Consensus Triumphs: Nasarawa APC Unites Ahead of Crucial Local Government Elections

By Leo Zwànke, Lafia

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Nasarawa State has embraced a consensus strategy for selecting candidates for the upcoming local government elections scheduled for November 2, 2024. This decision was made during a stakeholders’ meeting convened by Governor Abdullahi Sule at the Government House in Lafia.

Addressing the meeting, Governor Sule emphasized that this consensus approach would foster unity within the party and improve its chances in the elections. He reaffirmed his commitment to the continued development of Nasarawa State and his intention to hand over the reins of power to a fellow APC member.

“The efforts of APC stakeholders in ensuring the party’s success cannot be overstated. We are focused on selecting candidates who demonstrate prudence, competence, and foresight,” Governor Sule said, urging aspirants to prioritize internal democracy and unity.

Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Danladi Jatau, stressed the significance of the upcoming elections, encouraging party members to work together for the greater good of the APC, both in the immediate contest and beyond.

Senator Abdullahi Adamu, the former National Chairman of the APC, praised the consensus process, stating that it reflects the collective will of the party to secure future victories. He urged ward leaders to ensure that only credible candidates are selected.

Former Nasarawa State Governor, Senator Umaru Tanko Almakura, added that the consensus approach, alongside the brainstorming sessions, would enhance the party’s readiness for the elections, ensuring the selection of candidates with credibility and integrity.

APC State Chairman, Dr. Aliyu Bello, lauded Governor Sule’s dedication to strengthening the party, noting the return of previously estranged members and new defections from other parties as proof of the APC’s growing unity.

During the interactive session, key figures, including Minister of State for Police Affairs, Imaan Suleiman Ibrahim, and National Legal Adviser of the APC, Professor Abdulkarim Kana, emphasized the importance of loyalty to the party and respecting the consensus decisions.

The meeting also addressed financial obligations for aspirants, with female candidates and persons with disabilities receiving a 50% discount on nomination fees. Aspirants were urged to finalize their nominations promptly.

Notable attendees included former Speakers of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Sen. Solomon Ewuga, and Barr. Halilu Envulanza. The APC’s consensus decision is expected to strengthen the party as it prepares for the elections, reinforcing its political dominance in Nasarawa State.
