  • Twitter suspends accounts of Nigerian users over tweets on police killing of George Floyd

Twitter suspends accounts of Nigerian users over tweets on police killing of George Floyd

There are indications that US technology giant, Twitter may be targeting accounts critical of ongoing protests against police brutality targeting blacks in the United.

Recall that for the last 3 days the United States has been in a state of unrest and protest which was sparked by the death of George Floyd, a handcuffed black man who pleaded for air as a white police officer kneeled on his neck with his hands in his pockets.

Floyd’s arrest was captured in a video which has now been seen by millions around the world, sparking global outrage.

The video shows Floyd laying on the ground with a white officer Derek Chauvin’s knee pinning him to the ground as he begged, “I can’t breathe.” until he died.

Many people across the world view the incident as a testament to racism in the United States.

In Nigeria many people took to their social media handle to denounced the brutality in very strong terms.
However this has also led to the suspension of Twitter accounts of some Nigerians according to reports.

Speaking about his experience Hakika Hashim said his Twitter account was suspended yesterday noting that he had no doubt that it was over his tweets and condemnation of the police killing of George Floyd. “I am certain the suspension is over my tweets on American racism and brutal murder of Floyd, my account has been opened since 2011 why now? I am shocked this is a curtailment of freedom of speech by by Twitter and a country that claims to be the bastion of democracy and freedom of expression.

Also speaking in a similar light Tumba Solomon said apart from his account which was suspended he is also aware of those of three of his friends which were also suspended “My account and that of three of my friends were suspended yesterday by Twitter on account of our tweets condemning racial descrimination in America and calling for more protests across America. Our experience may just be a tip of the iceberg. We are enraged by what is happening in America”

It would also be recalled that yesterday the President of the United States Donald Trump signed an Executive Order
Seeking to make tech companies more accountable.

Trump said the new Order was to “defend free speech from dangers.” according to him,

“A small handful of social media monopolies controls a vast portion of all public and private communications in the United States,” he said. “They’ve had unchecked power to censor, restrict, edit, shape, hide, alter, virtually any form of communication between private citizens and large public audiences.”

The question in the minds of many is, has Twitter resulted to self censorship in the face of this new Executive Irder to please President Trump? Will this be the new reality of account suspension for commenting on issues in America?

  • NAF unveils indigenous emergency ventilators

    NAF unveils indigenous emergency ventilators

Nigerian Air Force NAF yesterday said it has unveiled two emergency ventilators produced by a team of researchers from the Air Force Research and Development Centre AFRDC, and Air Force Institute of Technology AFIT, Kaduna, in partnership with the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Ahmadu Bello University ABU, Zaria, in furtherance of its drive to provide indigenous solutions to tackle the COVID-19 Pandemic.

It explained that the emergency ventilators tagged ‘NAF E-Vents’, were unveiled by the Chief of the Air Staff CAS, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, in Kaduna.

“Before today’s unveiling ceremony, the prototype E-Vents had been subjected to successful animal testing using both canine and porcine test subjects. The objective of the animal testing was to demonstrate the capacity of the Ventilators to support recovery of patients with respiratory diseases, including Acute Lung Injury and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome. The tests were also necessary to validate the effectiveness of the ‘Assist Ventilation Mode’, where the ventilator detects a breath from a patient being treated and synchronizes the equipment with the patient’s breathing.

The NAF E-Vents, which are intended for use when conventional invasive respiratory support resources have been exhausted, were found to deliver very satisfactory performance in air volume control and assist control modes and are now ready for human testing and further certification by relevant agencies,” Director, Public Relations and Information, Nigeria Air Force, Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola said in a statement.

Chief of the Air Staff CAS, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar said the devastating effects of the COVID-19 require that ingenious and proactive steps be taken in order to protect lives and avert any form of national tragedy.

Represented by the NAF Chief of Standards and Evaluation, Air Vice Marshal Remigius Ekeh, the Air Chief  noted that the NAF had continued to vigorously pursue a robust and result-oriented Research and Development (R&D) policy with emphasis on the provision of indigenous technological solutions.

“Our modest efforts have yielded results and positively impacted our operations,” the CAS added.

He noted that the team commenced work in early April 2020 and within 3 weeks had developed 2 prototypes.

He however emphasized that private sector investment would be required for mass production of the ventilators.

The CAS also noted that the unveiling ceremony was a further demonstration of his resolve to ensure that NAF continues to make significant contribution to the development of the country and thus become an Air Force that is the pride of every Nigerian.

Earlier, the NAF Director of R&D, AVM Paul Jemitola, said the NAF had made giant strides in the area of R&D under the visionary leadership of the CAS to the extent that R&D had become the norm in the Service.

“By investing in high quality training of personnel, innovative approaches to issues and encouraging out-of-the-box thinking, a lot of solutions to operational challenges in the NAF have been locally developed through R&D thereby saving huge resources,” he said.

He added that the culture of creativity engendered by the CAS is in line with his vision of self-reliance and self-sustenance in defence and other aspects of national life, especially at a time like this when all hands are on deck to confront the COVID-19 Pandemic.

  • Reps probe violation of inter-state travels

Reps probe violation of inter-state travels

Following massive violation of restriction on interstate travels directed by the President as part of measures to curb the spread of COVID-19, the House of Representatives said it will launch a probe into the matter.

In a resolution approved by the House of Representatives yesterday, following a motion titled, “Need for the effective enforcement of the Inter-state lockdown by security agents” sponsored by the Minority Leader , Hon.  Ndudi Elumelu and nine others, the legislators also resolved that  a special task force be set up to monitor and implement the interstate lockdown.

Debating the motion, Honorable Elumelu demanded the House to mandate its relevant committees to interface with the police and the Nigeria security and civil defense corps to investigate every  alleged complicity and design better ways of curbing these lapses , since there are disturbing reports and video messages to the contrary, that people still travel across the length and breadth of the country in spite of the restrictions on interstate movement declared by the president to curb the spread of the coronavirus pandemic

He explained that the phenomenon has become intractable to the extent that persons are  concealed  in essential food and goods delivery vehicles and transported to other states in the country while restrictions on interstate is supposedly on-going.

On many  occasions, the minority leader admitted that  states government have intercepted trailer loads of people moving in the middle of night and sneaking into other states in this lockdown period, whereas there are supposed to be security agents at states borders implementing the presidential lockdown orders .

This development he argued was worrisome and a total draw back to the containment efforts of various governments as the COVID-19 bites harder and continue to devastate the world.

More troubling he confessed was the complicity of security agents who ought to enforce the presidential order on the interstate lockdown, warning that, If the anomalies are not quickly checked by probing the continuous interstate movement and subsequently creating a special task force to enforce it, COVID-19 cases will increase to an alarming high, that can put the country in a precarious state.
