Caught in crossfire, Indians in China battle a sense

CHENNAI: As a diplomatic cold war raged between India and China over the Galwan Valley skirmish, Indian expats in China watched with trepidation a nationalist backlash that left them exposed to a vicious troll army on social media. Thousands of software professionals, garment exporters and businessmen settled for years in Dalian’s software hub, Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Guangzhou are being dragged into the border crisis and dubbed traitors and unpatriotic.
These Indians, some of them married to local Chinese woman, are now suffering pangs of guilt, exacerbated by the trolls coming hard at them for refusing to return home. But even as they bear the brunt of vitriolic hashtag campaigns like #Indiansunitedagainstchina and #Indianswillcrushchina, most Indian expats have good reasons to stay on.
The Covid-19 pandemic is no more a worry. Only 490 who lost jobs in China enlisted to board the Vande Bharat evacuation flights on June 20 and 29.
‘Staying back in China for jobs doesn’t make anyone a traitor’
It is unlike many other countries where thousands of Indians are waiting to return home.
In Shenzhen, it is back to near normal for Shashi Shiraguppi and his family — wife Li Lan and their two children. “There is no panic. We have complete freedom and have no problems with local authorities. Neighbours are friendly and concerned for our well-being. Why should we want to return to India?” Shashi, a native of Bengaluru, told TOI over phone.
Shashi, who moved to this south China town 17 years ago, manages a YouTube channel ‘Shashi4x’. For this family, it’s no gain, no loss whoever (India or China) wins or loses the border war. “Let there be peace during the pandemic,” said Li Lan, Shashi’s Chinese wife.
According to the 2010 Census in China, of the six lakh foreign nationals (now one million), Indian expats constituted 3% of the population. Dismissing suggestions of tension in Dalian, software profession A Kumar said “98% normalcy” had returned to this port city in China’s Liaoning Province in the north. “We were watching channels here for news on the battle at the border. After the standoff began, I am unable to access the one Indian newspaper portal I was reading,” said Kumar, operations manager of the US-based software firm Artech China.
It’s a different narrative in the Chinese media that’s blaming India for the “unprovoked attack” at its border. “The news here is entirely different. Both India and China are trying to justify their actions,” said Kumar, who grew up in Delhi-NCR and took up the job in Dalian in 2008.
As for life as an Indian in China, Kumar said marketplaces have opened, public transport is back on the roads and the pandemic is under control. “For us, it is the safest here in China when the Covid pandemic is raging across the globe.”
Dalian’s IT hub has a significant Indian presence with 15,000 software professionals. “It is unnecessary hype on social media. The locals are friendly and they have huge respect for Indians,” said V Vijay, who works for a US-headquartered software firm in Dalian.
Back in India’s hosiery hub Tirupur, S A Oviya, who was doing her house surgency at Dalian Medical University, said she returned home for the December holidays. Her father, an ophthalmic assistant in a public health centre, is keen for her to return to Dalian to complete the course before she takes the Foreign Medical Graduate Exam.
Eagerness to remain in secure jobs in China amid hostilities with India does not make anyone a traitor, say expats who hold work permits. “This does not make us less patriotic either,” said Vijay, who has been helping Indians who have been laid off to return home

In the dragon’s den: Indians in China on what life is like in the country amid a stand-off between two nations

It’s an Asian country with first world infrastructure, “so you get the best of both worlds,”says the journalist-turnedfreelance writer. “You can’t imagine the construction activities and upgrading that go on. Buildings to buses, everything looks new. It’s also very green.” There’s an upbeat vibe in cities as well as the interiors of the country, and there is little visible disparity of wealth. “I love how old people spontaneously put on music and break into a dance on the streets or do Tai Chi.”

The state, she says, plans extensively to help the most vulnerable. “For instance, post pandemic, there have been micro-specific policy actions to help businesses recover. Taxes are being restructured in such a way that people get actual monetary relief. It’s one of the major reasons why China has turned around so fast.”

