Publisher of Oviation Magazine and prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dele Momodu, has entered the fray amidst the ongoing conflict between Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who currently serves as the Federal Capital Territory minister.

The feud, which escalated to an arson attack on the Rivers Assembly, originated from Governor Fubara’s claims that Wike hindered his ability to govern effectively. Fubara’s defiance of Wike’s authority led to attempts to impeach him in the State Assembly, causing chaos in the state.

Addressing the conflict in a tweet from his official handle, Momodu criticized Wike for his thirst for power, stating, “Let me establish two incontrovertible facts: you’re a fantastic projects man and generous to your friends. But your tragic flaw is LACK OF ANGER MANAGEMENT.” He added, “RIVERS is neither your property nor perpetual inheritance. It would have been nice if you’re in private business, but RIVERS is not your personal enterprise.”

Momodu’s remarks coincided with efforts by the PDP leadership to mediate the dispute between the FCT minister and his successor. PDP governors met with Governor Fubara following the power struggle on Tuesday in an attempt to resolve the escalating tension.

  • Rivers State Assembly Faces Turmoil as Supporters of Governor Wike Seek to Impeach Governor Fubara

Rivers State Assembly Faces Turmoil as Supporters of Governor Wike Seek to Impeach Governor Fubara

    By Milcah Tanimu

On the 31st of October 2023, the Rivers State House of Assembly was plunged into chaos as 24 members, allegedly loyal to Governor Nyesom Wike, initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara. This move triggered a tumultuous situation in the state, with the governor’s supporters staging a protest at the assembly complex.

The crisis followed a bombing incident at the State House of Assembly located along Moscow Road in Port Harcourt the previous Sunday, suspected to be an attempt to hinder the lawmakers from carrying out the impeachment. Although the assembly chamber suffered damage, the fire service successfully extinguished the fire.

The lawmakers who signed the impeachment notice against Governor Fubara were reportedly aligned with former Rivers State Governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. This development led to the deployment of security forces in the assembly complex and other areas in Port Harcourt, raising concerns of potential violence.

The specific cause of the conflict between Governor Fubara and his political mentor, Wike, remains unclear. Notably, Wike had strongly supported Fubara’s election, even against the wishes of some key stakeholders in the ruling Peoples Democratic Party in the state.

As the crisis unfolded, the assembly complex was cordoned off by armed security personnel. Governor Wike was not available for comment, and the situation remained tense. The stage for this turmoil was set when unknown individuals attempted to set the assembly complex on fire, seemingly in a failed effort to prevent the anti-Fubara lawmakers from convening on Monday.

Despite the attack, the lawmakers convened a meeting early Monday morning, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, where they signed the impeachment notice against Governor Fubara. Additionally, House Leader Edison Ehie, who opposed the governor’s impeachment, was removed from his position, and three other members loyal to Fubara were suspended.

Sylvanus Nwankwo, representing Omuma constituency, presented the impeachment notice, citing “gross misconduct in the performance of the functions of the office of the governor” as the basis for the impeachment.

In response to the crisis, Governor Fubara, accompanied by security personnel, arrived at the assembly. A video surfaced showing police officers firing shots, tear gas, and water cannons at the governor and his supporters as they approached the assembly complex. Following a meeting with some lawmakers, Governor Fubara managed to sway support to his side, leading to the suspension of eight of his colleagues and the impeachment of Speaker Amaewhule.

Edison Ehie, earlier suspended by the anti-Fubara faction, was elected as the factional speaker during a session held at the Government House. This shift was part of the efforts by pro-Fubara lawmakers to thwart the governor’s impeachment.

Governor Fubara later addressed a gathering of youths, including members of the Ijaw Youth Council, declaring the impeachment attempt illegal and null and void. He commended the youths for their support and readiness to protect the interests of Rivers State.

The Rivers State Police Command pledged to launch an investigation into the incident at the House of Assembly. The state’s political parties, including the PDP and the APC, responded to the crisis, with various statements and calls for restraint and peaceful resolution.

Elder statesman Chief Edwin Clark appealed to President Bola Tinubu to intervene and maintain stability in Rivers State, warning against the potential consequences of a political crisis in the region.

Various individuals, including former government officials, condemned the impeachment process and expressed concerns about the instability it could bring to Rivers State. They called for a peaceful resolution and an end to the political upheaval.

Tinubu Expresses Confidence in Chief of Staff Amidst Allegations

    By Milcah Tanimu

In a recent statement, President Bola Tinubu expressed his “absolute confidence” in the integrity of his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila. This announcement was made just before the commencement of the Federal Executive Council meeting held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Tinubu’s comments come in response to allegations that Gbajabiamila has been involved in unethical practices, including “trading off appointments in the government of President Tinubu to the highest bidder.” The report claimed that there has been growing discontent among Tinubu’s supporters, with some pushing for Gbajabiamila’s removal from the Presidential Villa.

