No Rift Between Akpabio and Akpoti-Uduaghan – South-South Leaders

    • Call Senate President a moral leader
    • Commend Kogi Central Senator for intelligence, self-control, and strong voice

South-South leaders on Sunday praised the cordial relationship between the President of the Senate, Chief Godswill Akpabio, and the Senator representing Kogi Central, Chief Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

“We know that the Senate President bears no ill will towards Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, contrary to the insinuations of political mercenaries,” the leaders stated.

They also criticized certain individuals and groups for attempting to introduce dangerous narratives into recent developments in the Senate.

“We consider it highly irresponsible and uncharitable for some individuals and groups to mischievously try to pit Akpoti-Uduaghan against the Senate leadership simply for expressing her views.”

At a meeting held on Sunday in Calabar, the South-South leaders dismissed rumors of sexual harassment and sidelining, describing them as “wicked and malicious.”

“These smear campaigns are deliberate attempts to tarnish the image of distinguished senators and to create unnecessary conflict between the widely respected and unflappable Akpoti-Uduaghan and the Senate leadership.”

In a statement released after the meeting, the National Chairman of the South-South Front, Chief John Harry, applauded both Akpabio and Akpoti-Uduaghan for their commitment to the nation’s progress.

“There is a general misunderstanding. The unwarranted attacks on Akpabio and Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan amount to an assault on our collective sensibilities.”

Harry further noted the Senate President’s inclusive leadership style and the peaceful atmosphere he has fostered within the Senate.

“No amount of allegations or criticisms can undermine the contributions of these distinguished senators to the nation’s development.”

The South-South leaders urged the people of the region, as well as those from North Central and across Nigeria, to support both the Senate President and Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan.

“The Kogi Central Senator is dedicated and fearless. No amount of blackmail, name-calling, or intimidation from fictitious groups can alter the course of Akpoti-Uduaghan’s destiny.”

The Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Dennis Guwor, has reaffirmed his commitment to providing a conducive working environment for both lawmakers and staff of the State Legislature.

Rt. Hon. Guwor made this statement on Thursday during an inspection of the ongoing rehabilitation work in the administrative building of the Assembly at the State Assembly Complex, Okpanam Road, Asaba.

Accompanied by the Clerk of the House, Mr. Otto Aghoghophia, along with management staff and labor union leaders, the Speaker expressed satisfaction with the resolution of the long-standing issue concerning the central cooling systems in the facility.

HoR Warns MDAs of Disrespect, Non-Compliance with NASS Resolutions

Gives 7-Day Ultimatum to Comply or Face Action
To Invoke Powers Vested in NASS
    Lists 19 Non-Compliance MDAs

    By Achadu Gabriel, Kaduna

The House of Representatives (HoR) Committee on Legislative Compliance has issued a stern warning to Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) regarding their disrespect, disregard, and non-compliance with National Assembly resolutions, including issues linked to corruption.

The committee made this known during a press briefing on Thursday, led by its Chairman, Hon. Yusuf Ahmed Badau, in Abuja.

Hon. Badau emphasized that the National Assembly, as the legislative arm of government, plays a critical role in Nigeria’s democratic process. He warned that further acts of disrespect or disregard for the resolutions of the National Assembly would not be tolerated.

“Its resolutions are key instruments through which it exercises its oversight functions as enshrined in Sections 88 and 89 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended),” he stated.

He continued, “This briefing is necessitated by a growing and troubling trend of disrespect and non-compliance with resolutions of the National Assembly by MDAs of government. The National Assembly plays a critical role in Nigeria’s democratic process, and its resolutions are derived from extensive deliberations, investigations, and consultations aimed at addressing the challenges facing the nation and ensuring good governance for all citizens.”

However, the Chairman expressed increasing concern over the pattern of disrespect and non-compliance by several MDAs. He said, “Such actions undermine the authority of the legislature, weaken the principles of separation of powers, and erode public confidence in government institutions.”

The committee noted that many MDAs had failed to honor invitations or summons issued for hearings, investigations, or briefings. This, he stated, is a clear violation of constitutional provisions.

