North’s governors ready to save Buhari’s shame

The governor of Plateau State, Simon Lalong, came the cheering news during the week that governors in the northern part of the country had declared open grazing an obsolete practice that must come to an end in the country. Instead, they said, Nigerian herdsmen must embrace ranching, which is the vogue all over the world. A communiqué issued by Lalong as the Chairman of Northern Nigeria Governors’ Forum after its virtual meeting on Tuesday stated that the current system of herding conducted mainly through open grazing is no longer sustainable in view of growing urbanization and the geometric rise in the nation’s population. The forum stated the need to sensitise Nigerian herdsmen in this regard and appealed to the Federal Government to support states with grants with which they can undertake pilot projects of modern livestock production.

In recent years, the nation has been goaded almost inexorably on the path of ethno-religious war as a result of clashes between herdsmen and farmers whose crops are often destroyed by the former’s cattle. The development has in recent times pushed the nation to the edge of the precipice with drumbeats of war getting louder and louder in different parts of the country. From Benue, Taraba and Kogi to Enugu, Edo, Delta, Oyo and Ogun states, bloody clashes are reported between herdsmen and farmers almost on a daily basis, farmers almost always at the receiving end as they find themselves perpetually at the mercy of AK-47 wielding herders who kill or maim them and rape their wives and daughters after destroying their farms.

In Benue State, for instance, residents of many communities in the state have become refugees in other lands, having been displaced by herders who invaded their communities and took over their lands. On a particular day in January 2018, the government had to conduct mass burial for 72 of its citizens after the violence provoked by the enforcement of a new anti-grazing law in the state. “They had threatened to wipe out the whole state if we did not repeal the law and allow their cattle to graze wherever they liked. The rule of law should be respected and punishment should be meted out to those who violate it,” a sobbing governor of the state, Samuel Ortom, told reporters afterwards.

Lately, world’s attention has been on the Ibarapa axis of Oyo State where herdsmen were said to have turned the killing and maiming of the inhabitants of the area as well as the rape of their wives and daughters into a past time. For decades, the hapless indigenes endured the reign of terror until a messiah arose in the person of Sunday Adeyemo, an indigene of the area, popularly called Sunday Igboho.

Worrying as the situation has been for well-meaning Nigerians, the shock of it all is the dead silence maintained by President Muhammadu Buhari on the matter. The President, who himself is a member of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, the umbrella body of herdsmen in the country, has not as much as called the leadership of the association to order, even in moments when they made inflammatory remarks to further inflame passion and rub salt into the wounds of the people at the receiving end of the wicked deeds of killer herders. Rather, the President is either admonishing the people whose loved ones are killed to learn to live in peace with the invaders or even defend the herders by holding the remnants of the army of former Libyan leader, Moammar Ghadaffi, responsible for the evil deeds.

Not surprisingly, Buhari’s loud silence on the sordid activities of herdsmen has given rise to all manner of postulations, including the one by the leader of the outlawed Independent People of Biafra (IPOB) that the man that steers the affairs of the country from the Aso Rock Presidential Villa is no longer the Buhari Nigerians voted for but a certain Jibrin from Sudan redesigned by some arcane devices to look like him. Others are of the opinion that Buhari’s decision to keep sealed lips on the matter was deliberate—a way of harassing the inhabitants of the different parts of the country that have caught the fancies of herdsmen to accept to host ruga in their domains as the only way out of the crisis that threatens to claim more lives than the civil war. It is all borne out by the Yoruba adage that says Bi nani nani ba n nani, ti eni to tonii gba ko ba so fun nani nani ki o ma nani mo, a je wipe oun lo ni ki nani nani  maa nani (when a strong man bullies a weaker one and the third man endowed with strength to stop the bully chooses to stand aloof, he is definitely an accomplice).

Mercifully, the voice of North’s governors combined is almost as strong as the voice of the President as far as the matter in question is concerned. An adage says if a man sights a snake and a woman kills it, what matters is that the snake dies. A python hitherto pampered by Mr. President is about to be eliminated by North’s governors. They deserve nothing but commendation

Lateef Jakande’s demise a monumental loss, says Gbajabiamila

    …commiserates with Lagos govt, Lagosians

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila, has described the demise of a former governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, as a monumental loss.

The Speaker said he was personally touched by the death of Jakande, whom he described as a man of peace, who lived all his life serving humanity.

He said Jakande, who passed away on Thursday at the age of 91, would be sorely missed by the people, especially Lagosians, and that he would be remembered for his developmental strides in the state.

He said Jakande’s invaluable contributions to making Lagos what it is today would never be erased, noting that the former Lagos governor was an embodiment of progress.

During Jakande’s active political participation, the Speaker said, he played politics without bitterness and ensured that Lagosians were carried along.

