Insecurity is a Repetition of Sokoto Jihadists War – Middle Belt Leader decries

..As VP Say’s Nigeria ‘ll soon triumph over insecurity

    By Gabriel Udrh, Kaduna

Prof. Yusuf Turaki, on Tuesday descended heavily on federal government, alleging that government knows kidnappers, bandits and other criminal elements in Nigeria as well as paying them to the detriment of the nation’s security.

Prof. Turaki disagreed with politicians who are blaming killings in middle belt on farmers/clash, dating that it is a deceptive narratives with the motives of what he called a repetition of Sokoto jihadists war.

Turaki, the Prof of Theology and social ethics, spoke at one-day peace and security summit, organised by Kaduna State chapter of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) held at ECWA Goodnews church, Narayi, Kaduna.

Titled, “Nigeria’s Insecurity: The church’s response in the 21st century”, the Middle Belt leader the leading keynote speaker, noted that violence has taken over the country to the extent that every segment of the society now speaks violence, adding, “Everybody is overwhelmed with violence”.

Prof. Turaki disagreed with politicians who are blaming killings in middle belt on farmers/clash, saying it is a deceptive narratives with the motives of what he called a repetition of Sokoto jihadists war.

“These are Foreign Fulani who have been allowed to enter Nigeria so that they could help their brothers in Nigeria to kill innocent citizens and wreck havoc on our ancestral lands.

“These Fulani occupy the lands, carrying AK47, killing people, destroying communities in the middle belt and other parts of the country.

“And the government knows them, government pays them to destroy ancestral lands. Politicians know the bandits that enter Nigeria, but they will not tell us.

“Politicians have devised a wrong narrative that is deceptive, saying it is farmers/herders clash in middle belt, if it is clash, how comes Fulani are carrying AK47 to kill the people.

“Nigeria is well blessed with intelligent people but they cannot up till today solve insecurity in the country. sued terrible has befallen our country. God, open the mouths of the people, let them speak the truth and die for the truth.

“What the Fulani are doing now is exactly what Sokoto jihadists did in those old days. They kidnapped and asked people to pay ransom in those days. If you cannot pay, they sold you into slavery or killed you. So kidnapping is not different from what happened during the Sokoto jihadists war. They captured infidel. It is being repeated now in Nigeria”.

In his speech as the Special Guest of Honour, Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo assured that kidnapping, banditry and insecurity generally would soon become things of the past as the country would soon triumph over them.
Prof. Osinbajo who likened Nigeria’s socio-economic problems to that of a woman in a labour room, said after much pains, there will be celebration by the People, when they eventually overcome hardship.

The Vice President was represented by the Chaplain, Villa, Pastor Joseph Oluseyi Malomo at the summit.

According to Osinbajo, “We all desired a nation devoid of any form of kidnapping and terrorism.

“We have heard prophecies of a shining Nigeria, we are longing for the day those prophecies will come to reality. We need to fight the fight of faith because God’s plans for the greatness of Nigeria has not changed, it will surely come. We need to pray for Nigeria.
“Many are weighed down because of problems they are going through, we must as Christians keep the Altars of God burning with prayers to overcome these problems.

“We must keep faith and see the problems we are going through as bread. God will take us to the promise land of a great nation with great value. We must reject politics of identity and ethnicity. Nigeria is going to be a shining nation, and insecurity will soon end” he said.

Kidnappers Killed While Collecting Random In Kogi

    From Noah Ocheni, Lokoja

It was another bad day for criminality operating in Kogi State as two kidnappers met their Waterloo in the early hours of Tuesday in an attempt to collect ransom from one of the victims of the neighboring state.

According to our correspondent, the professional hunters in Okehi Local Government Area of the state ambushed the kidnappers who allegedly came out in Abobo area behind Nigerian Iron Ore Mining Company, Itakpe to collect the ransom demanded before the release of their victims.

  • China will stick to and continuously improve its political party system

China will stick to and continuously improve its political party system

    By People’s Daily

On the occasion of the centenary of the Communist Party of China (CPC), the State Council Information Office of China recently issued a report on the country’s political party system, which demonstrated China’s determination and efforts to uphold CPC leadership, develop socialism with Chinese characteristics, and improve its political party system.

The report, which looked back on how the system has been created, developed and improved, and elaborated on the distinctive characteristics and strengths of the system in political and social life, will effectively help people understand that China’s political party system is the result of a historical process as well as a structure of enormous strength, creativity and vitality.