“Despite clear parliamentary directives or resolutions, several MDAs continue to disregard their obligations to act on matters requiring immediate attention or reform. Some MDAs have failed to provide updates or reports on the status of the implementation of resolutions passed by the National Assembly, creating a disconnect in governance. These acts of non-compliance are not only unacceptable but also a challenge to the principles of accountability and transparency that guide our democratic governance,” he said.

In response to this disturbing trend, the House Committee on Legislative Compliance is taking steps to ensure compliance.

“The Committee will invoke the powers vested in the National Assembly to ensure compliance with its resolutions and summons in line with Sections 88 and 89 of the Constitution. We will engage with the leadership of the National Assembly to explore legislative and administrative measures to address non-compliance,” Hon. Badau explained.

He further stated, “Where non-compliance is linked to issues of corruption, waste, or abuse of office, relevant anti-corruption agencies will be notified to take appropriate action.”

The committee also released a list of 19 MDAs that continue to disrespect or ignore parliamentary resolutions:

    1. Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS)
    2. Office of the Accountant General of the Federation
    3. Bank of Industry (BOI)
    4. Federal Ministry of Transport
    5. Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA)
    6. Federal Ministry of Education
    7. Federal Housing Authority (FHA)
    8. Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development
    9. National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement (NESREA)
    10. Federal Ministry of Women Affairs
    11. Nigeria Communication Satellite Limited
    12. Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC)
    13. Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC)
    14. Police Service Commission
    15. Nigerian Immigration Service
    16. National University Commission
    17. National Inland Waterways Authority
    18. Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETfund)
    19. Federal Mortgage Bank

Hon. Badau gave these MDAs a seven-day ultimatum to comply with the resolutions or face action. He stressed that the House Committee on Legislative Compliance will not tolerate further acts of disrespect or disregard for the resolutions of the National Assembly.

“We are committed to ensuring that all MDAs adhere to constitutional principles, respect the legislative process, and act responsibly in the discharge of their duties. We urge Nigerians to remain vigilant and support the National Assembly in its efforts to uphold accountability, transparency, and good governance,” he concluded.

Northern Youth Group Rejects FG’s Tax Reform Bill, Urges Lawmakers to Throw It Out

    By Achadu Gabriel, Kaduna

The Northern Star Youth Empowerment Initiative, a prominent northern advocacy group, has rejected the Federal Government’s Tax Reform Bill currently under consideration by the National Assembly.

The group, a non-political, non-tribal, and non-religious youth movement, is committed to uniting and protecting northern interests. Its mission is to promote good governance, unity, progress, and development in northern Nigeria.

In a statement released today in Kaduna, the Group’s Director-General, Dr. Abdullahi Idris, PhD, criticized the bill, stating that while certain aspects could be beneficial, provisions related to the distribution of Value Added Tax (VAT) revenue are unfair and would adversely affect the North’s economy.

“After thoroughly analyzing the bill, we have concluded that its current form would create economic challenges for the North. We urge the Federal Government to withdraw it immediately,” Dr. Idris stated.

He also questioned the lack of adequate consultations before the bill’s presentation to the National Assembly and called on northern lawmakers to reject it to avoid backlash from their constituents.

Dr. Idris reminded the public that the bill was introduced despite opposition from notable Nigerians, including members of the National Economic Council, due to its potential to disproportionately benefit some regions at the expense of others.

“We call on the Federal Government to reconsider this bill and subject it to more rigorous scrutiny and broader consultations before reintroducing it for legislative approval,” Dr. Idris concluded.

  • Plateau Group Demands Zoning of Speakership Position to Southern Zone

Plateau Group Demands Zoning of Speakership Position to Southern Zone

A group operating under the name *Coalition of Genuine Plateau South APC Youths* has appealed to the State House of Assembly and the Governor of Plateau State, His Excellency Barrister Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, to consider zoning the Speakership position of the State House of Assembly to the Southern Zone in the interest of justice, fairness, and equity.

The group emphasized that Plateau South deserves the Speakership position as a matter of fairness.