Gbajabiamila commiserated with the Jakande family, the people and Government of Lagos State over the loss.

“Lateef Jakande’s death is a personal loss to me, because he was a father to us all. A strong political ally to my mother, Alhaja Lateefat Gbajabiamila. We will never forget the role he played in the economic and political existence of Lagos State, especially when he served as governor between 1979 and 1983.

“Baba Jakande touched the lives of many people in different ways. His major preoccupation was the peace and unity of his people, and he lived by that example.

“As a politician, he was a nationalist, and as a foremost journalist, he was a patriot to a fault. When he later served as Minister of Works between 1993 and 1998, he did so diligently and with a lot of dedication.

“I pray that the Almighty Allah comforts his family at this difficult moment. May Jannatul Firdaus be his final abode,” Gbajabiamila said.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila, has flagged off the Federal Government’s Cash Grant to about 1,800 beneficiaries in Surulere 1 Federal Constituency of Lagos State.

The Speaker, who addressed the beneficiaries and other guests virtually at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos on Thursday, through zoom, assured his constituents of more socio-economic programmes coming to them.

“Each of you will be given N20, 000 to assist in your trading and whatever business you are doing and to cushion the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The Federal Government’s cash grant is a programme designed among other things, to reduce poverty across the country and cushion the impact of the Covid 19 pandemic.

“There will be many more programmes coming up in Surulere. Surulere remains number one and will continue to be number one, Insha Allah.

“So, we will continue to work hard for you from here in Abuja. If you look around everywhere in Surulere, there is one thing or the other going on in every ward. We will continue to do more.

“More importantly, I hope everyone has registered as a member of the All Progressives Congress? If you are not registered and your name is not in the register, you cannot say the party truly belongs to you”.

He however enjoined those who were not successful on the current batch of the cash grant not to despair, adding that all efforts would be made to ensure that they succeed next time.

  • What we’ll do differently in 2021 – Gbajabiamila

What we’ll do differently in 2021 – Gbajabiamila

    By Doris Igwe

…promises focus on more people-oriented legislation

…says ‘now it’s time to drop partisanship, politics’

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila, has said that the Green Chamber would focus its attention on bills and motions that would improve the ease of doing business and unlock economic potential.

Gbajabiamila, in an address to welcome his colleagues from the Christmas and New Year break during the resumption of plenary on Wednesday, said the House would make frantic efforts to surpass its achievements of last year.

He said though the Legislature does not have the control of the various security agencies, it would ensure the use of its appropriation powers to hold those responsible accountable as well as continue to collaborate with the Executive arm to improve the security situation in the country.

“In the 2021 legislative year, we will focus the attention of the House of Representatives on bills and motions that improve ease of doing business and unlock economic potential by stripping away restrictive regulation and ending predatory regulatory practices that deprive our young people the opportunity to conquer new frontiers.

“In this age of technology and innovation, of daring and enterprise, we cannot risk implementing policies that handicap our ability as a nation to participate in new markets and profit from emerging industries,” he said.

He added that “the true test of government is in our ability to protect the most vulnerable amongst us. We cannot separate the goal of economic prosperity from the ambition to ensure that all our people live in a just society free from abuse of power and protected by a justice system built on fairness and the rule of law.

“Therefore, we will shortly begin considering Bills to amend the Administration of Criminal Justice Act. We will follow up with a long-overdue review of the Trafficking In Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement And Administration Act and other legislation that seek to deliver a justice system that works for all.”

He said the constitution vests the responsibility of security and welfare of the people on all those that have sworn to serve in government, saying “Every time a citizen going about their business is killed or kidnapped, loses their property or livelihood, we have failed in our obligation.

“From the abundance of these failures has emerged a culture of self-help in matters of internal security that portends grave danger for our nation’s continued existence.”

Thus, Gbajabiamila called on Nigerians from all walks of life to put all the differences that exist among them aside and unite to face the challenges that confront the country.

“If ever there was a time for us to put aside all other considerations, especially the petty concerns of partisanship and politics, it is now.

“If ever there was a time to set aside our differences of tribe and religion to focus on a concerted effort to defeat the challenges of insurgency and banditry, communal violence, and the violent struggle over land, that time is now.

“The forces that threaten our lives and property, our sovereignty and nationhood, do not make any exceptions based on the God we pray to or the language of our native tongue.”

Noting that the House commenced the new year with a renewed commitment to legislative action that drives the course of progress and brings the House closer to achieving the highest aspirations it holds for the nation, Gbajabiamila said “we remain dedicated to the lofty, yet clear ambitions we articulated in our Legislative Agenda when we resumed in the 9th Assembly.”

