Federal Government Faces Backlash as N35,000 Wage Award Payment Stalls

Tensions rise between organized labor and the Federal Government as the government fails to sustain the payment of the N35,000 wage award promised to workers. Workers in the Federal Civil Service report that the government only fulfilled the N35,000 wage award for the month of September, leaving them in confusion about subsequent payments.

The initial wage award was introduced following the removal of the fuel subsidy by President Bola Tinubu, aimed at alleviating the hardship caused by the subsidy removal. While the payment was expected to be a recurring measure, workers state that they have not received any further communication or subsequent payments since September.

A senior civil servant expressed confusion, stating, “The wage award was only paid once, and I assume that was the one for September. Since then, we have not received another. We are all confused at the moment.” Another civil servant emphasized the financial strain, noting, “Our take-home salaries cannot even take us home any longer at this point.”

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) conveys dissatisfaction, describing the situation as “completely unacceptable” and emphasizing the government’s dishonorable intentions. The NLC hints at potential actions in response to the government’s failure to fulfill the promised wage award.

In response to concerns, the spokesperson for the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation assures civil servants that plans are underway to ensure they receive their wage awards. However, the NLC remains vigilant, emphasizing that any new minimum wage must result from collective negotiations involving all stakeholders, including workers, employers, and the government.