This appeal was made in a statement issued by Ponjul Bulus on Tuesday in Garkawa, Mikang Local Government Area of the state.

The group was responding to a statement signed by Mr. Nansel Barry, which urged the state assembly members and the Executive Governor to allow the incumbent Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Dewan Gabriel, to continue in office.

The group leader, Mr. Ponjul, flanked by other members of the Genuine APC Youths, stated, “We have gathered here today in our numbers to appeal for the zoning of the Speakership position to the Southern Senatorial Region of the state.”

The group further noted, “The strategic importance of the Plateau South Senatorial Region in the state’s affairs cannot be overemphasized. The region has proven to be a reliable ally, particularly in politics.”

“This has been evident in various electoral contests, including the Plateau Governorship elections and others.”

The group added, “In our quest for good governance, inclusiveness in the state’s governance structure must be ensured, as other Senatorial zones have been adequately represented.”

“We appeal for the Plateau South Senatorial Region to be included in the leadership of the State House of Assembly.”

The statement continued, “We have come today to demand that the Speakership position be zoned to the Southern Senatorial District. Failure to do so would mean that the region is excluded, especially considering that the Governor, His Excellency Barrister Caleb Mutfwang, is from the Plateau Central Senatorial Zone, while the Deputy Governor, Her Excellency Hon. Josephine Piyo, hails from the Plateau North Zone. This leaves the Southern Zone as the natural contender for the Speakership position.”

The group argued that zoning the Speakership to the Southern Zone would uphold the principle of inclusiveness, which is crucial for the growth and development of Plateau State and vital for sustainable progress.

The group, therefore, urged the state assembly and the Governor to ensure that the Southern Senatorial Zone is given the opportunity to produce the Speaker.

The statement also expressed discontent with a competing group’s insistence that the Speakership should remain in the Central Senatorial District, warning that such a stance could cause disunity and erode confidence.

“The Plateau South Senatorial Zone has consistently demonstrated loyalty during and after elections,” the group added.

The group concluded by noting, “We have thoroughly reviewed the list of lawmakers from the Southern Zone, and it is notable that the region boasts credible and competent lawmakers who would excel as Speaker of the State House of Assembly.”

  • Local govt reforms, a more urgent need for Nigeria – Speaker Abbas

Local govt reforms, a more urgent need for Nigeria – Speaker Abbas

The Speaker of the House of Representatives Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, Ph.D, has expressed the urgent need for local government administration reforms in Nigeria.

The Speaker made this known in Abuja on Monday while declaring open a national dialogue on local government and constitution amendment. He was represented at the event by the Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu.

Speaker Abbas noted that it was part of the “series of consultations to harness citizens’ views and preferences in our efforts at having a truly peoples’ constitution in the country.”

He recalled that a similar dialogue was held to find constitutional pathways to open up the governance and political space to “accommodate the very resourceful Nigerian women in our decision-making processes.”

He said: “Today’s dialogue focuses on a critical aspect of our governance structure: the local government system. Local governments are often referred to as the closest tier of government to the people. They play an essential role in delivering services, fostering community development, and ensuring that citizens’ voices are heard at all levels of governance.

“However, for local governments to fulfil these roles effectively, they must operate with a degree of autonomy that allows them to respond promptly and appropriately to the unique needs of their communities.

“Sadly, despite the noble intentions of the drafters of our constitution in instituting the local government system, it is evident that there are significant challenges that hinder their effectiveness.”

The Speaker noted that issues such as inadequate funding, lack of autonomy, insufficient capacity, usurpation of its functions by other levels of government, corruption and many more have plagued local governments for decades.

“These challenges not only stifle local governance but also impede national development. The need for reform has never been more urgent,” he stated.

Speaker Abbas stressed that inadequate funding remains one of the most significant obstacles. “Local governments often operate on budgets that are insufficient to meet their responsibilities,” he said, adding that, “This financial constraint limits their ability to deliver essential services such as education, healthcare, infrastructure development, and sanitation.”

As a result, the Speaker said many communities continue to suffer from poor living conditions and lack access to basic amenities.

