They were earlier arrested for holding a protest against bad governance on New Year’s Eve in Abuja and subsequently taken to a police unit infamously known as ‘Abattoir’ in the Lokogoma area of the FCT.

“We have been sent to the infamous Kuje Prison for the next 24 hours while they plot their next moves. But we are very resolute and convinced that this year will be different for the tyrant! #RevolutionNow,” Sowore tweeted on Monday.

  • Atiku blames FG for destroying his business as he sells off his shares in Intels

Atiku blames FG for destroying his business as he sells off his shares in Intels

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has reportedly been selling off his shares in Intels, a company he co-founded with an Italian national Gabriele Volpi, to provide integrated logistics services for Nigeria’s maritime, oil and gas sectors.

Intels signed an agreement with the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) in 2010 to collect revenue on behalf of the federal government agency on some port operations, but there has been many issues from the deal on grounds of alleged illegalities.

In a statement released on Monday January 4 by his spokesman Paul Ibe, the former presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party accused the federal government of going after his business.

Insisting that there should be a marked difference between politics and business, Atiku added that he is redirecting his investment to other sectors of the economy for returns and creation of jobs.

    The statement read;

“Co-founder of Integrated Logistics Services Nigeria Limited (Intels), Atiku Abubakar, has been selling his shares in Intels over the years.

“It assumed greater urgency in the last five years, because this Government has been preoccupied with destroying a legitimate business that was employing thousands of Nigerians because of politics.

“He has sold his shares in Intels and redirected his investment to other sectors of the economy for returns and creation of jobs.”

  • COVID-19: PTF considers another lockdown as 33 persons die from COVID-19

COVID-19: PTF considers another lockdown as 33 persons die from COVID-19

The Presidential Taskforce says another lockdown may be enforced just as 33 persons died from the viral disease last week.

The National Coordinator of the PTF, Dr Sani Aliyu, said this during a TV interview on Sunday, January 3. Aliyu said the only way Nigerians can prevent the enforcement of another lockdown is to adhere to the non-pharmaceutical protocols of Coronavirus. He expressed shock that Nigerians can still flout the protocols even during the second wave of the pandemic which appears to be deadlier than the first wave.

“If you don’t want a lockdown, the only way is to make sure we use our facemasks, avoid mass gatherings, avoid people who have respiratory tract infections, sanitise our hands and follow those non-pharmaceutical interventions. The very vaccines that we currently have are those non-pharmaceutical interventions.

If numbers continue to go up, all options are on the table. There are countries in the world that have been able to control this pandemic simply by following these non-pharmaceutical interventions. They may be inconvenient, but they will not be as difficult as a lockdown” he said

Aliyu disclosed that 33 persons died of COVID in the last one week.

“We are talking holistically here. All I can say is that 33 people died of COVID-19 in the last one week. Are we saying those people died for nothing? We have just recorded 6,000 cases in one week, far more than we ever recorded.

COVID-19 exists; anybody who says COVID-19 does not exist is probably living in a completely different world. In the last one week, we’ve had a tripling of cases. You can see what’s happening in the United States, you can see what’s happening in the UK.

I’m sure most of those who have been following the numbers will realise that what we have now far exceeds what we had in June/July last year.

In week 52, which is the week we’ve just finished, we’ve seen a tripling in weekly number of cases, compared to what we had three weeks ago. The 6,000 cases per week is really huge. Our hospitals are already starting to get overloaded and we are already starting to feel the pressure within the healthcare system.

So, talking about the projection, the projection really depends on whether people will start taking this very seriously and start following those non-pharmaceutical interventions that we’ve been talking about for the last one year.

We’ve been able to demonstrate that it’s possible to flatten the curve, but we need the cooperation of everybody, we need the cooperation of the general public, we need the cooperation of the state governments” he said.

He said efforts are being made to ensure the availability of the COVID9 vaccines in Nigeria by the end of January 2021. He added that the administration of the vaccine would be voluntary and that the government would not force anyone to take it.

The vaccine, together with the non-pharmaceutical interventions, is the only way to get on top of this epidemic and by the way, Nigeria cannot afford to be a pariah nation. I can tell you that in the coming months, as more and more people start taking this vaccine, it will be very clear there’s not going to be an issue with safety.

“If you don’t have the vaccine, you are going to be stuck because I am very certain that countries, internationally in the next six months to a year, will start insisting on a certificate before you get into their country. So, you’ll not be able to go for the Hajj, the Umrah or the Christian pilgrimage, holiday to Dubai, or business trip to China or South Africa, if you do not have the vaccine.

“Hopefully, we should have the first batch of the vaccine in the next four weeks, by the end of January.” he said

  • FG Arraigns Sowore, four others in court over New Year’s Eve Protest

FG Arraigns Sowore, four others in court over New Year’s Eve Protest

The Federal Government has arraigned Omoyele Sowore and four others at the Magistrate Court in Wuse Zone 2, Abuja, the nation’s capital.

Sowore was arrested by the police for leading a protest against bad governance on New Year’s Eve in Abuja.

He is being arraigned alongside four others by the Federal Government on three charges of criminal conspiracy, unlawful assembly, and attempting to incite others.

They all pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Sowore and four others in court

The Prosecution, however, alleged that the defendants were arrested on New Year eve with placards calling for a violent revolution against President Muhammadu Buhari.

Sowore had earlier before the protest charged Nigerians on Twitter to hold a crossover protest by picking up a candle and a placard showing their grievances against the President Muhammadu Buhari administration.

This is not the first time Sowore will be arrested. He was detained for over 100 days in 2019 for calling for a #RevolutionNowProtest.

  • South Africa to begin COVID-19 vaccinations in February

South Africa to begin COVID-19 vaccinations in February

The South African Government has outlined the country’s COVID-19 vaccine rollout plan with vaccination likely to begin in February after being hit by a second wave of coronavirus cases.

Health Minister, Zweli Mkhize while giving an update on the government’s COVID-19 vaccine rollout strategy on Sunday December 3, said they expect manufacturers to deliver COVID-19 vaccines as early as next month, and priority will be given to frontline care workers.

“We’re trying as much as possible to get some vaccines to be available much before that date,” said Mkhize.

“We are targeting February,” Dr. Zweli Mkhize said while cautioning that before that can happen negotiations must be concluded with vaccine makers including Pfizer, Moderna, and AstraZeneca, as well as with Russian and Chinese laboratories.

“All of that will depend on the success of current bilateral negotiations we’re having with various companies,” he added.

To finance its vaccine programme, the administration plans to seek help from the private sector as well as from the country’s main health insurers.

This comes  a week after the South African government paid a deposit of 15.8 million euros to enter Covax, the mechanism for the equitable distribution of vaccines established by the UN World Health Organisation

But South Africa, by far the worst-hit country in the African continent, does not expect to receive the first vaccine doses under that programme until the second quarter of the year.

“It is clear that the second wave that we are going through is affecting us to levels which are even higher than in the earlier stage,” the minister said

“The only way to deal with the Covid-19 not only in South Africa but throughout the world is the provision of the immunity through the vaccination,” Mkhize added.

The country plans to vaccinate 67 percent of its population of 59 million people, in order to achieve sufficient collective immunity to contain the spread of the coronavirus.
