    Gaza Bombardment: How The United States Voted Against Humanity

    Last Friday, following a strong request from the United Arab Emirate Deputy Ambassador, Mohamed Abushaha to vote for a cease-fire in Gaza, the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for the first time in his tenure as the UN Secretary General, invoked Article 99, a seldomly used provision of the UN charter to draw the attention of the Security Council to the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza and entreated the council to demand a humanitarian cease-fire.

    Article 99 is the last but also the most powerful tool of the Secretary-General of the UN to present before the Security Council any matter which in his opinion may threaten the maintenance of international peace and security.

    The last time article 99 was invoked was during the conflict and fighting in 1971 that resulted in the creation of Bangladesh and its separation from Pakistan. Antonio Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, while invoking this powerful article stated that he believes the continuous and unending military attack on Palestines in Gaza by the Israeli government may aggravate existing peace and security. The situation in Gaza is at risk of a ”complete collapse” of the territory’s humanitarian system and civil order.

    The Security Council of the United Nations is composed of 15 members; five permanent members and ten non-permanent members elected for a two year term by the UN General Assembly. The five permanent members are France, China, the United States, Russia and the United Kingdom. The Security Council has the primary responsibility of determining the existence of a threat to the peace and in addition, ensures the maintenance of global peace and security. Under the charter of the United Nations, all Member States are obliged to comply or accept the council’s decisions.

    So, when the votes returned for the UN resolution for a pause in hostilities in Gaza last Friday, the vote in the 15 member council was 13-1, with the United Kingdom abstaining while the United States vetoed the resolution, thereby killing it.

    Despite that the October 7 war which commenced after Hamas attacked Israel has killed about 1,100 israelis and more than 17,400 palestines, 70% of whom are women and children, the Israeli government primely aided by the United States has embarked on an unending bombardment of Palestines in Gaza thereby drawing serious criticisms from world leaders, international rights groups and the United Nations officials. Though the Israeli president has unconvincingly stated that his government is engaging Hamas strategically through what is termed ”the scorched-earth policy” in geopolitics, the United States recently vetoing a UN resolution calling for an Immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza against the other 13 members of the Security Council who voted in favour of an immediate ceasefire has convinced many other nations alike to believe that Israel aided by the United States is perpetrating ethnic cleansing of the Gaza Strip.

    As the war rages on into the third month in Gaza, more civilian casualties are being recorded, over 60% of Gaza’s housing has been destroyed, about 80% of the population have become homeless, social and health facilities are being destroyed, educational facilities, critical infrastructures are also being destroyed and as Guterres, the United Nations Secretary-General puts it, ”nowhere in Gaza is safe”.

    In concluding, I would like to state that at independence, the preamble to the American independence reads: ”We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness”.

    So, does the war in Gaza today reflect the preamble of America’s independence? Does it settle the reason why the United Nations was created in October 1945 in San Francisco, after the collapse of the League of nations? Does it promotes the ideals of democracy? Is this what the Fundamental Human Rights as championed by the US is all about? Is it a replica of America, God’s own country? Only posterity will tell.

    A political group, under the aegis of Plateau Central Concerned Patriotic Movement has joined in appealing to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to consider Hon David Bitrus Kasuwa Barji as a worthy replacement to the Minster of Labour and Employment Bar Simon Lalong .

    The appeal was made in a statement signed by the coordinator of the group, Hon Peter Manasseh Wuyep in Jos .

    The statement made available to reporters in Jos said Barji is an astute Politician and above that an opinion moulder ,who has what it takes to deliver the desired dividends of democracy to Nigerian citizens .

    The group which consists of numerous political associations across Plateau Central Senatorial District said David Bitrus Kasuwa Barji deserves to be considered for ministerial position considering his wealth of experience and his immense contribution to the success of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Plateau state during the 2023 elections.

    They explained that Barji is known for practicing an all-inclusive style of leadership by engaging various communities without an iota of discrimination, tribalism, or sentiment based on religion or section.

    According to the group, Barji as chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Plateau state formed a formidable and powerful political support group with a solid foundation used as tool to attract the youth across 24 local government areas of Plateau state.