A country’s political party system is a major component of its political framework and makes a critical contribution to democracy. The system best suited to a country is determined by its history, traditions, and realities, the report pointed out.

The system of multiparty cooperation and political consultation under the leadership of the CPC is a new type of party system growing from China’s soil, and plays a unique role in building consensus, optimizing decision-making, coordinating relationships among parties and maintaining political stability, stressed Xi Jinping, general secretary of CPC Central Committee.

Following the principles of long-term coexistence, mutual oversight, sincerity, and sharing the rough times and the smooth, the CPC and eight other political parties in China have created a multiparty cooperation system in which the CPC exercises state power and the other parties participate fully in the administration of state affairs under the leadership of the CPC.

Besides, the CPC has worked in solidarity with other political parties and non-affiliates, and traveled an extraordinary and glorious journey together, registering remarkable achievements in multiparty cooperation.

Since the 18th National Congress of the CPC in 2012, China has further consolidated the ideological and political foundation of multiparty cooperation, and perfected the framework of the party system under the strong leadership of the CPC Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping at its core. China’s political institution and political party system are exerting more extensive and stronger influence.

China’s political party system embodies the essence of Chinese traditions, reflects the intrinsic requirements of socialism and conforms to China’s realities and its needs in state governance. As a basic component of China’s political system, it contributes to China’s development, national rejuvenation, and social progress, and is of great benefit to the people’s well-being.

To govern a country, ensure safety and order in society require building sound systems. China’s political party system creates a unique political model, and is essential to the task of modernizing China’s governance system and capacity.

The country’s political party system, as a combination of Marxist political party theory and its realities, truly, extensively and in the long term represents the fundamental interests of all people and all ethnic groups and fulfills their aspiration, avoiding the defects of the old-fashioned party system which represents only a selective few or the vested interest.

It unites all political parties and people without party affiliation toward a common goal, effectively preventing the flaws of the absence of oversight in one-party rule or power rotation and nasty competition among multiple political parties.

Moreover, it pools ideas and suggestions through institutional, procedural, and standardized arrangements and develops a scientific and democratic decision-making mechanism, steering away from another weakness of the old-fashioned party system, in which decision-making and governance, confined by interests of different political parties, classes, regions and groups, tears the society apart.

Over the past seven decades and more, this system has grown and matured. It provides Chinese ideas for the world in terms of modern party politics, and offers a new model for global political progress.

The political party system fits China’s reality and fine traditional culture of the pursuit for the common good, inclusiveness, and seeking common ground while shelving differences, and is a great contribution to political civilization of humanity, according to Comrade Xi Jinping.

China will, as always, learn and draw from the positive experiences of other countries, but will not imitate other political party systems mechanically, or impose its own on any other country. China respects the right of other countries to choose a political party system best adapted to their own realities. Based on equality and mutual respect, China is willing to strengthen cooperation and mutual learning with other countries, promote democracy on the international stage, and eventually build a global community with a shared future for mankind.

  • Over 100 Foreign diplomats visit exhibition on CPC history in Beijing

Over 100 Foreign diplomats visit exhibition on CPC history in Beijing

    By Zhang Bolan, People’s Daily

Over 100 diplomatic envoys of foreign countries and representatives of international organizations to China visited an exhibition on the history of the Communist Party of China (CPC) at the Museum of the CPC in Beijing on June 24.

Through the exhibition under the theme “staying true to the founding mission,” they got a better understanding of the extraordinary journey of the CPC over the past century.

At the exhibition hall for the site of the first National Congress of the CPC, they saw photos and manuscripts that bring back memories of the revolutionary practice of the CPC in its early days and felt the original aspiration of the CPC members.

I saw how the CPC has struggled for its goals at the exhibition. The founding of the New China helped the Chinese people ‘stand up’,” said Ahcene Boukhelfa, Algerian Ambassador to China, who noted that every Chinese has the opportunities to realize his/her dreams today.

Through art forms including paintings, sculptures, music and videos, as well as technological means related to sound and lighting, the exhibition aims to bring immersive experience to visitors.

A glasses-free 3D animated film at the exhibition showed envoys and representatives vividly the Long March military retreat in the CPC history. They recorded the film with their mobile phones, then gave a big round of applause after hearing the interpretation of the narrator’s words: “Every generation has its own long march, and every generation must see that march through.”

Sudanese Ambassador to China Gafar Karar Ahmed pointed out that the CPC has led its people out of poverty and backwardness, and developed China into the world’s second-largest economy, sincerely keeping its promise to the Chinese people.

