COVID-19: A’Ibom bans public gathering for state creation anniversary

By Samuel Ogenyi, Uyo

Akwa Ibom government has banned  public celebrations  and gatherings to commemorate the 33rd anniversary of the creation of the state.

This according to a release endorsed by the Secretary to the State Government, SSG, Dr Emmanuel Ekuwem in Uyo yesterday was incontinuation of the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This directive is in response to the difficulty that can be experienced in enforcing  compliance with  AKSG/NCDC/WHO COVID-19 guidelines and protocols  during big  state-wide  celebrations.

“This decision is taken in the interest of public health and safety of the citizens of Akwa Ibom state. The health,  lives and wellbeing of Akwa Ibomites must be prioritised over any celebrations.”

The statement however encouraged citizens and residents to use the occasion to reflect on the historical struggle for the creation of the state and apply themselves to worthy causes that would continue to positively  transform  and uplift the name of the state.

It would be recalled that Akwa Ibom alongside Katsina state was created on the 23rd of September 1987 by the then Head of State Gen. Ibrahim Babangida(Rtd.)

The state which has been governed by four civilian governors and many military administrators since its creation 33 years ago is formerly part of the old Cross River state.