    Barji worked very hard to see the actualisation of President Tinubu’s administration through his political support group.

    The group described David Bitrus Kasuwa Barji
    as a selfless politician who will be a tremendous asset to the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

    According to the group, his wealth of Knowledge has prepared him for the Ministerial job.

    The group also disagreed with the Publicity Secretary of the Plateau State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress Sylvanus Namang over comments made referring to Hon David Bitrus Kasuwa Barji as one who is “not known to the party”.

    They expressed concern that “…the publicity secretary has become a magic wand for detecting known and unknown members of the party adding that he has continued in his unfamiliar esoteric science of mendacity and political make-believe which has always produced what they described as “an atrocious result”.

    Recall that there was a leaked information which emanated following a meeting of the party last Wednesday 6th December 2023 which alleged that the party had concluded plans to adopt Hon Bitrus Kasuwa David Barji as replacement should Labour and Employment Minister Simon Lalong resign an take up his Plateau South Senatorial position, which INEC has already given him certificate of return following the decision of the Court of Appeal which sacked PDP’s Napoleon Bali.

    An official of the party in Plateau State when contacted (names withheld) had confirmed that indeed the party had met but didn’t confirm if the party had adopted Hon David Bitrus Kasuwa Barji, though he said that there are high level permutations and consultations to determine who will replace Simon Lalong as Minister from Plateau State should he decide to step aside. Hon Bitrus David Kasuwa Barji could not be reached to get his reaction over the development.

    In a rejoinder, the State Publicity Secretary of the APC Sylvanus Namang in had denied the said adoption of Hon David Bitrus Kasuwa Barji and referred to him as one who was not know to the party.

    This group however disagreed with Hon Namang and has requested the he tenders an unreserved apology to Hon Bitrus David Kasuwa Barji, while also referring to the Mr Namang as “…the biggest cog in the wheel of progress in the Hon Rufus Bature State Executive Committee of our great party”.

    The group also accused Mr Namang of being “…a tragedy in APC because he has no grassroot, media, Interpersonal relationships, religious, physical and spiritual value to our Party and he is just in the party to spite our faces and our faces will remain disfigured, unsighted, ugly and without any hope of plastic surgery reconstruction to make party members look presentable”, adding that they can’t stand and watch the Publicity Secretary in his macabre dance while their party is destroyed and buried.

    They accused the Mr Namang of is being an agent sent to destroy their party.

    The group presented evidences of the membership and participation of Hon Bitrus David Kasuwa Barji as a founding member of the APC who has contributed in no small way to the development of the party in Plateau State over the years.

    They also provided evidence of the member of Hon Bitrus David Kasuwa Barji during the 2021 revalidation of membership of the APC at the polling unit, receipts of payments for administrative charges and purchased party nomination forms for House of Representatives (Pankshin/Kanke/Kanam Federal Constituency) paid to the party by Hon Bitrus David Kasuwa Barji in 2019 and 2023 respectively. The group wondered why Mr Namang would refer to Hon Bitrus David Kasuwa Barji as one who is unknown to the party.

    Ogun State Warns Drivers Against Highway Repairs to Prevent Accidents

    The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) have issued a stern warning to truck drivers, cautioning them against repairing broken-down vehicles on highways. This directive aims to reduce road accidents and enhance safety on the roads, particularly during the festive season.

    In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, Ajibade Adekunle, the South-West Zonal Commander of TRACE, emphasized the importance of preventing accidents caused by broken-down vehicles. He highlighted a recent crash on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway that resulted in 10 fatalities, pointing out that the tragedy could have been avoided if the malfunctioning vehicle had been promptly towed off the road instead of being left on the highway.

    Adekunle disclosed that the Corps Commander of TRACE, Mr. Semi Ogunyemi, has mandated personnel to conduct 24-hour surveillance patrols across the state to eliminate road accidents. The warning also extends to drivers engaging in drunk driving and violating traffic rules, urging them to exercise caution during the festive season.

    Addressing recent accidents involving motorcycles and trucks on December 8, Adekunle stressed the importance of adhering to safety rules and regulations. The TRACE commander expressed dissatisfaction with the incidents and announced plans for intensive sensitization campaigns to educate the public on road safety.

