U23 AFCON: Olympic Eagles up against Zambia, Cote d’Ivoire, South Africa

    By Mike Oboh

Cup holders Nigeria will battle Cote d’Ivoire, Zambia and South Africa at the group stage of the 3rd U23 Africa Cup of Nations taking place in Egypt next month, following the draw held in Alexandria on Wednesday night. All Group B matches will hold at the Al Salam Stadium in Cairo – one of the venues for last summer’s 32ndAfrica Cup of Nations finals.

Host nation Egypt will be up against Ghana, Cameroon and Mali in a hard-as-nails Group A with matches at the Cairo International Stadium.

A simple but elegant ceremony, with the Montaza Palace at the foreground and the Mediterranean Sea at the background, and rocked by occasional interventions of firecrackers over the sea, was compered by former Egyptian international Ahmed Hosny (now a movie star) and model Lama Gebreil.

Egypt’s Minister for Youth and Sports, Dr. Ashraf Sobhy; CAF Executive Committee Member Ahmed Yahya; Members of the Normalization Committee of the Egyptian FA; Members of the local organizing committee for the U23 AFCON; Egyptian legends Mohamed Barakat and Ahmed Fathi and; representatives of the qualified nations witnessed the event in the 127 –year old Montaza grounds, built by King Farouk, before Gamal Abdel Nasser led a revolution that overthrew the monarchy in 1952 and established constitutional rule.

The draw was conducted by CAF’s Director of Competitions, Samson Adamu who kept it simple yet sophisticated, and former Egyptian international Emad Meteab.

Cup holders Nigeria will play their first game against Cote d’Ivoire, before further matches against Zambia and South Africa in the group stage. Only the top three teams at the tournament will qualify to represent Africa at the men’s football tournament of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Coach of South Africa, David Notone, said : “The truth is that whatever group you fall into would always be tough. We have eight very strong teams here and any team could have fallen anywhere, except Egypt and Nigeria that headed the groups.

“I call Group B a pool of derbies, with two West African teams and two Southern African teams. Group A is the pool of death, no doubt about it. It is going to be fight-to-finish in both groups.”

Former Ghanaian international midfielder Ibrahim Tanko, who is coach of Ghana and whose team shocked bookmakers by defeating Algeria away after both teams drew 1-1 in Ghana in the final qualifying round, said: “Everyone is saying it is tough, but I think it is impressive. This simply means that you have to prepare very hard, play each match like the final and take your chances.

“Any team having illusions of recovering after a false start will be sorely disappointed. I think we are going to have tough, spectacular games all the way in the tournament.

Super Eagles Shirt Now Competitive says Attah

    By Mike Oboh

Former team coordinator of the Super Eagles, Mr. Emmanuel Attah is optimistic that in no distant time the battle for shirts in the team will be similar to that of Brazil national team with the array of youngsters springing up for the team.

Attah who was also the former chairman of the FCT football association, was of the view that the healthy competition for place in the Super Eagles team was a blessing to the nation and urged the handlers of the team to continue with their good works to maximize the benefit.

According to him, the team as is presently constituted is a wonderful side, just as he said that the team that plays Ukraine did their best and if they can keep up with the momentum, before the world cup, “we would have a better team.

“With the abundance of array of stars to pick from, is an advantage for Nigeria, Rohr is doing well, with time we will be like Brazil where stars compete for place in the national team.”

Attah said that if the goalkeepers trainers look inward, getting good goalkeepers for the national team will not pose any problem as there are good number of them in the local scene.

“We should not have any reason for goalkeepers’ worries in the country, we can pick from the crop of goalkeepers in the country, and there are many good keepers in the country, what is needed is for the goalkeeper trainer, Alloy Agu to give the younger ones a great chance, they have the potentials all they need is just exposure, though for me Uzogho is trying we need a good backup,” Attah said.

He further said that it was quite unfortunate that the local premier league is not getting the right touch to push the game up just as he appealed to the Nigeria Football Federation and the League Management Company, to tiding up things for the league to commence.

Attah also called on all stakeholders to join hands for the development of the game in the country, as only a peaceful environment will create a condusive atmosphere for the sport to thrive.

N2.5bn DSO Fraud: Lai’s Court Appearance stalled

    By Mike Oboh

The on-going trial of the Director General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Ishaq Modibbo Kawu, by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) over an alleged abuse of office and money laundering has been stalled by the absence in court of the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed.

According to a statement Mrs. Rasheedat A. Okoduwa, spokesperson for the Commission, Alhaji Mohammed was scheduled to appear before a Federal High Court, Abuja, on October 2, as a prosecution witness to explain his role in the alleged misapplication of N2.5 billion Federal Government Digital Switch-Over (DSO) programme.

ICPC had filed a 12-count charge before Justice Folashade Ogunbanjo-Giwa, against Kawu, Lucky Omoluwa and Dipo Onifade, the Chairman and Chief Operating Officer of Pinnacle Communications Limited respectively,  saying that the NBC director general misled the Minister into approving government funds to a private company.

