  • THE NIGERIA WE WANT

    THE NIGERIA WE WANT

    Bisi Adeleye-Fayemi

‘I want a Nigeria safe for all women and girls. A country that nurtures the girl child to a meaningful future’.

‘A Nigeria where the voice of girls and women are heard. Where women and girls are seen as part of the development and growth of the nation. Where women are given leadership roles and responsibilities. Where women are not seen only as meant for cooking and child-bearing’.

‘A Nigeria where the rights of our women and girls will always be protected by the Government. A Nigeria where whosoever molests our women and girls will be brought to book’

‘A Nigeria where women and girls will be able to reach their full potential’

‘A Nigeria where cancer will be understood as not an attack from witches’

‘A Nigeria where ladies will be given employment without ‘trade by barter’

‘A Nigeria where our women and girls are treated with due respect and not as sex slaves. A Nigeria where our women and girls will not be discriminated against in the corridors of power. A Nigeria where our women and girls place will not be limited to the kitchen. A Nigeria where one day a female President, State Governors and Senate President will emerge’

These are the comments people left on my Facebook wall over the past couple of days when I put up a flyer advertising the Nigerian Women’s Dialogue scheduled for November 27th-29th in Abuja, ‘The Nigeria We Want’. I thank the organisers for inviting me to Chair this very important event.

The NWD has been organized by a coalition of feminists and women’s rights activists from around the country, interested in addressing the root causes of women’s exclusion, marginalization and abuse, and I am proud to be one of them. The issues are very familiar and have been addressed so many times.

However, it was felt that this National Dialogue needed to be convened in order to put our thoughts together as a women’s movement, understand different perspectives and agree workable strategies. This event brings together activists, policy makers, researchers, grassroots leaders, politicians, faith-based leaders and so on.

We come together with our various identities as grassroots, middle-class, elite, ruling-class women, irrespective of age, education, religion, ethnicity, marital status or physical ability. Our locations are different. Our experiences are different. Our platforms are different. Our understanding of the issues might be different. Yet, there is one thing we all have in common.
    WE ARE TIRED.

We are tired of saying the same thing over and over
We are tired of nursing our raped and battered children back to health
We are tired of mourning our sisters beaten to death by their spouses
We are tired of searching for our children who have been snatched away from our arms and have not returned
We are tired of singing, dancing and clapping for political leaders only to end up with nothing to show for it
We are tired of being assaulted and discriminated against because of our disabilities, as if we are not women too
We are tired of being old, lonely and abandoned, mostly because our children are too poor or indifferent to take care of us, or have died and left us alone in the world

We are tired of not being able to go to our farms for fear of being raped
We are tired of being tortured and dispossessed when our husbands die, all in the name of tradition
We are tired of all the blades, knives and scissors used to mutilate our little girls all in the name of culture
We are tired of seeing children giving birth to babies
We are tired of watching our sisters and daughters die while giving birth
We are tired of living in such poverty and desperation that we resort to the only tools we have to survive
We are tired of being harassed, intimidated and even burnt alive because we dared to raise our voices
We are tired of sex for grades, sex for jobs, sex for food, sex for appointments

We are tired of seeing the driver, gateman, Teacher, Policeman, Politician, Bank Manager, University Lecturer, Pastor, Imam, Traditional ruler all go scot free when they rape us or our children
We are tired of all the excuses for the lack of political will
In the famous words of the civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hammer, we are sick and tired of being sick and tired.

We will talk, argue, disagree and hopefully agree. At this dialogue, we need to ask questions for which we might not know the answers. There are some answers we will talk about without even understanding the questions. It doesn’t matter. We are here. This is our platform.

This is our conversation. Let us use our voices. We will say what we want, we will describe the present and the future that we want for ourselves and our children. At the end of our time here, we will be able to tell the world about the Nigeria we want as women. Hopefully, it will be a place everyone else would like to live in. I wish us a productive and joyful time together.
    Thank you

Opening remarks as Chair of the National Women’s Dialogue, Abuja, November 27th-29th 2019.

  • Words only confident people use all the time

Words only confident people use all the time

Here are seven phrases confident people use all the time:

    1. I don’t know
A person who isn’t truly confident often wants to be seen as such. They’re afraid others don’t take them seriously so they try to overcompensate.
Confident people, on the other hand, aren’t afraid to answer questions honestly–including when they don’t know. “I don’t know, but that’s a good question” is a variation of this, as is, “I’m not sure, but I’ll find out.”
There’s a perception that in order to be a good leader, you need to know the right thing to do all the time. This is a fallacy. You don’t need to already know; you need to be willing to discover what it is. You need to be able to listen closely to those who are more educated on the subject than you, and then call the shot.
Confidence isn’t about having all the answers; it’s about being comfortable seeking them out.

