Gunmen kill 21 in fresh Zamfara attacks

Armed gangs have killed 21 people in the latest bloody assaults on villages in restive northwest Nigeria, police said.

Assailants trying to steal cattle shot dead 15 people in clashes with local residents in six remote communities of Zamfara state on Tuesday, regional police spokesman Mohammed Shehu said.

The gunmen — dubbed “bandits” by the authorities — returned the next day and shot dead six mourners at funerals for the earlier victims, the statement released Thursday said.

Nigeria’s northwest has been wracked by years of violence, involving clashes between rival communities over land, attacks by heavily armed gangs and retaliation strikes from vigilante groups.

The unrest, which experts say has been spurred by overpopulation and climate change, has seen an estimated 8,000 people killed since 2011 and 200,000 flee their homes.

Last week dozens were killed when armed gangs raided a string of villages in nearby Sokoto state.

Nigeria’s military last month said it had launched air raids to try to stop the attacks.

Authorities have conducted repeated security operations and local peace negotiations but have failed to end the bloodshed.

COVID-19: WHO resumes clinical trial of Hydroxychloroquine

The World Health Organization has resumed its trial of hydroxychloroquine, after a temporary suspension of the trial for purported safety concerns.

W.H.O’s director general, Tedros Ghebreyesus said at a news conference in Geneva, that the Data Safety Monitoring Board decided there was no reason to discontinue the international trial after reviewing available data on the drug.

Last week, WHO announced suspension of the trial of the drug, popular for the treatment of malaria after a medical journal published that hospitalized Covid-19 patients treated with hydroxychloroquine had a higher risk of death than those who didn’t take it.

Numerous clinical trials are looking to see if it is effective in fighting Covid-19, but it is not yet a proven treatment.

AfDB board supports Adesina, agrees on independent review of ethics committee report

The bureau of the board of governors of the African Development Bank (AfDB) says it approves of the investigation carried out by its ethics committee into whistleblower allegations levelled against Akinwumi Adesina, president of the bank.

In a communique signed by Niale Kaba, chairperson of the bureau of the board of governors, the bureau said it has agreed to authorise an independent review of the committee’s report in the interest of due process and the “need to carry every governor along in resolving it”.

“The bureau reiterates that it agrees that the ethics committee of the board of directors performed its role on this matter in accordance with the applicable rule under resolution B/BG/2008/11 of the board of governors,” the communique read

“The independent review shall be conducted by a neutral high calibre individual with unquestionable experience, high international reputation and integrity within a short time period of not more than two to four weeks maximum, taking the bank group’s electoral calendar into account.

The US had demanded an independent probe of the allegations after the ethics committee cleared Adesina.

In a letter signed by Steven Mnuchin, its treasury secretary, the US government said it had ” deep reservations about the integrity of the committee’s process”.

The AfDB bureau also said it has agreed to an “independent comprehensive review of the implementation of the bank group’s whistle-blowing and complaints handling policy” within a three to six month period after the review of the ethics committee report.

This, it said, would ensure that the whistleblower policy is “properly implemented and revising it where necessary to avoid situations of this nature in the future”.

Several stakeholders, including 15 ex-presidents of African countries, have voiced their support for Adesina.

President Muhammadu Buhari has also assured Adesina of his support.

Adesina has denied all the allegations levelled against him.

  • Lawan Leads Senate Delegation On Solidarity Visit To Kalu After Release From Kuje

Lawan Leads Senate Delegation On Solidarity Visit To Kalu After Release From Kuje

Senate President Ahmad Lawan on Thursday led a delegation on solidarity visit to Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, following the Chief Whip’s release from Kuje correctional facility.

Senator Kalu was recently released from Kuje following the orders of a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos.

Kalu had been sentenced to 12 years imprisonment after he was initially found guilty of conspiring and diverting N7.65bn from the Abia State coffers, during his time as governor.

The two-time governor and two others were found guilty of the N7.65billion fraud, in an amended 39 counts which was filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

However, after spending a few months behind bars, the lawmaker was set free by the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos.

Justice Mohammed Liman ordered Senator Kalu’s release on the 2nd of June 2020, after listening to an application filed by the former governor.

Senator Kalu, had urged the court to set aside his conviction on December 5, 2019, by Justice Mohammed Idris.

He explained that this became necessary since the Supreme Court, in its verdict delivered on May 8, 2020, held that Justice Idris gave the judgment without jurisdiction.

Justice Liman had on May 20 fixed Tuesday for the hearing of the application filed by Senator Kalu after the suit was assigned to him.