He said despite the challenges the House faced last year, it was able to pass meaningful and potentially transformative legislation such as the Nigerian Police Act (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill, the Electric Power Sector Reform Act (Amendment) Bill, Physically-Challenged (Empowerment) Bill, Deep Offshore and Inland Basin Production Sharing Contracts Act (Amendment) Bill, and the Companies and Allied Matters Act, amongst many others.

In view of current realities, Gbajabiamila craved the indulgence of his colleagues to be careful with coming up with bills that seek to establish new institutions.

“At a time of reduced revenue, with preexisting and worsening infrastructure deficits requiring significant investments, we cannot afford to keep establishing more institutions that impose a permanent liability on government income. I am not unmindful of the realities that often necessitate such legislation, yet we cannot ignore the facts that lie before us.”

Sen. Al-makura, Revalidate party membership, says APC to be Africa’s Largest Political party

    Abel Leonard / Lafia

Senator Tanko Almakura who is representing Nasarawa South Senatorial District at the National Assembly,  has  revalidated his membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Senator revalidated his membership of the party at his Polling Unit in Gayam Ward, Lafia.

Speaking after the exercise, Sen. Al-Makura told party supporters that the exercise was designed to further strengthen the APC towards making it Africa’s largest political party

  • Akwa-Ibom senators withdraw petition challenging Buhari’s nomination of Yuguda as SEC DG

Akwa-Ibom senators withdraw petition challenging Buhari’s nomination of Yuguda as SEC DG

The three Senators representing Akwa-Ibom State have withdrawn a petition with which they challenged President Muhammadu Buhari’s nomination of Lamido Yuguda as the Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

The Senators are Bassey Akpan (Akwa-Ibom North-East), Christopher Ekpenyong (Akwa-Ibom North West) and Akon Eyakenyi (Akwa-Ibom South).

The lawmakers had challenged Yuguda’s nomination for the job on grounds that the President failed to nominate Mary Uduk from Akwa-Ibom State, who was already serving as Acting Director-General at the Commission.

According to a report of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, the lawmakers had sought the intervention of the Upper Chamber to ensure that the people of Akwa-Ibom State were not further marginalized in Federal appointments.

In his presentation, Chairman of the Committee, Senator Ayo Akinyelure, explained that the three Senators found it “disheartening that Mary Uduk who was eminently qualified to be appointed DG, SEC, having represented Nigeria at the regional and international bodies such as the West African Capital Market Integration Council (WACMIC) and currently on the board of the International Organization of the Securities Commission (IOSCO), the international standards setter for securities regulation, was neither listed as DH nor as a full-time Commissioner.”

He, however, said following a move by the Committee to investigate the concerns raised by the lawmakers in the petition to the Senate, the petitioners and respondents met and resolved the matter.

According to Akinyelure, the resolution between both parties subsequently led to the withdrawal of the petition by the three lawmakers from Akwa-Ibom State led by Senator Albert Bassey Akpan.

Sam Egwu (Ebonyi North), in his contribution, called on the Federal Government to consider Akwa-Ibom in future appointments in view of the withdrawal of the petition.

Adamu Bulkachuwa (Bauchi North), on his part, said the consideration of the report of the Ethics Committee was not necessary as the petitioners had withdrawn the petition.

The Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, however, observed that there was a procedural issue that made it mandatory for the Committee to submit a report to the Senate despite the decision by the petitioners to withdraw the petition in the first place.

Accordingly, the Senate while adopting a resolution by Senator James Manager (Delta South), resolved that “Consequent upon the withdrawal of the petition by the petitioner, the matter is hereby taken and withdrawal approved

  • Is Fani-Kayode Running Away From Justice?

Is Fani-Kayode Running Away From Justice?

    By E.S Eshiorameh

Who is squeezing Fani-Kayode’s balls? The last time the former aviation minister was in the news for the wrong reason was when he verbally assulted a Daily Trust journalist in Calabar, Cross River State, during his self-assigned vulturous adventure across some states in the country last year.

After ceaseless furious, vociferous and venomous attacks on the person and character of President Muhammadu Buhari, what could have changed FFK overnight? He is not a man of honour. Those who have worked closely with FFK know him as a man who has never been loyal to anyone but his pocket and stomach. His former principal, former President Obasanjo once described Fani-Kayode in few words: “Femi Fani-Kayode is my boy. Provide him food, he will eat and then sing for you. He is a smart boy”.

Indications are that Femi Fani-Kayode might be heading to jail as his money laundering case with the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) has been wrapped up.

All EFCC witnesses against him in his case in Abuja are reported to have given the commission the desired cooperation to nail FFK. He is also facing a heavier and different criminal prosecution in Lagos court.

EFCC is prosecuting Fani-Kayode on a five-count charge bordering on money laundering to the tune of N26million.

