect, they had grown, adapted, and made mistakes—but never engaged in a war. He also claimed that before Mohbad’s passing, they had made peace and understood each other beyond their differences.

However, after Mohbad’s untimely death, he lamented that the world immediately turned against him, accusing him of a crime he did not commit.

    In his words:

“I never thought silence could be so loud. I never thought someone I called my brother, someone I protected, would leave this world with my name in his shadow. I have carried this weight, this pain, this shame that was never mine to bear.

We, as Marlians, were not perfect. We had to grow, we had to adapt. Mistakes were made, but they were business wars. I made peace with Mohbad. We understood each other beyond the noise, beyond the misunderstandings. And you know this.

Yet, when he took his last breath in your arms, you looked at the world and pointed at me. You let them tear me apart. You let them call me a killer while you sat there, knowing the truth. Now, you tell the story.

You never thought I would survive. You never thought I would walk through the fire and face my people. Maybe you hoped I would stay a fugitive. You thought I would run. Instead, I stood before the justice system, spent time in jail, and faced everything head-on while you changed the story, again and again.

But God sees all. The truth does not shake. The lies will fade, and time will reveal everything. I have been broken, but I am not destroyed. And when the truth finally speaks, I pray your heart is strong enough to bear it.”

On Tuesday, a Magistrate Court in Yaba, Lagos, cleared Naira Marley, his associate Sam Larry, and Prime Boy of any involvement in Mohbad’s death, stating that they had no case to answer in relation to the singer’s tragic passing.

Following the ruling, Naira Marley took to Twitter and Instagram, sharing verses from the Quran. One of the verses stated that anyone who puts their trust in Allah will find Him sufficient, while another emphasized that though men may conspire, Allah remains the best planner.

The case surrounding Mohbad’s death has been a subject of intense public scrutiny, but with the latest court decision, Naira Marley appears determined to clear his name and move forward.