While Bhattacharya hasn’t experienced any anti-India sentiment, she has observed a particular bias towards white people, “which sometimes translates to prejudice against black people”.

The vice-president of Döhler Group has clocked a decade in China with his family and even turned down an opportunity to move to the US. “It was a bit of a shock for my boss,” says Waikar, who received the prestigious Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award from President Ram Nath Kovind last year. The son of an Army doctor, he admits he initially had doubts about what his father referred to as “dushman desh” (enemy country). But his opinions were quickly revised. “They are an extremely hardworking and sincere people. My domestic help hasn’t been absent or even late once in 10 years,” he shares.

Also, most importantly, there’s a clear line between politics and business. “This is what defines the Chinese. For them, business is god,” says Waikar, who hails from Nagpur. “Their strongest political opponents — Japan, Taiwan and the US — are also their biggest business partners. Once you recognise and respect this, dealing with them becomes uncomplicated. And like us, they value connections a lot.”

There’s no hostility when it comes either. “It’s not enforced. People in mainland China don’t know about the 1960s aggression, and there’s barely any mention of the current stand-off in the mainstream media.” Waikar and his wife, Aparna, especially appreciate the respectful attitude towards women. “I see smartly dressed young women managing toll booths on highways at 3 am and they have nothing to fear. It makes me wonder when we’ll have that in India,” he says.

The chief technology officer with EOC Pharma has been working in the pharmaceutical research sector in China since 2007. “The country has a very strong indigenous new drug research sector, thanks to its policies on innovation, patents and incentives,” says Deepak Hegde, who’s from Thane. “Biotechnology is one of the key strategic areas for the government, and they have projects locked down for at least the next 10 years.”

Concerns over strained international relations post the Covid outbreak haven’t slowed them down. “Here, the backlash is widely seen as political because of the stand-off with the US. But there’s no negativity in the scientific field. Three Covid-19 vaccines are already in phase III of development,” says Hegde, adding that the levels of Chinese professionalism and civility never fail to amaze him. “As Indians, my family and I have never experienced hostility during political tensions between the countries. People are always respectful and welcoming.”

Hegde adds that the Chinese government’s systematic handling of the lockdown has been exemplary. “Remember, the pandemic struck here in the end of January during the Chinese New Year, when millions travel across the country,” he points out.

Despite the mass migration, the government managed to control it with the help of infrastructure, technology and the application of artificial intelligence. The 1,000-bed Huoshenshan Hospital in Wuhan was built in 10 days. Medical insurance is provided by the state, and the quality of healthcare at government hospitals is comparable to India’s best private hospitals.”

The education system in China is as robust as it gets, says Dorle, who holds an administrative position at the Shanghai American School. In a cosmopolitan city like Shanghai, there are many international schools catering to different syllabi. Local schools are either bilingual or instruct in Chinese. “Public school education is excellent. The standard of education at even ordinary public schools is high,” says Dorle, who moved to China from the US in 2010, as her husband, Samir’s job took him there.

Diversity and inclusion is managed through policies. “Organisations, schools and colleges included, have regulations to filter out racism and genderrelated biases,” says Dorle, who hails from Aurangabad. Schools strive to have a 50-50 ratio and the education about equal treatment percolates into daily life as well. “As a woman, you never feel unsafe.”

The warm-heartedness of the people made Dorle feel quite at home, even before she picked up what she calls “survival Chinese” — basic linguistic skills. “When people spot my mother or mother-inlaw in saris, they make an effort to interact, despite the language barrier, sometimes even take a picture,” she says. “There’s special respect for Indians because Buddhism is widely followed, and the Buddha hails from India.”

BREAKING: IGP orders Ondo police commissioner to restore deputy gov’s security details

The Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has ordered the Commissioner of Police in Ondo State, Bolaji Salami, to restore the security details of the state’s Deputy Governor, Agboola Ajayi, with immediate effect.

