But the matter took another dimension as the mob transferred their anger on all Dangote Trailers passing through Ganaja.

The Commissioner of Police Edeh Ayuba who confirmed the accident, said the command has brought the situation under control adding that if not for the timely intervention of the Police, more havoc would have been done to Dangote Trailers and other motorists along that route.

The Incident has created a heavy gridlock on the Ganaja road, a road leading to the Eastern flank of Nigeria coupled with the increase of traffic as many people are on their way home for the Christmas.

  • Mohamed Salah speaks on Liverpool future, reveals fate with Jurgen Klopp

Mohamed Salah admits it is ‘hard to say’ how much longer he will remain with Liverpool and his future is in the hands on the Premier League champions, while he also admitted he was disappointed with Jurgen Klopp’s recent decision to overlook him for the captaincy.

The Egypt international arrived at Anfield in a £34 million deal in the summer of 2017 having rebuilt his career in Serie A following a difficult spell in England with Chelsea.

Salah has since cemented his reputation as one of world football’s most prolific forwards and played a fundamental role in Liverpool’s return to the summit of the English and European game.

The 28-year-old’s current contract doesn’t expire until 2023 and, although he insists he is intent on breaking every record available at Liverpool, he could not say where he long-term future lies.

He told AS: ‘I think Madrid and Barcelona are two top clubs. Who knows what will happen in the future, but right now I am focused on winning the Premier League and the Champions League with Liverpool again.

That’s a tough question [how long I will stay at Liverpool], but right now I can say that everything is in the hands of the club. Of course I want to break records here and, I repeat, all the club records, but everything is in the hands of the club.’

An almost unprecedented spate of injuries, meanwhile, has robbed Klopp of the services of Virgil van Dijk, Jordan Henerson and James Milner at various stages of the current campaign.

Without his most natural dressing room leaders, Klopp has been forced to share the armband around this season.

Salah was hoping to captain his team in the recent Champions League match at Midtjylland but was overlooked in favour of Trent Alexander-Arnold. ‘Honestly, I was very disappointed,’ Salah revealed.

‘I was hoping to be the captain, but it’s a coach’s decision. I accept it.’

Despite that setback, Salah played a key role in helping Liverpool overcome Tottenham in midweek and help his side move clear at the head of the Premier League table.

Klopp’s relentless winning machine, meanwhile, are due to face RB Leipzig in the next round of the Champions League and Salah is optimistic of his side’s chances of completing a domestic and European double this season.

He added: ‘I think it is a bit early to say that, but yes, we are doing well just like other teams. I hope we have the best chance of winning it.

‘I think that in recent seasons we have done well in the Champions League and also in the Premier. We had a good chance of winning both. Last season we were unlucky here. We will fight for both this year.’

  • APC endorse Gov Fayemi for 2023 presidency

APC endorse Gov Fayemi for 2023 presidency

The All Progressive Congress(APC) in Ekiti has urged the State Governor Kayode Fayemi to contest the 2023 presidential election on the party’s platform.

The ruling party said its members will drag the governor into the presidential race, if he refuses to willingly contest, saying Fayemi is eminently qualified to occupy the exalted position considering his intimidating political profile.

The state Caretaker Chairman, Hon. Paul Omotoso, spoke in Ayede-Ekiti in Oye Local Government Area of the state on Saturday during a programme organised by a chieftain of the party, Dr. Olusegun Osinkolu for 1,000 APC members in Ekiti North Senatorial District.

Omotoso who was represented by the State Publicity Secretary, Ade Ajayi, said the time has come for the president to come from Ekiti, saying it would no longer play second fiddle in the southwest’s politics.

He stated that Governor Fayemi has paid his dues in the ruling APC and Nigeria’s political firmament at large, thus deserve to be entrusted with the responsibility of leading Nigeria in 2023.

“On the 2023 presidency, the time has come for President to come from Ekiti. That is why we are pleading with you to support Governor Fayemi.

“Though Governor Fayemi has never said he wanted to contest, we will force him to plunge into the race, because of his competence, dedication, and loyalty to APC”, he said.

Omotoso added that the party at the State, local government and ward levels will reward Osinkolu, who was the Chairman of Buhari/Osinbajo Campaign Council in Ekiti in the 2019 presidential poll, for his contributions and loyalty to APC despite all odds.