China’s experience in development belongs to both the country itself and the entire world, the Sudanese ambassador said.

At a simulated high-speed train cab, foreign envoys and representatives tried driving trains and experienced the speed of China’s railways.

Jose Luis Bernal, Mexican Ambassador to China, has been in China for over 4 years, and marveled at China’s rapid development. “I have witnessed changes in China with my own eyes. From my trips to many Chinese cities and villages, I find that China’s transportation is getting more convenient, and its technologies have continuously advanced,” he said.

More and more people in China have enjoyed modern life, said the Mexican ambassador, adding that smartphones and computers are widely used even in remote mountainous areas in China.

The CPC has strived to leave no region or individual behind on the road to realizing common prosperity, according to him.

Through the exhibits from different stages in the CPC history, envoys and representatives got to learn about the stories behind the development miracles the Chinese people have achieved under the leadership of the CPC.

After visiting the exhibition, they took selfies and posed for group photographs in front of a huge CPC flag sculpture at the west square of the Museum of the CPC.

It’s really necessary to build such a museum for permanent and comprehensive exhibitions of the CPC history, said Carlos Miguel Pereira, Cuban Ambassador to China, who considers understanding the CPC history a necessity for learning about China.

  • China puts into use first batch of generating units at hydropower station featuring world’s largest single-unit capacity

China puts into use first batch of generating units at hydropower station featuring world’s largest single-unit capacity

By Wang Yongzhan, Du Yifei, People’s Daily

The first batch of generating units of China’s Baihetan hydropower station, the largest hydropower project under construction in the world, were officially put into operation on the morning of June 28.

The hydropower station, which straddles the border between Ningnan county in southwest China’s Sichuan province and Qiaojia county in the neighboring Yunnan province, ranks first and second in the world in terms of single-unit capacity and total installed capacity, respectively.

Located on the dry and hot valley of the Jinsha River, the mega hydropower station faces complicated geological conditions and is the world’s most technically challenging hydropower project under construction.

Involving a total investment of 220 billion yuan (about $34.1 billion), the hydropower station, which has been undertaken by China Three Gorges Corporation, will have a total installed capacity of 16 million kilowatts and be equipped with 16 hydro-generating units independently developed by China, each with a capacity of one million kilowatts.

The water turbines at Baihetan hydropower station have a maximum efficiency of 96.7 percent, and the rated efficiency of the generators exceed 99 percent, representing the highest efficiency indexes of hydro-generating units in the world, according to an executive of Dongfang Electric Machinery Co., Ltd., which has been responsible for the development of the eight generating units to be positioned on the left bank of the Jinsha River.

Each hydro-generating unit of the Baihetan hydropower station is more than 50 meters high and over 8,000 tons in weight. The rotatable part of the generating unit consists of more than ten thousand components, with their weight reaching 2,600 tons.

What is particularly impressive about the mega project is that its first batch of generating units that went into operation on Monday has realized zero counterweight runner balancing after final assembly, becoming the world’s first case of giant hydro-generating units that met owner’s index of high-quality products without the need for a trial run with counterweight and creating a new record in the hydropower industry. The generating units have thus been praised as top-notch products by experts of the industry.

Each hydro-generating unit is comprised of more than ten thousand components and parts, including runner, rotor and the generator shaft, according to Leng Jianhua, head of the project department of Dongfang Electric Machinery Co., Ltd. at the Baihetan hydropower station.

“These components and parts might have a slight difference in weight if not produced with the same machine tool, which could lead to imbalance and deviation in torque, a problem that needs to be solved with counterweight,” Leng said.

The generating units of Baihetan hydropower station have achieved zero counterweight as there is almost no torque imbalance, Leng said, adding that the result means relevant personnel have done a great job in controlling deviations in research and development, design, manufacturing, processing, as well as installation.

The construction of the main part of Baihetan hydropower station kicked off in July 2017. All generating units of the project are expected to be operational by July 2022. Upon completion, it will be the world’s second-largest hydropower station, second only to the Three Gorges Dam project in central China’s Hubei province.

As a major project in China’s west-east power transmission program, Baihetan hydropower station will, together with the Three Gorges Dam project and Gezhouba Water Conservancy Project in Hubei, as well as the Wudongde, Xiluodu, and Xiangjiaba hydropower stations on the Jinsha River, form the world’s largest “clean energy corridor”, which will bear great significance for improving China’s energy mix and advancing the country’s endeavor to realize the goal of peaking carbon dioxide emissions before 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality before 2060.