Mohammed had admitted in a statement to the Commission that he was misled by Kawu, as opined in court by a witness from ICPC, Osanato Olugbemi.

However, at the resumed hearing, counsel to the Commission, Henry Emore informed the court that the Minister was unavoidably absent because of an urgent national assignment.

He said, “I have been in court since 9am. I called the Personal Assistant to the witness and he said that he was unavailable due to an urgent assignment.”

Emore, before asking for a new date to bring the Minister, prayed the court to subpoena a second witness, a Bureau de Change operator, Sabo Shuaibu, who had repeatedly failed to attend court despite numerous invitations put to him.

Justice Ogunbanjo-Giwa granted the subpoena and advised prosecution counsel to be mindful of the five adjournments allowed by the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015, having used up three already.

The trial judge also ordered the release of the international passport of Kawu, to enable him attend the World Radio-Communication Conference (WRC 19) taking place in Egypt.

His counsel, A. U. Mustapha (SAN) had filed an application praying the court to allow the NBC boss to travel to the Sharm El-Sheik venue of the conference scheduled to hold from 28th October to 22nd November, 2019.

The judge further ruled that Kawu’s international passport must be returned to the court Registrar upon his return from Egypt on or before 30th November, 2019.

Kawu was also told to depose to an affidavit before the court stating that his surety must agree to be detained by security agencies if he fails to return for his trial and that the said surety must also surrender his international passport to the court in place of Kawu’s.

The matter was then adjourned to 21st October and 3rd, 4th and 5th December, for continuation of trial.

    Nigerians in Diaspora Commends DSS

    By Mike Oboh

The Forum of Nigerians in Francophone speaking countries in the West and Central African region has commended the Department of State Security in Nigeria for being alive to its responsibilities as an institution focused on the preservation of national security.

The views of the forum were conveyed in a communiqué at the end of her 59th independence anniversary reunion held at Hotel Tahiti Quarter Jak ,  Benin Republic and signed by its president, Dr Isaac Oduma .

The forum expressed abiding faith in the capacity of Nigeria’s security agencies particularly the Department of State Security for its many years of dedicated service delivery to the nation.

“The country is blessed with an outstanding institution in the Department of State Security and above all a committed leadership that is passionate about new reforms and keeping to the objectives of the institution,” the forum stated.

The body commended the sagacity and ingenuity of President Buhari for the supportive roles he has always played as the commander in chief of Nigeria.

The group noted with satisfaction that the country through the DSS has been exceptionally professional in the handling of issues that would otherwise dismember the country if left unattended to.

“ You will recall ladies gentlemen that about a two months ago, some citizens had put it on record to overthrow a legally constituted government in our country Nigeria and also disarm the department of state security” this to my knowledge,  is the most deafening, unpatriotic and unwholesome intention I have ever heard since the return of democracy” and so,  on behalf of the Nigerian people  in the Francophone speaking countries in  West and Central Africa, i must say we are totally satisfied and pleased with the proactive measures utilised by the state security service,” Oduma said.

He noted that without the current proactive approach employed by the agency, no one would have guaranteed the country’s existence today as we celebrate 59 years of independence.

“Our challenges are still much but the road to development is not by virtue of outlawing Society with her laws, conventions and values.

“We have families and investments back home and to think a Nigerian whose family is nationalised in the United States and United Kingdom would contemplate and fund a revolution for parochial interest is not only unfortunate but regrettably repugnant to the values we hold as Nigerians.

“Never in the history of our national existence has a government been overthrown through a forceful means in a democratic setting such as we have today and wondered why any sane mind would initiate or suggest that path just after losing an election,” he said.

The group said as diapora citizens, his group contributes the highest foreign investments back home to enhance the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP) and foreign reserves and therefore could not fold their arms to watch the country go down through illicit means.

The group insisted that the vote of confidence passed on the department of state security and her leadership was borne out of a deep conviction of the majority of the members. It said the decision was made through her 37th resolution in the forum general assembly held in commemoration of the country’s 59 years independence anniversary.

The diaspora forum urged the leadership of other security agencies to emulate and compliment the department of state security despite recurring blackmail and arm twisting by paid media and legal merchants whose interests are first before that of the national security.

  • 5 Things you need to stop to become successful

5 Things you need to stop to become successful

If you want to be successful, it’ll be helpful to give up and let go of these things:

    1. Give up your need to impress others

Stop trying to impress others with your lifestyle. Be yourself, live a happy real life and people will love your realness. Trying to impress people only works against us, people sense inauthenticity and we only make ourselves look insecure and unattractive.

    2. Give up your resistance to change

There are few constants in life and change is not one of them. Change is necessary for self-development; both mentally and physically if you want to live a happy life.

At our work places, change is crucial if you want to get recognition and promotions. You can get quality education to make your CV rich and get the better understanding of the business world. If nothing changed, everything would become stagnant and never improve.

    3. Give up on your fears

Fear is a dangerous intangible thing that can hinder your progress and affect your relationships. There’s no cure for courageousness but if there was a remedy for fear, it is courage. “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself – Roosevelt.”