    2. I’m sorry
Insecure people are often unwilling to say “I’m sorry” because they perceive it as weakness. They do everything they can to blame others instead of taking any responsibility themselves. They’re terrified that if they say something like, “I was wrong” what they’re really saying is, “I’m bad.”
Confident people, on the other hand, are able to say, “I’m sorry. I messed that up. Can we start again?” Or, “I’m sorry. I didn’t realize that what I said had that impact. I’d like the opportunity to do better next time. How does that sound?”
Apologizing when you’ve made a mistake is the trait of a confident person.

    3. No
“No” is a complete sentence. It’s also one of the hardest sentences to learn how to say, particularly if you were raised in a home where you weren’t allowed to say it. If it wasn’t safe for you to assert healthy boundaries as a child (or if you were punished for doing so), you often become a people-pleaser as an adult.
Let’s face it: Most people have poor boundaries. It takes practice to learn how to say yes only when you mean yes, and how to say no tactfully but firmly.
Confident people practice good boundaries. They say “no” when they need to. They trust that others won’t attack them for saying no, and understand that if someone does push back on their boundaries in a disrespectful way, that person is in the wrong–not them.

    4. How are you?
Confidence stems from connection. Why? Because when you know you’re truly connected to others–when there are people with whom you feel safe to be fully yourself–you’re able to take risks. You’re willing to put yourself out there because you know that if you fall on your face, someone will have your back.
This ability to connect deeply and authentically is reflected in a confident person’s everyday language. When they ask, “How are you?” they mean it. They’ve gone to the depths of themselves, so they’re able to hold space for the depths of others.

    5. I’ve got something to say
Confident people speak up. They’re willing to express themselves even if they know it may generate some conflict–especially when there are repercussions for the team or the organization as a whole. They don’t seek out conflict, but they’re able to stand up for what they believe in, even when it’s not convenient.

    6. Yes, thank you
Confident people know how to receive. They aren’t stoic islands of self-reliance. They don’t shut everyone out. They have a secure basis of support (friends, a loving spouse, a healthy family) and they accept support from their tribe. They know how to ask for help when needed. They don’t believe they can do it all themselves; they know it takes a team.

    7. Tell me more about that
Rather than jumping in with their opinion all the time, confident people take the time to listen closely to what their conversation partner is actually saying. If they don’t understand, they strive to. They don’t assume they understand the other person’s point of view; they ask.

  • Social Media Bill: SHORT WALK TO TOTALITARIANISM?

    Matthew Hassan KUKAH

Bishop Kukah has earned respect over the years for his unbiased stand on burning national issues. This is yet another classic!

I have consistently tried to create levels of differentiation between democracy and dictatorship, especially dictatorships of the military variant as we have had in Nigeria. I have argued that Nigeria is still very far away from the goal posts of what could be called a democratic society. In my view, the environment does not as yet look anything democratic because the actors are largely strangers to the ethos of and what is more, too many of them are tied to the old order, not to talk of the fact that the presence of General-presidents suggest that we are still in the thrall of militarism.

Democracy thrives on debate, consensus building, negotiation, persuasion, argumentation, rule of law, process, and inclusion. The military thrives in a coup culture, secrecy, betrayal, violence, command structure, exclusion and lack of transparency. That explains why I have always warned against describing the current charade of violent elections as democracy.

I have illustrated on several occasions that many among us arrived at Democracy’s altar by parachutes, funded by moneybags, cliques and cults. We have seen no difference from those who claim to be democrats in terms of the strong-arm tactics that we associated with a militarized environment. Our ‘democrats’ have had no problems with what Noam Chomsky would refer to as resorting to manufactured consent when it comes to elections. They have rented the same crowds, contrived the same outcomes as the old order, seducing the people by bribery rather than persuasion and debate.

Like the false feathers of Icarus, everyday, the drama of the fraud called democracy is re-enacted as the masks occassionally fall off and we see the real face of fascism that hides behind it all. When they sense that we want to test their mandate through closely monitored elections, they threaten that we will receive either coffins or body bags in return. Every day, the evidence is before us suggesting clearly that, in the mind of those whom we have entrusted our future to, democracy is merely a heuristic device to perpetuate their grip on power, a bad portfolio investment that fears scrutiny. All the State Assemblies, at best glorified cemeteries of silence, inhabited by puppets, cowed to silence and submission as they munch their crumbs.

