Court declines to halt impeachment proceedings against Edo Deputy Governor amidst rift with Governor Obaseki.

Impeachment proceedings against Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, continue as the Federal High Court in Abuja declines to halt the process. Despite Shaibu’s request for a status quo order, the court rules that the Governor and House of Assembly haven’t been properly served. Consequently, the court allows serving the papers on Governor Obaseki and the Assembly by alternative means, directing them to be posted at government and Assembly gates. Further proceedings are adjourned till April 15. The impeachment stems from allegations of leaking government secrets, prompting Shaibu to file a suit seeking to restrain the proceedings. However, this marks the second time the court refuses Shaibu’s request for temporary relief. The rift between Shaibu and Governor Obaseki, possibly triggered by Shaibu’s gubernatorial aspirations, appears to fuel the ongoing saga.