He is also standing trial before Justice Rilwan Aikawa of the Federal High Court Lagos, alongside Nenadi Usman, former minister of Finance, Yusuf Danjuma, former Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) and a company, Joint Trust Dimensions Ltd (belonging to Danjuma) are facing a 17-count charge of money laundering to the tune of N4.6billion.

Here lies the untold story about Fani-Kayode’s bridge building mission, new song of peace and freedom and his romance with the ruling party.

If what is alleged in the public about FFK looking for soft landing in an attempt to evade justice is anything to go by, then it therefore confirms the fact that the powerful will continue to use the instruments of the state to perfect injustice and parvade crime.

This will give credence to the crass disregard for people and institutions in the country in such a way that defines the character of the Nigerian society.

Already, DG of the Progressive Governors Forum Salihu Moh Lukman has kicked against the meeting by some members of his party with Fani-Kayode, saying that admitting him into APC is rewarding scandalous behaviour.

Lukman had averred thus:”for our leaders to associate themselves with Mr Fani-Kayode, is simply rewarding scandalous behaviour. Mr Fani-Kayode has fabricated stories, distorted, insulted and damaged information about our party and our leaders”.

The likes of FFK should not only be retired but flushed out of public space for people with the right shape of mind and acumen to lead the country out of its current state. Fani-Kayode is not only a distraction but also a baggage and burden to country.

Admitting a man who has no political value into the APC is not an issue as it is within his rights to associate or within the party’s discretion to accommodate him, but giving him a soft landing on financial crime will not only raise more questions about President Buhari’s anti corruption war that most Nigerians currently frawn at.

The trial of Fani-Kayode has cost the country so much in the last decades and the current administration can not afford to make muckery of an institution like EFCC, that has put all its resources together to block all intended avenue Chief Femi Fani-Kayode has exploited to evade justice. For once again, the EFCC deserves to add to its archives a high profile case and this would be to President Buhari’s credit.

Fani-Kayode was recently seen posed for a photograph that went viral on the social media with Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State, when he visited the Lugard House. Days after, he was also seen posed for photograph with Governor Bello and the APC Interim National Chairman, Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State after a meeting with them in Abuja. This was the least expected of a man who has consistently demonized virtually everything about President Buhari’s APC.

The controversial meeting had stirred up wide criticisms, particularly among his army of followers in the South East, many of whom have come to see him as a strong voice for the secessionist group (IPOB) in the region. Also was APC faithful who did not waste time to call on the leadership of the party to shut its door against politicians like FFK who will add no value to it.

Fani-Kayode had after the meeting claimed to have paid Bello a visit to activate moves for bridge building that could put to an end the current ethno-political disquiet and distrust in the country. This is quite commendable. But contrary to his claims, it was and it is still widely speculated that he was on consultation tour to defect to the ruling APC.

While FFK has effortlessly tried to explain why he visited the national chairman of an opposition political party and a governor like him too, till now, his inability to clarify speculations about his intented cross-carpeting to the APC has further given credence to the rumour.

However, Governor Bello on Wednesday put to rest the speculation when he confirmed that FFK has decided to join the APC.

For any patriotic Nigerian, this ( ‘healing process’) was expected of Fani-Kayode and his ilks who have bequeated nothing to the country but ethnic bitterness through devisive manipulation on-and-off the social media space. It is the right thing at the right time, though coming from the wrong man. In what better ways Fani-Kayode would have serve the country than cleaning some of the mess he has caused with his own mouth?

It is good that this is coming at a time like this when the country has been placed on the edge by characters like FFK, who fed Igbo youths with toxic lies, incited secession and now left to continue with the bitterness he has implanted in them.

But how did a Fani-Kayode who is known to be a war monger turn a peace facilitator overnight?

When Fani-Kayode was valifying President Buhari in some of his writings and many outbursts, many of us who know him somewhat as a recalcitrant and a fare weather fellow were not moved. We knew he would not last long in the imaginary world he was hibernating. We knew all along that he is an unstable character, unstable as water, who stands for nothing and will do anything to stay afloat.

We also knew it was his usual character like a peacock undulating its feathers to make a hit and cast a spell on some peahens around. Of course, the charm worked for him and it drew a good number of social media army from the South East to his side.

We knew all along that it was a detour to reach out to a prospective benefactors, perhaps another set of victims of his warned-out hoax.

Who among his social media followers would have thought that months and just weeks ago after FFK vilified President Buhari, called him all sort of names, described him as one who had come to steal, kill, and even expand his religion and ethnic dominance in the country and also extended his incendiary statement to Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and even threatened war after joining a section of the media provide the platform for Igboho with the oxygen to propagate a sinister agenda that almost set the South West against the North recently, would turned around to seek comfort in a home he had once called caliphate of vampires?

Fani-Kayode, like others, must not be let off the hook.