    Adekunle concluded by urging motorists to contact TRACE and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) for appropriate actions when their vehicles develop faults on the highway, emphasizing the prevention of unnecessary loss of lives.

    The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, conducted the swearing-in ceremony for nine additional Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) on Tuesday. This development follows the Senate’s approval of the appointment of seven of President Bola Tinubu’s nominees as RECs on November 1, 2023.

    The ceremony, held at the INEC Headquarters in Abuja, saw the chairman emphasizing the significance of the commissioners’ roles in ensuring the conduct of fair and transparent elections. He urged them to be guided by the electoral legal framework, the code of conduct for RECs, and good conscience.

    Yakubu addressed the newly sworn-in RECs, stating, “As RECs, you are the representatives of the Commission in the various States to which you will be deployed shortly. I urge you not to engage in a puerile debate that adds no value to your work.”

    He further cautioned against acts of defiance, indiscretion, or transgression within the limits of their delegated powers and responsibilities.

    The INEC chairman highlighted that the 10th REC-designate would be sworn in next month following the expiration of the tenure of the REC representing Akwa Ibom State currently deployed to Delta State.

    Notably, this batch of appointments includes several INEC career officers, with four having risen to the rank of Director within the Commission. Mahmood urged them to leverage their experiences to hit the ground running.

    The newly sworn-in RECs and their respective deployments are as follows:
    1. Abubakar Dambo Sarkin Pawa – Kebbi
    2. Abubakar Ma’aji Ahmed – Borno
    3. Dr. Anugbum Onuoha – Edo State
    4. Ehimeakhe Shaka Isah – Akwa Ibom

    Speaking on behalf of the newly sworn-in RECs, Barr. Oluwatoyin Babalola pledged loyalty to their duties and recognized the responsibilities they hold as RECs in Nigeria. Babalola was previously the Director of Legal Services at the commission’s headquarters before her appointment. Aminu Idris from Nasarawa state was a retired director in the Election and Political Parties Monitoring Department at the INEC headquarters, while Shehu Abdulwahab served as INEC’s administrative secretary in Benue State before his appointment as a REC.

    The Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA, on Monday said that Utako Market may be shutdown over safety concerns and poor sanitation  to avert epidemic.
    Utako Market managed by the Abuja Municipal Area Council, AMAC, is one  of the largest markets located in Utako district.
    The Director,  Department of Development Control,  Mukhtar Galadima and leader of the taskforce, expressed displeasure at  the deteriorating sanitation situation in Utako Market.
    Galadima said the market has become a ” time bomb and disaster waiting to happen, and as such there is an urgent  need to clean up the market and ensure  disaster and epidemic were averted.
    Galadima lamented  that such a market  located within the heart of the city could be allowed by its managers to degenerate to a place where both human and environmental safety is compromised.
    He noted that proactive measures must be taken, while  an  urgent meeting would be convened with all stakeholders in the market.
    He said that it is worrisome that the market managers have illegally allowed the market to overflow into the major streets around Utako residential areas.
    Galadima stated that henceforth, the taskforce would not allow  traders occupy the streets again because they had started vandalizing and defacing the road infrastructure.
    Also speaking, the Secretary of FCTA’s Command and Control, Peter Olumuji said apart from the nuisances in the area, residents around the neighborhood, have also complained of security threats surging from the market.
    Olumuji also disclosed that the market has been overtaken by idle youths and suspected hard drug addicts.
    He said that although no suspect has being   arrested, the FCDA has taken a proactive step to brief  the National Drug Laws Enforcement Agency ,NDLEA,  to pay close attention to the market area, as a way of curbing the illicit drug peddling activities.

