SOKAPU accuses Army of Killing 200 level student, cousin during protest

    … Victims buried

    By Ujah Simon, kaduna

Southern Kaduna people’s Union (SOKAPU), has accused the Nigeria army of killing two persons during a protest by youths against three months Curfew imposed on their community in Sanga local government area of Southern part of kaduna State.

Those killed, include Emmanuel Nuhu 20, a 200 level student of Kaduna State College of Education, Gidan Waya and his cousin, Tina Julius 34, married with 4 children.
The victims have been “buried in their separate homes after a grim funeral service at the 1st ECWA Church, Fadan Karshi, in Sanga, the Local Government. Same area where the deputy governor of Kaduna State, Haj Hadiza Balarabe hails from, according to SOKAPU.

The statement issued and made available to journalists in Kaduna on Thursday by SOKAPU stated that the two were shot dead last Sunday (11th October, 2020) by armed personnel of Operation Safe Haven (OpSH) during a peaceful demonstration staged by the youths of the town against an unofficial curfew imposed on the town by OpSH, made up of the military and paramilitary personnel, since June 2020.

Signed by the national public relations officer of SOKAPU Mr, Luka Binniyat, the statement disclosed that those killed were buried on Wednesday morning,14th October, 2020, by the community.

“Two were shot dead last Sunday(11th October, 2020 by armed personnel of Operation Safe Haven (OpSH) during a peaceful demonstration stage by the youths of the town against an unofficial curfew imposed over the town by OpSH made up of the military and paramilitary personnel since June this year”, it stated.
SOKAPU stated that “Findings showed that the curfew was enforced with severe brutality that spared not even elderly and respectable members of the small town who found themselves outside only during the 6pm -6am curfew hours. Yet, there had been no case of any breach of public peace in Fadan Karshi for years now.
“Fadan Karshi, a busy junction town with high commercial activities has been greatly affected by the three and half months curfew and some residents have had to leave the town out of frustration and fear.

“It was based on the negative consequences of the over three months curfew that youths of the town staged a peaceful protest to the palace of the District Head of Fadan Karshi, Very Reverend (Dr.) Joel Galadima (retired), last Sunday afternoon, calling on him to appeal to Operation Safe Heaven, stationed in the area to lift the curfew.

In the process, armed members of Operation Safe Haven appeared at the scene.

“Our investigation showed that about a week earlier, Emmanuel Nuhu was severely brutalized by soldiers of the OpSH during a misunderstanding between him and some other person, after which his dad, a poor farmer, who is hardly literate, treated his son of the injuries he sustained and left the rest to God, as narrated to SOKAPU.

According to SOKAPU, when the OpSH arrived the scene of the peaceful demonstration, a soldier (who residents said, is notorious for his brutality and can identify him any time) sighted Emmanuel Nuhu. He cocked his gun and fired at armless youth.

“The bullet hit him, but he managed to make a dashed to the nearest wall. Before he could scale the wall, another bullet got him on the leg as the youths scampered into safety in panic.

“Tina Julius, on seeing that her cousin was shot, started screaming hysterically. This seemed to have irritated another armed OpSH personnel (a mobile police man) who also cocked his gun and shot the mother of four children in the head and she died on the spot. “Meanwhile the soldier that had earlier shot Nuhu followed him into the compound of late Silas Jamu ( over whose wall he had jumped into) and found him helpless in the pool of his blood, shot him again in the heart and finished him up. The OpSH team then left”, it stated

It further stated that “After their grisly murder, the youths became livid and became violent. They burnt down the palace of the District Head and a police vehicle and mounted roadblocks in anger, which SOKAPU does not support.

“When SOKAPU reached out to Sector Commander of Operation Safe Haven in charge of the Area, one Major Ezeigbo, denied that a curfew was imposed over Fadan Karshi.

He said it was “an order of restriction of movement” introduced by him after he discovered that there was too much criminality in the town, according to his claims.

According to SOKAPU, the Sector commander said that the town was a fertile ground for criminals and that there were more criminals among the youths of the town than good ones.

“He said that the demonstration by the youths was violent and that they attacked his men and even injured some. He said that the youths were armed and were firing at his men from behind. He denied that Emmanuel Nuhu was chased into a compound and finally shot dead. He said that Nuhu was shot at the scene of the demonstration.

“On the killing of Tina, he said he didn’t know how she got shot. But when the incident was getting ugly, he ordered his men out, according to him.

