After keeping quiet for days, Edo state Police command said they are searching for people who might have witnessed the assault that led to the death of a female student of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Edo State.

Vera Omozuwa, 23, a 100-level Microbiology student of UNIBEN, was beaten inside a hall in the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Ikpoba Hill, Benin City on May 13, where she went to study.

She died on May 31, 18 days after, at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital.

  • China mocks Trump over Floyd protest

China mocks Trump over Floyd protest

Chinese officials and state media have seized on news of the protests sweeping the US, comparing the widespread unrest to the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong and accusing Washington of hypocrisy. Mass protests spread across multiple US states over the weekend, many escalating after police responded with teargas, pepper balls and other projectiles, and in some instances using vehicles to ram protesters. Some cities have seen arson and looting, and across the nation police have been criticised for using excessive force. The protests were sparked by the death of George Floyd, an African American man killed by a white police officer in Minneapolis.

The US protests follow almost a year of highly visible and significant pro-democracy demonstrations in Hong Kong, where police are also repeatedly accused of using excessive force.

The US administration has been vocal in support of the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong, particularly since Beijing’s declaration it would impose national security laws on the semi-autonomous region. After days of chaotic scenes in the US, on Sunday China’s foreign ministry spokeswoman, Hua Chunying posted “I can’t breathe” – Floyd’s last words – to Twitter, with a screenshot of her American counterpart criticising China’s crackdown on Hong Kong.

Fellow ministry spokesman, Lijian Zhao retweeted numerous comments and reports on the protests, including from Russia’s deputy representative to the UN, accusing the US of double standards. “Why US denies China’s right to restore peace and order in HK while brutally dispersing crowds at home?” said Dmitry Polyanskiy. State media has also revelled in the scenes of unrest unfolding in the US.

“US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi once called the violent protests in Hong Kong ‘a beautiful sight to behold.’… US politicians now can enjoy this sight from their own windows,” Hu Xijin, editor-in-chief of nationalist tabloid Global Times, wrote on Saturday.

APC Fumes Over C/River Local Government Election Results

APC FUMES OVER C/RIVER LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTION RESULTS – Wanted cultist elected councilor in absentia.

    By Joseph ETTA in Calabar

As the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) sweeps the local government elections in the 18 council areas of Cross River State, All Progressive Congress (APC) cries foul.

The PDP was declared winner of all the contested positions comprising of 18 chairmanship and over 100 councillorship positions in the weekend L. G elections in the State.

Though the APC as a party is yet to issue an official statement over the results of the elections, however, in a swift reaction to the declared results, an APC chieftain in the State, Mr. Prince Effiom dismissed the election as a ruse.

His words: ”Congratulate? Congratulate? Why should I congratulate them? Even an indicted candidate on the platform of the PDP in ward 6 won because those in charge instructed CROSIEC to give 100% win to the PDP.”

Continuing, he said, “the guy who ran for councillorship in ward 6 in Calabar south has been blacklisted and declared wanted by the police over cultism but he contested and has been declared winner.

According to the APC chieftain, the election was not free and fair. I’ll tell you of my personal experience. I voted in Unit 5 of ward 10 and I can tell you that about 80 of us voted for APC and about 20 voted for PDP. The PDP ward chairman attempted to snatch the ballot box but I personally stopped him. There was a fracas and in the end, the voters were not counted and was taken to CROSIEC like that inspite of voting regulations that votes should be counted at polling boots. There were even no result sheets”.

While insisting that the election was slam, he said, “I will still tell you this. While we were there voting, a former councilor in ward 10 who registered in unit 4 came to unit 5 to vote. We didn’t allow it. She said should be allowed to vote on self-recognition. Can you imagine that. We resisted her. If we were not there she would have voted.”

Court dismisses suit against APGA, Victor Oye

The Federal High Court, Abuja judicial division has dismissed and struck out the suit filed by Smart Ihuoma against the All Progressives Grand Alliance, Chief Victor Oye and INEC.

Smart Ihuoma had instituted a suit in 2019 challenging the conduct of the NEC meeting and the elective National Convention of the APGA. He then asked the court to set aside the outcome of the National Convention and the election of the 2nd defendant (Chief Victor Oye) and other national officers of APGA.

While delivering judgement today, the court considered the Preliminary Objections filed by the defendants challenging the jurisdiction of the court to entertain an intra party subject matter among other grounds of objection.

The Court agreed with the defendants counsel that it lacked the jurisdiction to entertain the claims of the plaintiff being questions arising from the election into the national offices of the 1st defendant and the conduct of the NEC meeting of APGA.

*Hon. Justice A. R. Mohammed in his judgement, stated the clear position of the law as settled in a plethora of appellate court cases that questions arising from intra party affairs of a political party are non-justiciable and no court can entertain the issue of a challenge to the election of the 2nd defendant (Chief Victor Oye) as the national Chairman of APGA.

The court made no order as to costs.