The allegations specifically mentioned the appointment of 10 Resident Electoral Commissioners for the Independent National Electoral Commission, indicating that the name of an Ekiti REC was replaced with that of a former commissioner under the immediate past Governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi. Furthermore, it was suggested that President’s Private Principal Secretary Akeem Okunola had been performing some of Gbajabiamila’s duties.

In response, President Tinubu stated, “I have absolute confidence in my Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila.” He went on to emphasize his accountability, stating, “So, all campaign of calumny, the buck stops here! If I make mistakes, I’ll own up to them. Like everyone in the country, I make mistakes, and when I make mistakes, I iron them out and correct them. Perfection is of God Almighty.”

  • FG lauds Gov Eno for reviving educational infrastructure

    By Ogenyi Ogenyi,Uyo

The imprints of Governor Umo Eno’s ARISE Agenda on basic education infrastructure in Akwa Ibom as evident in the ongoing remodelling of CKS Primary School to be replicated in the 31 Local Councils has attracted accolades from the Federal Government.

The Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, conveyed the commendations during a tour of the remodelled School led by the Eno last weekend.

Mamman, who was in Uyo for the celebration of the University of Lagos 1984 Law Class reunion, was overtly impressed by the initiative and imprints of the Governor and described the gesture as creating attractive environment and enticement to boost enrollment in schools.

This, the minister said, was in line with President Tinubu’s vision of reversing the decline in school enrollments, given the importance he attaches to education at the basic level and therefore acknowledged the need for collaboration between the local government, State and the FG to get it right.

“Indeed, there is hope for us as a country with the effort of all the Governors and every body and the federal Government working together collaboratively.

“For us at the federal level, particularly the President, Bola Amed Tinubu, that is our area of focus. We want the out-of school children to be a matter of history, and this is the way to do it.” the Minister said.

The Governor had earlier said that his administration’s determination to pay attention to education at the primary level was informed by the need to spur up the willingness and passion for education among school children.

He reiterated the need for the state and federal governments to collaborate in revamping the primary education, healthcare, amongst others, to the advantage of the states and country in general.

“We call upon the federal Government to support what we are doing. It is about children and the future of our children. Again, I want to underscore something here that the Federal and State Government can collaborate”, he emphasised.

Reiterating his passion for rural development, the Governor said his target is to replicate the model school across the 31 Local Government Areas, adding that the model propagation will be complemented with teachers training to ensure a complete facelift for primary education in the state.

He stressed his administration’s strong inclination towards rural development and resort to infrastructure upgrade in primary schools and healthcare facilities as strategy to attain rural development, soliciting the support and collaboration of companies and other well-placed individuals in such regards.

“I am passionate about the rural development but you also know that education is the foundation. Lack of education carries with it a lot of danger. So our ambition is to see what we can do, not just the building. We will furnish it, train the teachers, ensure that we do a total facelift in our primary education.” Eno said.

Tinubu will ensure Nigeria’s resources benefit citizens – Speaker Abbas

The Speaker of the House of Representatives Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, Ph.D, has said that the Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led administration would work in collaboration with the 10th National Assembly to ensure that Nigerians reap the benefits of their God-given natural resources.

The Speaker stated this on Sunday while playing host to the Emir of Agwatashi in Nasarawa State, Alhaji Dr. Abubakar Apeshi, who paid him a courtesy visit at his official guest house in Abuja.

The Speaker, while thanking the Emir for the visit, said he was aware of the recent discovery of crude oil reserve in Nassarawa State, particularly within the Agwatashi Emirate, following extensive geodetic survey by experts from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) research.

He assured the Emir and his entourage that he was very confident in the commitment of President Tinubu to make Nigeria’s natural resources work for the benefit of the citizens, adding that the 10th National Assembly would work with the Executive to fastrack the process.

Speaker Abbas also expressed his desire to see that his party, the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC), becomes the dominant party in the politics of Nassarawa State, just as he decried the perennial intraparty squabbles among members which he said has led to the party relinquishing many legislative seats, both at the state and national levels, to opposition parties.

Earlier, the Emir of Agwatashi Dr. Abubakar Apeshi told the Speaker that the visit was to congratulate the Speaker on his election to the Number 4 Citizen’s office and to express the emirate’s support and prayers for him to succeed in the discharge of his duties.

He said the emirate was thankful to the Speaker for his “magnanimity in appointing one of my illustrious sons, Alhaji Musa Hussaini, as the Special Assistant on Protocol.

“So, we have come on behalf of the community to thank you immensely for this good gesture that you have done to us in Oloso Community of Agwatashi Emirate.”

He prayed the Almighty Allah to grant the Speaker and his colleagues in the House the wisdom to make laws for the upliftment of Nigerians.

The emir was accompanied on the visit by a former senator, Salihu Hussain Egyegbola, who represented Nasarawa South Senatorial District in the 9th Senate.