He later ensured that the road blocks were cleared for traffic to flow, he said.

“SOKAPU wants to make it unequivocally clear that it appreciate and acknowledge the good and risky work that Officers and Men of OpSH, under the command of Major General Chukwu Emeka are doing to secure Southern Kaduna.

“And we have always mobilised for its support from all our communities. But he must rein on his troops to stop the use of crude and brute force on our already traumatized communities.

“For emphasis, we condemned in very strong terms the abuse of power and deployment of cruelty on harmless civilians.

The killings of Emmanuel Nuhu and Tina Julius must not be swept under the carpet. We call on the Minister of Defense, Chief of Defense Staff, the Chief of Army Staff and all relevant government authorities to immediately launch an investigation into the killings of these two young Nigerian citizens,

“The process and findings should be made public”, it stated.

SOKAPU called for the immediate lifting of the illegal curfew foisted Fadan Karshi.

“We are also calling on the Nigeria Human Rights Commission, Amnesty International, Civil Liberty Organization all Human Rights groups and all men and women of goodwill to show interest in this case”, it added.

Transiting From Monogamy To Polygamy Are Two Different Institutions-Professor Tawakkaltu

    By Muhammad Goronyo, Sokoto

Professor Tawakkaltu Oyebode Tahir has unveiled her book. “A Room Of Her Own,Transition From Monogamy To Polygamy”.

Speaking Saturday at the unveiling she said the book was borne out of the passionate desire to change the negative narratives of Polygamy in the Muslim community.

She spoke at the Tamaje Civic Hall in Sokoto. The author noted that it is a book that intends to serve as a wake-up call on Muslim men and women to fear Allah in their marriages as well as to see that Islamic Polygamy becomes a win-win for men and women, that it becomes a tool for the building of a unified and enviable Islamic homes and not a tool for destruction of homes among others.

Professor Tawakkaltu further explained that in recent times, there have been unpleasant stories of women who take rash decisions in response to their husbands’ desire to pursue Polygamy and lack of information on how to navigate the overwhelming emotions that naturally accompany the transition is one of the major contributions to some of those reactions.

While reviewing the book,Professor Amamatu Maishanu Tambuwal said a woman is married for four reasons as ” her beauty, her wealth, her lineage or her faith and good character “.

” In many books I read that talked about Polygamy, none elaborated fully on Polygamy, most of the authors viewed Polygamy from the perspective of a man only as nobody can understand the situation of Polygamy unless the person has the experience.

“In fact,Polygamy is just like a labour during child birth and only the woman that has gone through it understands it”. She said.

The chief launcher,Yakubu Mu’azu Mayana and speaker after speaker all commended the author for the tedious work she has undergone in putting the book together.

They all agreed that the book was well researched and that it explains thoroughly what Polygamy entails.

  • Gov. Zulum declares Monday for statewide fasting and prayers in Borno State

Gov. Zulum declares Monday for statewide fasting and prayers in Borno State

Borno Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum on Saturday, held separate meetings with Islamic, and Christian leaders after which he declared Monday, October 19 as day for second round of statewide fasting and prayers for enduring peace in the state.

In a media address, Zulum also explained that his regular trips to front lines were not out of pride or attract attention but rather to satisfy his conscience and discharge his obligations to the people of Borno.

Borno Governor declares Monday for statewide fasting and prayers

Borno Governor declares Monday for statewide fasting and prayers The governor said, ‘I will like to start by, once again, registering our depth of eternal gratitude to the good people of Borno State for the overwhelming support and sincere goodwill our administration has been accorded in the last 17 months,”

“Nothing I say here or anywhere else can best describe the extent of my gratitude to the people of Borno and many Nigerians outside Borno. We have been shown enormous love and support from day one till date. Above being loved and supported, the people of Borno State have proved to trust us and have faith in what we do.

“For me, one of the greatest feats a leader can attain is to earn the trust and confidence of those being led. On the other hand, the worst thing that can happen to any leader is to lose the trust and confidence of the people. Trust is a burden. When people trust you, they invest their fears and hopes in you and they leave you to your own conviction, your own decisions, and most importantly, they leave you to your fear of Allah or the lack of it.

“We are grateful for the trust the people have shown to us and I do solemnly reaffirm that Bi-iznillah, we will not betray the trust and confidence reposed in us by the people of Borno. As humans, we will continue to do whatever we can, within the limit of our resources and laws, to stand firm in our fight against Boko Haram, and in economic recovery, reconstruction, rehabilitation and resettlement efforts.