After Baihetan hydropower station is fully put into operation, the power generated by the hydropower station a day will be enough to meet the need of 500,000 people for household power consumption for a year.

With an annual power generation capacity of over 62.44 billion kWh, the project is expected to save about 19.68 million tons of standard coal a year, thus helping reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 51.6 million tons, sulfur dioxide by 170,000 tons, and nitrogen oxides by 150,000 tons annually.

  • Hong Kong holds exhibition to mark China’s scientific achievements in past century

Hong Kong holds exhibition to mark China’s scientific achievements in past century

    By People’s Daily

An exhibition showcasing China’s scientific achievements in the past 100 years was recently held in Hong Kong, sparking heated response from all walks of life of the Hong Kong society.

The exhibition, which also displayed lunar soil brought back by China’s Chang’e 5 spacecraft, was held across the city during a five-day visit by six of the nation’s top aerospace experts.

The outstanding achievements of China’s aerospace ignited the patriotism of the Hong Kong compatriots, calling them to devote themselves to developing the country.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China (CPC). Over the past 100 years, the CPC has united the Chinese people and led them to achieve remarkable progress, and the development of aerospace technology is a mirror of such progress.

From the Mars probe Tianwen-1 to the operation of the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System, and from the lunar samples collected and returned by Chang’e 5 spacecraft to the successful rendezvous and docking between Shenzhou-12 manned spaceship and the Tianhe core module of China’s space station, the achievements of China’s aerospace technology have significantly enhanced the confidence and pride of all Chinese, including the Hong Kong compatriots.

As Hong Kong celebrates the 100th anniversary of the founding of the CPC, Chinese aerospace scientists have been warmly welcomed on their visits to the special administrative region. It fully demonstrates that as a part of China, Hong Kong compatriots have always shared the dignity and glory with the people from the Chinese mainland, and jointly shouldered the mission of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

Promoting sci-tech cooperation between Hong Kong and the mainland, supporting the special administrative region to become an international center of innovative technologies, giving play to their own unique sci-tech strengths and contributing to economic development and improving people’s living standards both in Hong Kong and the mainland are all part of the implementation of the “one country, two systems” principle in Hong Kong, said general secretary Xi Jinping of the CPC Central Committee.

In recent years, Hong Kong’s scientific world has joined relevant aerospace projects of the mainland for multiple times. An innovative lunar topographic mapping and geomorphological analysis technique developed by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University helped China’s Chang’e 4 lunar probe select landing site on the far side of the moon, and the university’s Mars Landing Surveillance Camera also contributed to China’s first Mars probe.

Taking advantage of the “one country, two systems” principle, Hong Kong has firmly grasped major opportunities of cooperation in innovation and technology, the Belt and Road construction, and the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. It is achieving better development while integrating into the development of the country.

The fact that Hong Kong compatriots are sharing dignity and glory with the people of the Chinese mainland, and jointly shouldering the mission of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, is a result of the adherence to and improvement of the “one country, two systems” principle and the long-term stability of the principle.

The law on safeguarding national security in Hong Kong has been enacted for a year. It has led to a major transition from chaos to stability in the special administrative region, and created a sound environment and won a larger space for solving deep-rooted contradictions and problems such as livelihood. Hong Kong’s electoral system has been improved, which has laid a solid foundation for “patriots governing Hong Kong,” ensuring Hong Kong’s prospects with good governance.

To make a bright future with concerted efforts is the biggest expectation of the Hong Kong society. As long as the special administrative region adheres to and advocates the leadership of the CPC, constantly improves systems and mechanisms related to the implementation of the Constitution and the Basic Law, and integrates Hong Kong into the development of the country, it will surely write a new chapter of development together with the Chinese mainland.

A strong Chinese nation benefits all Chinese. To achieve the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation is the greatest dream of China in modern times, as well as a cause shared by generations of Chinese people. The dream has never been so close to the Chinese people. Realizing it will also bring broad space for Hong Kong compatriots and bring prosperity and development to Hong Kong. China, opening wide and witnessing drastic changes, is able to offer strong impetus for Hong Kong to better give play to its advantages, expand its development space and tackle deep-rooted problems. In particular, the building of a new development paradigm, the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and the implementation of the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025) have created not-to-be-missed opportunities for the special administrative region. Finding its position in the country’s development and playing a more active role, Hong Kong is bound to nurture new advantages, make new contributions and achieve new development.