The IGP’s directive was contained in a memo addressed to the police commissioner through the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Operations, Force Headquarters Abuja on Monday.

Our correspondent reports that men of the Nigeria Police attached to the deputy governor were withdrawn after he had defected to the Peoples Democratic Party from the ruling All Progressives Congress.

Ajayi had, last Wednesday, cried out that his life was in danger when policemen attached to his office were withdrawn on the orders of the Commissioner of Police in the state.

The memo with Ref. No CB: 2002/DOPS/FHQ/ABJ/VOL/77/168 was signed on behalf of the IGP by Austine Agbonlahor, Assistant Inspector-General of Police.

The deputy governor, who accused the Commissioner of Police of working on the instructions of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu to withdraw the officers, had for a while, been having a running battle with him.

Ajayi had engaged in a confrontation with the police at the Government House following the alleged refusal of the latter to allow him to leave the premises allegedly on the orders of the governor.

Meanwhile, the deputy governor had in a statement released by his Media Aide, Mr Babatope Okeowo, lauded “the integrity and courage displayed by the majority of the lawmakers for shunning all entreaties, inducement, and intimidation to impeach him”.

The statement also urged lawmakers to also shun another latest plan to move the next meeting of the impeachment plot to a private hotel in Akure

Fear grips A’Ibom Govt House staff as more test positive

    By Samuel Ogenyi, Uyo

Staff of Akwa Ibom Government House are now living in palpable fear following the growing spread of the virus in their offices.

Recall that 16 members of the government House Press Corps last month tested positive to the virus and were all relocated to the isolation centre at the Ibom Specialist Hospital for treatment.

Other journalists who had contacts with members of the press corps were duly followed up for a period of two weeks.

Anonymous sources at the Government House told newsmen on Monday that Governor Udom Emmanuel, moved by the effect of the virus within the press corps ordered a for aggressive testing of other units within the government house.

“It should shock you that within two days we recorded 17 and 18 cases respectively. Both domestic staff, protocol, security and others working in government house were; on the order of His Excellency subjected to test, and most of them turned out positive”. He said

The source expressed concerns that the increasing rate of infected persons within the government house, to a very great extent, revealed how unsafe the entire state could be.

“These ones are close to the Governor and have the opportunity to be tested and treated, what happens to those who have no such opportunity? Our people may just begin to die massively. We need to do more testing, we need to test those are are not close to the corridors of power”. He said

A broadcaster in the state was arrested and detained for alleging that nine Commissioners in the state were infected with Covid-19 prompting Governor Udom Emmanuel to parade all his Commissioners before newsmen to falsify the broadcaster’s claims.

The government house source in reaction to such experience expressed sadness and querried, “members of the press corps throughout the lockdown worked closely with members of the state executive council, how then did most of them test positive to Covid-19 if the people they worked closely with were as clean as claimed”.

The state commissioner for informationam Mr Charles Udoh, when contacted did not deny that more staff of the Government House could have tested positive to Covid-19.

Udoh however said that key persons in the State Incidence Management Committee and principal staff of the Government House have not tested positive.

“Ekerette Udoh, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor is not positive, the Secretary to the State Government is not positive and these are the people that we meet everyday.

“Dr Akpabio, the Governor’s personal physician and Dr Nathaniel Adiakpan, the Permanent Secretary Government House are not positive and as far as I am concerned, no commmissioner is positive.” He said

  • FG DECLARES OBINNA UZOH, ANANI CLETUS, AROH IFUNANYA AND FAITH SAMUEL WANTED

FG DECLARES OBINNA UZOH, ANANI CLETUS, AROH IFUNANYA AND FAITH SAMUEL WANTED

The Federal Government through the Nigerian Police Force has declared Obinna Uzoh, Anani Cletus, Ifunanya Aroh and Faith Samuel wanted in relation to offences bordering on criminal conspiracy, forgery and perjury, falsification of facts and falsification of court judgement to clandestinely remove Senator Ifeanyi Ubah from office as the Senator representing Anambra South in the Ninth National Assembly.