The recent outrage by the Minister of Information, Mr. Lai Mohammed over public reaction to the Social Media Bill, is illustrative of the point I am making, namely, that not all who call themselves democrats appreciate the enormous burden that goes with the claim today. The Minister has used some rather harsh and divisive words that suggest some contempt for the voices and views of those whose labours and sacrifices brought him and his government to where they are today. His language is disrespectful, appalling and illustrative of the highhandedness that suggests that we are not in a democracy. The language is as intolerant as it is alienating. The Minister says that no amount of threat, blackmail etc will dissuade the government from going ahead with the social media because it is borne out of patriotism. Really?

There are many questions begging for answers here. Is this the language of democracy? Is this the language of people who understand or have really imbibed and internalized the spirit and fine principles of democracy? If we must do your will or face the wrath of government, then, this suggests two things: First, we must obey you and government because we are subservient to you and government. We must be answerable to you not the other way round. We must, because if we don’t, we can be penalized by imprisonment for daring to question its wisdom or seek to have an input in a law that concerns us. When did we surrender our rights and voices to government if we are not heading to totalitarian rule? It looks like and smells like it. Is Mr. Mohammed a lawyer who is a politician or a politician who is a lawyer? In an ideal situation, the former should reinforce the latter.

At this point, I would rather side with President Muhammadu Buhari who has been far more honest about his deficient democratic credentials. I have heard the president on at least three occasions complain that democracy is definitely not his strong jacket. To him, democracy is an irritant, a nuisance that he is compelled to live with. To paraphrase the President: ‘When I was a military man, I arrested all the thieves and put them in protective custody. I asked them to go and prove their innocence. Now, I have been told that even though I can see the thieves, I cannot arrest them. I must take them to court and prove that they are guilty.’

I admire the fact that the president has illustrated that his conversion to democracy was not like Paul on the road to Damascus. His tentative conversion to democracy did not come with a confession of his sins (of staging a coup), a promise not to do that again and then a plea for absolution and the acceptance of the required penance! In honesty, the president says he prefers to work with ‘those he knows not those who know’, so we can forgive him. But not others.

Mr. Mohammed has climbed a moral high horse, claiming that he is motivated by higher and noble values of protecting the rest of us from a hovering scarecrow of evil, the social media. This is a low level fence erected to hide the construction of a wall of tyranny, fascism and totalitarianism. All tyrants and fascists started with the most noble of intentions, composing panegyric lullabies in praise of patriotism. But, as the old saying goes, patriotism is often the last refuge of scoundrels. Sooner than later, they will start the witch-hunt. This is why, the radical American intellectual and activist, Lillian Hellman who lived under the witch hunting era of McCarthyism titled her memoirs, ‘Scoundrel Time!’

To be sure, there is no one, including myself, who is not aware of the dangers posed by the social media. We have all been victims. However, should the government wish to address this matter legally and openly, why should they be afraid of a public debate? It is desirable that we address the social media by way of education, open debate and transfer of knowledge. When did the social media become sinister in the eyes of the government? Is it after the same government used it that they now realise that it was good for them then, but bad for the rest of us now?

Law making is a serious business and it demands high moral standards of honesty on the lawmaker. No citizen should be compelled to obey bad laws. Patriotism is not a commodity of exchange. I have lived long in this country, been engaged long enough to know that the degree of patriotism of office holders is often in direct proportion to the opportunities that they have. Today’s Buhariphiles will develop Buhariphobia when they lose their position. Against the backdrop of the rumours and whispers about term limits, do we know where this is going?

Finally, we must all concede that technology is here to stay. All we can do is to try to make it work for us. Like their explorer grandfathers before them, both Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook) and Jack Dorsey (Twitter) have shone their light. They know what they have seen in Nigeria and Mr. Dorsey says he plans a longer stay in future. They have seen opportunity in an incredibly energetic and brilliant youth and they are prepared to pour investment into them. What do those who govern us see? Afraid of their shadows, they see in their own Youth, trouble and threats to the quicksand into which they have buried their selfish ambitions. They want to kill these dreams by thinking of a Bill to protect us from Hate speech and so on.

