  • Rochas fires back at Ihedioha

    Rochas fires back at Ihedioha

    By Jennifer Y Omiloli

Immediate past governor of Imo state, Senator Rochas Okorocha, on Friday, August 30, replied his successor, Emeka Ihedioha, over the order that the former be arrested.

Okorocha describing Ihedioha as tyrannical in his actions since he took over as governor of the state, says the order for his arrest is an invitation to anarchy and chaos in Imo state.

In a statement by Sam Onwuemeodo, Okorocha’s media aide, the past governor explains that he had been in Abuja since the end of his tenure as governor and could not have instigated people against officials of the current administration.

The legislator says attacks on him by the government of Emeka Ihedioha is the result of ‘fear of the unknown’ on the part of the administration.

“The arrest order was an open invitation to anarchy or fracas in the state because Imo people will always come out to defend Okorocha.

“It also shows insensitivity on the side of the government in the state because such arrest order was uncalled for and Uche Onyeaguocha (the secretary to the state government) has no right to issue an order of that nature,” the statement said.

“He was in Abuja when the recovery committee members slapped the daughter, Mrs Uloma Rochas Nwosu, invaded and looted the shops of the wife, Nneoma and that of the daughter too. And just the previous week, Onyeaguocha invaded the private guest house of the former governor,” the statement added.

“They were rattled the day Okorocha came into the state for the first time after May 29, 2019, and he was received by a mammoth crowd. It then occurred to them that their blackmail and lies have not affected the love of Imo people for their beloved former governor.

“That is the reason for all these insensitive actions. Again, the PDP never won the 2019 governorship election. They have that issue to contend with.

“Before his inauguration as governor, Chief Ihedioha said he would step on Okorocha’s toes and he has been doing that, throwing caution to the wind. And forgetting too that when you step on one’s toes unjustly your own could peel.” the statement said.

Tribunal upholds Almakura’s election as Senator

    By Abel Leonard Nzwanke

The National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Lafia, Nasarawa State, has upheld the victory of Umaru Tanko Al-Makura of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the duly elected senator for Nasarawa South.

Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared Al-Makura winner of the February 2019 National Assembly election after pulling 113,156 votes to defeat his closest opponent and candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP, Senator Sulieman Adokwe who garnered 104,595 votes.

Senator Adokwe not satisfied with the decision of INEC filed a petition at the tribunal challenging the declaration of Al-Makura as the winner.

The presiding judge, delivering judgment in lafia,Justice David Ugoh hold on the view that the petition of Senator Adokwe of the peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were on the basis of ‘hearsay’ evidence of their principal witness, Ayiwulu Baba Ayiwulu.

The tribunal further emphasised that tribunal consider or rely on evidence of persons who did not have a first-hand,and direct interaction with the facts of the issue.

However the tribunal also revealed that “it is undesirable for counsel to appear in a professional capacity in a case in which he is a material witness.”

He noted that despite the manifest failure of the petitioners to prove their petition, Senator Al-Makura’s counsels still led credible evidence to show the weakness of the petitioners’ case and the futility of the court granting their reliefs.

Paradoxicaly, the tribunal held that the election was peacefully conducted in accordance with the Electoral Act, 2010 and the Regulations and Guidelines for the conduct of 2019 elections.

The tribunal also held that since Adokwe and PDP have failed to show credible evidence that they scored higher votes than the votes scored by Senator Al-Makura in the said election, the declaration made by INEC returning officer, is accurate and here by uphold Senator Al-Makura as the winner of the election.

  • US interference in Hong Kong affairs intolerable

    By Ren Yu

A series of large-scale demonstrations have broken out in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) since June, and quite a number of them have gone far beyond peaceful protests, causing outrageous violence and disruptions.

The radical demonstrators besieged and stormed into the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong SAR, vandalized facilities, and insulted the national flag and emblem, and the regional emblem of the Hong Kong SAR.

The radical forces also attacked journalists and travelers, and assaulted police officers. The violent acts have severely undermined the rule of law, disrupted social order, and hurt Hong Kong’s economy and people’s well-being, as well as the city’s global image.

Such vicious acts have blatantly challenged the authority of the central government, touched the bottom line of the principle of “one country, two systems,” and underestimated the strong determination of the 1.4 billion Chinese people, including the Hong Kong compatriots, to safeguard the country’s national unity and territory and sovereignty integrity.

Some US politicians played a role behind the escalation of the Hong Kong violent incidents. They made irresponsible remarks on Hong Kong affairs, called white black and trampled on international rules and the conscience of mankind.

They called the violent demonstrations in Hong Kong “a beautiful sight to behold”, described the violent crimes as efforts to pursue human rights and freedom, frequently met with anti-China rioters, lodged groundless accusations against the central government and the Hong Kong SAR government, incited violence and confrontation, and openly supported illegal forces.

Such acts of meddling in Hong Kong affairs are flagrant interference in China’s internal affairs, an infringement of the international law and norms in international relations, and obvious hegemonism. It is exactly under the support of certain US politicians that the radical and opposition forces have grown more hostile.

Hong Kong is a part of China and its fate is closely tied to its motherland. In the past 22 years since Hong Kong’s return to China, the “one country, two systems” framework has been widely acknowledged as a successful practice in Hong Kong. Last year, the gross domestic product in Hong Kong reached $360 billion, over twice of the 1996 figure. The number of visitors to Hong Kong soared to more than 65 million, over six times that of 1997.
Hong Kong has been recognized as a global center of finance, trade and shipping. It ranks among the top in the world by various economic and social development indicators. With the construction of the Belt and Road Initiative and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, Hong Kong will embrace new development opportunities.

Hong Kong’s future lies only with China, as British scholar Martin Jacques noted. China’s fast and sustained development has provided valuable opportunities, inexhaustible driving force and vast space for Hong Kong. Hong Kong’s future depends on fully and faithfully implementing the principle of “one country, two systems” and the Basic Law, actively participating in the country’s development and sharing the development outcomes.

Stopping violence and restoring social order meets the expectation of people. Certain evil-minded people in the US played dirty tricks, but the fact will prove that their attempt to ruin China and roil Hong Kong will in no way succeed.

The Chinese government and the Chinese people have the confidence and capability to firmly safeguard national sovereignty, security and unity and protect Hong Kong’s prosperity and stability. Any acts that challenge the bottom line of the “one country, two systems” principle will never be tolerated.
