The Chinese government has restated its commitment to working closely with Nigeria in tackling terrorism and enhancing national security.
This assurance came from Yu Dunhai, the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, following a meeting with National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu in Abuja on Thursday.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Ambassador Yu described the relationship between China and Nigeria as a comprehensive strategic partnership that continues to deliver concrete results in trade, infrastructure, and social development.
He noted that since President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s participation in the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China–Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) and his state visit to China last year, cooperation between the two nations has deepened across several key sectors, driving growth and improving livelihoods.
Yu reiterated China’s respect for Nigeria’s sovereignty and its development priorities, emphasizing that Beijing firmly rejects any form of external interference in the internal affairs of sovereign nations.
“China supports the Nigerian government in pursuing a development path suited to its national realities and firmly opposes interference under the guise of religion or human rights, as well as the use or threat of sanctions and force,” he said.
He added that China remains ready to assist Nigeria in strengthening its security framework, countering terrorism, and maintaining domestic stability.
“China is committed to supporting Nigeria in its efforts to combat terrorism and preserve peace,” Yu added.
His remarks came shortly after Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning issued a similar statement in Beijing, criticizing external threats of military action against Nigeria.
Mao reaffirmed China’s stance against any country using human rights or religion as justification for intervention, underscoring Beijing’s consistent support for Nigeria’s sovereignty and self-determined path to development.
