Nigeria can’t continue with herdsmen –Presidency

The Presidency has said that it has to stop herdsmen from roaming all over the country to prevent clashes with farmers.

The Senior Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said this when he appeared on Channels Television‘s Sunrise Daily on Tuesday.

“We have to stop these herders from roaming and eating up crops all over the country. They drive their cattle into farmlands and they eat up crops and the farmers fight back and the killings follow. This country cannot continue in this way,” he said.

Shehu blamed the roaming of the herdsmen on the drying up of grazing lands in the northern-most parts of Nigeria.

He said, “The encroachment by desert leading to the drying up of a lot of grazing lands in the northern-most parts of the country have put pressure on the herders who are looking southwards for green grass so that their cattle will eat and also have water to drink.

“It’s a global climate change situation which is unfortunate, considering what has happened around Lake Chad basin itself drying to up about only ten per cent of its original size.”

Shehu expressed delight that governors of the north-central are coming together to solve the problem of grazing.

Lai Mohammed reveals his only regret serving as a Minister in this government

Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, says his only regret serving as a minister in this government is that some Nigerians have failed to appreciate that the Buhari-led administration is doing so much with little resources.

Mohammed said this when he spoke at a Special Forum of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

He said with dwindling resources, no government in the history of Nigeria had implemented programmes alleviating poverty among women and vulnerable groups as well as created jobs for the youths as the Buhari administration had done since coming into power in 2015.

“My regret in this government is that Nigerians have failed to appreciate that the government is doing much more with much less. 2010 to 2014 crude oil was selling from 100 dollars to 140 dollars per barrel, but the highest we have sold since we came in is 60 dollars.

Sometimes at the peak of COVID-19 pandemic, we were even paying for storage because nobody wanted to take our crude.

With the drop in revenues and security challenges this government has not retrenched one person but put in place programmes to cushion the effects of the pandemic,’’ he said.

The minister said Nigerians are not giving credit to various intervention programmes of government such as the School Feeding Programme, with no fewer than 12.8 million pupils getting one free meal a day to develop their mental capacity.

Nigeria on the verge to be declared a failed state –Financial Times

A report by the Financial Times of London has revealed that Nigeria as a country going backwards economically and plagued with terrorism, illiteracy, poverty, banditry, and kidnapping and risks becoming a failed state.

The UK-based newspaper said this in an editorial on Tuesday titled, ‘Nigeria at Risk of Becoming a Failed State’.

It said the abduction and subsequent rescue of over 300 schoolboys in Kankara, Katsina State, revived memories of the 276 Chibok schoolgirls abducted in Borno State in 2014.

According to the newspaper, while the government’s claim that no ransom was paid to the abductors of the schoolboys remains doubtful, other acts of criminality could not be overlooked.

The editorial read in part, “The government insists no ransom was paid. Scepticism is warranted. In a country going backwards economically, carjacking, kidnapping and banditry are among Nigeria’s rare growth industries. Just as the boys were going home, Nigerian pirates abducted six Ukrainian sailors off the coast.

“The definition of a failed state is one where the government is no longer in control. By this yardstick, Africa’s most populous country is teetering on the brink.”

The newspaper also questioned the claim by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), that Boko Haram had been technically defeated.

It said contrary to the government’s claim, Boko Haram remained an ever-present threat

The Financial Times stated, “President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015 pronounced Boko Haram technically defeated’. That has proved fanciful. Boko Haram has remained an ever-present threat. If the latest kidnapping turns out to be its work, it would mark the spread of the terrorist group from its north-eastern base.

“Even if the mass abduction was carried out by ‘ordinary’ bandits — as now looks possible — it underlines the fact of chronic criminality and violence. Deadly clashes between herders and settled farmers have spread to most parts of Nigeria. In the oil-rich, but impoverished, Delta region, extortion through the sabotage of pipelines is legendary.”

The newspaper said security is not the only area where “the state is failing”.

The Financial Times added that Nigeria has more poor people than any other country even as Nigeria has the highest number of out of school children on earth

The newspaper stated that as oil continues to lose its value, Nigeria’s economy would worsen.

“The population, already above 200 million, is growing at a breakneck 3.2 per cent a year. The economy has stalled since 2015 and real living standards are declining. This year, the economy will shrink 4 per cent after COVID-19 dealt a further blow to oil prices.

“In any case, as the world turns greener, the elite’s scramble for oil revenue will become a game of diminishing returns. The country desperately needs to put its finances, propped up by foreign borrowing, on a sounder footing,” it said.

The newspaper said Buhari, who has less than three years left in office, must use the remainder of his term, to redouble efforts at improving security.

It advised the government to restore trust in key institutions, among them the judiciary, the security services and the electoral commission, which will preside over the 2023 elections.

The Financial Times said the #EndSARS protests led by Nigerian youths, signaled a glimmer of hope for Nigeria’s teeming youth population

It added, “The broad coalition that found political expression this year in the EndSARS movement against police brutality provides a shard of optimism. At least Nigeria has a relatively stable democracy. Now Nigeria’s youth — creative, entrepreneurial and less tainted by the politics of extraction — should use that system to reset the country’s narrative.”

The newspaper concluded by saying that it was time for Nigeria to restructure its political system and concentrate on security, health, education, power and roads

“At the present trajectory, the population will double to 400 million by 2050. If nothing is done, long before then, Nigeria will become a problem far too big for the world to ignore,” it warned.