Pursuant to a warrant of arrest issued by a Chief Magistrate Court in Abuja, in a special police gazette bulletin: CR:300/X/LEG/ , FHQ/ABJ/VOL.8/56 published by the central criminal registry of the Force Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department(FCIID), the Police requested anyone with useful information on the whereabouts of the suspects to arrest and handover the suspects to the nearest Police Station or the legal prosecution section of the FCIID, or call 08125151772.

In a related development, in charge no:FHC/ABJ/CR/78/2020 between the Federal Government and Eziafa Samuel which came up for trial before Honorable Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court Abuja, the defendant; Eziafa Samuel is currently standing trial for conspiracy and forgery of court documents in an alleged cloned suit: CV/3044/2018 which was obtained clandestinely to oust Senator Ifeanyi Ubah from office.

At the last sitting on Friday; June 26th, 2020, the defendant; Eziafa Samuel applied to the court to adjourn the matter on the basis that he was ill. The court in a considered ruling dismissed his application on the basis that there was no affidavit and medical evidence before the court. The Court thereafter adjourned the case to Monday; June 29th, 2020.

At the resumed hearing today, the prosecution counsel brought to the knowledge of the court, the absence of the defendant and posited that the action of the defendant is a deliberate attempt to stall trial; an action which is a breach of his undertaking to attend trial on bail and disrespect to the authority of the court. Pursuant to section 184 ACJA, the prosecution counsel applied for the arrest of the defendant and for his sureties to appear before the court and show cause why their bail bond shouldn’t be forfeited to the Federal Government.

In a considered ruling, the Court held that there was no cogent reason for the absence of the defendant which is a challenge to the authority of the court. The court noted that it has the power to issue a bench warrant for arrest of the defendant, but that it would decline to issue a warrant at this stage and give the defendant another opportunity to appear in court for his trial on Thursday July 2,2020. The matter was therefore adjourned to Thursday; July 2, 2020.

  • Breaking: Desperate Iran issues warrant arrest against Trump, others over death of its general

Breaking: Desperate Iran issues warrant arrest against Trump, others over death of its general

Iran on Monday issued warrant of arrest against US President Donald Trump. It also asked Interpol for help in arresting and detaining the US president and dozens of others it believes carried out the drone strike that killed a top Iranian general in Baghdad.

According to a local Tehran prosecutor Ali Alqasimehr Trump and more than 30 others whom Iran accuses of involvement in the Jan. 3 strike that killed Gen. Qassem Soleimani in Baghdad face “murder and terrorism charges,” the state-run IRNA news agency reported.

Alqasimehr did not identify anyone else sought other than Trump, but stressed that Iran would continue to pursue his prosecution even after his presidency ends.

Interpol, based in Lyon, France, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Alqasimehr also was quoted as saying that Iran requested a “red notice” be put out for Trump and the others, which represents the highest level arrest request issued by Interpol. Local authorities end up making the arrests on behalf of the country that request it. The notices cannot force countries to arrest or extradite suspects, but can put government leaders on the spot and limit suspects’ travel.

After receiving a request, Interpol meets by committee and discusses whether or not to share the information with its member states. Interpol has no requirement for making any of the notices public, though some do get published on its website.

It is unlikely Interpol would grant Iran’s request as its guideline for notices forbids it from “undertaking any intervention or activities of a political” nature.

The U.S. killed Soleimani, who oversaw the Revolutionary Guard’s expeditionary Quds Force, and others in the January strike near Baghdad International Airport. It came after months of incidents raising tensions between the two countries and ultimately saw Iran retaliate with a ballistic missile strike targeting American troops in Iraq.

Associated Press writers Jon Gambrell in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and Angela Charlton in Paris contributed to this report.