There is absolutely no doubt that we face a difficult future with what to do with the social media. However, the future of employment lies there and all need to do is to extend the frontiers of the imagination of our Youth to enable them explore a future that can make us safer and prosperous. We know that fire burns and people drown in water. Should we therefore restrict the usage of water and fire or should we sit the children down and explain the dangers inherent in the goodness of water and fire? Our real challenge is the shame that now afflicts us due to years and years of the neglect. A people so badly governed will use anything to express their frustration and sadly, this is what makes us all victims of hate speech. The greatest expression of Hate is those who use the power in their hands to divide us by favouring or excluding others based religion, gender, political affiliation or social class. They are the real reason why our people have remained diminished.

It is a measure of who we are and the premium we place on life that anyone would dream of suggesting a death sentence for the propagation of Hate speech. Surely, unscrupulous and immoral theft of humungous resources belonging to all of us by our politicians is more damaging to our society than any Hate speech. It is like comparing saliva and a dam. We should have nothing to fear. A clear conscience fears no accusation. Technology, developed by humans still has inbuilt safety valves that will enable it to correct itself. Threats, arm-twisting or raw bravado will not do. Edward Snowden has shown that the builders of terror can always pull back. It is inefficiency and political corruption that creates the conditions for the social Media to thrive not lack of patriotism.

The ultimate goal of this Bill is not to punish those who offend, but those who offend government or those in government. Again, here, we have to fall back on the president’s sense of honesty. When he promulgated Decree 2, the focus was to punish journalists who made public officers uncomfortable. Again, on this note, the President has not changed his mind set at all. So, again when Tunde Thompson rushed to forgiveness, it was not because the President had shown any contrition. Therefore, when the sponsors of this Bill claim that it is for our own good, they are borrowing our mouths to eat onions. If the government gets away with it, we have no idea what else will be on the table. Only a robust debate can cure the claims of cynicism.

The Government has all the laws it needs to fight any form of crime and individuals can fall back on it. This Bill is a redundant, stale, superfluous and a fraud. We will fight it Bill with all our energy. It is rotten yoghurt being marketed beyond its expiration date. We should reject it as a totalitarian attempt to circumscribe our hard earned freedom.

  • Teamwork is key to organisational success

Teamwork is key to organisational success

It has been said that two heads are better than one. This statement speaks of teamwork, it means a work being carried out by a single individual will be more effective and produce better results if it involves two or more individuals_ teamwork.

John Maxwell said, “Teamwork is at the heart of great achievement. The question isn’t whether teams have value. The question is whether we acknowledge that fact and become better team players. That’s why I assert that one is too small a number to achieve greatness. You cannot do anything of real value alone.”

Most executive leaders would say they have a team. But having a team and operating as a team are two different things. Some would say they have a team because they have multiple people on their staffs. But it’s quite possible, even normal, to have a multi-staff organization with one person in charge and everyone else helping out.

Managers or department heads: Before you start pointing fingers at your CEOs or lead pastors and calling them dictators, take a look at your own area. Do you operate as a team? Or are you a Mini-Me dictator barking orders and giving directions rather than leaning on your team to help define direction and strategy?

I think I could count on one hand the organizations I know that have a high-capacity, visionary, big-dog leader and that also operate as a team. It usually isn’t the case.

If many of the following things are true in your organization, you can be certain teams will not thrive:

    1. Strong personalities dominate every discussion.
    2. People agree on something as a team only to see it reversed later by senior leadership.
    3. No one dares to “speak truth to power” and disagree with the senior leader.
    4. Debate is not encouraged.
    5. The group meets, but the top-dog leader rarely comes.
    6. The senior leader can’t be in a meeting that he or she isn’t leading.
    7. There is a revolving door for high-capacity leaders who report to the chief executive. They never stay on the team for long.
    8. People feel as though the leaders don’t want input, or don’t listen when they get it. Their minds are already made up.
    9. Leaders take individual credit for the accomplishments of the team.
    10. Change is not welcome unless the top-dog leader initiates it.
    11. After decisions are made, you’ll hear comments such as, “I don’t agree with it, but here is what was decided.”
    12. When a decision or new direction is communicated, people walk away hearing the “what” but rarely understand the “why.” There isn’t broad ownership in the decision.
    13. When someone messes up, he or she is often left to hang on his or her own.
    14. There are lots of good discussions, but no one can remember what was decided at the last meeting, and people aren’t held accountable for tasks.

