Wike approves N13.1bn for School projects in Areas Councils

    By Joyce Remi-Babayeju

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike has approved the sum of N13.1 billion to the six Area Councils in Abuja to finance renovation, new construction of toilets and provision of furniture across secondary and primary schools in 2024.

The mandate secretary, Federal Capital Territory Administration Education Secretariat, Dr Danlami Hayyo disclosed this at the end of year media briefing in Abuja on Wednesday.

Hayyo disclosed that the approved amount will be shared to the Councils according to their area of school project needs, adding that the minister had pledged his commitment to ensure that all the projects are executed in 2024.

Hayyo said, “The minister of FCT who has been described as Mr. Project, approved new constructions, renovations or rehabilitation, provision of furniture and construction of toilets in FCT secondary and primary schools to the tune of over N13 billion.’

“Wike pledges that all the projects will be executed in 2024, we are not going to provide details of how many schools will be renovated or constructed in each Area council of the FCT because the school needs of the Area Councils are not equal.

“There are some Area Councils that the demands are higher, there are so many dilapidated and congested classrooms. We know how the current minister of FCT changed the phase of education in Rivers state, it is the same system that he is going to do in the Federal Capital Territory, that is why he has approved the money for the school projects.”

Hayyo also disclosed that from January -December, 2023, the Education Secretariat had trained secondary education board staff in London for British Education Training Technology show.

The Mandate. Secretary further listed other trainings to include’ “International training on innovative/entrepreneurship, training of school librarians in e-library, training of teachers in Computer-Based Test, online training of 80 English teachers by British council, training of 96 members of School-Based Management Committee and many more others.”

As for the challenges so far, Hayyo called on staff of the secretariat to be committed to achieving positive results and not to be deterred by challenges.

  • Tinubu’s Cash Transfer Initiative Very Commendable, Says Coalition

Tinubu’s Cash Transfer Initiative Very Commendable, Says Coalition

The Nigerian Coalition of Civil Society Organizations (NCCSO) has commended the recent flag-off of the National Cash Transfer Programme by President Bola Tinubu-led administration over its poverty reduction potentials.

The commendation came during a press conference addressed by the leader of NCCSO, Abimbola Ademola on Tuesday in Abuja.

Speaking on behalf of the Coalition, Ademola stated that the civil society groups welcome the Federal Government unwavering resolve to tackle poverty through the “Renewed Hope Cash Transfer”, while backing the National Cash Transfer Office under the leadership of the Minister for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Beta Edu to deliver on the initiative.

The Coalition stressed that the National Cash Transfer Programme will help the poor develop savings skills and ultimately reduce poverty, while urging the Minister for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation not to relent in doing the right thing.
Part of the statement read: “We want to express our joy and happiness in the transparency thus far, we also encourage Dr. Edu to keep up the good works as we are satisfied with her hard work and achievements.

“President Bola Tinubu’s initiation of the Renewed Hope Cash Transfer Programme is highly commendable as the Programme has successfully credited about 2.6 million Nigerians with N25,000, through their bank accounts. These Nigerians, though extremely poor, previously had no bank accounts to enable them to benefit from the programme. These nearly three million Nigerians will receive additional N25,000 for two months totaling N75, 000. They are representatives of poor and vulnerable households identified through the National Social Register.

“The National Cash Transfer Office under the able leadership of Dr. Beta Edu, the Minister for Humanitarian affairs and Poverty Alleviation aims to reach 15 million poor and vulnerable households, with cash transfers of 25 thousand Naira monthly for three months, under the renewed hope conditional cash transfer program of Mr President.

“This is being done in a phased approach of 5 million households per month. The National Cash Transfer Program has also made a breakthrough as it was able to validate existing poor vulnerable household data from the National Social Register, through its ongoing beneficiary enrolment process. The office is currently in the hinterland of Nigeria’s rural areas, physically identifying these poor individuals, who have largely been unbanked and have also been without any form of telecommunications exposure.