The future of Hong Kong has always been connected with the motherland, and national development has always been the most powerful support for the development of Hong Kong. In the future, the path of common development between Hong Kong and the mainland China will surely become wider and wider.

  • Why I jumped bail, escaped from Nigeria – Nnamdi Kanu

Why I jumped bail, escaped from Nigeria – Nnamdi Kanu

The self-acclaimed leader of the proscribed Indigenous People Of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu on Tuesday, opened up on why he escaped from the country inspite of the criminal charges of terrorism and treasonable felony brought against him by the federal government

Looking heavily weighed down, Kanu, who was brought to court for the continuation of trial shortly after he was intercepted by security operations, sought the permission of Justice Binta Nyako to address the court and present his side of the story.

Upon the permission, Kanu told the court in the presence of heavily armed security operatives that his house was unlawfully invaded by security men with his life seriously threatened.

The self-acclaimed Biafran leader further alleged that he would have been killed along with others on the day of the invasion if not for the wisdom he applied to jump out of the country.

Kanu’s reaction was provoked by the federal government’s information through its counsel, Shuaib Labaran that Kanu jumped the bail granted by the court to escape trial by running out of the country.

Labaran had applied to the court for an order to remand Kanu in the custody of the Department of State Service (DSS).

The counsel said the request became imperative because lawyers to Kanu were yet to be abreast of his re-arrest.

Justice Binta Nyako granted the request and ordered that Kanu be remanded in the custody of DSS till July 26 for the continuation of his trial.

Although the continuation of trial was originally slated for October 20, 2021, it was brought downward to July 26, 2021, for his lawyers to appear for his defense.

Kanu appeared to have been given the VIP treatment while being moved out of court.

He was taken away in handcuffs through a special gate reserved for Judges and highly placed persons from where he was moved to the DSS detention centre.

Hordes of photographers and cameramen who had positioned themselves to take his photographs were disappointed upon discovery that Kanu had been taken away.

  • Reps confirm Yahaya as Chief of Army Staff

Reps confirm Yahaya as Chief of Army Staff

The House of Representatives has confirmed the nomination of Major General Farouk Yahaya as Chief of Army Staff.

The confirmation followed the consideration and adoption of the screening report by the House’ Committees on Defense and Army at the plenary on Tuesday.

The joint committee, which screened Yahaya earlier on June 15, 2021, laid its report earlier on Tuesday.

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), had asked the Senate and the House to confirm the appointment of Yahaya.

Yahaya’s appointment was announced one week after the demise of the immediate past COAS, Lt.-Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru, and 10 others in a plane crash in Kaduna.

During his screening, the nominee, who was asked to introduce himself, also recalled that he had worked in all the strategic positions, departments and units of the Nigerian Army, making him understand their peculiarities and situations. He added that he served on international war and peacekeeping missions including in Liberia.

The COAS designate said, “I am Major General Farouk Yahaya. I was born on January 5, 1966…in Sokoto State. I joined the military 36 years ago. So, if you will, I have brought a lot with me; 36 years of military experience, having joined the Army on the 26th September 1985, as a member of the 37th Regular Course in the NDA (Nigerian Defense Academy). I passed on the 22nd of September 1990.

Remain selfless, disciplined, Yahaya charges soldiers
“Since that time, I have passed through all the relevant courses commensurate with my career as I grow up and I have (served) in various capacities, including command, staff, administration and extracurricular.”

Yahaya also said, “I went to the headquarters of Theatre Command as Theatre Commander and I am pleased to observe that I am one of the longest-serving Theatre Commanders. I think only the former CDS served longer than me. I have been there for over a year.

“I am pleased to report that it was under my command that we were able to enter the Timbuktu Triangle that we were not able to get into for a very long time. Timbuktu was one dreaded area that hitherto was held by the terrorists. But with the support of the Federal Government and the Chief of Army Staff then, we were able to clear the Timbuktu Triangle and ransack all the hitherto enclaves of Boko Haram.

“Having looked at my career, I believe I have virtually seen it all. I have seen war in other countries and how it was done. I was involved in internal security operations, both here and there; I have been to the North-West, South-South and to the North-East.

“The challenges we are facing now, all are characterised by these areas I have mentioned, where I have first-hand information; where I have also commanded troops and administered them in achieving what we have done.

“I, therefore, believe that I have the prerequisite requirement to provide my services in this office of the Chief of Army Staff if so confirmed. What I have brought is 36 years of experience and commitment regarding leadership that I have had throughout my career.”