Again, John Maxwell said, “Think of any highly effective leader, and you will find someone who surrounded himself with a strong inner circle. You can see it in business, ministry, sports, and even family relationships. Those closest to you determine your level of success.”

You can’t have a healthy culture without a solid team at the helm. It is impossible.

  • 3 Things to quit if you want success

3 Things to quit if you want success

The journey to becoming successful is not always a smooth path, it comes with a lot of potholes and broken bridges.

Even though each one of us has a different definition of success, there are certain things that are universal, which, if you give up on them, you will be more successful.

These things you should consider giving up include of the following:

    An Unhealthy Lifestyle

Jim Rohn once said, “Take care of your body. It is the only place you have to live.” The message behind this cannot be overemphasized.

If you want to achieve anything in life, everything starts from your body. First, you have to take care of your health, and there are only two things you need to keep in mind – a healthy diet and enough physical activities (i.e exercise)

    Quit making excuses

Successful people know that they are responsible for their life, no matter their starting point, weaknesses, and past failures.

Realizing that you are entirely responsible for what happens next in your life, is both frightening and exciting.

However, it is the only way that you can reach the success because excuses limit and prevent us from growing personally and professionally.

    Cut off Toxic People

People we spend the most time with, add up to whom we become eventually.

There are less ambitious people, and there are more ambitious people than us. If you spend time with the ones that are less driven than you, your average will go down, and with it your success.

However, if you spend time with people more advanced than you, no matter how challenging that might be, you will be more successful.

Take a look at around yourself, and see if you need to make any changes.

  • How to become a better leader

How to become a better leader

Vince Lombardi once said; ‘Leaders are made, they are not born. They are made by hard effort, which is the price which all of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile.’

Some people think leaders are born—they naturally possess the social intelligence and charisma that motivates others to work together. What happens when you d o not have all the leadership skills naturally? Vince Lombardi believes that leaders are made.
There are leaders who arise out of crisis situations, these are non-positional leaders and ever organization needs them. Every country needs these kinds of leaders.
One of the vital skills necessary to turns a seemingly bad situation into a good one is the art of strategy. One who can do this is considered a leader and valuable to their organization.
In the course of negotiations, talks, and projections, with team members or members of another company to get the best deal for our organization, a useful tool is the art of strategy.
Some of the tools that will help you become a better leader are:

    The art of building strategy:

Strategy separates you from the crowd. Why must you learn strategy? What is the definition of strategy? A strategy is a plan of action designed to achieve an long term or overall goal. A CEO, management or team member must be able to understand strategy in order to achieve their set goals. People who think fast are great at coming up with strategy.

    Building competence:

Without competence, having a strategy is not useful. Sharpen your skills. Enroll in a training course. Improve yourself. Learn something new every day. Be passionate about self-development. Get skills. Hone these skills. Get new skills that support the previous skill. Then start practicing every day. Practice until you’re good enough. Then practice some more. Determine to become the best in your industry. Competence builds trust.

    Get mentors:

The importance of mentors can’t be overemphasized. Rome wasn’t built in a day. It takes time to become what you dream of. If you want to go faster, you need a team. Some people you talk to and it seems you have grown ten years in experience because of the vast wealth of experience from the answers to the questions you ask. Your mentors have experience and are usually useful when you need advice to tough questions on the job.

    Unleash your potential:

When you have a strategy, you can start the journey of releasing your potential. Everyone has potential but most people never bother to discover theirs because of the pain of unmet goals or they might have given up on themselves and resigned to living an unfulfilling life. What is your plan of action to living a fulfilled life? The one you dream of? Write it down. Start implementing it.

    Conquer fear:

Face your fears. Be courageous in the face of everything new you have to do. Be bold to leave your comfort zone and sail into the unknown. Conquer the troubles ahead of you daily and win.

    Be enthusiastic about every day:

Do your homework daily, outline the goals and do your research to figure out how to solve problems as they raise their heads. Remember there is always a reward for solving problems. So a part of our daily goals should be how to solve problems.

Set goals, review then, set new ones:

Set achievable goals, then increase them with time. Have a list where you put our solved problems. A special book of problems solved. This motivation t o encourage yo u o n the day when a problem is proving stubborn; you can do anything.

    Build strong networks:

As you do business daily, you are building a network of people who trust you, your skills and your values, and methods of getting your job done. These are the people who add to ou and complement you as you add to them and balance them. Maintain good business practices and u are bound to get an lot more work via referrals.