At the hearing of the application, Counsel to Senator Kalu, Lateef Fagbemi, asked Justice Liman to order the release of the former governor following the pronouncement of the Supreme Court.

According to him, the application was made pursuant to Section 159 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act.

On his part, Counsel to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Rotimi Jacobs, did not oppose the application.

He noted that the case had dragged for over 13 years and it was better for the trial to proceed immediately so that parties would not lose more time.

The EFCC counsel also asked the court to ensure that the order of the Supreme Court for trial to start afresh be complied with, so that all parties could come before the court for a fresh arraignment and trial of the defendants.

In a summary judgment, Justice Liman held that Orji Kalu’s application seeking his freedom was meritorious.

He also ordered the EFCC to file its processes for a fresh arraignment of the defendants after which the date for trial would be communicated to all parties in the case.

Below are some photos from the solidarity visit as led by the Senate President.

The emergency exercise is expected to take place within the metropolitan LGAs such as Taurani, Nasarawa, and Kano municipal, where most of the confirmed positive cases of COVID-19 are concentrated.

Governor Ganduje disclosed this on Thursday at a press briefing organised by the State Task Force on COVID-19.

He said, “We are putting our emphasis within the eight metropolitan Local Government Areas. We are engaging in house-to-house sample collection.

“I think during the political campaign, some politicians engaged in a house-to-house campaign. Right now, for COVID-19, we are engaging in a house-to-house sample collection campaign.”

According to the governor, the state has always improved on its successes in the fight against COVID-19 which is a result of the commitment of the Task Force and the frontline health workers.

He noted that the people were aware of the easiest ways to contract and avoid getting infected with the disease.

“We know the three commandments of COVID-19 which are social distancing, washing and sanitising our hands and wearing our face mask. These three commandments should become our way of life. They should become part of our everyday life,” Ganduje urged the people.

He added, “Relaxation of lockdown is now from 6am to 6pm on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. We also decided to open our markets in order to improve business activities in the state.

“We are producing face masks in large quantities and the market leaders have promised to produce face masks and distribute them free of charge. They will also provide water and soap for visitors and customers to make use of them.”

The governors hinted that officials have been directed to fumigate all the markets to ensure that they were devoid of diseases, saying the ratio of collection of samples has increased.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the State Task Force on COVID-19 and the state deputy governor, Dr Nasiru Gawuna, said their objective was to contain the spread of the disease in the state.

He noted that since Kano recorded its index case of COVID-19, the task force has continued to work hard in ensuring that the spread of the virus was controlled.

“This we have done through a coordinated mechanism for preparedness and response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The Task Force has been working hand-in-hand with the Committee on Palliatives to ensure donations from corporate organisations and good spirited individuals,” he said.

The deputy governor added, “We are also working with traditional rulers, Civil Society Organisations, and other opinion leaders to ensure effective enlightenment of members of the public.”

  • Proof we are corrupt NDDC, Reps reply Clark

Proof we are corrupt NDDC, Reps reply Clark

The Chairman, Committee on Niger Delta Development Commission, House of Representatives, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has challenged the Interim Management Committee of the commission to show proof that the National Assembly is frustrating its activities.

Tunji-Ojo, while reacting to a petition filed by the Chairman, Board of Trustees, Ijaw National Congress, Chief Edwin Clark, challenged the management of the NDDC to approach anti-corruption agencies with evidence that he or other members of his panel are corrupt.

Clark had petitioned the National Assembly, asking its leadership to remove and investigate the chairmen of its committees in charge of NDDC probe.

In an ‘open letter’ dated June 1, 2020, Clark had called on the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan; and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila to remove the Chairmen of the Senate Committee on Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Peter Nwaoboshi; and House Committee on NDDC, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo and investigate the allegations of corruption leveled against them by the Interim Management Committee of the NDDC.

Both the Senate and the House had on May 5, 2020, separately resolved to investigate the alleged extra-budgetary spending by the NDDC amounting to N40bn.

Reacting to the letter, Tunji-Ojo dismissed the allegations as untrue, challenging NDDC management to provide evidence to back the corruption claim, challenging it to approach anti-graft agencies with them.

He said, “I want to state very clearly that Baba Edwin Clark is our revered leader, not just to the Niger Delta but also to Nigeria. He is a man that has committed so much towards the development of the Niger Delta. But the point that I personally disagree with is the issue of documentary evidence and delay of the budget.

“I have challenged the IMC more than three times on all media platforms, that if there is any documentary evidence against me, they should either bring it out or petition and submit such to the relevant government anti-corruption agencies. After all, I am a lawmaker and I do not enjoy any immunity. So, if there is any proof, they should act and stop throwing tantrums.”
