  • #EndSARS: Obaseki orders escapees back to Prison, gives ultimatum

#EndSARS: Obaseki orders escapees back to Prison, gives ultimatum

The Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has given escapees from the Benin Medium Security Correctional Centre and Oko Medium Security Correctional Centre on Friday to return voluntarily or face the wrath of the law.

Following Monday’s jailbreaks in the two centres by hoodlums, the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) disclosed that 1,993 inmates escaped from their facilities.

Mr Obaseki went on an assessment tour of the affected NCoS centres and the police stations that were burnt in Benin City by the hoodlums. He was accompanied by his deputy, Philip Shaibu; a deputy inspector-general of police, Celestine Okoye; the state commissioner of police, Johnson Kokumo; representatives of the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Air Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and the Federal Road Safety Corps, among others.

However, the controller of corrections, Edo State Command, Babayo Maisanda, revealed on Wednesday that 1,818 inmates were still at large, while 163 have been re-arrested and six have returned voluntarily.

Speaking at the end of the on-the-spot assessment, Mr Obaseki lamented that the extent of destruction was massive, adding that it was against the spirit of genuine #EndSARS protesters that went about their protests in a peaceful manner.

The governor said the government would not sit down and watch hoodlums operate in such a manner, adding that the attacks on the security facilities were orchestrated by criminally minded people.

He, therefore, warned the escapees to turn themselves in at the Edo State Command of the Nigeria Police Force in Benin City for them to be returned to the correctional centres.

Mr Obaseki said, “You will agree with me that this is not in the spirit of the #EndSARS protest. This is sheer criminality while the real protesters were focusing on the reform of our policing system and not to destroy government property, destroy prisons, and release inmates.

“So, you can tell that there were some criminal intentions behind these acts and the #EndSARS protest in Edo was hijacked by criminal and they used the opportunity to come and release their colleagues who were held in our correctional centre.

“We condemn the act wholeheartedly and we expect that even the #EndSARS protesters would join us in condemning this dastardly act. The government cannot sit down and fold its arms to allow the breakdown of law and order in our society because everybody would be affected and having undertaken the assessment and seen the extent of destruction that has taken place, we would now move swiftly into action.

Lekki Tollgate: Gbajabiamila calls for thorough investigation, urges calm

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila, has described the event of the reported casualties of protesters at the Lekki Tollgate in Lagos on Tuesday night as disturbing and not reflective of the nation’s growing democracy.
Gbajabiamila, who expressed grief over the sad event and the consequent civil disturbances around the state, called for a quick and thorough investigation into the incident that led to the avoidable victims at the Lekki Tollgate.
In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Lanre Lasisi, the Speaker said: “Events in my home State Lagos, last night (Tuesday) and up until this afternoon (Wednesday), have left my heart heavy and my spirit disturbed.
“After sixty years, our democracy should have grown beyond the point where conflicting visions of nationhood result in violence on the streets and blood on the ground.
“It is unavoidably and painfully clear that there were a number of casualties as a result of gunfire at the Lekki Toll Gate.
“Therefore, there needs to be a quick and thorough investigation to determine the facts of what happened last night in Lagos. Our nation urgently needs and the Nigerian people deserve an accounting of the acts that led to the events of last night”.
While urging Nigerians to remain calm and law-abiding, Gbajabiamila noted that no blood needed to be spilled any more, saying, “I urge for calm whilst we get a truer picture of events.
“In Lagos and everywhere else, too much blood has already been spilled in our country, let there be no more.
“May God bless and keep you all. And may God bless and keep our Federal Republic of Nigeria”.

  • Nigeria’s Presidential system of government oppressive- Ex Gov. Attah

Nigeria’s Presidential system of government oppressive- Ex Gov. Attah

    By Samuel Ogenyi, Uyo

Former Governor of Akwa Ibom, Obong Victor Attah has called for the scrapping of the Presidential system of government in Nigeria saying it remained oppressive, with Nigerians not mentally prepared for it.

Attah told newsmen on Wednesday in Uyo that the  #EndSARS protests ravaging Nigeria has to do with the foundational  problem of leadership and governance in Nigeria.

Attah who made a case for a parliamentary system of government said that the Presidential system  of government reminded very expensive and wasteful for a growing economy like Nigeria.

He stated that the country needed a a rebirth, adding that the presidential system of government in Nigeria has remained the cause of her failure.

“It goes beyond governance. If you bring angels, (and I’m not blaspheming) to operate the system we have today, it would fail. The system is one that cannot succeed.
“I call it rebirth. I want Nigeria to be reborn. Let’s give it a new birth, let it become what it was always supposed to be: a federal system and preferably, I say preferably because some people still feel enamoured with this Presidential system, I am not.
“The presidential system has become very oppressive. It seems it is in our nature to feel once you win an election, you are a conqueror, so you behave exactly as you please, nobody can talk to you, you don’t have to see anybody and that’s what is happening and we abuse it.
“I read a few days ago, ‘The North wants Jonathan to come back and complete his tenure. Nobody had tenure. The constitution says yes, you can have two terms, it’s only if the people want you back. It does not mean that once elected, you have two tenures, so if you didn’t have the second one, you didn’t complete your tenure, you should come back and complete it.
“That’s why I say we are not mentally prepared for this presidential system. We are not ready; that’s one of the reasons I say scrap it, go back to the parliamentary system. In the parliamentary system, if you have a good prime minister like Britain had Margaret Thatcher, you can come back four or five times if your people want you back.
“You are a Prime Minister because you are elected from your small enclave and the whole country sees that you are good, and they insist you become prime minister. That system is what suits us now.” He explained.

Attah said that the parliamentary system would allow the people choose their representatives based on performance and not selection on party basis or godfatherism, adding that it would also solve the problem of tenure entitlement.

He added that the country was better off when she operated  four constitutions with each of the three regions having their own and one national constitution, adding that the regions did not feel cheated because they generated their own income and lived on what they were able to generate.

“The South-South/East was known for it oil palm industry, the Ijaws for mining, the West for their cocoa, and the North their groundnut, and Nigeria remained one because her leaders choose to keep the then regions before the country became independent in 1960.” He said.
