President Vows to Preserve Democracy, Addresses Economic Hardship
President Bola Tinubu praised Chief Moshood Abiola, the winner of the annulled June 12, 1993, presidential election, and other democracy heroes, including General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua and Pa Alfred Rewane, during his Democracy Day address on Wednesday.
Tinubu also honored Chief Anthony Enahoro, Chief Abraham Adesanya, Commodore Dan Suleiman, Chief Arthur Nwankwo, Chief Chukwuemeka Ezeife, Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu, Chief Frank Kokori, Chief Bola Ige, and other notable Nigerians for their sacrifices in restoring democracy.
The President cautioned Nigerians to be wary of elements attempting to undermine the current democratic system. Acknowledging the country’s economic challenges, Tinubu committed to supporting the citizens.
“On this day, 31 years ago, we embarked on our journey towards a true democratic society,” Tinubu said. “We lost great heroes like Chief MKO Abiola, his wife Kudirat, General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, and Pa Alfred Rewane, who sacrificed their lives for our nation’s future.”
Tinubu emphasized remembering sacrifices made by figures such as General Alani Akinrinade, Prof Bolaji Akinyemi, Prof Wole Soyinka, Chief Ralph Obioha, and Chief Cornelius Adebayo, who endured exile’s hardships for six years.
He recalled the efforts of pro-democracy activists, including Olisa Agbakoba, Femi Falana, Abdul Oroh, Senator Shehu Sani, Governor Uba Sani, and others who pressured military leaders while their comrades were in exile. Tinubu highlighted their irreplaceable contributions and assured their sacrifices would not be forgotten.
**Media Recognition**
Tinubu acknowledged the media’s crucial role in challenging military rule, praising establishments like The PUNCH, The Guardian, National Concord, Tribune, The News/Tempo, and TELL Magazines, which faced proscription and imprisonment for upholding free speech.
“The battle against military dictatorship could not have been won without the irrepressible Nigerian journalists who joined pro-democracy activists,” he said. “Their efforts toppled the dictatorship’s walls.”
**Commitment to Democratic Principles**
Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to transparent and fair elections, noting that true democracy enhances daily life by offering freedom and liberty. He stressed the importance of diverse perspectives in a democratic society.
“Nigeria faced a grave decision 25 years ago: to pursue a better future or continue in dictatorship’s fog. We chose the right path then and must continue now,” Tinubu said.
As a former National Democratic Coalition member, Tinubu reiterated democracy’s importance, warning against those exploiting economic challenges to undermine the system.
**Dedication to Democracy and Economic Reforms**
Tinubu encouraged Nigerians to commit to achieving economic democracy, essential for the nation’s progress. He acknowledged the economic difficulties but justified the necessity of recent reforms aimed at long-term growth.
“Our economy needed reform for decades due to its flawed foundation on oil revenues. The necessary repairs have caused hardship but are crucial for future prosperity,” Tinubu explained.
The President promised to submit an executive bill to the National Assembly to codify agreements from ongoing minimum wage negotiations, ensuring the terms become law for the next five years or less.
“Despite calls for a national strike, we chose cooperation over conflict, inviting labor leaders to negotiate in good faith,” Tinubu said. “Reasoned discussion and principled compromise are democracy’s hallmarks and will continue to guide my policies.”
Tinubu assured impartial dedication to strengthening Nigeria’s democracy, pledging to ensure a nation free from oppression.