Replace fear with love and curiosity, and watch yourself grow rich in experience.

    4. Give Up Self-Deprecation

Life is beautiful. Regardless of the situation, you are in now, don’t ever think the worst of yourself. Patience is a virtue and it will help you deal with the discomfort in a way that best suits your life and the people around you.

Undervaluing yourself ruins confidence and it will be very difficult to rise from your sorry state. Why don’t you inspire yourself and work hard to achieve your dreams?

    5.Give up thinking small

Always think outside the box when it comes to work-related issues, new projects and dealing with people. We are all born genius but others fail to succeed because of their limited thinking. Don’t be over-impressed by your past glories. Try to beat your past records and create a niche for yourself in your respective field.

  • Gnabry hits four as Bayern Munich trounce Tottenham 7-2

Gnabry hits four as Bayern Munich trounce Tottenham 7-2

    By Our Reporter

Tottenham Hotspur suffered their worst home defeat in Europe as Serge Gnabry scored four times in Bayern Munich’s 7-2 romp to seize control of UEFA Champions League Group B on Tuesday.

Master marksman Robert Lewandowski also scored twice as Bayern responded to going behind in devastating fashion

When Son Heung-min gave last season’s runners-up Tottenham a deserved 12th minute lead, the home fans were buoyant.

But their hopes were crushed as Spurs leaked in seven goals at home for the first time in any major competition.

To make matters worse for Mauricio Pochettino’s shell-shocked side, it was Gnabry, a former Arsenal player, who was the architect of their humiliation.

In a rip-roaring start to the first clash between the sides for 35 years, Son had twice wasted guilt-edge opportunities before firing Tottenham in front.

But Tottenham’s lead lasted only three minutes as Joshua Kimmich’s superb long-range effort gave Hugo Lloris no chance.

Tottenham were still posing a threat in a wide-open game but three Bayern Munich goals in 10 minutes left their hopes of a first win in Group B in tatters.

Lewandowski has already bagged 10 goals in six Bundesliga games this season and showed why he is one of the world’s most-feared strikers as he beat Lloris with a shot on the turn seconds before the half-time.

If that was a cruel blow for Tottenham, what happened in the opening minutes of the second half was crushing.

Gnabry, who suffered several frustrating years at Arsenal, shredded Tottenham’s defence in the 53rd minute to score a breathtaking solo goal and struck again two minutes later.

Harry Kane’s penalty kick restored some hope for Tottenham on the hour after Danny Rose was adjudged to have been fouled.

But Bayern Munich were in ruthless mood.

Gnabry completed his hat-trick in the 83rd minute, racing on to Thiago Alcantara’s long ball and then wrong-footing Lloris with a classy finish.

With the home fans flooding towards the exits and Bayern Munich’s followers joyfully singing “football’s coming home”, the visitors piled on the agony.

Lewandowski was played in by Philippe Coutinho and he finished in deadly fashion.

With Tottenham’s defence AWOL again, Gnabry put Niko Kovac’s team in seventh heaven.

Bayern Munich lead Group B with six points from two games, with Tottenham on one.

Red Star Belgrade are second with three points after beating Olympiakos 3-1 in the group’s other match.(Reuters/NAN)

  • Money Conversations parents should have with their kids

Money Conversations parents should have with their kids

Since having a family comes with so much financial responsibilities, having a regular conversation about these financial duties will sure help give the whole family a sense of direction.

As parents, while you try your best to achieve your financial goals, you at the same time make effort to teach your kids everything they need to know about how to make good financial decisions.

You really don’t need to be a financial expert to do this for the family. Children learn from examples, and whatever financial practices they learn from you will go a long way in shaping their relationship with money in future.

So, to inspire your kids about the best financial practices, these five tips shared by Kim Potgieter can help mould them into the personal finance experts you want them to be.

    1. Family Goals

If every person is expected to have financial goals, it makes a lot of sense for families too to have family goals. And while you save for these goals, it is important you let your children know what you are saving for.

Also, every member of the family should have their goals and dreams. You can as a family chat about these goals and how to achieve them.

    2. Money Mechanics

As a parent, it’s important you let your kids know how money is earned and how they can do with it.

If your child gets everything handed to him, he’ll probably find it difficult to understand that he needs to work to make money. Let him understand why you go out in the money and return in the evening.

    3. Wealth and Work

Wealth comes with work, you can’t make money if you don’t lift a finger. Let your kids know they will make much money as long as they believe wealth and work walk together.

Be positive when you discuss your work with them. Let them know that work is that activity through which you earn money that enables choices.

    4. Pocket Money

Giving your kids pocket money when they complete a task that adds value to the family is a valuable lesson that is capable of teaching them about the reward you get for working.

You can also use this same pocket money tip to teach them how to save money.

    5. Pay yourself first

Paying yourself first is the first golden rule you need to manage your money well. Apart from paying bills and taking care of other necessary expenses, you’ve got t start rewarding yourself too.

Teaching your kids this rule is a good way to encourage them to be mindful of savings.