“Fellow citizens of Borno, in the midst of our firmness, individual and shared commitments to Borno State, we must always recognize that the kind of challenge Borno is facing, is one that is complex.

“Our gallant armed forces in the military, police, DSS, paramilitary and our courageous volunteers in the Civilian JTF, hunters and vigilantes are facing enemies who conceal their identities. We are in battle with an insurgent group which has the advantage of laying ambush from rain-grown grasses, and who oftentimes, use the uniforms of soldiers and Civilian JTF to conceal their movements and presence on our highways.

“Quite often, they pretend to be Nigerian soldiers until their victims are in defenseless positions. These realities account for the notoriety of Boko Haram, especially in these days when rain-fed grasses on highways give them opportunities to hide and ambush their targets.

Oftentimes, I have been confronted with risks of moving around some areas, especially in Northern Borno. As a human being, as a father and husband, I, of course, do not seek harm for myself or anyone.

“But then, as a leader, I have often asked myself: should I remain in peaceful Maiduguri where there are less challenges and ignore local government areas where Borno’s challenges actually are? Should we all just sit in Maiduguri and wait till whenever Boko Haram chooses to give us peace?

“The reality of our situation creates a conflict between our human needs for safety versus our conscience and obligation to those we represent. It is not an issue of pride, boasting or to catch the limelight. It is an issue of conscience and obligation.

As we gathered to hold meetings with religious groups here in Maiduguri, there are more than a million homeless fellow citizens who are living in camps at Monguno, Kala-Balge, Ngala, and other parts of Borno. Are we going to ignore their existence by refusing to give them food and get them homes to live and earn livelihoods? Or are we going to converge all the people of Borno to come to Maiduguri? What about those who are not willing to leave their communities?

“The solution lies in continued and genuine determination of our armed forces with the support of our gallant volunteers. We all have roles to play in supporting the military and volunteers in ways that we all can.

One of the easiest ways all citizens can continue to help is never to associate with the insurgents, to pass useful information to security forces and to consistently pray for our armed forces and volunteers. Our prayers should include those risking their lives, including humanitarian workers and those who undertake reconstruction works in communities.

“It is against this background that I called for today’s meeting with His Eminence, the Shehu of Borno, the Chief Imam and Imams of Juma’at mosques. We have rubbed minds. I also met with leadership of our Christian brothers and sisters who have consistently shown sincere commitment to our togetherness.

Fellow citizens of Borno State, as an outcome of today’s consultation, I hereby declare Monday, the 19th day of October 2020 as a second day for statewide fasting and prayers for peace in Borno State. I will like to request, with gratitude, that we approach the fast with the same enthusiasm, devotion and faithfulness as we did on Monday February 24, 2020.

“I will like to clarify that there will be no public holiday on Monday and there will be no dramatic gatherings. What is required is the purity of our intentions and submission to Allah as we fast and pray from our homes, offices, market shops, other businesses and places of legitimate endeavours.

“One of the key goals of fasting together is deferring to the Almighty as a community in worship and hope. Fasting together would also remind us of the realities we face and strengthen the faith and patriotism of our military and volunteers in frontlines as well as others who risk their lives for humanitarian and reconstruction courses.

“Our fast in worship should very well include prayers against anyone funding or supporting Boko Haram in any way, and prayers against anyone who consciously benefits from the Boko Haram crisis by any means.

“We cannot afford to lag in our steady call upon God to free Borno. The role of prayers, especially one that is combined with practical human efforts, is very critical in our kind of battle that has raged for far too long, with huge and negative consequences.

He concluded, “May Allah accept our prayers and may peace return to Borno, all parts of the northeast and Nigeria.”

Recall that in August, SaharaReporters revealed how Daura was flown to the United Kingdom for urgent medical treatment over an undisclosed ailment.

He was said to have been flown in a private jet to the UK after exhibiting respiratory difficulties with symptoms similar to Coronavirus.

He is said to have had a history of renal crisis and had regularly visited the West for medical attention.

Despite these revelations, the Presidency claimed that the former journalist travelled to UK for leisure and not for medical reasons.

In September this year, Daura was unable to attend the wedding of Hanan, President Buhari’s daughter, due to his poor health despite being scheduled to be the father of the day for that occasion.

The absence of Daura at the event remained a major talking point among major political players especially considering his closeness to President Buhari.
