  • Two BEDC staff electrocuted in Delta

Two BEDC staff electrocuted in Delta

Two staff of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) have been electrocuted in Asaba, the Delta State capital.

It was gathered that the yet-to-be identified victims were working when power was suddenly restored, leading to their electrocution.

The Director-General, Young Nigerians Organisation, Victor Ojie, who confirmed the incident  on December 22, accused the electricity company of not providing safety gadgets for its worker.

“Over time, this ugly trend has been happening in Delta State; employees of the BEDC have been dying on the job. I wonder why the company cannot provide safety gadgets for its workers,” he said.

“When the workers want to go to the field, they usually switch off power lines that link to the area of work. After finishing the work, they will radio the office to switch the power on. Some of them sabotage themselves by switching it on while work is still ongoing, but if they have a safety guard, they will not be electrocuted. The families of the victims are in pain now; so, we urge the BEDC to compensate the families.” he added.

The forum advocated establishment of military camps for training of guards to block the movement of hoodlums, emphasizing that such military units should be provided with adequate weapons.    The Governors implored the Nigeria Police Force to collaborate with State Governments in the recruitment and training of community Police to provide adequate security at the grassroots.

The forum noted that efforts were being stepped up to involve traditional rulers and community leaders in intelligence gathering to assist security agents in fighting insecurity in the zone.

DSS raises the alarm over plot to bomb worship centers, parks

The Department of State Services has alerted Nigerians about plans by “enemies of state” to unleash terror on vulnerable places, including critical infrastructure, places of worship as well as recreational centres during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.

It said the plot would be executed through the use of explosives, suicide bombing and other dangerous weapons.

The DSS spokesperson for the Service, Dr Peter Afunanya, in a statement, however, assured that the security forces had taken measures to thwart the plot, which according to him, was meant to undermine the authority of the government.

He, therefore, urged patriotic members of the public to remain vigilant during and after the yuletide.

He stated, “The Department of State Services wishes to inform the public about plans by some criminal elements to carry out violent attacks on public places including key and vulnerable points during the yuletide seasons.

“The planned dastardly acts are to be executed through the use of explosives, suicide bombing and other dangerous weapons.

“The objective is to create a general sense of fear among the people and subsequently undermine the government.”

Against this backdrop, the service called on Nigerians to be extra vigilant and report strange movements to security and law enforcement agencies.

“On its part, the Service is collaborating with other sister agencies to ensure that adequate measures are put in place for protection of lives and property.

“To further achieve this purpose, the Service has provided these emergency response numbers: 08132222105 and 09030002189 for urgent contacts. It is also using this opportunity to unveil its interactive website, www.dss.gov.ng, for public communication support,” the secret police said.

The DSS asked the citizens to take advantage of the portal and similar ones provided by related agencies, to provide information to the security agencies.

The service further advised those planning to cause chaos and breach of public peace to desist, saying it would stop at nothing to apprehend and bring them to justice.

“While assuring citizens and residents of their safety during and after the festive periods, the DGSS, Alhaji YM. Bichi, with his management and staff, wishes all, happy celebrations and a prosperous 2021,” the statement added.

Zamfara joins SOKAPU Youth: Urge DSS to investigate APC publicity secretary utterances

    By Gabriel Udeh, Kaduna

Zamfara State government has join Southern Kaduna People’s Union (SOKAPU) Youth Wing, in calling for arrest of the All Progressive  Congress (APC) Acting Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Yekini Nabena, over his comment, saying the  Department of State Services (DSS) must go after him, the way it went after Dr Obadiah Mailafia during his Radio interview.

The media aid to the Zamfara State Governor, Yusuf Idris, who made the call in an interview with our correspondent on telephone on Tuesday, said APC is using it, to divert attention from its  incapability and failure to rescued country from security challenges.

The media Officer also said that the DSS should follow Yekini and ensured that he name the so called northwest governor behind the bandits.

SOKAPU National Youth Leader, John Isaac (Sir Jay), in a statement issued in Tuesday in kaduna quoted the APC acting publicity secretary of saying that a North-west governor is behind the heightened cases of banditry, abductions and other violent crimes in that zone.

The SOKAPU Youth Wing, in a statement signed made available to journalists yesterday stated that it “has observed with sadness the deliberate silence of the DSS over Yekini’s statement as against what the secret police did when the former Deputy Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Dr Obadiah Mailafia, made similar disclosure in August this year.

“The attention of the SOKAPU Youth Wing has been drawn to a statement credited to the All Progressive Congress (APC) Acting Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Yekini Nabena, that a North-west governor is behind the heightened cases of banditry, abductions and other violent crimes in that zone”, it stated.
The Youths lamented that “Dr Mailafia had disclosed during a radio interview some months ago that a current Northern governor is one of the commanders of Boko Haram and behind the increasing acts of insurgency and banditry ravaging the North”, and was invited many times and accused of threatening national security.
Accordingly, the union statement stressed that “It is, however disturbing to note that Yekini’s statement does not seem to threatened national security as the DSS suggested of Dr Mailafia’s disclosure.
“It surfices to say that we live in a state where there are different strokes for different folks.”While we the youths and people of Southern Kaduna believe the DSS has a responsibility of protecting national security, we also believe this responsibility must be pursued responsibly”, the statement added.
“We, therefore, demand that the DSS henceforth desist from this continued distraction, harassment and selective witch-hunting of a law-abiding and a quintessential patriot  in the person of Dr Mailafia who s known for his selfless love and patriotism.
“The DSS should, instead, concentrate on intelligence gathering in curbing and addressing the security challenges facing the North”, it stated.