He added: “Moreover, the lack of autonomy is another critical issue facing local governments in Nigeria. The current structure often places local administrations under the control of state governments, which can lead to interference in their operations and decision-making processes. This lack of independence stifles innovation and accountability at the local level.

“Additionally, insufficient capacity—both in terms of human resources and institutional frameworks—has hindered effective governance at the local level. Many local government officials lack the necessary training and skills required for efficient administration. This gap not only affects service delivery but also erodes public trust in local governance.”

One of the most pressing issues that the House must deal with, Speaker Abbas noted, is the poor quality of elections into local government councils across the states. He said this situation not only undermines the very essence of democracy but also raises serious concerns about the integrity and functionality of the local governance structures.

“When elections are characterised by a lack of competitiveness—wherein the ruling party sweeps all positions—it becomes evident that we are witnessing a mockery of democratic principles.

“This scenario is not merely an embarrassment; it poses a significant threat to our democracy. It fosters an environment where undesirable elements infiltrate these councils, often lacking the necessary capacity and vision to govern effectively.

“Consequently, local governments become mere appendages of state governments or pawns in the hands of so-called godfathers who manipulate political outcomes for their own gain,” he said.

While saying the House acknowledged and appreciated the recent efforts made by the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, in strengthening the local government system, he noted that the recent Supreme Court judgment mandating the conduct of elections into the councils and direct disbursement of funds to them has provided a significant legal framework that supports the autonomy and functionality of local governments across the country.

“This landmark decision is a testament to our collective commitment to uphold democratic principles at all levels of governance. However, while we celebrate these advancements, we must also acknowledge that the need for comprehensive reform has never been more urgent as some nagging issues persist.

“Constitutional reforms are essential to address these challenges comprehensively. We must advocate for greater financial autonomy for local governments by ensuring that they receive adequate funding directly from federal allocations without excessive state control. Additionally, we should explore mechanisms that empower local governments with more decision-making authority over their affairs,” he said.

Noting that investment in capacity building for local government officials is paramount, the Speaker said training programs should be established to equip them with the skills required for effective governance and service delivery.

He added: “Importantly, we must confront the disgraceful poor conduct elections into the councils. We must find a way of instilling transparency, fairness, and openness in the conduct of elections into local governments. Doing this would require the understanding and collaborative efforts of the state governors and Houses of Assembly. We must find a way of convincing them that a strengthened local government system would relieve the States of unnecessary burdens and lead to grassroots development.”

Speaker Abbas said he was aware that the Deputy Speaker and Chairman of the House Committee on Constitution Review, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has initiated talks with the state governors and speakers of the state Houses of Assembly, as the key drivers of the local government system, to ensure compromises and common ground on the subject.

“I support this initiative and hope that it will yield the necessary outcomes in the amendments of the necessary provisions of the constitution,” he said.

Senator Lalong Leads Plateau National Assembly Members in Meeting with Governor Mutfwang

Senator Simon Bako Lalong, representing the Plateau South Senatorial District, has led members of the National Assembly from Plateau State to a meeting with Governor Caleb Mutfwang at the Government House in Jos.

Lalong explained that the meeting was convened at the request of the Governor, who sought greater collaboration and synergy between the state government and national lawmakers to achieve development and progress in Plateau State.

The former governor emphasized that the meeting provided an opportunity for open discussions on the state’s challenges and the roles both parties must play in advancing Plateau State, regardless of political differences.

As the APC leader in Plateau State, Lalong assured Governor Mutfwang that National Assembly members would prioritize the interests of Plateau residents over party politics, ensuring that federal resources are directed to the state.

He congratulated the Governor for convening the meeting, noting that they would continue to advocate for the state’s needs in both the Red and Green Chambers while also drawing the Governor’s attention to issues requiring his intervention.

Earlier, Governor Mutfwang expressed gratitude for the meeting, acknowledging that without collaboration, the state’s development would be hindered. He thanked the National Assembly members for attending and for their commitment to working with his administration to advance Plateau State.
