#EndSARS Protest: NUJ Urges Vigilance By Journalists

The Nigeria Union of Journalists, FCT Council, has called on its members in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, to remain vigilant following reports of violence in some parts of the territory over the #EndSARS protests.

Chairman of Council, Emmanuel Ogbeche, in a statement on Wednesday said it has become urgent for journalists to take their safety seriously as few colleagues have narrowly escaped lynching by suspected hoodlums.
“We call on all our members and media practitioners in general in the FCT to take their safety seriously. We have received reports of the near lynching of some journalists but relieved that none was hurt,” the statement said.
According to Ogbeche, journalists should have special numbers of other colleagues and security agencies on speed dial when covering protests and rallies.
He also urged them to wear reflective jackets identifying them as journalists as well as have their ID cards on them.
He advised extreme caution when on live broadcast in tensed areas, stressing that “we must stay alive to report.”
The NUJ FCT Council chairman called on security agencies especially the police to guarantee the safety of journalists at this difficult moment.

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has imposed a 24-hour curfew in Oyigbo, Obio/Akpor Local Government Areas, and some parts of Port-Harcourt following violent incidents by hoodlums who hijacked the ENDSARS protest.

In a statement by the Governor’s newly appointed Special Assistant on Media, Kelvin Ebiri, said Wike made the announcement in a state broadcast on Wednesday afternoon.

Governor Wike stated that while the State Government appreciates and commend the peaceful nature of the ongoing #EndSARS protests, it was becoming clear that the protest had been hijacked by hoodlums to unleash carnage.

“Earlier today (Wednesday), some hoodlums attacked and destroyed Police Stations and Court buildings in Oyigbo Local Government Area of the State. Another set of hooligans were also on the rampage at the Ikokwu spare parts markets disturbing public peace and damaging property,” the statement read.

The Governor asserted that the State government cannot allow trouble-makers to take the laws into their hands and use the current situation to create a state of panic and insecurity.

“A 24-hour curfew has been imposed on Mile 1, Mile 2, Emenike, Ikokwu and Iloaubuchi areas of Port Harcourt from 6.30 p.m. today 21st October 2020.”

“A 24-hour curfew has been imposed on the entire Oyigbo Local Government Area from 6.30 p.m. today, 21st October 2020; a 24-hour curfew has also been imposed on Oil mill area in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area” while directing security agencies to enforce the curfew accordingly.

The statement also directed council chairmen to mobilize vigilantes and work with security agencies to ensure that no hoodlum is allowed to disturb the peace or destroy lives and property in their Local Government Areas.

“We urge all citizens to remain vigilant and report all suspicious characters to the security agencies for immediate action. Let me appeal to our youths not to allow themselves to be used to roll-back the peace we are enjoying in the State under any pretext” Wike added.

#EndSARS: Life doesn’t matter to a clueless leader –Fayose

A former governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, has condemned the attack on #EndSARS protesters at Lekki toll gate, Lagos State.

Fayose made the displeasure known in a series of tweets on Wednesday.

He also condemned the silence of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), over the killings of #EndSARS protesters.

He tweeted, “My heart is heavy. Like every other concerned Nigerians, I’m worried. I’m sad that soldiers were sent to shoot at our youths, who were only expressing their anger against the system.

“I sympathize with families of the deaths and pray that God will heal the injured.

“However, the sad reality we must face now is that the current situation in our nation is a result of allowing a clearly incompetent man to ascend to the highest office in the land. I saw all these coming and I warned Nigerians. You can’t wear a white robe on a pig.

“Life does not matter to a clueless leader whose only fulfilment is that he is called Mr. President. He cares about no one except himself. That’s why up till now, the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has not said a word. Sad.”

  • #EndSARS: Restrain the military — Obasanjo warns Buhari

#EndSARS: Restrain the military — Obasanjo warns Buhari

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has condemned the use of brute force to quell protests at the Lekki tollgate.

He added that it was obvious that the President Muhammadu Buhari, and his lieutenants didn’t exhaust all avenues before deploying soldiers.

Obasanjo said this in a statement titled, ‘Statement on Violence Against Protesters In Nigeria: An Appeal for Calm’.

The former President called on Buhari to “restrain the military and other security agencies from using brute force as a way of ending the crisis.”

He said history had shown that killing protesters only worsens the crisis and makes dialogue impossible.

The former President said, “The shooting and murder of unarmed protesters, no matter the level of provocation, has never been effective in suppressing public anger and frustration. Instead, such actions only reinforce the anger and frustration of the populace and close the window of dialogue and peaceful resolution.

“It is clear that Mr President and his lieutenants did not exhaust the opportunities for dialogue with the protesters before resorting to the use of force.”

Obasanjo said it was worse that despite overwhelming evidence, the authorities were still denying ever killing protesters.

He therefore called on the President to take swift action before things spiral out of control.

The former President stated, “It is worse that there is a denial of wrongdoing in spite of overwhelming visual evidence. Great harm has been done but it can be stopped before it completely spirals out of control.

“We are at a critical moment in this crisis and the President must act now before it is too late. This time demands leadership and mature leadership at such.”

He said most of the demands made by the #EndSARS protesters which had been conveyed to the President by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State were not unrealistic.

Obasanjo added that these demands could be implemented without anyone’s political interest or ambition being threatened.

The former President said, “It is imperative that leaders at all levels, starting with Mr President, must demonstrate meekness, humanity and sincerity in meeting the legitimate demands of the protesters and ensuring that justice is served where it must be served. These are the potent ways of ending this crisis now.”

The former President also called on the youths to give peace a chance, adding that the destruction and looting must stop.

He said targeting people would only widen the existing divisions in the country.

Obasanjo said, “The youth must give peace a chance while making their legitimate demands. They must be mindful of miscreants who will infiltrate their ranks and give the protests a bad name so that trigger-happy forces will kill them.

“The destruction and looting of public and private properties will only hurt all of us and set us back.”