“They are enrolling them into a beneficiary register with its vast network of about 10,000 cash transfer facilitators, spread across every ward of the federation, doing physical identification and engagements with these vulnerable individuals to ensure that only the poorest of the poor benefit from the National Cash Transfer Programme.

“This in itself is a huge task because it helps identify new Nigerians that had previously been left behind in the planning process of this country, bringing them into the forefront of Nigeria’s resource allocation initiatives.

“All these and more are being midwifed by the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs under the leadership of Dr. Betta Edu through the National Cash Transfer Office and the National Social Safety Net Coordinating Office, initiatives conceived under the National Social Safety Net Programme, which is a poverty mapping and alleviation collaboration between the Nigerian Government through the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Ministry of Finance and the World Bank

“All in the bid to create financial access for these beneficiaries, and alleviate the interim hardships emanating from Nigeria’s ongoing economic reforms.
“The funds are transferred directly into the beneficiary bank accounts, from the accounts of the Cash Transfer Office in the CBN, without any intermediary funds warehousing as promised by Mr President.

“The Cash Transfer Office is also ensuring that all beneficiaries have BVN or NIN generated for them, as directed by the CBN, which further strengthens Nigeria’s ability to identify and plan for the well-being of its vast number of citizens.”

    By Milcah Tanimu

In response to allegations of assaulting a police officer at the 2023 Iganmode Day event, Tunji Akinosi, the House of Representatives member representing Ado-Odo Ota Federal Constituency, has contested the claims, asserting that the viral video circulating online was edited and did not accurately depict the incident.

Akinosi released a statement on Tuesday, refuting the accusations and explaining that he pushed the police officer due to the latter’s disrespect towards the state’s Deputy Governor and a perceived threat against Akinosi himself.

Contrary to the viral video’s portrayal, Akinosi clarified that the disrespectful officer was assigned to Senator Yayi, not the Deputy Governor. The statement emphasized that Akinosi’s action was prompted by the officer’s rude behavior and display of irresponsibility at the event, which had already seen the officer assaulting the Deputy Governor’s aide, Kola Salako, and others in the Deputy Governor’s entourage.

The statement further explained that Akinosi’s intention was to mediate and reconcile the situation, but the officer’s continued rudeness and derogatory remarks, along with a threat, led to the physical intervention. Akinosi denounced the alleged assault as an attempt by political opponents to tarnish his reputation ahead of the upcoming political activities in Ogun State.

The statement concluded by expressing concern over the spread of unverified news by various platforms and individuals posing as journalists and affirmed Akinosi’s commitment to fulfilling his campaign promises to his constituents without distraction.

  • Fire Service CG Abdulganiyu Jaji under Fire as Amalgamated CSOs Call for His Immediate Sack

Fire Service CG Abdulganiyu Jaji under Fire as Amalgamated CSOs Call for His Immediate Sack

The Amalgamated CSOs of Nigeria (ACN), a pressure group of civil society practitioners, pro-democracy development and anti-corruption agitators, has demanded the immediate sack of the Comptroller-General of the Federal Fire Service (FFS), Abdulganiyu Jaji, for what it referred to as “gross incompetence, maladministration and non-adherence to the laid down rules of engagement, including core values of integrity, transparency and pro-active development of the workforce of the organization.” The group of CSOs noted that since Abdulganiyu took over the affairs of the FFS, the organization has witnessed gradual but steady decline in all ramifications.

In a press release issued in Lagos December 18, 2023, and jointly signed by the National President, Comrade Gbenga Ashiru Abiodun and General Secretary, Comrade Yakubu Abdullahi, the group recalled that on October 23, 2023, the Interior Minister, Dr Olubunmi Ojo, rightly referred to the CG of the Federal Fire Service (FFS): “You Are a Sleeping Giant.” This pronouncement made by the Minister, the group insisted, because “nothing positive has been heard of the organization since Abdulganiyu came on board.” They went on to also recall that the Interior Minister called for the “transformative rebranding and expansion of FFS responsibilities, which have been stifled since the present leadership took over.”