  • New Covid-19 variant has been present in Nigeria since August – Researchers

New Covid-19 variant has been present in Nigeria since August – Researchers

The new variant of the coronavirus currently causing panic and concern in the United Kingdom and the European Union has been identified in Nigeria by scientists at the Africa Centre of Excellence for Genomics of Infectious Diseases (ACEGID), at the Redeemers University in Ede, Osun State.

The new variant, detected in the UK in September and dubbed “lineage B.1.1.7” has triggered the current exponential spike in the number of COVID-19 cases in the larger path of the United Kingdom, leading to a travel ban on the UK by some countries and a stay-at-home tier-4 level restriction in the affected parts of the country.

But scientists at the Africa Centre of Excellence for Genomics of Infectious Diseases at Ede, in South West Nigeria, said Monday, through a publication in Virological, a website for the global Genomics community, that they found the same variant “lineage B.1.1.7” existing in Osun State Nigeria since August 3rd when the first sample was collected.

Another sample, also from Osun State, collected in October, correspondingly showed the presence of the new variant.

According to Christian Happi, Professor of molecular biology and genomics who is also the Director at the Africa Centre of Excellence for Genomics of Infectious Diseases (ACEGID), “the B.1.1.7 lineage we found in Nigeria, predating the one described in the UK, has also been observed to rise rapidly in the UK over the past four weeks, indicating the plausible increased spread of the virus by specific non-synonymous mutations in the spike protein.”

Should this be a case for panic and worry for Nigerians? Mr. Happi’s team made a case for caution, warning that although the new variant might not be responsible for the rise in cases, that could change when new samples are sequenced.

“At the moment, only about 1% of the genomes from Nigeria belong to the new SARS-CoV-2 variant (B.1.1.7 lineage) and one of them predates the first description in the UK. However, this might change in the next few weeks when we sequence more samples from the recently reported surge of covid-19 in Nigeria” they announced, noting that, “other reported mutations such as the N501Y, A570D, and the HV 69 – 70 deletion in the spike protein have not been detected in our genomes yet, this could also be associated with the non-increase of the lineage in Nigeria currently.”

“In as much as the full effect of this mutation isn’t known yet and it is still being studied, the importance of a robust genomic surveillance system cannot be overemphasized as we can identify and report changes in the genomes of pathogens such as SARS-CoV-2 that are of public health interest,” the report said.

From the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), the Director General, Chikwe Ihekweazu, in a tweet on Sunday, said, “while we study data in Nigeria and await additional guidance from @WHO on new strains causing COVID19, travelers MUST implement travel protocol.”

Gbajabiamila congratulates Sanwo-Olu on Governor of The Year, Person of the Year awards

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila, has rejoiced with the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for being conferred with the awards of the Governor of the Year by the Leadership Newspaper and the New Telegraph Newspaper as well as Person of the Year by The Nation Newspaper.

Gbajabiamila said the three awards are testimony of Sanwo-Olu’s giant strides and good leadership style since his assumption of office as Lagos State governor last year.
The Speaker, who was elated by the awards, said Sanwo-Olu’s choice by the three newspapers could not have come at a better time as the Lagos State governor has shown that his people made the right choice during the 2019 polls by electing him to be their governor.

Gbajabiamila noted that the year 2020 has come with a major health challenge, the Covid-19 pandemic, never witnessed in recent history, but that Sanwo-Olu led from all fronts in dealing with the virus.
“I join millions of Lagosians to celebrate with our governor for this feat. There is no doubt that the three newspapers made the right choice.
“Governor Sanwo-Olu’s footprints are everywhere in Lagos for the people to see. Indeed, Lagosians are lucky to have you as their Governor at this time.
“Since the index case of Covid-19 in February in Nigeria, which came through Lagos, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has been on his feet fighting the virus from all fronts. Thank God, his efforts are not in vain.
“I want to believe that as part of the criteria used by the three newspapers in making him Governor of the Year and Person of the Year, Sanwo-Olu’s doggedness at tackling Covid-19 was considered.
“I sincerely congratulate Mr Governor on these awards,” Gbajabiamila said.

11 Corp Members Test Positive To COVID-19 At Taraba Orientation Camp

At least eleven National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members have tested positive for coronavirus Taraba State Orientation camp.

Taraba State Commissioner of Health, Innocent Vakkai disclosed this while briefing journalists in Jalingo, the state capital.

Vakkai said the corps members who tested positive are confirmed asymptomatic and are responding to treatment at an isolated centre in the state.

The Commissioner explained that the corp members were tested based on the directives by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) that all members of the scheme should be tested on arrival at various orientation camps.

The 11 corps members were discovered with the virus in Taraba State on arrival at the camp.

”So as part of the guidelines of the presidential task force on COVID-19 on the control of COVID-19 in Nigeria, they asked every state to carry out mass testing of all corps members present in camps and in Taraba state eleven corps members tested positive, but all of them were asymptomatic, that is to say, they are not showing symptoms.

”Since they are positive, the onus lies on the health authorities to ensure that they were quarantined.

”Based on the information I have so far received, they are all doing well and will soon reunite with their family as the camp closes,” he said.

Vakkai, who is also the Chairman Taskforce committee on COVID-19 in the state expressed sadness with the lack of compliance to the safety measures by residents of the state to reduce community transmission.

He insisted that there is a waiting danger ahead if the negligence is not curtailed.

He called on residents to exercise restraint and caution, especially during this Yuletide season.