    The  Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, Republic of Azerbaijan and the Heydar Aliyev Foundation has presented certificate of commendation to Ambassador Dr. Shehu Malami at the 28th session of the Conference of the United Nations Climate Change in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
    Dr. Shehu Malami, an Ambassador At Large to African Region International Human Rights Commission (IHRC), has also been commended for his contribution to the greener and more sustainable future through his active participation in Azerbaijan’s “Plant a Tree” initiative.
    The letter of appreciation by the Republican of Azerbaijan stated that Amb. Malami Shehu’s commitment to planting a tree symbolized meaningful step towards environmental stewardship and enhanced the natural beauty and ecological health of their nation.
    “Thank you for joining us in this vital effort to nurture our planet”, the letter stated”, a statement made available to newsmen has stressed.
    Among the delegates from almost 200 countries, was the World Chairman of IHRC Ambassador Shahid Amir Khan, who met with the Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other world leaders, advocated collective action and emulation to stop climate change worldwide.
    At the conference, Ambassador At Large African Region, IHRC Dr. Malami Shehu Ma’aji met with the State Secretary and Special Envoy for International Climate Action at the Federal Foreign Ministry of Germany H E Ms. Jennifer Lee Morgan.
    Amb. Malami Shehu also met the Nigerian Minister of State for Environment, Mr. Balarabe Abbas Lawal during the submit on climate change at the Nigerian Pavilion in Dubai.
    In an interview with newsmen, Dr. Malami Shehu Ma’aji urged countries leaders to consider some key factors in African region particularly governance, agriculture, funding, climate change, crisis among others.
    The meeting expected to declare the submit close on Tuesday.

In his tweets, Obi expressed his desire for all Nigerian youth to have the support needed to explore and develop their talents.

    A civil society and pressure group, the Guild of Civil Societies and Media Executives for Equity, Justice and Transparency in Nigeria (GOCMEJ), a foremost anti-corruption, pro-democracy and good governance organisation with over 550 civil society groups, rights activists, bloggers and media executives, is encouraged and hereby applauds the re-branding and repositioning process presently being put in place by Dr. Abubakar Audi, the commandant-general of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

    This is as part of its efforts to strengthen and safeguard critical national assets and reduce the menace of kidnapping in schools. This inventiveness, GOCEMJ, gathered is due to the various initiatives enacted and the professionalism being displayed by men and officers of the Corps.

    In a press statement jointly signed by the organisation’s President and Country Representative, Omoba Kenneth Aigbegbele, and the head of media and publicity, Comrade Gabriel Gwajime, GOCMEJ noted the various institutional reformations presently taking place across the Corps as well as the sense of belonging, prompt payment of emoluments and allowances including the zero tolerance for corruption initiated by the Audi-led management. This, without doubt, has given the Corps a pride of place in the paramilitary organisations in the country.

    The arrest of students for acts unbecoming of them across institutions of learning in the country; arrest of same sex marriages which is a major milestone; the commendations given by governors of Zamfara, Gombe, Ogun, Jigawa and Katsina states recently are also worth mentioning; the reduction of the incessant herders’ and farmers’ clashes and cattle rustling; the deployment of undercover Corps officers to schools;  the collaboration with the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) to reduce criminal activities across the country with the toga ‘See something, Say something; the robust relationships of inter-agency corporations and partnerships with sister agencies such as the Navy, Army, Customs, Immigration, NNPC, and civil society organisations is a major achievement that must be applauded; the consistent advocacies carried out by the CG to intimate and assure Nigerians to believe in the Corps’ operations to engender faith in security agencies, are all worthy of note.

    The continued fight against cyber-crimes, child abuse and the flushing out of illegal guard private operators; the arrest of smugglers, vandals and pipeline/oil thieves in the Niger Delta region has become an herculean task that must be achieved, according to the CG, saying that the Service “is presently doing all it can to curb the proliferation of small arms across the length and breadth of the country. He also read the riot-act to the Corps’ commandants in the Niger Delta states, assuring them that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has a zero-tolerance to civil theft. He asked them to do all they can to nib crimes in the bud in line with a presidential order to rid the nation’s oil sector of economic saboteurs, vandals, criminals, oil thieves and other nefarious activities inimical to the growth of the sector.

    According to the statement, the NSCDC recently graduated 280 personnel from the Command and Staff College in Jos, Plateau state. At the graduation, the CG reiterated that “it is expedient to inform you that this is the first in the series of capacity building programmes lined up to prepare the corps personnel physically, mentally and psychologically for the greater task ahead.” The commandant-general further explained that 280 were drawn from all the 36 states’ Commands including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), comprised 104 female officers and 176 male participants who were exposed to both academic and physical exercises during the course which included staff course, staff duty, Command course, administrative duty, intelligence and a leadership course respectively to enhance the capacity of its personnel and meet up with global practice internationally. 