“We are going to support him for the Senatorial race in 2023 because he has done well to boost the acceptability and popularity of our party in Ekiti despite that he was denied Senatorial ticket twice. He has remained loyal, contented, and committed to APC.

Osinkolu, who applauded the giant strides being made by Governor Fayemi to expand the scope of development in Ekiti, appealed to party members to eschew acrimony and work for the progress of the state, by allowing internal cohesion in APC.

Osinkolu, represented by his Personal Assistant, Mr. Ayodeji Olorunfemi, said: “I will continue to be loyal to this party and give my best to uplift APC because the party is a party of the people.

“But I beg the Caretaker committee to be fair to all members in the coming membership registration exercise. Nobody must be schemed out, it should be all-embracing and all-encompassing for the much-sought stability and peace to be achieved by Governor Mai Mala Buni-led caretaker committee.

“We must not be selfish in our bid to build a strong party. Those in privileged appointive and elective positions must help others. This is the best way we can maintain unity,” he added.

  • US approves Moderna coronavirus vaccine

The Moderna coronavirus vaccine has become the second to be approved for emergency use in the US, clearing the way for millions of doses to be distributed.

The country’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the authorisation of the jab the day after the agency’s panel of outside experts endorsed its use.

The FDA based its decision on results from a late-stage study of 30,000 volunteers that found the vaccine was nearly 95% effective at preventing illness from Covid-19.

It comes a week after the agency authorised a vaccine from Pfizer Inc and German partner BioNTech SE which has already been administered to thousands of healthcare workers.

Dr Francis Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health, said: ‘We’re not done with this but hope is on the way, and the hope comes from this scientific brain trust that has pulled out all the stops.’

Experts hope the two vaccines together will ‘break the back of the pandemic’ when combined with masks and other precautions, Dr Arnold Monto, of the University of Michigan, added.

More than 313,000 people have died of coronavirus in the US, with 3,000 new fatalities and an average of 216,000 new infections occurring each day.

President Donald Trump hailed the authorisation, tweeting: ‘Congratulations, the Moderna vaccine is now available!’

According to the government’s vaccine development programme, Operation Warp Speed, Moderna has about 5.9 million doses ready for shipment this weekend.

The vaccine must be transported to hospitals and other centers before injections begin.

Coronavirus is studded with ‘spike proteins’ that it uses to enter human cells. Covid-19 vaccines target this spike protein. The Moderna and Pfizer vaccines use synthetic messenger RNA (mRNA), a genetic material that contains information about the spike protein.

The vaccines provide the body with instructions to produce a small amount of this protein which, once detected by the immune system, leads to a protective antibody response.

Moderna’s vaccine does not require the same ultracold storage as Pfizer’s and can remain stable at normal fridge temperature for 30 days.

  • Kankara students: Nigerians should show understanding on Insecurity issues – MURIC

Kankara students: Nigerians should show understanding on Insecurity issues – MURIC

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for the successful rescue of the abducted students of Government Science Secondary School, Kankara in Katsina State.

Prof Ishaq Akintola, MURIC Director in a statement in Lagos on Saturday said that the rescue was prompt.

“The 344 boys were kidnapped from Government Science Secondary School, Kankara, Katsina State on Dec. 11, and rescued on Dec. 18, exactly one week after their abduction.

“The successful rescue operation adds another feather to President Muhammadu Buhari’s hat.

“We note with every seriousness that the early return of the boys was made possible by the president’s prompt action,” he said.

Akintola also commended the security agencies for swinging into action and mapping out a successful rescue plan.

“The fact that the pursuit began very early made it possible for the army to locate the position of the kidnapped boys and their abductors.

“It also enabled the army to surround the area. The hoodlums had no option than to surrender after a few days having realised the hopelessness of their ill-fated attack,” he said.

He called on Nigerians to exercise patience and show understanding on the security challenge facing the country, particularly insurgency and kidnapping.

“There is need to realise that it is easier for the army to face a known enemy than a faceless foe.

“Boko Haram is into guerilla warfare and that is the most difficult insurgency to stamp out.

“Their target is to rubbish government’s efforts and cause her much embarrassment as possible.

“No nation has been known to successfully and single-handedly eliminate guerilla fighters without engaging them in negotiations,” he said.

He urged Nigerians to put on their thinking caps once again in retrospect.

“For the avoidance of doubts, we are not saying the security situation is good. It is not. What we are saying is that we should show understanding.”