The Amalgamated CSOs said they are solidly behind the Interior Minister who reiterated that “The proposed rebranding of the Fire Service and Rescue Service seeks a shift in focus towards comprehensive risk assessment and a commitment to safeguarding lives and property.”

They also recalled that the Minister asserted, “The Federal Fire Service, very soon, when the Bill on Fire Rescue is assented to (by the National Assembly), we will play a major role on national development,” adding that, “for any country to attain its potentials, the role of the Fire Service cannot be taken for granted. I say this to the Federal Fire Service, ‘You are a Sleeping Giant.’ The time to wake up to your responsibilities is NOW!”

The Amalgamated CSOs further maintained that “the morale of staff of the FFS is the lowest in the history of the Service, as there are no enough motivation for staff, late payment of allowances, salaries and other emoluments, have increased the level of indiscipline among the rank and file, including the non-availability of enough fire trucks and equipment as the leadership is not focused on its challenges, but on self-aggrandizing issues and inordinate ambition of the leadership.”

The release also exposes the procurement process, “as sham and contract awards to cronies and friends of the CG who have continually fleeced the organization to the detriment of the work force, as they do not follow any laid down extant rules of contract awards and procurement processes.”

The group noted that they draw this conclusion because, “On several occasions, documents at our disposal show that awards of contracts to self, cronyism and relations, have become the order of the day. The management of the Fire Service is not focused on the delivery of its mandate, but are daily witch-hunting the ranks and files that are not from the ethnic stock of the CG, and causing bad blood amongst its work force, and is ostensibly responsible for the low productivity from staff as well as their lateness to work.”

It has also been diligently observed that “the operatives of the organization are cult-like, as the public and societies are not allowed to the Headquarters and several letters written, are not replied, including the Freedom of Information (FOI) letters sent by our different CSOs, under our umbrella, are also not received or answered for over a year now. The awards of contracts and procurement processes have been bastardized as the operatives of the Service are on a roller-coaster to Eldorado.”

The Amalgamated CSOs of Nigeria (ACN) will be leading a one million man march to protest this December to the Headquarters of the Federal Fire Service, for a week to ask for the removal and ouster of the current Comptroller General of the Federal Fire Service, CG Abdulganiyu Jaji for his failure to deliver on the core mandate of the FFS, as well as failure on his part, to sustained the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The group added that, it is calling on other CSOs across the 19 Northern States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), irrespective of whether their members of ACN or not, to join in “this epoch-making protest to remove the management of the FFS, as they have all failed to rescue the organization from its various problems, as the organization continues to be on its knees. In contrast, the leadership is hell-bent on continuously engaging in acts inimical to the progress of the Service.”

“It is owing to all these that we hereby, pass a “VOTE OF NO CONFIDENCE” on the Abdulganiyu Jaji-led leadership of the Federal Fire Service and call for his immediate removal and outright sack, due to his lackadaisical attitude towards transformative initiatives and acts unbecoming of a leader of his status, heading such a sensitive organization,” the CSOs insisted that this is just the beginning more are on their way and we will fight till the necessary change is achieved and sustained.

“Israeli Strikes in Northern Gaza Claimed Lives of 110 Palestinians Since Sunday, Says Hamas Health Ministry – AFP Unable to Independently Verify Death Toll”

    By Daniel Edu

The reported death toll of 110 Palestinians in the northern part of Gaza since Sunday due to Israeli strikes was announced by the health ministry under Hamas control. The accuracy of this death toll could not be independently confirmed by AFP. The situation in Gaza has been marked by a significant number of casualties, displacement, and allegations of deliberate actions affecting civilians. The ongoing conflict has led to concerns about humanitarian conditions, with accusations from Human Rights Watch against the Israeli government, claiming the deliberate use of starvation as a method of warfare in Gaza. The Israeli government, in turn, has criticized HRW, characterizing it as an “anti-Semitic and anti-Israeli organization.” The broader context includes the initiation of hostilities by Hamas on October 7 and the subsequent deadly Gaza war, resulting in numerous casualties and displacements.