    The Guild can attest to the fact that the giant strides achieved so far by the current leadership are as a result of the strategic directions taken on the commissioning of the standard curriculum for NSCDC for entrenching career progression, effective supervision and transparent regulation of the Private Guard Companies in Nigeria which has reduced insecurity across the country. The Guild asserts that it’s connected to a new reinvigorated legal department, successes in anti-vandalism, protection of farmers’ physical security at mining sites and the establishment of Special Female Squad (SFS) targeted at boosting the fight against insecurity and the location of the squad in all Commands across the country. This has also enhanced the safe school response coordination and the protection of schools in remote areas and border communities, which is done in collaboration with other security agencies of the Army and the Department of State Security to foil attempts to attack schools. This is endorsed by all stakeholders.

    Similarly, the commandant-general has continuously urged security agencies/operatives to shun inter-agency rivalry to foster national security. The CG gave this charge at a recent security seminar tagged “Promoting inter-agency collaboration among security agencies.” He noted “that the rivalry was capable of eroding relationships building over time between security agencies and consequently rubbed off negatively on the provision of adequate security.”  

    The Guild also endorsed the amicable settlement of conflicts and dispute resolutions between herdsmen, farmers, cattle rustlers and villagers, community leaders and bandits – all championed by the current management of the NSCDC. The pressure group also applauded the vision, mission and the ability to implement its mandate as regards the settlement of disputes through Advisory Dispute Resolute (ADR) between warring parties.

    GOCMEJ recognises the importance of conflict and dispute resolution mechanism in today’s contemporary issues and conflict management, and commended the leadership for thinking out of the box and finding lasting solutions in today’s crises-prone society, where conflicts have become the order of the day.

    The Guild emphasised a renewed vigour for the increment of national budget allocated to the NSCDC in view of the pivotal role it plays in the reduction of criminal elements in the protection of critical national assets and the reduction of kidnapping in our schools as a result of the school initiative, which if properly funded will give the NSCDC the impetus to do more for the nation and its workforce.

    We are encouraged to commend the public procurement and contract approvals, accountability in procurement process, payments and the high esprit-de-corps of the NSCDC officers and men, as the morale of the officers has never been this high. We also applaud the transformation, vision and forthrightness of the leadership in changing the narrative to make the Corps the cynosure of all eyes through discipline, promotion of officers when due and capacity building of officers and men, including building strategic alliances with various ivory towers across the land, to upgrade the service institutions to meet with what is attainable globally and build robust sister inter-agency collaborations.

    GOCMEJ, therefore, has no hesitation in passing a vote of confidence on the Dr. Abubakar Audi-led management and calls on the international community and well-meaning Nigerians to prevail on blackmailers operating within supervising, institutions of the government to stay off the NSCDC management and allow them to concentrate on their mandate; communities should continuously support the proactive leadership to enable it further its commitment and efforts to the general well being of the nation.

    GOCMEJ realises that the management has won several laurels and awards from across the academia, media, and government institutions just to mention a few. Presently, the commandant-general, we learnt, has deployed massively personnel across the country for the yuletide period and has given marching orders to states’ commanders to brace up and reduce criminal activities to the barest minimum during this period.

    Tensions rise between organized labor and the Federal Government as the government fails to sustain the payment of the N35,000 wage award promised to workers. Workers in the Federal Civil Service report that the government only fulfilled the N35,000 wage award for the month of September, leaving them in confusion about subsequent payments.

    The initial wage award was introduced following the removal of the fuel subsidy by President Bola Tinubu, aimed at alleviating the hardship caused by the subsidy removal. While the payment was expected to be a recurring measure, workers state that they have not received any further communication or subsequent payments since September.

    A senior civil servant expressed confusion, stating, “The wage award was only paid once, and I assume that was the one for September. Since then, we have not received another. We are all confused at the moment.” Another civil servant emphasized the financial strain, noting, “Our take-home salaries cannot even take us home any longer at this point.”
